    Actually where I live some of the stores let any dogs come in, as long as they're leashed, friendly, and under control, like pets smart, big lots, ace hardware, home depot, Lowe's, and walmart. Atleast where I live. And even stores allow small dogs, in a personal item, like stroller. I always take my girl, to these stores, when I go.

      Walmart is not supposed to, they just decide to not follow their own policy and federal law. Why have a policy that clearly say's SERVICE DOGS ONLY (next time you go to Walmart, look on the door and you will see the sign. it's blue) if your not gonna follow it.

I bring him into public places because he is still in training and I try to take him into as many places as possible so he gets used to it. I always ask the manager if it’s ok. Cooper the Service puppy at a public school, youre covered by the ada so its illegal for them to deny you. theyre considered part of your 504 plan (accomodation for disability or illness). with a private school, you arent covered by the ada so you can be denied. as far as that goes you may want to get a doctors note and show them vaccinations and paperwork (they may ask for registration, but you dont have to give it to them). for private schools i reccomend watching service angel percie, she went to a private high school. i hope this helps :)

Sadly, lot's of SD channels I watch, their dogs just from what I could see, would not pass a CGC (basic obedience)...which is why a lot of them likely don't do it. Even if I needed a Service Dog and we have proof and my Psychologist and EMDR specialist has meet our 2 elderly well-behaved dogs at home and 4 cats and have given a documentation that both dogs we have worked with to help me in some forms of tasking for my CPTSD and won't hinder a Service Dog.
    When I need a Service Dog to work with me outside of the house where EMS dogs cant go. I'm told after paying $$$$ upfront that they decide NO because they won't acknowledge my senior dogs regardless of the EMS documentation and are good behaved. I was even told by one it would be distractions for Service Dog despite my specialist seeing and knowing thats not true, we work with our two elderly dogs to help me and that still means nothing. I need a Service Dog to help me manage my CPTSD outside of the home more so than in home except for night terrors. I was told by another "surrender your dogs or wait till they are both dead before reaching back out to us for a Service Dog from them" I went into full CPTSD attack vomiting and severe migraine and partial disassociation couldn't believe I'd be told something like that from a Service Dog Facility it destroyed me emotionally and mentally to hear them say get rid of or wait till they die if you want a Service Dog through them, I was disheartened and disgusted and wanted to give up on getting a Service Dog even though I knew I needed one in order to live again outside of my home with my CPTSD. Why do that after charging $$$$ for applications and upfront skype fee they'd go and do such a thing. I'm 39 and am a Rescue Adoption Shelter Animal Advocate never thought to hear such monsterous words from a Service Dog Facility after giving them $$$$ of my money while trying to raise the 1st $5,000 needed to be put down to start if selected. How can a Service Dog Facility do that?
    If the Service Dog Facility one of 5 we have wasted $$$$$ on application and intervies by 4 others who said no because they didn't acknowledge the documentation by my Pschologist and EMDR Specialist my 2 senior dogs were not an issue, if this 5th one says No I don't know what I'll do, and no we won't give up my beloved EMS pets, yet I'd have to give back $7,000 raised for my needed Service Dog if it doesn't work out. I don't want to wait till I'm 60 either to qualify based on this issue over EMS pets in house.

      this was two weeks ago so sorry if this comment is annoying lol. anybody with a diagnosis on a disability can qualify for an ESA with just a doctors note. to qualify for a service dog you need at least one mental or physical disability that prevents you from a major aspect in life (like talking, bending over, thinking, walking, eating, etc. the ADA defines it more clearly) so technically a lot of people can qualify for a SD but as a rule of thumb it should be bad enough to where you cant work or go to school

    I live in Canada (in canada you NEED a written note from either a therapist or doctor with your diagnosis and approval of needing a Service Dog. Basically you have to be prescribed a service dog) I have my written approval for a psychiatric Service Dog but Im having trouble picking the best breed. I have a dog currently but he’s 7 (clearly to old to be trained and a mutt lol) I have narrowed my breed choices down to 4 main ones: German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Saint Bernard and Lab. I have done research on every breed and I am looking for a bigger dog not only to effectively alert to my disabilities and perform DPT but to help with mobility when/if needed. What would be the best breed choices based on your (or anyone else’s) experience owner training a SD? A lot of ppl I have asked have recommended a Shepherd but I have no experience with any of those breeds and Im worried that I will suck at owner training lol. Any advice is greatly appreciated 🙏🏻 Thanks!

