Quite an impressive display of each vehicles good and not so good points in this particular test. What really does shine through though is the overall stability of the tray on the rear of the Unimog, basically it remains level until you get to the extreme holes. The main reason for the tray being steady and almost level is the live axles with their approximate 600mm of articulation. The trade off is a slower overall speed on interesting terrain if you really wish to push the vehicles, but everything has a price. If you watch the side camera on the Unimog you can really see the cabin flexing with the front part of the chassis, while the flexible tray mount remains fairly steady as the chassis underneath writhes around like a serpent in a hurry. I have an Isuzu NPS 300 (made in Japan) which is a 7500kg factory 4x4 vehicle (Australia) converted to single wheels (rear duals standard) with a complete suspension change. It too has approximately 600mm of wheel articulation due to live axles. While our tray is spring mounted on four points of each chassis rail for a total of 8 spring mounts, the Isuzu doesn't have quite the same amount of apparent chassis flex as the Unimog. But our chassis certainly flexes, the cabin twists with the front part of the chassis, the axles go up and down like yo yo's while the tray remains basically level; until one gets to the extremes. Our camper is on the back of the truck, permanently bolted to the tray. Our maximum travelling weight is around 6000kg fully fueled and watered, reducing to around 5500kg as fuel and water are used; well within the comfortable rough road range capability of the vehicle and it eats sand dunes for breakfast. I would like to see a future test of some of your vehicles running at approximately 80% of their stated gross vehicle mass. I can tell you from decades of experience once you load a vehicle to its rough road gross vehicle mass, the dynamics really change and I think you may also find it interesting to see just what they are capable of doing when loaded like that.
Having been a passenger in the back of each of these vehicles I’ll tell you it feels much safer in the back of a Hummer. The Unimog is terrifyingly tippy.
They are different vehicles. Nothing can beat clearence and nothing has a Mogs clearence. I drove plenty of Humvees while in the army. The were very capable but were "fragile" they needed a ton of maintenance. The diesel engine is slow and weak. The unimog is a unique vehicle in that its a multipurpose off road contraption that serves as a basis for a myriad of heavy duty purposes. Its rude and crude but does things that no other can do.
On a side note, I was in Washington D.C when the servicemen were returning from Kuwait. Several complaints I heard from them was 1. that in full tactical gear the driving position you had one cheek on the seat pad and one off. 2. they had to carry multiple alternator belts.
The Unimog having Portal axels more ground clearance, anyway I hear this Humvee having a Diesel engine. I like this with Pickup configuration. Did you fit in the engine youself?
They started out with a GM "Detroit" 6.2L with around 150hp. Later they were upgraded to a GEP 6.5L with around 160hp (Some of the older trucks were retro-fitted with these) And later on again, they got a GEP 6.5L Turbo-Diesel. with around 200 hp.
The only real comparison test that I thought might have been achievable would have been too see which one's paint hung on the best/longest. Even then with the Mog's clearance I think the BUMMER-HMMWE would have lost out on that as well. Although what can you honestly expect from a Tarted-Up Chevy that isn't even safe to get shot at in??? Ye'ha
The Unimog due to being high wheel narrow base is prone to tipping, almost lost it a couple points (if loaded with cargo it very likely would have), but did not high center. The Hmmwv being low wheel base and wide takes a lot to tip it, but with the height of the mounds nearly got stuck to high centering. Both did good and bad with neither actually beating the other.
The UNIMOG is engineered nearly 80 years ago and still, in his basics, the same despite some more electronics and design. Have been and driving one in the manufacture Off-Round testing facilities in Gaggenau (Germany). She just ignores every obstacle. The HMMWV in made for another object. Great vid anyway.
The purpose of military vehicles is not the only off-road tracks. Both of them passed this track but the Unimog is higher which means it's easy target on the battle field.
Unimog clearly. If it was loaded a bit more, it would have gone through that even without the need for differential locks perhaps. The Humvee meanwhile is close to giving up on traction in the last hole...
Unimog quickest, least wheelspin, fewest pauses. Definitely the Unimog has the better drivetrain. But the Unimog's high centre of gravity looks like it might lead to a rollover if the obstacles were just a little deeper, whereas the Humvee always looked well-planted.
Interesting. The IMG, has incredible suspension articulation, but more body roll, the wheels always on the ground, the HV was tricycling through most holes, it progress was more intermittent, as the traction control had to work harder, the rigid frame seemed to provide less body roll. Interesting would be to see them both do the same path loaded. Thanks for this vid. A modern UM may be much improved??
Maybe it's better next Time just to stop and then try to drive. In this Video we see how flixible the Chassis and Suspensions are. Which is very good how you showed us. But when you stop at the Obstacles and try to start, we see which Locking System is doing a better Job. Thanks.
That reminds me of a comparison with a GAZ Tigr, an IVECO, a URAL 4x4 and a HMMWV in winter. The snow was 1 meter deep. The GAZ has no problems with that, neither does the URAL, the IVECO had its difficulties and the HMMWV capitulated after about 10 meters. The design of the front axle turned out to be disadvantageous in deep snow.
Interesting seeing a hummer off road (I still don’t understand them🤷♂🤣🤦♂) if I remember right a 406/416 is supposed to flex around 600cm (24inches) you also nicely showed the chassis flex as well… the reason you don’t weld or drill mog chassis and have 3 point mountings 👍
Both are good and it is really enjoyable to see what they can do and it would be nice to see how both of them do in deep mud 🤔? Also if you can test a military car called Sisu gtp on these two 🤔🤩
it looked to me the wheelbase on the humvee was longer? so it did not get maximum effect of being in the hole with one front tire while on top of the hump with the opposite rear. There would have been more teeter tottering in my mind. my feeling is that a metric ton of cargo would also make a difference.
Interesting, I was surprised at how much the mog's wheels came off the ground. It was expected for the Hummer with IFS/IRS. I guess they both made it through, so both win.
These vehicles have different strengths and are for different uses. Unimog more for worse roads and messed forest paths at slower pace. I think humvee specializes more for faster speeds over shitty roads. In most cases you’ll be able to go through more challenging terrain with the unimog. In the hummveee you can go faster through medium challenge terrain and feel confident you won’t bounce on to your side. There’s a few climbing tricks the H1 can do that the unimog won’t and vice versa. Both are amazing, just depends what your using em for.
I agree these vehicles have different purposes and capabilities no vehicle with a length as short as the HMMWV has any "flex" compact sedans are longer. If we wanted to compare drive it next to a lmtv or something
@@beartankoperator7950 H1 is a combat car and the successor to the jeep. The Unimog is a light GP cargo truck. proper comparison would be between the H1 and Merc G-Class. Closest thing to a Uni would be a M809 or a M939
On the unimogs, you usually can't chose between front or rear locker. both will be activated with the same leaver (or knob) and come on and off, together. And for the Humvee/Hummer. the simple awnser is yes. And the complicated awnser is, military Humvee's like this one, do not have "Normal" differentails and lockers. they have "Torsen-Differentials" and that, combined with how the drivetrain is built, means that you can lock-up those differentials, by applying brake pressure, to even the rasistance on both wheels, giving it the effect of locked differentials.

