- Probably the blackest page of Circuit Zandvoort... Murphy's Law; everything went wrong at the same time. It's very easy to point fingers, but please don't forget the racecars these days were extremely dangerous aswell and in no way on the safety-levels compared to the speeds they were doing.
But even in 2014 the message is still clear: motorsport is dangerous (and always will be)...
the way he walks away.. it really hits you..
Coz some people will never get u...lolz
He stated later that he could hear Purley screaming the whole time
@davehoyer Williamson, not Purley
"Goood friends are hard to find". Roger Williamson had an amazing friend in David Purley.
What's horrible is that david Purley was the only one who actually tried to save him, the track marshals just stood there and the drivers thought it was Purley car that was overturned so they kept going
track marshals did nothing because their uniform was not fireproof
Felipe Simbron the drivers uniform wasn’t fireproof as well
@@bottledit5379 Yes it was. It became mandatory for drivers to wear fire-resistant driving suits in 1959 after the death of Jerry Unser Jr.
After this accident, it became mandatory for ALL trackside marshals to wear fire-resistant clothing.
@@StonedLittleFox In fact, even if they were, the technology wasn't so advanced to be truly useful in an accident of this degree
@@z28.310 they could have at least attempted to help. They did nothing at all. Cowards, each of them.
RIP Williamson. What a legend Purdey was. A shining star in the darkest time of F1.
Absolutely horrific. The poor driver may his soul be at peace. And David Purley is, and shall always be an unbelievably brave and heroically compassionate man.
An incredible man.
Incredible footage....a man watching his friend die in flames..my God....so helpless. Why no red flag?
Didn't exist at the time.
@@racingmhf9157I think it did exist because half points were awarded in some GPs from around that time, but it would only be used if the track was literally blocked to the point where cars couldn't pass an obstacle.
@@matthewthomas2546 Oh, I didn't know that. They really should have red flagged this race, or any of the races when a driver was killed.....
Thats how we see that safety have improved a lot and that now an accident like that shouldn't be fatal. All drivers who had died or suffered accidents in the past are the angels of nowadays safety regulations.
RIP all those who died 🙏
Then you have Grosjeans accident just a couple of years ago. He may well have burned to death had there not been JUST enough space under the barrier to climb out (even he doesn't recall exactly how he escaped)...and with all the safety now, he was still seriously burned and hospitalised for a week. If people are dying on the roads, with all the safety in OUR cars (mine has 12 airbags! 12! Not including the curtains that drop down to stop you going out the window) then you can bet we will NEVER see the end of tragedy in Formula 1.n(or any motorsports).
@@avrolancaster6987I'd say slot car racing is pretty safe. So not "any motorsports".
if i ever grow up to be someone special, i hope it could be a fraction of the man David was on this day
The sad Irony is that this incident led to in car extinguishers which can be activated. Which worked in 1977 when Renzo Zorzi's Shadow caught fire at The South African Grand Prix. Fire was out but 2 Marshalls ran across the track anyway, with fatal results.
One of the most needless deaths in F1. Everything that went wrong was preventable, it just wasn’t done. RIP Roger 😢
It says so much about the character of David Purley.
Just saw this on the quick and the dead doc on Prime. Didn’t know the backstory and had to pause it to go searching since there’s no context about it in the doc. Absolutely broke my heart seeing everything happening in real time. How hot it was, knowing he couldn’t lift something so heavy. The lack of safety precautions. Just heart wrenching.
I was only 12yrs old at the time of watching this, it's something I've never forgotten. To this day it makes me teary, to see his futile attempts and his utter despair.
Bro, everyone was just standing there doing nothing...brave guy for trying to save the other driver.
When I become nostalgic about "The golden years of F1" this piece of footage comes to my mind and I'm somehow glad that no one has to experience such a tragedy. This fight for the life of a friend is beyond heartbreaking
It’s so hard to think about the man who just sat in that car knowing he is going to die a horrible dead and burning alive and almost no one helped him
His George Medal awarded for his bravery was fully deserved. RIP David Purley, the bravest man in F1...ever.