      Goldens are 100% the best choice for new handlers. They are easy to train and can be bred to have amazing work drive. Not to mention they are beautiful. If you want a not so common SD, I would chose a SB because of their size and work drive. GSDs are very floofy and require lots of exercise (like all dogs but GSDs typically require more)

    By law does diagnosed disability mean a person must be receiving disability and legally unable to work or can it include a diagnosed disabling condition that majorly effects the person? I am diagnosed With both PTSD and BPD,was looking into getting a service dog for physc but want to know if that trained dog (alerting me to triggered behavours or giving pressure therapy etc) would be, in terms of general public access protected under the law mentioned?

    • @annagrace2713
      @annagrace2713 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can have a service dog for PTSD, as it does count as a disability and is very serious. The ADA does not limit what a disability is, as long as the disability a person clams to have effect's their day to day tasks, meaning it makes it hard for you to do everyday things such as go out in public, go to school, stand in large crowds, etc.

    I have a question....is Extreme Depression, General Anxiety and ADHD considered a disability if it stops me from going into public and stops me from attending school? My dad doesn’t believe in mental illness and he just wants me to go to school... my school is too much and I really can’t go and I’m in the progress of trying to move school, I’m 14, should I attempt to ask for a service dog?

    • @decay09

      if it disables you from doing major things in your life, like thinking or eating etc, then its a disability. the ADA law defines it a little more clearly but a rule of thumb is if you cant work or go to school, then its severe enough to qualify.
      i am 17 and had to quit normal highschool and go for online school because of severe social anxiety, depression and other things. im lucky that i already own a dog who is a good candidate, and we will do public access when we are at a good enough spot in training.
      i REALLY recommend the blog actuallyservicedogs.tumblr.com , there is a lot of good information there (especially in the FAQ) and reading through the answers to questions. i know somewhere on it is a specific post about convincing your parents about it too :)

I’ve talked to my parents about it a little but haven’t really had a serious conversation because we are about to move and won’t be able to get one until then but we hope to move before 2019 or at the very very least early 2019 any advice?p.s I’ve already looked up the laws for qualifying and ownership/training and average costs for different things...

      First of all, nobody is a medical professional. And if you're doctor think's you're disabled then you qualify for a service dog. You by law have to be disabled in order to qualify for a service dog. Also quick note you can be any age, religion, race, and ethnicity in order to have a service dog. Talk with you're doctor, if you don't like them change them. JS nobody here can tell you whether you qualify for a SD or not. It's not all about taking a dog everywhere, and it's certainly not fun.

    • @OfficiallyLydiasLife
      @OfficiallyLydiasLife 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is false. Unless u will be needing a letter for no pet housing (or no pet deposit) or airlines, or maybe even a school or work, technically u don't have to have a letter by the ADA. U do have to have a diagnosed disability according to the ADA but your dog does not have to be "Recorded as a treatment plan". Because no insurance will pay for a SD so it doesn't matter if its "recorded" or not because insurance isn't monitoring it. And even when I went in to get my letter for housing, they just had a copy they print out for everyone. (Because of the Fair housing law it covers both SDs and ESAs under the same FHA Law, which I was really upset about, I had them specify at the botton of the letter he was a SD and not just a ESA. It took alot to get them to though but I fealt I needed the exact wording. but they just print out the same letter for everyone that needs a letter for housing). But unless you specifically will need somthing from your doctor, its not important for them to know immediately. Unless of course u wanted advice from them. But all it takes it a diagnosed disability that a task trained SD can help migrate. Also some programs and trainers might ask for a dr note. But technically if u didn't need anything from your doctor it doesn't matter if they know. My doctor didn't know right away about my dog, until he was trained enough to go with me and I moved out so then needed a letter. But because of my disabilities all my doctors where already on board with it so it was no problem getting the stuff I needed. But I knew what I needed and what would help me. Since insurance won't cover a SD, and so there is no "prescription" for them, it wasn't important for them to know right away. Maybe if I needed advice but I didn't. I already knew how my dog would beable to help me by alerting, tasking, and responding that I didn't need my doctors help deciding it. So it depends on your situation and how fast u need to talk to your doctor about it. If u want advice its always good to talk to them. But if your like me, know what u need, then if u have q diagnosed disabilitiy it's not a huge problem telling them right away unless u want to.

