I wish you were my professor. Thanks for giving me the understanding of what is a cultural anthropology. I had hard time deciding which anthropology class I wanted to take for my next semester in college. Now, I know I want to take cultural anthropology. My goal is to get a degree in geography.
I was planning to enroll between SOC or ANTH for the summer, and I came across your video to search what is anthropology about. This short video made me quite intrigued to learn more!
I've already applied and accepted to do my university degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, but today I really stopped and thought to myself; if I couldn't teach English to travel, what would I be interested in? That's when I found out about Cultural anthropology, and I feel like I'm being seduced over to the dark side haha This video was amazing, thank you for making it!
I started my 5 week cultural anthropology class today online bc of coven and I have to teach myself and this video gave me so much clarity on what I was reading about in my class. thank you so much!! this really helped
I'm going for my starting year majoring in Anthropology, and I'm trying to watch videos and not be intimidated haha I am also 40 years old. So I'm hoping that doesn't matter for my Interest in the field.
The work of Sahlins, Douglas, Mintz and the like skew the idea all cultural anthropologist are interested in living people doesn't it? My favorite definition was always " the study of anything that currently had, once had, or could have anything to do with humanity." Through methodologies Anthropologists can study just about anything.
I'm not going to give all those loser cultural anthropologists access to my precious archaeological resources! In other news, I saw Sidney Mintz give a talk when he was in his 90's. He looked like a doddering old man and I thought it was going to be a train wreck, but he was still super sharp and his talk kicked ass.
can anyone tell me what's the difference and similarities of the concept of anthropologist and sociologist in CULTURE and in SOCIETY pls. i would really appreciate it.
The funny answer is that they are not really all that different. I would say that anthropology is more broad as a discipline, and more global in its reach. A sociologist tends to focus on the culture that they live in. These are broad generalizations though, and of course anthropology is much cooler.
Why not. Levi-Strauss more, but this is all old-school theory jazz that gets really overblown really quick. I can have that conversation, but then everyone would hate me, including myself.
Thank you sir I wished you would be given A plot about PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION WHEN you mentioned it 1:00. Again thank you so much.your videos are giving ME more obviousness of what anthropology looks like. It’s easy to catch and also your sense of Humor and karisma is pulling to attention. as a non-student who wants to pursue a degree in anthropology in USA you are helpful. Thank You :)
Thanks! Participant observation is just what it sounds like - hanging out with the culture you are studying to have a first-hand experience to aid in understanding.
I went to UC Santa Barbara (BA), then Cal State Northridge (MA), and finally UC Riverside (PhD). Lots of colleges will work for you, just don't spend too much! In high school, good grades are the best thing. Try to do well in English to get your writing skills up. You don't have to worry about anthropology classes until college. If you have an opportunity as a senior to take a college class in anthro, that might be worth it. Keep on going!
That is a very involved question. Here's a very short answer - Beyond working in academia, you can work for private companies (as an anthropologist - rare but it does exist!), government agencies, world health/culture groups (and similar). I also know people who used it as a stepping stone to law school. It is also a major that sounds cool, which matters. The American Association of Anthropology (AAA) has lists of job possibilities on their website if you are curious.
Anthropologists have the corner on the market of fieldwork more than the others. Sociologists just ain't the same. Plus, saying you are an "anthropology" major is about a thousand times cooler than saying you are a "sociology" major.
Tough one! In college, you would focus on cultural anthropology, then look for schools with profs that specialize in Australia. Rare, but they do exist.
Modern cultural anthropologists are more activists than scientists. very sad. very disappointed when i graduated with my anthropology degree. thankfully archaeology and biological anthropology are still very interesting.

Glad to help out! Anthropology works well in support of a geography major.

I’m so glad! I wish you well.
Finally someone that makes the explanation more common sense than the Google itself 🤓😷
That’s my job!
I’m 15 and I have interests in things hardly anyone my age does Mainly This (Cultural Anthropology and Linguistics).
Great! Anthropology is a fascinating subject.
Omg I'm 17 and I love linguistics and same, I don't know anyone else my age who's interested
@@jordanwebster9369 Most colleges have these classes at the lower division level (you can take these classes your first semester).
Jordan Webster that’s weird someone not too much older than I am who likes Linguistics and what’s even weirder is my Name is Jordan as well.😂
You are not unique
You are really a wonderful TEACHER.You have explained things in a fantastic way that even a lay man can understand it.Loved the way you teach
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.

Welcome to the Dark Side - there is always room for more!
Oh my another English teacher who is probably off to Japan☺
I’m a junior in high school and I’m very interested in anthropology and linguistics.
Cool. Most high schools don't have much anthropology, but most colleges do! Look for the classes at your local community college or university.
You're an awesome lecturer! I really like how you go out at the end of your videos.
Kaleb Wondwossen Thanks Kaleb! The “walk out” just started as an easy way to cut the scene, but I kept it and I like it too.
I started my 5 week cultural anthropology class today online bc of coven and I have to teach myself and this video gave me so much clarity on what I was reading about in my class. thank you so much!! this really helped
I'm glad it helped! Welcome to the club.
When I took Cultural Anthropology in college, it was my favorite class. Of course I ended up majoring in something more practical, philosophy. :)
Thanks this helped me a lot
I'm glad. Always feel free to ask any additional questions, and I can answer in video fashion.
Great video! Thanks for that.
Thanks man!

You’re going to be fine - I know people who began their journey into anthropology who were (gasp) way over 40!
Well i select this course for next sem GE, and now i know what it is actually
Cool!
Thank you king, but can you explain SOCIAL enthropology now? thanks
Social or Socio-cultural anthropology is basically the same thing as cultural anthropology.
The work of Sahlins, Douglas, Mintz and the like skew the idea all cultural anthropologist are interested in living people doesn't it? well understood thank you so much!
You're welcome!
So why would anyone want to cancel culture?
I can't believe you would make a silly joke out of a major key term in anthropology! That's my job.
Is Claude Levi-Strauss and Triste Tropiques still relevant?
Why not. Levi-Strauss more, but this is all old-school theory jazz that gets really overblown really quick. I can have that conversation, but then everyone would hate me, including myself.
Nice intro--from a cultural anthropologist!
Thank you sir

Thanks for the kind words - it makes it all worth it!
Based on the reading material, name, define, and explain the two contrasting modes of production.
Helping us me sir😢
What college did you go to? Also, what are some high school courses that you should take if you want to major in Anthropology?

What is the place of Molecular Athropology in Cultural Athropology?
I don’t even know what that is!! It would be under Biological Anthropology (I’m guessing it’s a specific focus on human DNA).
You are such a weird dude, but your video checks out. Thx man =D
Me going to England to a nandos to study mad lad culture

How is this any different from a sociologist or a social-psychologist doing ethnographic fieldwork? I guess I just missed the point there.
Anthropologists have the corner on the market of fieldwork more than the others. Sociologists just ain't the same. Plus, saying you are an "anthropology" major is about a thousand times cooler than saying you are a "sociology" major.
