That's why I think he should try more bikes that are like this instead of the traditional motorcycles he rides in reviews it would give him a different perspective
A lot of Americans who have been riding all their lives don't really know all about small bikes. 300-400cc is already considered small for them while in other countries those are part of the middle weight segment. Grom boom is probably the only reason 125 segment has grown relevance in the US.
@@brygs767 I would totally agree most Americans go for the bigger faster bike to 600 750s and bigger you hardly ever see people on a Vespa GTS 300 or anything like that and I think it would bring a different perspective to his channel and make him appreciate the smaller bikes more then just saying I want to Honda cbr1000rr
To ease downshifting: while you push the pedal the clutch is disengaged, and it will stay so until you let go of the shift lever. You don't have to get off it right away. I stay on it for half a second and rev-match with the throttle, so there's less of a drive train shock. And yes, upshifting should be with the throttle rolled back during the shift, otherwise it'll be a bit rough shift. It sounds complicated, but there is a rhythm to it all, that you'll learn very quickly.
@Kyushu Brit my daily motorcycle is 'semi clutch' like this. So there's no clutch handle itself. It's actually similar to convensional motobike with clutch but what makes them different is (as explained on top comment) the clutch is pulled when you downshift and upshift. Then the clutch is back right when you loose your feet makes it feels rough if you can't 'feel' the right rpm with gear. When upshifting it's similar to how you pulled throttle. But when downshiting, it's other story. The thing is, engine with wouldn't run with high rpm, so when you slowdown (but not until stopped) you have to feel "I have to downshift", when the engine feels weak. (Well it's still similar) Throttle down, downshift, but before you let the shift back, pull throttle little bit just little bit, then you can let the shift back. Well it's hard to described it in words. You have to try yourself, and use it until you getting used to it.
I bought one in April and love it! I’m new into riding and enjoy just getting out. Plus I like the history on these bikes. A couple things: 1) rev-matching smooths out the downshifts nicely. No worries. 2) you left out MPG’s! This thing gets 120 mpg!!!
@@HawkeyeMO72 it also depends on your state, in california is HAS to be 50cc or lower AND 2.0 brake horsepower or less, and even then you have to register it (only once for 23 bucks)

Best job ever, this bike was so fun and learnt to tackle many different terrains and situations. We have to attend the Honda Approved Rider Training (H.A.R.T) and pass a test. Do not let the size put you off I did a tour from England around Scotland and back 1710 miles of riding, I actually rode on only 4 of the 7 days I was away and carried 30+ kg of gear on the back as it is rated for 150kg between rider and passenger seats. the bike is a blast on B roads and comes into it's own on single track roads with passing places.
Honestly, best touring I've done was on small bikes and Vespas. Who wants to ride motorways anyway? Sadly, there are basically no single track roads where I live. Guess I gotta head to Scotland haha
To downshift smoothly on these semi automatic gearbox, you let go of the throttle...push the gear pedal and hold it there...blip the throttle and release the gear pedal. When you hold the gear pedal it's like you're pulling in the clutch on a typical motorcycle so you'll be able to rev-match downshift
I’ve had mine for a month. Everything he says and more; awesome. Not for you if you’re only into biggish engine bikes, but super fun and very well designed all the way around. I commute on it daily and it’s such a fun way to get to and from work.
My late grandfather' Honda Cub still kicking even now. Mileage? Dunno. The meter died hundreds of thousand of kilometers ago, or 11 years ago hahah. The bike is over 50yo now. It got its engine overhauled service only twice from extreme wear until now, the last was in 2013. My mechanic said it was still in a good condition during the last oil, filter, and spark plug change in January. Got it from my dad since pre-covid and been using it daily to commute and weaving through city traffics to my workplace. XDDDDD

