You might want to watch or read about Kareem. He was as introverted as Larry and more intellectual than perhaps any man in the NBA. He grew up and with the emancipation era. His faith and personality kept him distant from a lot of the showtime shenanigans but his skills kept the Lakers in the playoffs for a decade.

One thing mentioned in the Bird ESPN doc is he told the Celtic GM he was retiring. GM said well think about it over the weekend. Bird knew exactly what he was saying and told the GM no I’m retiring now. Bird was due a $4 million bonus if on the roster in a few days. The GM wanted Bird to get the money and Bird said no. If he wasn’t playing he wasn’t taking money.

People did get skinny & die back then … For a long time, people were very worried about getting HIV. It took awhile for it to be understood that you could only get HIV certain ways. And the images of people dying from it were prevalent and devastating. It was a very frightening new phenomenon and people who were infected were avoided.

Larry and Magic ended up with a beautiful friendship. Larry was there for Magic when most of his teammates didn't even call to check on him after they heard. That game the night Bird had talked to Magic and found out he had hiv was so emotional to watch Larry holding back his tears. Then he made that tribute pass and it was beautiful. No one had heard of anyone surviving hiv when Magic was diagnosed with it. Magic did a great deal to raise money and awareness for hiv research and education. He started doing that as soon as he made his retirement announcement.

If you REALLY want to see why Magic was wearing a Celtics jersey under his Lakers jacket you should watch the documentary / video about the night they held (Larry Birds retirement ceremony) in the Boston Garden. They had the ceremony on a night there wasnt even a game and they still packed the Boston Garden with people and standing up besides. After going through part of the ceremony they called magic to the spotlight and out of respect for Larry he had a Celtics jersey on under his Lakers jacket. It was indeed a moment, Magic gave Larry a Lakers jersey on which he wrote "To the greatest basketball player ever, but more important a friend forever" - and he also said "Larry, you said there will be another Larry Bird on day, but Larry there will never ever, EVER be another Larry Bird" - they hugged and shook hands and Magic looked like he was almost in tears. Again, it was a big big moment The Larry retirement ceremony video is a MUST SEE.

Most of that is true, but your wrong about the Celtics shirt. As much as Magic respected Bird (and there's no question about that), respect is not the reason why he wore that jersey. Magic did not have the Laker's stuff on during the trip to the Boston Garden. He just had normal cloths on (Probably with a button-up dress shirt, with the intention of changing into the Lakers stuff for the ceremony once he got there. But in the dressing room he realized that he had not brought a shirt to wear under the jacket. So just being funny, and to give Magic shit, someone from Boston handed him a Celtics shirt. And obviously, not wanting to wear his jacket without a shirt underneath, Magic took it and put it on because he had no other option.
Being the fun loving guy Magic is, I'm sure he was in good spirits about it, but it wasn't a move he had planned out of respect. And again, we all know Magic respected, and still respects Larry tremendously, but that's just not the reason why he wore that Celtics shirt that day.

Those 2 are even more important than we give them credit. They show what true heart and grit can earn. I knew you would get choked up. 1991 we just sat there in the garden and watched Larry hurt . it was like a long drawn out goodbye . My grandfather said it was heartbreaking for him and he was a state cop. That retirement ceremony was so emotional and awesome and and then out comes Magic! I think we were screaming on our feet for like 10 minutes! I'm really glad that you got to see a little bit of what it was like and that you asked the question about when Larry Bird had to say goodbye to the game. @10:00 it’s the competition and desire to win. Bird, Magic, Kobe, Jordan hated losing more than winning. It’s why they played the way they did. They played all phases of the game HARD and there was none of this BS of game management. I think I hate that almost as much as the rule changes favoring offense. 3x Bird played all 82 games. You played unless you were injured. That’s why people love those four so much.

There was a lot going on when magic announced. A bunch of it was that there was still uncertainty about how it could be contracted through sweat or spit possibly. A lot of players didn’t want to be on the court with him. Karl Malone one of em. In fact he came back a few years after 92 when it was determined you couldn’t catch it that way but one game he got cut/scratched and was bleeding while he was playing and that was it because all eyes were on him and he felt it was too much of a distraction to play.

  • @nathanc30

Injuries changed everything. It changed the Celtics team too. 85 and 87 Celtics were banged up from having to go through the Eastern conference yr after yr. Bird at his peak was the better player between the two in my opinion. Post 88 he had to play differently in order to be effective. Bird almost got the scoring title that year just because he wanted too 30ppg with awesome stat line to go with it. Remember bird is the only dude literally that Michael Jordan never ever beat in the playoffs. Not once. No one else can say that. During MJ's 63-point game bird had almost a triple double 36 points 12 rebound 8 assists 1steal, 2 blocks @ 55% and the win. If Bird stayed healthy he would be into five or six rings easily. I even think that if bird was in LA or Houston and Magic was in Boston you would see the opposite result. Bird would have more because the West was always safer and easier for the Lakers. They Cruised through the Western conference. Magic even said the east was that much tougher.

After Magic retired, I read a testimony by a diehard Celtic fan who hated him during his playing years. She said that when she watched how Magic handled himself during the press conference where he announced he was HIV positive, she was filled with respect for him and at that moment became a fan.
25-30 years I was in a bookstore when I saw Larry Bird's autobiography. I began reading the forward which started out, "when I was a player, there was only one man I feared. That was Larry Bird..." The forward was written by Magic.