It was patented in 1948 so it's 44 years older and it was initially ment to be some kind of a tractor whereas the hummer was ment to be a modern avantgarde military vehicle.
Although i feel the Unimog is the better all-terrain vehicle remember the Hummer is "Multi Role" and is designed to be air dropped from a plane into the field so...
The Unimog never even spun a wheel and no need to stop to engage 4 WD, flick a switch (if it was needed at all?) Not to say the Hummer was bad, I was quite impressed with it too.
There is quite a difference in age too. 75 compared with 89 don’t you think that there would be a tech disparity. I drove the 85 to 90 model mog in the ADF I’m sure it would be better that this old one.
Try using some STP with bars stop leak.,or you can get some Lucas oil stabilizer.& Pure zinc additives to add into the Lucas.& Then you add that into your motor 🛢️ oil. I highly recommend to changing it again first after heating it up to drain out completely no drips.& Change oil filters out to. And remember to make sure that the old one comes off with that oil filter everytime to when replacing them to.

You are trying to flex the vehicles without load. HMMWV only flex on springs. The Unimog is designed so that in addition to the springs, the frame also works. Both vehicles are amazing and do a great job of their original tasks.
By occasion I just learned today elsewhere what acronym UNIMOG means. UNiversal MOtor Gerät. I really think the UNIMOG did better here. I know any design contains a lot of compromises. Comparing these two vehicles anywhere else might produce opposite 'result'.
Unimog, but try the Pinzgauer also! It is smal and light, but also has portal axes. It is maybe superior even to the Unimog, which is considered the gold standard. The Hummer also has drinking and reliability issues. Its room concept is ridiculously decadent either, not suited for the European scenario, imho.