The shifter was designed to enable commuters to shift up with the heel and avoid scuffing their work shoes. Who would agree with me that we should see more Unique Kind of motorcycles on this channel from Vespa GTS 300 maybe a Honda Ruckus and other things I think it would be more of a standout than just a typical sport bike but who agrees with that that's why I think this is a very unique video cuz it's not the same old thing
I have about 8K miles on mine now and I love it! I saved so much on gas this summer. I take it to the country roads, and regularly keep up with the posers on big bikes in the turns. it's all you need if you don't need to go on the freeway alot.
I bought one of these, and I love this bike! I’ve ridden bigger bikes in the past, but I have more fun on this Super Cub than my previous 900cc bikes I’ve owned. Mpg is amazing! I will never sell this bike.
Seeing you wear full gear on the Cub makes me realize how strange I must look wearing all my Revit gear while riding mine, but ayo I've gone 72mph down 316 and 285 with this thing all the time and I don't' trust half the MF's in ATL. You're pretty bold taking it thru 400, I feel like even my Z06 gets tramped from all the psychos on that road😂
I have a 2020 and they are absolute joys to ride. It's like hone you're a kid and you wish you could shove a lawnmower engine into your bicycle, this is basically the result.
I have a 2019 Supercub. I live in a small town in the midwest. Everything's within 3 miles. Grocery, restaurants, banks, govt offices, taverns, haircuts...etc...and the speed limit never gets above 35mph. (mostly it's 25) The SC is perfect for this kind of riding. If I want to go out of town, I have a regular motorcycle for that. But I don't want to drag a 500lb motorcycle out to run 2 miles to the grocery store for milk and eggs. In town/city riding, this thing is great. If you need to be above 45mph for extended periods of time, this is not your machine. Do NOT take a SC on the highway. You have NO power to pass or get out of danger.
I just literally purchased one last week, waiting for delivery. Waited 3-6 months for one lol. Fyi, sold the 600rr for this. Was living too fast on that, its time to go slower lol
I had a 1000RR...but the only roads that are good (curvy) going to work are 35mph...and here its a felony to go 30mph over the speed limit....so like you said...time to slow it down...and see the sights.
I actually have one and it always puts a smile on my face and I even get respect from old Harley guys when I pass. I dug the big semi behind you giving you safe passage. What's great about the Cub is stability and it does 50mph all day. Brakes suck.

I saw many of these in Japan '84-'87 when I lived there; the fairing part was often white, and it seemed alot of the older folks rode these. I just remember a LOT of scooters there...
After driving the interstates for years with a 150cc I'm sure I would love to drive a Super Cub across the country. I found following Trucks and Suv's I could double my gas mile and turn the throttle down so the engine was never breathing hard.
Always fun watching Chase do the inverted learning. Finds out things we've known about since the 70s or earlier (semi auto gearbox). The shifter is identical to all motorcycles. Down for lower, up for higher gears... just paired with the typical cruiser style heel shift. Seems he knows every bell and whistle on most new cutting edge modern bikes, which is ironic to me 😅. Funny how times change so fast even the old well known things get thrown out the window haha. Love these little things.
In most Asian contries, for example, Vietnam, all semi auto gearbox's shift is inverted (Down for higher gears, up for lower gears), it's a bit weird for me to see a inverted shift pattern in the Cub sold in America :))
@@phammanh2689 I've never heard of a 'step thru' with a gearchange up for up..I've ridden C50 in 1975...C90's in 2000's..ANF125 Innova..110i Wave..all have same direction..down for up..from top gear when stopped down into neutral..down for first..etc..I haven't ridden a conventional gearbox for like 20 years..I'd be confused with the reverse gearing on a cub..
@@markianclark9645 You should come to Vietnam mate, 100% of semi-auto motorcycles (like this Cub 125) are the same shift pattern (down for upshift, up for downshift), only the manual clutch motorcycle have the same shift pattern (one down, the rest is up) :))
I read somewhere that in the rest of the world (non-US), shifting is reverse on the super cub than it is here, which would be more intuitive. Pushing down on the front shifter moves you up a gear, and pushing down on the rear shifter moves you down a gear.
I've had my big twin, Harley Softail for 30 years and I can't wait to pick up my new Super Cub this Saturday. I don't think this is a step back. The journey is the destination. Plus, the Harley is only a slightly faster than a Super Cub, lol!
I think is so fun cose almost anything with 2 wheels ridden to the limit is fun. I usually ride my bike, but when I use my brother electric “50cc” equivalent scooter it’s hilarious to ride it hard everywhere 😄. The c125 is pretty cool, but had no passenger seat and no luggage. The off road versione of the c125 (don’t remember now the name of the model on top of my head) is one of the best 125 cc thing I think you can buy.
Here in Japan, Honda Super Cubs 50 /125cc bikes are used by Japan Post and newspaper delivery firms. Workhorses and super reliable. Pretty surprised he went on the highway. In Japan, 125cc and below aren't allowed on highways.

