WHAT IS ARCHAEOLOGY?! UCLA Anthropology Student Explains | Anthropology & Archaeology | Classes

  • In this video, I explain the definition of archaeology, what the classes and careers look like, and my experience with archaeology as a student so far. Once upon a time I thought archaeology would be just like the Indiana Jones movies: action packed, full of gold, and maybe even a snake our two. As it turns out, archaeology is a slow and technical field and many people are surprised by this. Additionally, it falls under the anthropology umbrella as a subfield. I hope you enjoy what I have to say and can find some of the answers you are looking for!
Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am currently an undergraduate Anthropology student at UCLA on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. This is my journey to expanding my global and anthropological knowledge. This is my journey to finding the best career I can. This is my journey to finding happiness. This is my journey to success.

I'm 17 and I'm so excited to study anthropology after high school. ever since I was a child I have always been intrigued by human history, how people behave the way they do, what makes us unique, different cultures, and how they interact with different kinds of people. I don't care if it pays much or if I will ever get a job correlated to this field but I have made up my mind to do so. Any advice?

Hello Moyeen! One of my favorite things is hearing from high school students looking to study anthropology (I had no idea what I wanted to study back then lol). You embodied what anthropology is so well in your comment. I think definitely take as many anthro classes as you can in college and try to get some experience out in the field. This could be in a museum, in a lab, on a field site, etc. Experiences like these really help you to get a grasp on what exactly you want to do. Best of luck and thank you for your comment!

I'm studying anthropology right now as one of my high school courses. I had no idea about what it is until I watched your videos. Thank you for making such a good explanation of everything. You are really helping me out!!!

Aw I am so happy to hear this! I love hearing about high schoolers learning about anthropology (I did not have that opportunity). Let me know if there's anything you want to see!

This is such a great video!! I like both archeology and computer science and was wondering if their are any subfields that combine computation with archeology ?

These are such amazing interests! And surprisingly, I do know of one thing that actually may appeal to you! Something important in archaeology sites is mapping the site itself and having good documentation of everything going on throughout the dig. Something gaining traction now in the archaeological space is "drone-mapping" the site. Drones are used to create a detailed topographical image of the site. I'll link a website I found with more info but it definitely combines your interests to some extent! blog.statemuseum.nd.gov/blog/drone-mapping-archaeological-site

Hey great video! I am a sophomore in highschool and have always been a history lover, I love to learn about where we come from and why people behave the way they do. I am interested in pursuing anthropology or archaeology when I graduate from highschool. I am planning on getting my BA in archeology. With this would I be able to travel the world and participate on field jobs (of course with some experience in the field), while the same time get paid? Is this an unrealistic expectation? (sorry for late comment)

Hi! It is so awesome to see students thinking about this and starting to early. I can honestly say that in high school, I had no idea what I was doing haha. If you did pursue a BA in archaeology, it is definitely realistic to travel the world to do field research but as an undergrad, way less likely to get paid to do that. Sometimes you can apply for funding to do your research (this is what I did) but these opportunities can be hard to come by. After undergrad, if you do your PhD, there are way more opportunities to get paid to do this. You got this!

Many of the most famous archaeological discoveries were purely serendipity and funded by rich, white men, such as Lord Carnarvon and Heinrich Schliemann, or a French soldier who stumbled upon the Rosetta Stone under Napoleon's campaign in Egypt