    • @tatis6723
      @tatis6723 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To have your service dog in school, it has to be included with your accommodations. To do this, your guardian has to set up a meeting with the school to create a 504 plan or an accommodation plan similar to that. If it is a public school or a school that receives state funding, they have to allow the dog. Unfortunately, if your at a private school, they can deny you. Hope this helps! Can you get a service dog if you have really bad anxiety and panic attacks, and if you have self harm tendencies?

    • @annagrace2713
      @annagrace2713 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but you have to got diagnosed by a doctor or psychiatrist with a mental disorder such as G.A.D (generalized anxiety disorder) and P.D (panic disorder) which are the two that I have. Then you have to decide if your disorder is bad enough to be a disability. But even if you have a disorder like G.A.D or P.D, you should not just jump to service dog. Try therapy, medicine, coping kills, meditation and literally EVERYTHING else before you get a service animal. Please realize that training a service animal takes hours of days of months of years, and can be extremely mentally challenging with someone who already has stress disorders and such. It's also a huge responsibility. You should do months of research before getting a prospect to MAYBE become a service dog. And please realize that it is NOT as great as it seems to have a dog with you all the time... TRUST ME!

      Under AODA it talks about a grey area where you could potentially get a note for a symptom rather then an overall disability. So if you have a problem with panic attacks (but aren't formally diagnosed with a panic disorder) and your doctor/NP gives you a note for your dog to assist you with your panic attacks, under AODA, that counts as an SD.
      It kinda make sense, because health care in Canada takes FOOOOOOOREVER. You want to see a specialist, you will be waiting until next year. It took me 9 months to get into one of my specialist. Coulda have trained an SD by then.

      Haha. It’s good knowledge, know your rights then people can’t push you around like a carousel. Makes you go crazy eventually.

      But to many people take advantage of the flexibility of a service dog. I have so called service dogs come in and jump on other customers, jump on shelves and bite merchandise or lick toys. I never call someone out or kick out any service dog even if I call bs. but it's sad When you ask for payment for damages from there dog, they just start rambling on about service dog rights and threaten to sue you.

      They can’t sue you if their dog ruined the merchandise because their dog is supposed to be trained to even be allowed in public. So in all honestly you couldn’t get in trouble. And you can kick them out. That’s also the problem with businesses is that they don’t recognize the dog isn’t an actual service dog and doesn’t kick people out.

      Isis Moak at a public school, youre covered by the ada so its illegal for them to deny you. theyre considered part of your 504 plan (accomodation for disability or illness). with a private school, you arent covered by the ada so you can be denied. as far as that goes you may want to get a doctors note and show them vaccinations and paperwork (they may ask for registration, but you dont have to give it to them). for private schools i reccomend watching service angel percie, she went to a private high school. i hope this helps :)

    My mom is sending me to therapy to get a recommendation for a service dog

      Have you tried having therapy sessions, and medication and such before hand? you shouldn't just jump right in "a service dog is what I need" because though it seems great to have a dog with you all the time who's cute, AND helps you, it's not. Trust me. I would give anything to be able to have gotten better without a service dog. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love my dog and he is the best thing that's ever happened to me. But Service dog's are package deal. They bring many great things by helping you, but they also bring many unwanted things, like extra attention, having to deal with access issues, people staring, kids running up to you or talking to your dog, people judging you because you "don't like like you have a disability" (smh that one annoys me so much), people trying to start stuff with you, having fake service dog's bark at your real one, and such. Just make sure your ready for it.