"I don't like downshifting" Do you dump your clutch on a traditional moto when you down shift? Here's the key everyone, the Cub has TWO clutches [a hand operated lever is NOT a clutch... the lever is the interface to manipulate a clutch]. One clutch is associated with the throttle, and the other clutch is on the left foot 'shifter'. The shifter does double duty. It acts just like the traditional left hand lever AND it changes your gear. It's not hard to figure out folks.
1st, you treat the gear lever like a clutch pedal in a car. Push down to shift, then release like a clutch pedal. (I've owned one for 3 years) I have a rear rack and an Oxford expandable tail bag. This bike is a great around town errands machine 👌
I've been rocking this motorcycle when I was 16 back in the days, this honda is the best, for people who didn't know, this supercub is semi-auto, the one with clutch is manual and scoots are automatic.
FYI. You said you don't like downshifting. Actually you can downshift and rev match with that thing. Pushing the shift pedal and holding it is like squeezing the clutch lever, so you can do rev matching by pushing and holding the shift pedal down and revving and then releasing the shift pedal so that you're downshift is smooth just like a normal motorcycle with clutch lever.
I rode my 50mph honda scv100 lead on 70mph highways here in the UK for years. You just have to keep an eye on your mirrors and I never had a problem. Also, when someone is coming up on you in your lane a few light pulls of the brake lever(while not actually activating the brake) to flash your brake lights is a good idea.
The seating position of a super cub is exactly like sitting on the shitter minus getting the sleepy legs when you sit on it for too long so I guess massive plus
I had a mate who had a Honda 90 he travelled on it every day to and from work when he worked as a relief Signalman on the Railway here in the U K , never let him down great little bike , I knew a few guys who used them to commute to and from work .😊

I had a '68 Honda Cub (50 CC) as a kid from about age 12 to 15 back in the early 70s. I loved it, and it held up to an incredible amount of abuse. When I went shopping for a scooter-type bike earlier this year it was one of the first things I looked at; decided on a Vespa GTS 300 instead just because of the additional power. Still considering getting one for my wife, though.

The clutch is called centrifugal clutch. To disengage and shift just throttle down so the engine will allow you to shift. The moped is popular in Southeast Asia. I had a Honda Wave 100.

That's a normal shift lever, it's just a heel/toe like some cruisers have, you can completely ignore the rear half of it and just kick up and down on the front half like a normal one lol

The super cub uses the same type of transmission commonly found on underbone motorcycles below 150cc where you are essentially operating the shifter and the clutch at the same time. In US I guess the Super Cub is the only motorcycle that comes with centrifugal clutch but go to certain regions within Europe like Greece, South East Asia, or China and you'll find a whole slew of these motorcycles running around typically produced by Yamaha, Honda, and Suzuki. Kawasaki used to produce these motorcycles as well up until about 7 years ago. Entry level models below 130cc typically top out at 75mph, higher end models might be able to get you up to 90 if you try hard enough

