I have the exact same issues going through tourist towns like Stowe...when I see crowds, traffic, and lineups, I get stressed, and nope outta there to somewhere quiet. We go for long rides to find peace and happiness, right? I love your positive attitude and your perpetual smile, great video as always, looking forward to the next one!
If the day has been warm and the overnight temps are going to be low I will camp. But if I've been cold all day I like to get a room. I always carry one backpackers freeze dried meal with me just in case there is no grocery store close. I am always amazed that you can get stopped and your rain gear on before it starts raining. Something I can seem to do.
I think the trick for rain gear is to watch the clouds and when they reach a certain color I stop and put it on 😂 sometimes it does rain on me sometimes it's just a sprinkle, but it's worked out pretty well so far.
Yes on the cold camping if equipped for it. Love your content. Great editing. You showing the roads you travel, costs, riding gear is helpful to fellow long-distance riders. I like your choice of background music too. Keep it up.
New England was the area of my first moto camping trip in 1996, my first night was spent on the lawn of a church on North Hero Island in Lake Champlain that the pastor was kind enough to let us use as we couldn't find a campground. I've ridden through New England many times since with my favorite area being the Adirondack Mountains, specifically around Lake Placid. Riding up Mt Washington is not for the faint of heart, I have seen more than a few motorcycles turn around before reaching the top. I wouldn't even try it if it was raining let alone any chance of freezing temps. Ride safe out there.
Maine is the best state in my eyes haha, glad to see it remains undefeated! Was really fun to get to see you roaming around my part of the country! Not to mention seeing you when you passed through CT; so glad I was able to provide a nice warm stay for the night haha, but I guess we'll see that next episode 🤫. Also it blew my mind that you don't have toll roads and service plazas over there ! As much as I hate driving the New Jersey Turnpike, it is kinda nice to have so many fancy service stations lining it so I can get Shake Shack lol. Also omg 50k! Yay Amanda!
👍 Looks like you had a blast. Vy is a pretty ride, as you have stated the East Coast is expensive with Stowe being right up there price wise. Lots of nice dirt gap roads for those that like class VI roads.
Thank you for this 💜 I grew up in CT until I moved to CA for college. I had only ridden on the back of my father’s motorcycle growing up so it’s a bucket list item to be able to ride through CT and New England as the main operator.
I did my first moto trip this year (thanks for inspiring me), also doing a loop through New England. I was also very disappointed with Twin Mountain; its not much more than a wide spot in the road. Maine was amazing, dispite that day including rain so bad it wetted out my gear and filled my boots, plus a bike drop that misaligned my handlebars. I certainly want to go back
September is a great time to explore New England, but the colors were not as vibrant, I was following the color chart predictor. ALSO the timing just didn't work for me in 2023 lol I went when I could 😊
Amanda, great great content. Your videos are beautifully documented and narrated. But keep in mind that MREs exist for those times when you don't feel like going through the trouble of cooking or can't find a place to eat, there you go, Meals Ready to Eat. And thank you for showing us our great nation through your travels. Love it. Keep it up and be extremely safe.
Wow. The colors are amazing in this video. Thanks for taking me along. BTW...the overwhelming tourist crowd in Jackson was a shock to me. I've learned to avoid that craziness whenever possible.
Glad you made it to upstate NY. You traveled down many of the same roads i get to ride every summer. Great views and twisty curves. Keep up the good content. My wife and I sit down together to watch them.
I have camped and would camp again below 40 degF. My worst experiences camping is when it's to hot. I camped at dinosaur national monument and it didn't drop below 90 until midnight; never want to do that again although watching the night sky was one of the best.
Amanda, thank you so much for sharing this part of your trip, I went to Stowe Vermont in the mid 1980s and it was nothing like you had shown it. I think I would’ve skipped it as well and as part of your end screen crew no I would’ve found a motel or hotel when you were travelling on highway one that is not very far from New Brunswick Canada, which is where I live, so nice to see you on the East Coast and we do have some beautiful sites. The colours and textures are just gorgeous. Thank you for this great video. Looking forward to your next one.
You are smiling -Yes! So important. I've Camped low temp 32 degrees (no water flow from spigot). Comfortable until exit tent w/o direct sunlight. Finger numbing. Great to see your travel videos as always. At tourist spots I do the Chevy Chase @ Grand Canyon Vacation movie scene. Touch and go!
