He did it a couple of years later & made it through to the end. Unfortunately it put his life to an end.

I was nine years old, when I watched this live on television. 50 years later I'm still amazed and appalled at the same time by the cowardness of the bystanding marshalls. But David Purley, what an amazing friend he was, but eventually to no avail. Even more tragic to learn about the reward for all his heroics, which was to find an early grave too via an airplane crash ten years later.

When I become nostalgic about "The golden years of F1" this piece of footage comes to my mind and I'm somehow glad that no one has to experience such a tragedy. This fight for the life of a friend is beyond heartbreaking

A man who was afraid of nothing and loved danger. He went to Dartington Hall School. I found myself sharing a bedroom with him for a couple of terms when we both went there in 1958. We were pals. I remember he was always into doing daredevil stunts.

Some came running . . . others ran away.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Car upside down and in flames....drivers carry on racing, people running around on the track, 8 minute wait for any proper help. What were people thinking back then.

If you think 1994 San Marino Grand Prix was blackest day in gp history that’s nothing compared to this lack of safety and poorly trained marshal and firefighter arriving 8 minutes too late goes to show this era of f1 was deadliest period

The track workers didn't have fire resistant clothes then, they did after this

and they stopped making most engine parts out of Magnesium after this - that is why the fire was so brutal, it wasnt the fuel

You really see the moment when he realised that there was no chance and he just started to face life without his mate

I was only 12yrs old at the time of watching this, it's something I've never forgotten. To this day it makes me teary, to see his futile attempts and his utter despair.

Jesus Christ they took long enough to get a flag out / also WTF was with the other idiot drivers ploughing on as if nothing amiss?? Some heroic effort by David Purley to try to save his friend + colleague but that fire was a conflagration RIP 🙏

The sad Irony is that this incident led to in car extinguishers which can be activated. Which worked in 1977 when Renzo Zorzi's Shadow caught fire at The South African Grand Prix. Fire was out but 2 Marshalls ran across the track anyway, with fatal results.

I became a PN´s fan because in Brazil we have a film called SABADO ALUCINANTE (alucinanting saturday) was our "brazilian saturday night fever" and "on the strip" played many times in a celebrations and discos everywhere. I hope sing someday "dancing with captain" in a cruise.

"Goood friends are hard to find". Roger Williamson had an amazing friend in David Purley.

Seen two of these stunts on YT before his fatal one, failing to fully break through in either. I suspect that's why he increased the approach speed significantly during his last attempt 1988, that and the ramp, which was constructed differently and was too steep, made his car jump up. And if the 2nd bus hadn't been so low, it might have survived, and he would have kept his head.

It says so much about the character of David Purley.