I would definitely use my Dremel Tool with a cutting wheel and cut that back shifter lever OFF! Also, right or wrong I would just use the brakes to slow down and when I am just about to come to a stop I would down shift to first. (Easier on the gears) That is, unless I was down shifting for a hill.
OC. Like others have said, i'd take the Trail 125 so i can sneak through back trails and also throwing a crate on the back to even run to the grocery store to grab a few things would be easier. Currently trying to figure out what bags to get to carry 3 gallons of milk on the back of my Ninaj400 =D

You should come to asia where moped rules the street. And some of em modified it just to drag race. And that cub in Malaysia we call c70 and modified it engine and some put big tyre
I have had this bike for almost a year now I love it. It has got high torque in 1st I've done a couple of small involuntary wheeles when pulling away from lights.

I'm from Cambodia, a SEA country, everyone has rode a semi-bike like the super cup and Honda dream and all the other Japanese bikes, but all our gear shift are front pedal for up and rear pedal for down, are they making a different system for different market? Cuz ever seen I've been riding a bike, just about 10 years ago, all our semi-bike are like that.
It's a normal shifter. You can use the front like a standard motorcycle. Down for lowering gears, up for higher. The heel shifter doesn't change that, it's just common on big cruisers like Harleys and Indians. The box is still standard pattern and he did a bang up job noticing that.

@@jordanjoestar8839 It’s a bit different than most motorcycles. On the super cub neutral is all the way down instead of between 1st and second like most bikes. So it’s neutral, 1,2,3,4 instead of 1, neutral, 2,3,4

My family had an automatic, 70's Honda ST90 (Street and Trail with nobbies) when I was a wee lad. It was a blast.

i also ride a semi-automatic gearbox bike and this is exactly what to do for a smoother up and down-shifting.

I have about 8K miles on mine now and I love it! I saved so much on gas this summer. I take it to the country roads, and regularly keep up with the posers on big bikes in the turns. it's all you need if you don't need to go on the freeway alot.
I bought one of these, and I love this bike! I’ve ridden bigger bikes in the past, but I have more fun on this Super Cub than my previous 900cc bikes I’ve owned. Mpg is amazing! I will never sell this bike.

Seeing you wear full gear on the Cub makes me realize how strange I must look wearing all my Revit gear while riding mine, but ayo I've gone 72mph down 316 and 285 with this thing all the time and I don't' trust half the MF's in ATL. You're pretty bold taking it thru 400, I feel like even my Z06 gets tramped from all the psychos on that road😂
Driving this vehicle over 70 'mericans per hour will definitely turn you into a real angel real fast bruf.
I would definitely consider buying one of these just to commute to work with.
Especially since I don't really have to get in the highway.

It's like hone you're a kid and you wish you could shove a lawnmower engine into your bicycle, this is basically the result.
I have a 2019 Supercub. I live in a small town in the midwest. Everything's within 3 miles. Grocery, restaurants, banks, govt offices, taverns, haircuts...etc...and the speed limit never gets above 35mph. (mostly it's 25) The SC is perfect for this kind of riding. If I want to go out of town, I have a regular motorcycle for that. But I don't want to drag a 500lb motorcycle out to run 2 miles to the grocery store for milk and eggs. In town/city riding, this thing is great. If you need to be above 45mph for extended periods of time, this is not your machine. Do NOT take a SC on the highway. You have NO power to pass or get out of danger.
I just literally purchased one last week, waiting for delivery. Waited 3-6 months for one lol. Fyi, sold the 600rr for this. Was living too fast on that, its time to go slower lol
I had a 1000RR...but the only roads that are good (curvy) going to work are 35mph...and here its a felony to go 30mph over the speed limit....so like you said...time to slow it down...and see the sights.
I bought one 6 months ago and I still love riding it to everywhere. This little bike is amazing.
I actually have one and it always puts a smile on my face and I even get respect from old Harley guys when I pass. I dug the big semi behind you giving you safe passage. What's great about the Cub is stability and it does 50mph all day. Brakes suck.