If you look up the word "Hero" in the dictionary theres a picture of David Purley
I'm here After Grosjean accident. Wow the things has changed so much for well.
Just learnt about this. Very sad and tremendous courage shown by David Purley 🙏🏾
I normally dont cry but this just hit different
yeah bruh, for real
Ugh..., I can't imagine what Purley was feeling at that moment. He tried what he could....
Always sad to see this. But this video captures the whole thing really well. Thanks for sharing this @Drrrrkkk
Oh bless his golden heart. Poor man, how try to save him. :(
ANOTHER DJ ADDING SO CALLED SAD MUSIC TO PICTURES THAT DON'T NEED MUSIC.
It is SO DUMB. I stopped the video as soon as the stupid music started. You're correct, njclondon. The tragedy is unfolding in the video as we watch, and we have soundtracks of terror in our MINDS; we're not so STUPID to need force-feeding of SAD in our ears.
You guys are so boring, if it bothers you then turn off the volume
stop being pathetic
Silence is the most appropriate music for this.
Oh my heart. I m too old to watch this.😢🙏
"Drrrrkkk", please keep ONLY the original sounds; if you lack them, silence is the best; any music is just an annoyance, and even sounds hypocritical if a nostalgic one, no matter how fine and well chosen.

Agreed 100%. The music and song is disrespectful and insulting, no matter what it is. Don't add a damn thing.
"Drrrrkkk", I forgot to say, no mater the music (which is BTW more sensible than most similar ones on the web), your video is excellent because factual, with as little as possible alterations like cuts, mounting, etc. Unaltered Facts and Truth, including their exact and full names, are the best tribute one can give to good men like Roger Williamson and David Purley - exactly as you did.
Thanks BTW "Chad Arndt" for your support

"Ricky Springfield" ~Thu 03 oct 19h GMT « _You know you can press mute_ »
I am afraid you totally missed the point.
First, how can you imagine someone ignoring he can mute? more, when posting this? and here?
Second, the main annoyance of the "music" is to prevent from hearing the real sounds; here in this poignant situation where a man is putting his own life in great danger and using his whole energy for a desperate attempt at saving another life, many people would probably, as I do, want to hear the sounds of the men, in the middle of the sounds of the engines in the ongoing race, shouting to each others to help... Muting would be just shutting the little life, emotion and empathy that remains under that "music"... It would just join the ones who prefer made-up "emotion" over the true and moving emotion that comes from facts and sobriety.

I was nine years old, when I watched this live on television. 50 years later I'm still amazed and appalled at the same time by the cowardness of the bystanding marshalls. But David Purley, what an amazing friend he was, but eventually to no avail. Even more tragic to learn about the reward for all his heroics, which was to find an early grave too via an airplane crash ten years later.
Im glad safety has improved massively its so sad seeing purley trying to save him while none of the other drivers did 😭
What took the fire departure so long to get there?? RIP Willamson 😔
I know right...clearly see they were so unprepared!!! Cost a man his life!
What happened was the F1 cars kept driving so they couldn’t get it he fire truck on the track
The were a few meters up ahead from the crash site, but were forbidden to drive to the accident in the oppisite direction. They had to almost drive the full length of the track.
Terrible safety and communications in F1 before the 80's... the drivers were risking their lives every time they got in the car. He likely would have lived if this had happened today. One fire extinguisher, and around 4 minutes before the fire engine arrived. Kudos to Purley and those two workers for trying to turn over the car.
I can remember watching this. I was 4, no wonder it stayed with me.
Rest easy... sorry for the horror they had to endure.
How is anyone ok with driving by this and continuing? 😕
The flames were only fanned by the speeding cars passing by. 🥺
They all thought the driver was out of the vehicle.