I have camped at freezing in the mountains but most often will find a motel. Lovely to see you on roads and thru towns I know well. I was about 5 days behind you going thru on my way back to Newfoundland from my 3+ months on the road. Too bad you missed Smuggler's Notch but with all the "leaf peepers" out, that might have been a good call.
It's definitely situational. If it's been raining, I'm getting a hotel to dry out and warm up. Also, if I'm with my wife, I'm much more likely to get a hotel, because she is more sensitive to the cold. We had a camping trip in Southern California in February a few years ago where the camp host sold us damp wood that wouldn't light and we couldn't get warm after being chilled all day long. Now, even though we have sleeping bags that are rated for colder weather, we're more apprehensive about being out in the cold overnight. Likewise, if it's too hot, I'll get a hotel. I can't fall asleep if it's going to be 80+ at night. I'd love to check out Niagara Falls and New England in the fall, although the crowds and lines always give me a bit of anxiety. Thanks for another wonderful video to help us live through your experiences!
We were in Maine this fall. We also fell in love with the house and barns connected. I want to live in one too. We love watching you and can not wait for the next one. Never stop Magpie!
Great perspective on travels through the N.E. I'll probably never get there, so this episode is a good glimpse into the territory and the roads to ride.
I don't mind cold camping as long as it's dry. I camped at Luna Lake outside Apline, AZ with a low of 20F. My only issue was touching all the metal stuff as I packed up and letting my hands get cold. I bought heated gloves the next day.
I’ve been going up to Stowe for the past decade or so, it’s one of my favorite areas primarily for snowboarding. I did a moto trip from Jersey up to Stowe late last August, specifically because it was a few weeks prior to leaf peeping season where the traffic and the hotel rates quadruple. Smugglers notch and the roads north of that are worth revisiting during an off peak time.
Oh YAY... You got to ride the Kanc!! That was one of my favorites from my trip to New England a few years ago. There are some excellent campgrounds along it too but I'd imagine they were full when you came through. I went in early August so of course no fall colors but it was not too crowded... A trade off I was willing to make. LoL Yep, definitely camping in 44*. Great content as always, Amanda! Hope to see you out there doing the thing! 🙂
I’ve done a bivi bag camp under a tarp at 21f and two or three hammock camps at about the same temperature. All were single night camps and none of them were on my bike. The bivi bag camp was in a British army arctic sleeping bag and at one point during the night I had to open it up the cool down 😄 🏴
So wild seeing you somewhere I know!! Our friends live on VT100 - I know that waterfall, ha ha. As far as they've told us, it's pretty busy everywhere during leaf season, but check out Warren the next time you're there!
Yes, I have camped when it's 40 deg. Not my favorite though. Leaf peeping season in New England = peepers and cars everywhere. You made the best of it. Another great video. Thanks for taking us along.
I like to see that you're coming around the KOA's! :) While they're not the greatest in "camping", they're nice for a place to stop and not have to unpack everything. They're also good for a hot shower and laundry once in a while. Usually so much cheaper than any local hotels too.
Wow! You went right through my riding area in NY. The Rte 30 and Rte 8 area (Northville to Lake George). My wife and I did the Vermont Rte 100 ride a couple of years ago, it is a wonderful ride. We did eat at the apple orchard that you skipped. You didn't miss anything, long lines and high prices for average food. The warm cider donuts at the orchard were awesome though.
hello from a viewer in New England, Connecticut to be exact. I love Maine. There is a reason their slogan is "Maine the way life should be" Peace and continue to travel and share your adventure.
Great video with wonderful information. I’m from California my daughter‘s in Pennsylvania at Duquesne for nursing. I ride across the country and down the eastern seaboard to Forgotten Angels yearly and I love your videos and thanks for the tip for moto camp nerds. Just talked to Ben.😊
Good heavens all those layers! I have to laugh because, as a rider, I understand going to the bathroom in the winter can be... stressful 😅. You have more layers than most, though! Necessary, definitely. Another necessity is a cabin in cold weather. Once upon a time I might camp in the colder weather since the cold makes for some really good sleeping. But not on the ground. I'm way past ground sleeping. Give me a cot in a pinch, but a bed whenever available 🤣 Hope you continue to have favorable weather and great riding on the return trip home.