From a military perspective this is not an easy problem to answer. Both covered the course. The Humvee Had an easier transition overground. It lacks f & r diff locks . That's a very poor failing for drivers to cope with. But marks for making it. Equally the Mog is a cork in a bottle experience that is demanding on passengers, tiring to ride in and not it's sole purpose. More lading will Introduce stability. As ballast. The 411 then as a material transport is very able. It must win for that purpose. The HMV for carrying grunts and their munitions wins on sure footed ability and comfort. It lacks technical components however that is a fatal embarrassment should it get stuck at a regroup manoeuvre. I've seen it get screwed over during turn around in modern theatres becoming a target for enemy fire. The Merc isn't in that field of purpose. Not really a patrol vehicle. It's a logistics vehicle. One I prefer over the APC on rubber.
The other thing is that a Unimog is not really designed to be pushed out of the back of a plane. I'm someone, somewhere has tried to airdrop a Unimog but it's not really designed with that in mind....
I think the Unimog gets through the test track quicker, the higher ground clearance and greater torsional freedom gives it a visible advantage over the Hummer, which has to balance everything with the chassis.

you are a very talented mechanic, and seems like a helluva guy..thx for great content w/o annoying music or pining for money every other minute..your site will continue to grow..never change..have fun, be safe..
totally agree
Thank you very much, i really do appriciate it!
And thanks for wacthing along!
Thanks, I chose the Unimog!
Having been a passenger in the back of each of these vehicles I’ll tell you it feels much safer in the back of a Hummer. The Unimog is terrifyingly tippy.

There's no better vehicle in the world than the Unimog 🥰
Deffo the Unimog for me, but I'm biased as I have a 1976 406 and two 1987 1300L Unimogs 🙂
the unimog made it look easy i thought was going to turn over but no skiding like the hummer unimog is the champ
2. they had to carry multiple alternator belts.
unimog, must admit i thought at one stage it was going to roll over but it coped really well.
^What THEY say about my 2CV 6 Club!
Unimog trumps the Humvee on the twists every time! :)
The Mog will always be the Belle of the Ball, no contest
Unimog Absolutely 👍
the unimog i definitely would like to see more comparison video please
The Unimog having Portal axels more ground clearance, anyway I hear this Humvee having a Diesel engine.
I like this with Pickup configuration.
Did you fit in the engine youself?
All Humvee's have Diesel engines.
It was only the later civillian Hummer's that would come with gasoline engines :)
Thanks for watching!
@@KJOff-Road
Thanks for the information.
Was this a Detroit engine?
Specs please?
They started out with a GM "Detroit" 6.2L with around 150hp.
Later they were upgraded to a GEP 6.5L with around 160hp (Some of the older trucks were retro-fitted with these)
And later on again, they got a GEP 6.5L Turbo-Diesel. with around 200 hp.
Great Video. Do it Again....
The only real comparison test that I thought might have been achievable would have been too see which one's paint hung on the best/longest. Even then with the Mog's
clearance I think the BUMMER-HMMWE would have lost out on that as well. Although what can you honestly expect from a Tarted-Up Chevy that isn't even safe to get
shot at in???
The Unimog is far more stable against tipping than you would think. It just flexes.
Thankful.
Unimog have a good tweest.
Unimog is my choice.👍🏻 more like this..
Unimog is the best
The purpose of military vehicles is not the only off-road tracks. Both of them passed this track but the Unimog is higher which means it's easy target on the battle field.
Unimog clearly. If it was loaded a bit more, it would have gone through that even without the need for differential locks perhaps. The Humvee meanwhile is close to giving up on traction in the last hole...
Thanks for video!
Brave Ukraine!!!
Unimog 💪 20 years older and just getting it done 🤘👊
A Unimog of the same age would allways win.
Maybe it's better next Time just to stop and then try to drive.
In this Video we see how flixible the Chassis and Suspensions are. Which is very good how you showed us.
But when you stop at the Obstacles and try to start, we see which Locking System is doing a better Job.
Thanks.
Unimog over hmmwv any day every day 😂
(Love the hmmwv because it’s iconic, but unimog is just nigh impossible to beat!)
Unimog did it more smooth. show us more!
The concept of the Unimog ist 40years older but still the best for 4wheeler...
Both are good and it is really enjoyable to see what they can do and it would be nice to see how both of them do in deep mud 🤔? Also if you can test a military car called Sisu gtp on these two 🤔🤩
The Unimog has a shorter wheelbase and more articulation. But why does the Hummer driver stops briefly right down in the hole?
it looked to me the wheelbase on the humvee was longer? so it did not get maximum effect of being in the hole with one front tire while on top of the hump with the opposite rear. There would have been more teeter tottering in my mind. my feeling is that a metric ton of cargo would also make a difference.
You can drive the Humvee to the place where Unimog starts. 😉
When terrain gets harder Unimog shows Humwie how it goes.
You use the front and rear locker, if you drive with the unimog? The hummer h1, has also lockers?
On the unimogs, you usually can't chose between front or rear locker.
both will be activated with the same leaver (or knob) and come on and off, together.
And for the Humvee/Hummer. the simple awnser is yes.
And the complicated awnser is, military Humvee's like this one, do not have "Normal" differentails and lockers. they have "Torsen-Differentials" and that, combined with how the drivetrain is built, means that you can lock-up those differentials, by applying brake pressure, to even the rasistance on both wheels, giving it the effect of locked differentials.
I know torsen differentials, my delta integrale has also such differentials, thank you for the answer
That humvee looks awesome but I think the unimog is much better
🔵🔵🔵👍👍👍😀😀😀🔵🔵🔵
no contest Unimog FTW
Next can you test the Toyota mega cruiser against the hummer?
I would love to test a Mega Cruiser!
But to my knowledge, there isn't even a sigle one of those, here in the county.
Thanks for your comments, and thanks for watching!
The Fennek would also be an interesting comparison for the Hummer.
It sure would!
I always thought the Fennek looked really cool and interesting.
But i have never even seen one in real life.
Thanks for watching!
If scoring on style, the Unimog wins!
And then imagine unimog concept is 30 years older.
It was patented in 1948 so it's 44 years older and it was initially ment to be some kind of a tractor whereas the hummer was ment to be a modern avantgarde military vehicle.
Tatra VS Unimog please :-)
I would love to test a Tatra :)
@@KJOff-Road Yeah please there should be one to hire even in USA

