Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, by George Frederick Handel. (1738) This recording was performed by Nicanor Zabeleta in 1967, and in my opinion is the finest rendition of one of Handel's greatest masterpieces.
I've been searching for this for years, since my first wife left, taking the old cassette tape that this was on with her. I listened to this piece for over twenty years with her. Bless hear heart, we're still friends, but she lost the tape.Thank you so very much for posting this. It really made my Thanksgiving-eve evening!
My parents had this recoding, along with some Mozart harp pieces, on vinyl. We used to listen to it on long car trips (on cassette, of course). I've been trying to find this particular performance for ages, as none of the others I have heard have ever matched its beauty. Thanks!
Thank you so much, not only for this splendid recording, but for the lovely works of art which accompany the concerto - a feast for the eyes as well as for the ears!
I first came across Zabaleta through Alan Keith’s Sunday night BBC programme in the early 60’s of Eichner’s playing of this lovely harp concerto.I totally agree, his rendition of the Handel harp concerto is superb. Thank you for publishing it.
Perhaps the cleanest, brightest and best performance of this piece. It is in modern (rather than Baroque) tuning, which suits this piece best. I believe Handel originally wrote this as an organ concerto, but on harp it has a much more angelic quality. However, I believe there is a 2nd/middle movement which is missing from this.
This originates from a series of organ Haendel organ concerts. This particular organ series establishes more than firmly what a great keyboard improviser Haendel must have been.
This Concerto was written for harp and was performed during the premiere of the oratorio "Alexander's feast". In its original premiere it said: "Concerto in B flat major in three movements for harp, lute, lyric and other instruments." Later it was grouped with the other concertos op 4, which are for Organ and Orchestra.
Thanks, Pergolesi that was a great piece of handel, can you please Pergolesi name the pictures on the slides who are they? its good to know these aristocrats, Thanks Pergolesi
IMSLP is a fantastic resource for finding scores. Organ Concerto in B-flat major, HWV 294 (Handel, George Frideric) imslp.org/wiki/Organ_Concerto_in_B-flat_major%2C_HWV_294_(Handel%2C_George_Frideric) I know it says Organ but this is it, trust me. Apparently this concerto was originally written for solo Harp and orchestra but was rearranged for organ which is how it is known today.
Actually, thats a common misconception. This piece is the only one Handel ever wrote for harp. You are right Handel was a great keyboard improviser and he wrote a lot for organ, but this one was written for harp.
This Concerto was not the only thing that Händel wrote for Harp. He also wrote sections and solos with Harp soloist in works such as Saul or Giulio Cesare, among others.
This is not the whole concerto. The larghetto is missing. You can listen to the whole concerto with Zabaleta here th-cam.com/video/7D7K4TJOxfQ/w-d-xo.html
I am aware that it is not the full concerto. However, at the the time of uploading, over ten years ago TH-cam had a restriction on video length. Please accept my sincere apologies.

Harp is considered a Heavenly instrument and Handel provers it to be.
Really a great piece and magnificent images ! Thanks for this rare pearl.
I love Handel!!
Yes. This the best harp music ever I have heard
This is indeed the finest rendition of this composition. Rich bass, pure sound from the violins, crystal clear harp playing.
My parents had this recoding, along with some Mozart harp pieces, on vinyl. We used to listen to it on long car trips (on cassette, of course). I've been trying to find this particular performance for ages, as none of the others I have heard have ever matched its beauty. Thanks!

Thank you so much, I am pleased that you enjoyed it. The fact that you are from Italy means a lot to me. Italy is the birth place of the Renaissance.
The brilliant and delicate sound of the harp is wonderful
Serene, celestial, joyful; like so many of Handel's works! ❤
Infinite grace! Divine work! Thank you for posting!
Breathtaking! I have been hunting for this piece for literally years!! Bless you for the posting of it!
Handel's music was divinely inspired! Naturally, his harp concerto is heavenly!

That is a particularly lovely rendition. Thank you for uploading it. The paintings are fantastic as well, and lend just the right atmosphere.
It's the essence of the 18th century. Just so elegant and very original for the time too..

Nice, peaceful, cheerful and dynamic interpretation
Grazie. A list of all the well-chosen paintings would be a godsend. I do realize, though, that it would be a lot of work.

Both sound and color have been by far the best in the world.

Very very good, indeed. But, in my opinion, the best one is by Marisa Robles on Decca. But at this level, the difference is very small.
What is the painting at 7:25?
Isn't this the recording played at those old Anatomy video atlases?
Who was the painter of the Paintings ?
Please can you identify for us who are these people in the painting or each name of the painting many thanks to you
I made this video over 10 years ago, so I am sorry I can not remember.