End screen question answer: Nope, not camping if I don't have to at 44 degrees. In my younger days I did it often but as I have gotten older my tolerance to cold and hot has reduced. It is a lot harder to get going when it's cold out and if the sleep quality is reduced it's not worth it. I even have a 0 degree sleeping back and stay fairly warm but it's not fun any more. One of the many fun things I like about your channel is you show me things I have missed. I've been to Maine but not to mile 0 which now I want to do. I also what to see those planets along the road. Stowe is on my "no thank you list". I'm not a fan of traffic and a lot of people. Anxiety attacks are real and not fun. I'm looking forward to the next episode of your travels.
I hope you had the chance to go through the town of Camden, ME . Hands down my most favorite place in the world! Beautiful little town. I try to visit every year with the plan to buy property there some day in the future
I would camp in 44F no problem. I sleep in my Big Agnes Diamond Park 15F on my side porch couch every night. It’s reached 15F before and I’ve been cozy in my shorts and tee shirt.
Amanda enjoyed the video. Love New England. Should have visited BREAD LOAF COLLEGE and Ye Old Round Church in Vermont and hwy 2 connecting the chain of islands in north Lake Champlain then there is Woodstock, Vt. and Lincoln, Vt. RIDE SAFE O😢UT THERE! And the CORNISH WINDSOR COVERED BRIDGE crossing the Connecticut River
You've apparently come to the place that I call home. I live in central NH, and those roads are all my typical escapes during rising season. You've been to Tampa, same as I. Sometimes the folks I meet around FA ask me why I don't move south, closer to them. I think now you might know why that will never happen.
I hope you made it to the beautiful 4 corners park in Madawaska near Ft Kent. It’s one of the 4 corners of the USA. Absolutely stunning park built for bikers!
I would definitely go for the hotel over camping in 5 degrees. You need to have a good nights sleep when you are riding as much as you are. Worth the extra $$ I believe. Have you ever thought about travelling Australia Amanda?
If I had known you were riding thru my neck of the woods you could have camped at the family farm for free. That's where the real saving are found. Lol I know a few really good rides around here too.
I'll have to search through your videos, but how do you plot out your route and then follow it on GPS? I have such a hard time doing that, like loading a premade route. Maybe I need to do more research, hah! I love how you mix it up with hotels and camping - because there are those times when you need to be dry and warm. ☺
KOA Camping Cabins don't come with heat or AC, you can request a heater when booking but it doesn't mean they have to do that. The Lake George KOA was the only one that didn't give me a heater of all my KOA stays, and it was because they were shutting down for the season the next day after I rolled through. 🤷 Still cheaper than the $248 the nearest hotel wanted.
Smuggler’s Notch is an interesting ride but there is usually traffic going through the notch. Bicyclists slow the traffic down and the switchbacks are very steep. It would have been a challenge going through there on a fully packed bike. I had difficulty when I went through there on my Road King in August of that year. The Kanc is definitely the jewel of roads in New Hampshire. Thank you so much for this video. After moving to CA in November this brought me back home.
I avoid Most of VT during leaf season. It’s insanely crowded and many miles long traffic jams are common. Not fun. You’re much better off staying in NY state, imo.
Ahh yes, fall in the north-east is different than the travel guides will tell you. The sun gets a little further away and weaker every day, and the humidity mixes with the cold that chases the sun out, and makes what already seems like cool temperatures feel downright cold. At higher elevations, snow isn't uncommon from the middle of October right thru May. Yes, the colors are pretty, but the effect is somewhat muted under gray skies that are just itching to snow on you, or at least blanket you in a chilly fog. It's not for the weak and un-prepared, but every once in a while the sun will burn thru and wash the hills in beauty that will take your breath away. Both those days are wonderful every year.😉
Hello from Western NY, did you do Maid of the Mist at the Falls? (Hint, it's rain on the boat!) I'm a sport tour rider from between Buffalo & Rochester. Question, Adv helmet, how well does it help for keeping sun out of your face? Does it catch wind? Thank you for Videos, Daryl
Niagara Falls was really the only spot in today's video where I couldn't see my bike. I always park my bike in front of windows at restaurants so I can see them. At Niagara Falls when I realized how far away the falls was from the parking lot the lot attendant lady very kindly promised to keep an eye my bike for me. I still always take my tank bag because it has all my cameras. Thus far I've only had two things stolen off my bike in the last ten+ years of riding. A tripod that was easy to snag out of a bungee net in Yellowstone National Park, and another small item that was out in the open and easy to grab. MOST theft can be deterred by packing well so nothing is visible, and making sure it would take longer than 2-4 minutes for someone who doesn't know anything about your bike to get it out or off. I always take the stuff with me that would be earth shattering if it was stolen/the one bag that's zippered and would be easy to get in and out of. Most theft when you're traveling is crime of opportunity. Not saying all, just most.