@@Porthos240 that’s horrible 🥺 to think he might have been saved had they been able to signal
@@mirandaroberts1831 yeah it really is :(. I mean, fast paced situation, ya see a racer out of the vehicle putting out fire, other persons around it...can't blame the logic the other racers were working off of, but tragic nonetheless. Darkest hour of F1.
@@Porthos240 They say they thought that, but there were two cars stopped there.
@@neilgerace355 true. I think generalisation is a bit tough either way :(
You really see the moment when he realised that there was no chance and he just started to face life without his mate
A man who was afraid of nothing and loved danger. He went to Dartington Hall School. I found myself sharing a bedroom with him for a couple of terms when we both went there in 1958. We were pals. I remember he was always into doing daredevil stunts.
What a miserable way to die.
Poor fella.
they could hear him screaming... until they couldn't........
that fire extinguisher did literally nothing.
Que triste y doloroso momento!!😔
Williamson must of been screeming in horror from the pain in the fire
Yes. Purley stated later on that he could hear Williamson's screams from under the car.
@@StonedLittleFox that’s horrible 😭
As soon as i saw the men in suits, i knew they would be not helping at all.
Polyester is highly flammable and they would not have been able to do much. I, myself, still would have tried something even if nothing could be done.
Some came running . . . others ran away.
This is absolutely ridiculous. Car upside down and in flames....drivers carry on racing, people running around on the track, 8 minute wait for any proper help. What were people thinking back then.
and they stopped making most engine parts out of Magnesium after this - that is why the fire was so brutal, it wasnt the fuel
When F1 was a blood sport.
What a bloody mess. Marshalls like deer caught in the headlights. Why wasn't the race red flagged?
you really have to be precise with a poxy fire extinguisher to have any sort of effect I guess. maybe he was a little frantic in the moment... could all the marshalls have placed dirt over the fire surrounding the cockpit to try to snuff it out?
David purely is a god among cowards. May Roger’s soul rest with speed
despite David Purley's desperate attempts to save Williamson at least she is seen as a true hero unlike officials
This video was uploaded not even a month before another tragic F1 accident
Marshals was pathetic back then
I honestly don't get the "why didn't X driver stop and help?" Stuff. In this case, the accident driver was one of his actual best friends....but even today, when do you see cars stop and drivers jump out to see if they can help? How many drivers jumped out to the aid of Grosjean when he was seconds from death not a couple of years ago?
No ...stopping in these conditions may well cause another accident. I don't know, but I reckon what passed as a safety briefing in those days would have contained the words 'see an accident, don't stop'.
In those days the show just went on anyway, no matter how many casualties there were...to stop chaos erupting on and around the track (was the way of thinking at the time).
This is a must sad moment in sports history... 😢😢
Useless coward marshals.
為什麼如此重大的F1賽事
滅火器才1支在噴灑
看了影片挺難過的
希望往後有更專業的救援設備和效率
亡者一路好走😭
love the song really appropriate.
That was a medieval death. RIP! Can't imagine the horror.
Jesus Christ they took long enough to get a flag out / also WTF was with the other idiot drivers ploughing on as if nothing amiss?? Some heroic effort by David Purley to try to save his friend + colleague but that fire was a conflagration RIP 🙏
If you think 1994 San Marino Grand Prix was blackest day in gp history that’s nothing compared to this lack of safety and poorly trained marshal and firefighter arriving 8 minutes too late goes to show this era of f1 was deadliest period
Marshalls here are just useless. Totally useless.
R.i.p...Junaci ..Heroji...Ljudi...
Why is race still going on😞😞rip
The music ruins this, it’s not needed.
i fucking bawled my eyes out
Roger dufam ze si stastny. Tam niekde.... Je tam uz aj Niki co ti nepomohol a hladal len sebareal. Dufam ze mu odpustis.

Purley did his best...
I’m related to David, he’s my nanas cousin
so sad.