Hi. Nice vídeo.
I think the Unimog was better.
Although i feel the Unimog is the better all-terrain vehicle remember the Hummer is "Multi Role" and is designed to be air dropped from a plane into the field so...
You should see Unimogs 419 (same as video but with backhoe and front loader) been air dropped
I think the Unimog is better, it has all wheels on Ground.
Just like my 2CV 6Club in corners 😛
The US military used unimogs. They were a combat engineer swiss army knife
And we’re designed to drop by parachute.
The Unimog never even spun a wheel and no need to stop to engage 4 WD, flick a switch (if it was needed at all?)
Not to say the Hummer was bad, I was quite impressed with it too.
Neither vehicle needs to stop to engage 4WD.
There is quite a difference in age too. 75 compared with 89 don’t you think that there would be a tech disparity. I drove the 85 to 90 model mog in the ADF I’m sure it would be better that this old one.
That would indeed be more fitting.
I just didn't have one of those, on hand :)
Fill that mixed with half &half motor& the Lucas mixture along with oiling the ring seal. And remember to make sure that the old one comes off with that oil filter everytime to when replacing them to.
Love the 416 I am currently building 1 ;7 scale model of a Sandf Buffel based on the 416 chassis
What on earth is that?

*Tiny one - OLD 75mm from who knows when, the engineers said.
Cool!
You are trying to flex the vehicles without load. HMMWV only flex on springs. The Unimog is designed so that in addition to the springs, the frame also works. Both vehicles are amazing and do a great job of their original tasks.
UNIMOG invincibile 💪🏻🚜🔥💣😜
Sind beide Fahrzeuge Meilensteine in der Technik wobei mir persönlich der unimog besser gefällt. 👍🇩🇪
By occasion I just learned today elsewhere what acronym UNIMOG means. UNiversal MOtor Gerät. I really think the UNIMOG did better here. I know any design contains a lot of compromises. Comparing these two vehicles anywhere else might produce opposite 'result'.
I think, I prefer the Mog but Hummer wasn't bad - not as consistent in it's forward movement, though.
I would love to try out a Pinzgauer! :)
They both did quite well, the merc is a bit better, but I am sure you can find something else that the humv does better
Apple vs Orange.
But fun to watch.
My 2 cents:
For fun, the Unimog.
In a battlezone, the Humvee. Lover (harder to spot and a smaller target) and a more stable weapons plattform. Cant imagine shooting a M2 bravo out of the Unimog, let alone 40 mike mike.
Did shoot the MG3 out of the Unimog, not pleasant at all.
How does the rear part of the UNIMOG rotate compared to the cab? Is there a mechanism that does fhis, or is it just frame flex?
I is "Just" the frame that is Flexing. but unlike many other trucks, it's by design, and all part of the unimogs suspension.
FFS! Not even gonna' leave a comment...og så alligevel...Naaah! TeamArmyTrucks knows which Team i'm in/on/etc.
1 over norm for glimragende video, folkens :-)
Now seen: YUP! Flawless Victory to Unimog 416!
Skal dog siges mht. Hmmm-something: Den ægte vare har jeg kuns prøvet to gange inde i base! Mowag Eagle 1 derimod... Åh-åh! Hvis ikke på fladt banet vej, så... 😲
Mog rules!
Definitely more flex in the Uni, but which one ultimately shows a smaller silhouette in a combat situation?

Mog, hands down.
Hmmwv’s flex like crazy if you disconnect the swaybars
I hope you have for the Humvee iin a war a tankcar off the road because he need very many Fuel fpr drive.
Very good points. and i do agree.
These two were indeed made/selected for completely different roles, in their armed forces.
Thanks for watching!
The other thing is that a Unimog is not really designed to be pushed out of the back of a plane. I'm someone, somewhere has tried to airdrop a Unimog but it's not really designed with that in mind....
@@ckm-mkc So best = dropped from plane! BMD?