As expected, Stowe, VT is quite crowded during leaf peeping season ‘cause it’s stunning. That said, you were so very close to Smugglers Notch and awesome views. Parking a car is tough but there always seems to be room for bikes. And traffic on the Mountain Rd. is far more enjoyable than traffic in a big city. Always. Glad you are enjoying sweet New England!
Those connected farm buildings are known as big house, little house, back house, barn…. The big house is the main living area, the little house was known as the summer kitchen, where cooking took place in the summer to isolate the heat of the stove from the heat, off of that was the back house, which could be accessed without having to venture out in the weather, then the attached barn, all linked together to keep one out of the elements. And although beautiful, Bar Harbor and Acadia is pretty much avoided by the locals…
Enjoy your videos. Just an FYI, the longest virtual solar system drive is located in New South Wales, Australia. Built to scale and covers a distance of 91 miles
Great video - I felt like riding with you. And those places are so beautiful! A question about your cook book: Have you think or consider to publish it as an e-book? It would be much more convenient to have it on my iPad - I don't cary books with my on a motorcycle trip. Again, great video, thank you!
😂 All those layers make me feel like that kid in A Christmas Story! Can barely move 😅 Trying to decide if I would prefer to camp or stay at a lodge for a potential holiday up north in May. Sometimes you just have to say, I'm bloody worth it! 😂❤
The good thing about high quality layers is they're actually pretty thin/moveable AND warm even when layered up like that I still had full range of motion 😊
It's so good to hear that you feel the same way about those tourist towns!
One thing I like about your videos is that they give the feel of actually being on the ride... motorcyclists will understand. Good video!
Welcome to New England! This is where I spend most of my days, running around, in my semi truck!
That’s awesome! It’s a beautiful place, even in a semi 😉
Yes on the cold camping if equipped for it. Love your content. Great editing. You showing the roads you travel, costs, riding gear is helpful to fellow long-distance riders. I like your choice of background music too. Keep it up.
I appreciate it! I'm glad you like the music!

Thanks for the hospitality! 😉 Can't wait to share that episode!
Lol ya, service stations definitely could grow on me!

Loved Skowhegan, been a while but I remember the road out to the KOA.....and Bah Haabah...
😂
Well done . I never miss your post . Thank you for efforts to make every post a treat to watch .
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoy them! 🙏
Great looking views and nice roads. I guess really nice in fall with all the coloring of the trees.
I certainly want to go back
I’m glad you had a great time! Maine is awesome. I hope you do go back 😊
I don't camp much .at 68 years old, I've been there and done that. Try September in the northeast much better .
Great video. Thank you.
September is a great time to explore New England, but the colors were not as vibrant, I was following the color chart predictor. ALSO the timing just didn't work for me in 2023 lol I went when I could 😊
Beautiful! Tent camping
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
Another great production, the photography is excellant. Hopefully it will inspire more touring bikers to get out and see America.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 😃

Twin Mountain campground is fantastic and the couple that owns it are great people. The Kank is always a great ride.
The campground was lovely! I unfortunately rolled in a little too late to meet the owners 😔

A happy relaxing video to watch this morning. The world leaders should be required to watch Amanda’s videos, then we might have world peace.
Aww thank you that's very kind
I hope you had the chance to go through the town of Camden, ME . Hands down my most favorite place in the world! Beautiful little town. I try to visit every year with the plan to buy property there some day in the future
Bon jour Amanda. Greetings from Maine. I have always enjoyed Maine’s Acadian culture. Merci!

Yes the Canada Fall view is better
I’ve only been to Niagara once and have to agree the Canada side is much more beautiful
Great video! 👍🏻
I agree about avoiding the tourist towns. Hope you enjoyed my East coast nonetheless 😁👍🏻
I sure did! 😊
Yes to camping in 44. When it starts to get too hot (95+), i am bailing for a hotel room. 😊
I hope you made it to the beautiful 4 corners park in Madawaska near Ft Kent. It’s one of the 4 corners of the USA. Absolutely stunning park built for bikers!
