This car has an story behind it...
When Ratan Tata(owner) was going on a business meeting in his car on a day having heavy rainfall, he saw on one scooter, 4 people struggling against the rains and pot holes, father was driving with a 4 or 5 year old standing between him and handle and mother was carrying a toddler in her arms who was probably ill....this moved his heart and then he thought to make a car for people who can't afford a car(there are plenty in India and probably other countries too) hence nano came into production.....it is not made to compete with anyone...it is made to keep your family dry in rain and in shade during hot noon..that's it.

Tata was actually developing a second-generation car when they pulled the plug on the original Nano. There were prototypes running about and everything. It looked a lot like the previous car, but it was supposed to be improved in every way. There would be a proper crash structure with airbags, fuel-injection, a performance option, an electric option... the works basically. They cancelled it partly because of the OG Nano's slow sales and partly because the price of the new car would have made it a competitor to Tata's next car up, the Tiago. Similarly, the performance version would have gone up against the performance variant of the Tiago ( the Tiago JTP).
There were still rumours that the Electric variant would be manufactured for fleets, and a pilot program WAS conducted, but Tata went ahead and launched an electric variant of the Tiago sedan (the Tigor) Instead

I loved our little mohito green 2012 Nano LX. It was a brilliant car if you can get past the fact it was a death trap. It was about 2017 when they released the crash test results and it, like most Indian entry-level cars, failed. We took that car on some pretty decent road trips in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. IT was a beast on the road up to Ooti, a hill-station, though I did stress out the clutch. It had great interior room, I'm 6'3" and could sit in the back with the front seat all the way back. For three of us it was a great car to get around Bangalore and the few trips we took it on. Topped out at 100km/h (60ish mph) with a tailwind. I didn't have power steering which was OK except when I had a carpal tunnel issue when I wished I had waited for the 'twisty' model with power steering. Repairs were mostly covered under warranty but after-warranty repairs were cheap. I think it was about $20 for the clutch. As a city-car it was great. Once the crash tests were official, we didn't take it on the highway much. It was a conversation piece as it was the cheapest car available, and that I was the big (perceived) rich white guy who owned it. Sold it to an Indian colleague who wanted something to drive when it rained instead of his Enfield. This is still one of my favourite cars.

This car is much better than my 1972 Honda 600 coupe. Its claimed weight was 1312 pounds and my best unassisted speed was 70 at 6,000 RPMs. It had terrible torque steer on a slippery surface, got 40 mph (impressive in the early 80s) and was great fun to drive. Most died at about 35K miles, mine made it to 86K before the crank started knocking. We have had some wonderfully quirky cars to choose from over the years.
Keep showing us these weird and wonderful vehicles. Thanks!