I grew with this bikes Yamaha town mate and now with Honda supra 100 fully rebuild. This type of motorbikes are the simple, reliable and every day thing to do your job. That's why i love them...
Its called a heel/toe shifter. They have them on cruisers.

To change gears, lower the throttle and step forward to shift to the reverse to downshift
Pretty sure it’s actually the opposite on the super cub and trail 125. Pushing down with your toe shifts down, pushing down with you heel shifts up.
I saw many of these in Japan '84-'87 when I lived there; the fairing part was often white, and it seemed alot of the older folks rode these. I just remember a LOT of scooters there...
After driving the interstates for years with a 150cc I'm sure I would love to drive a Super Cub across the country. I found following Trucks and Suv's I could double my gas mile and turn the throttle down so the engine was never breathing hard.
you can rev match with that type of transmission you just need to keep the shifter depressed for a bit then blip the throttle then release the shifter

Finds out things we've known about since the 70s or earlier (semi auto gearbox). The shifter is identical to all motorcycles. Down for lower, up for higher gears... just paired with the typical cruiser style heel shift. Seems he knows every bell and whistle on most new cutting edge modern bikes, which is ironic to me 😅.
Funny how times change so fast even the old well known things get thrown out the window haha. Love these little things.
In most Asian contries, for example, Vietnam, all semi auto gearbox's shift is inverted (Down for higher gears, up for lower gears), it's a bit weird for me to see a inverted shift pattern in the Cub sold in America :))
@@phammanh2689 I've never heard of a 'step thru' with a gearchange up for up..I've ridden C50 in 1975...C90's in 2000's..ANF125 Innova..110i Wave..all have same direction..down for up..from top gear when stopped down into neutral..down for first..etc..I haven't ridden a conventional gearbox for like 20 years..I'd be confused with the reverse gearing on a cub..
@@markianclark9645 You should come to Vietnam mate, 100% of semi-auto motorcycles (like this Cub 125) are the same shift pattern (down for upshift, up for downshift), only the manual clutch motorcycle have the same shift pattern (one down, the rest is up) :))
I read somewhere that in the rest of the world (non-US), shifting is reverse on the super cub than it is here, which would be more intuitive. Pushing down on the front shifter moves you up a gear, and pushing down on the rear shifter moves you down a gear.

I've had my big twin, Harley Softail for 30 years and I can't wait to pick up my new Super Cub this Saturday. I don't think this is a step back. The journey is the destination. Plus, the Harley is only a slightly faster than a Super Cub, lol!
I think is so fun cose almost anything with 2 wheels ridden to the limit is fun. I usually ride my bike, but when I use my brother electric “50cc” equivalent scooter it’s hilarious to ride it hard everywhere 😄. The c125 is pretty cool, but had no passenger seat and no luggage. The off road versione of the c125 (don’t remember now the name of the model on top of my head) is one of the best 125 cc thing I think you can buy.
Here in Japan, Honda Super Cubs 50 /125cc bikes are used by Japan Post and newspaper delivery firms. Workhorses and super reliable. Pretty surprised he went on the highway. In Japan, 125cc and below aren't allowed on highways.

Do you dump your clutch on a traditional moto when you down shift?
Here's the key everyone, the Cub has TWO clutches [a hand operated lever is NOT a clutch... the lever is the interface to manipulate a clutch].
One clutch is associated with the throttle, and the other clutch is on the left foot 'shifter'.
The shifter does double duty.
It acts just like the traditional left hand lever AND it changes your gear.
It's not hard to figure out folks.
1st, you treat the gear lever like a clutch pedal in a car. Push down to shift, then release like a clutch pedal. (I've owned one for 3 years) I have a rear rack and an Oxford expandable tail bag. This bike is a great around town errands machine 👌
I've been rocking this motorcycle when I was 16 back in the days, this honda is the best, for people who didn't know, this supercub is semi-auto, the one with clutch is manual and scoots are automatic.
FYI. You said you don't like downshifting. Actually you can downshift and rev match with that thing. Pushing the shift pedal and holding it is like squeezing the clutch lever, so you can do rev matching by pushing and holding the shift pedal down and revving and then releasing the shift pedal so that you're downshift is smooth just like a normal motorcycle with clutch lever.
I rode my 50mph honda scv100 lead on 70mph highways here in the UK for years. You just have to keep an eye on your mirrors and I never had a problem. Also, when someone is coming up on you in your lane a few light pulls of the brake lever(while not actually activating the brake) to flash your brake lights is a good idea.
The seating position of a super cub is exactly like sitting on the shitter minus getting the sleepy legs when you sit on it for too long so I guess massive plus