NE in the fall is on my bucket list
💯 Worth it
You do more miles in one trip than some riders do in an entire year. Go girl!
Aww thank you 😊
I would have found a Motel......however, I have hammock camped when it got down to 25 degrees F.
I would definitely go for the hotel over camping in 5 degrees. You need to have a good nights sleep when you are riding as much as you are. Worth the extra $$ I believe. Have you ever thought about travelling Australia Amanda?
Happy New Year Amanda!😊
Happy New Year! 🎉
Motel! Maine cold weather is no joke. 😅
Great video. I’ve tried once to get to Maine but flooding stopped us at the border. Hope you haven’t waited too long to head west. 🤞
😉 lol just wait
Shoe tree in Milltown Indiana, You should make visiting all Shoe Trees a motorcycle pilgrimage. Al Bundy would be proud.
🤣 that would certainly be an idea
If I had known you were riding thru my neck of the woods you could have camped at the family farm for free. That's where the real saving are found. Lol
I know a few really good rides around here too.
Ми йдемо в довгі поїздки, щоб знайти спокій і щастя !
Honestly at 44°, I would have probably got a hotel with some heat, but that’s just me since I don’t HAVE to sleep outside in that anymore 😂
If wet, definitely hotel, if not would depend on how pretty the campground is.
😊👍
I have camped in 40 or lower, but was on fall fishing trip. I chose hotel these days lol
It definitely makes those hotel nights seem more appealing!
I believe I would pull a small cycle camper
I'll have to search through your videos, but how do you plot out your route and then follow it on GPS? I have such a hard time doing that, like loading a premade route. Maybe I need to do more research, hah! I love how you mix it up with hotels and camping - because there are those times when you need to be dry and warm. ☺
I enjoy camping in the cold but I won't do it more than one night in a row. It gets old quick.
$81 and no heat?
Well, I don't think I would camp in 70 degree weather. Can't get into carrying all the extra stuff
Both those days are wonderful every year.😉
Yes! You're exactly right, the Northeast in the Fall is a special kind of beautiful.
Great content. How do you like the Africa twin?
44C? Hotel. 44F? Still fine for tenting with the proper gear.
👍
I learned I can camp reasonably comfortably in 50's weather. Once it dips into the 40's I now know I won't get quality sleep.
👌
Nice. Aren’t afraid to leave your bike with all your stuff when you visit a place?
@@AstheMagpieFlies , I am always uncomfortable to leave it when I visit something even if it’s lock.
👍👍👍👍👍
Really enjoyed the music and colors of fall the music fit the ride. It’s a lot of work filming and editing. I’ll be watching. SJ
Thank you very much for recognizing my efforts 😊
"Grand Canyon"?
I don't understand your question
@AstheMagpieFlies My bad, thought you said something different than you did
Neetoo
At my age a hotel would be required. lol
☺️🤗
Are those earplugs in your ear ?
Those connected farm buildings are known as big house, little house, back house, barn…. The big house is the main living area, the little house was known as the summer kitchen, where cooking took place in the summer to isolate the heat of the stove from the heat, off of that was the back house, which could be accessed without having to venture out in the weather, then the attached barn, all linked together to keep one out of the elements. And although beautiful, Bar Harbor and Acadia is pretty much avoided by the locals…
Good practice for ALaska - re COLD camping.
Believe me I've had loads of practice way beyond this trip 😂
Enjoy your videos. Just an FYI, the longest virtual solar system drive is located in New South Wales, Australia. Built to scale and covers a distance of 91 miles
K
Im in waterford vermont. How are you surviving in this sh!t. Good luck
Great video - I felt like riding with you. And those places are so beautiful!
A question about your cook book: Have you think or consider to publish it as an e-book? It would be much more convenient to have it on my iPad - I don't cary books with my on a motorcycle trip.
Again, great video, thank you!
👏🏻🏍️🏕️👍🏻👍🏻
I would think visiting each state would mean the cities as well.
🤷 you can make up whatever rules you want for yourself and I have rules for me 😊
If you want to save on gas, try to find a Buc’ees when ever possible.
Not really possible when you're not on major interstates.