I had a mate who had a Honda 90 he travelled on it every day to and from work when he worked as a relief Signalman on the Railway here in the U K , never let him down great little bike , I knew a few guys who used them to commute to and from work .😊

I had a '68 Honda Cub (50 CC) as a kid from about age 12 to 15 back in the early 70s. I loved it, and it held up to an incredible amount of abuse. When I went shopping for a scooter-type bike earlier this year it was one of the first things I looked at; decided on a Vespa GTS 300 instead just because of the additional power. I grew up owning a Honda Astrea Supra ...so N-1-2-3-4 was kinda common / We had lots of mopeds like this back in Greece, most common were Honda Astrea Supra, Honda Astrea Grand, Yamaha Crypton ...all three were 100cc and then some had the Honda GLX 50cc, 90cc

That's a normal shift lever, it's just a heel/toe like some cruisers have, you can completely ignore the rear half of it and just kick up and down on the front half like a normal one lol

The super cub uses the same type of transmission commonly found on underbone motorcycles below 150cc where you are essentially operating the shifter and the clutch at the same time.
In US I guess the Super Cub is the only motorcycle that comes with centrifugal clutch but go to certain regions within Europe like Greece, South East Asia, or China and you'll find a whole slew of these motorcycles running around typically produced by Yamaha, Honda, and Suzuki. Kawasaki used to produce these motorcycles as well up until about 7 years ago.
Entry level models below 130cc typically top out at 75mph, higher end models might be able to get you up to 90 if you try hard enough

I would definitely use my Dremel Tool with a cutting wheel and cut that back shifter lever OFF! Also, right or wrong I would just use the brakes to slow down and when I am just about to come to a stop I would down shift to first. (Easier on the gears) That is, unless I was down shifting for a hill.

OC. Like others have said, i'd take the Trail 125 so i can sneak through back trails and also throwing a crate on the back to even run to the grocery store to grab a few things would be easier. Currently trying to figure out what bags to get to carry 3 gallons of milk on the back of my Ninaj400 =D
If you've come to the Philippines, Honda released a lot of the same units as the Cub. The Wave 110, Wave 125, Honda Dream, etc. 😁
you can always rev match when downshifting on a motorcycle like this and it's so much better feeling...

I have had this bike for almost a year now I love it. It has got high torque in 1st I've done a couple of small involuntary wheeles when pulling away from lights.

Huh? Shift up with the rear pedal?! I'm from Cambodia, a SEA country, everyone has rode a semi-bike like the super cup and Honda dream and all the other Japanese bikes, but all our gear shift are front pedal for up and rear pedal for down, are they making a different system for different market? Cuz ever seen I've been riding a bike, just about 10 years ago, all our semi-bike are like that.
Simialr here in pak with all teh 70cc and 125cc some bigger [200cc+] are the other one with neutral between 1st and 2nd gear
Same here (fr the US). We had a 70's Honda ST90 and I remembered the same - hitting the back to gear down/hitting the front to gear up.
It's a normal shifter. You can use the front like a standard motorcycle. Down for lowering gears, up for higher. The heel shifter doesn't change that, it's just common on big cruisers like Harleys and Indians. The box is still standard pattern and he did a bang up job noticing that.