They couldn’t be more different, but at the same time- the same really. Similar family size, Midwest upbringing, love for their parents, /family and for basketball. Oh, and both had such a desire to compete at the highest level of the game they have been playing since they were kids. Amazing parallels between these two giants of the game. Touching.

Because your in-depth knowledge about Bird was impressive to me, I decided to watch some more of your hoops videos. I'll give you a bit of info that you may not have known about regarding Bird's back. When his back was a chronic problem, for a couple seasons Larry would finish the game, then go back to his home in Brookline (or if on the road, at his hotel room) and get into a full body cast for many hours just to try and minimize the pain. Then when he had to go to practice or another game, he would get ready, then repeat the agonizing process again.
So shortly after Bird retired in 1992, one day he took that full-body cast and brought it out to the woods near his home in French Lick, Indiana, and using a shotgun, blew the cast to bits.

Having these medical treatment options doesn’t mean there are not side effects and/or set backs. For the most part if you are HIV positive you can live. It probably means you can’t play sports at an elite level. A friend of mine who has been HIV positive for 15 years now hasn’t been able to drive. One of the side effects of his blocker meds is epilepsy. The epilepsy is controllable but he cannot change his meds without risking his virus load.

Thing about HIV back then is even in ‘91 it was still thought of as IV drug user or gay disease. I was in college in ‘91 and we watched press conference in the dorm study hall. Remember no internet back then. I thought he was gonna retire cause his knees or something and then he announced. It was hard to believe. And the images of aids patients back then is exactly what Arsenio described: over time get sicker, lose weight, and pass away.

The world almost lost Irving to Magic.
Irving is a good man. He's a faithful, small town guy.
    Magic was just that...magical!
Magic is THE reason we understand that HIV can be controlled. Believe it or not, the relationship between Bird and Magic became absolutely unbreakable when Larry went to spend time with Irving After he found out he had HIV.
Back then, HIV was a death sentence. We'd just lost Freddie Mercury to aids.
This is at a time where during the Olympics, an entire Olympic-sized pool was drained and scrubbed down with bleach because of a terrible accident caused an Olympic diver who had HIV, to bleed into it.
People were SCARED of aids. Anyone that had it became untouchable, as far as anyone knew.
Back then comma it wasn't ignorance on the topic comma AIDS was a relatively new disease.
People literally got skinny and died in roughly three to five years and were given nine years at the most.
Also, it was predominate amongst homosexuals. It never crossed anyone's mind that if a man got AIDS, it was possible that he had gotten it from a woman. Nobody had ever heard such a thing before.
Bird and Irving showed us that all the hyperbole wasn't true.

Something that you need to understand, there wasn't just little information on HIV back then. One of the things that was just plain true then was that an HIV infection *was* a death sentence. The first drug was only approved in 1986 (+and honestly wasn't all that good by itself). HIV would inevitably turn into AIDS and nearly any disease could/would then kill you. Magic retired in 1992, and several other celebrities had already succumbed to it by then - probably most notably the world news that was Freddy Mercury's death in November 1991.
Magic chose to retire (though there was a LOT of pressure on him to) but as you could probably make out from the documentary, he regretted doing so, possibly more so after Barcelona. He toured the world with all-star teams made up of former college/NBA players for a while, and even returned for a brief stint with the Lakers in 1996.

As a 44 year old that lived through this era, In my humble opinion on the question of who saved the NBA. I feel Larry and Magic where a BIG piece, but it was a puzzle. In the early and mid 80's as ESPN grew and The Big East grew. College basketball and The NCAA where much bigger then the NBA. It was a different time the top HS players went to college and stayed 3 or 4 years. People didnt have 400 channels and 45 games where not on a night. On Saturday afternoon when CBS would have a college game, it was a big deal and must see. Magic and Larry, in my opinion got The NBA on very solid foundation, The success of the NCAA at the time set a system where stars where already made in college. The next wave of stars is what elevated The NBA, clearly Jordan was out front, but Ewing, Wilkins, Barkley, Stockton, Malone. The rise of the NBA from 79(Magic vs Bird in NCAA) to 98(Jordans last Title) will never be seen again.
Side note in regards to the Lakers, yes I know James Worthy was great and is a HOF, but The Lakers drafted Worthy of Domique Wilkins. Imagine Dominique in that Showtime offense with Magic.

I think if a star player had HIV today, because of what has been learned, that player would be able to keep playing. To help put into perspective Bird's desire to compete and his love of the game = this is from Peter May's book titled "The Big Three" pages 266-267 from Bird himself = "A lot of games I played where I couldn't feel my feet.I knew it was stupid, but I had to do it. I knew I did not have many years left and I had to try and push through it. It's tough. You're laying on the floor for 8 days at a time. And not even moving. Eating all your meals on the floor like a dog. You look back, sure it's stupid. But at the time I'm glad I did it, because I wanted to play basketball." Wow, I think that is incredible!!!!

You see in some of the clips of Larry Bird (and others) playing with blood on his jersey. You don't see that now. Player gets popped in the nose or a scraped knee, bleeds a little, everything stops. It gets cleaned off the floor. The player goes to the locker room to get it stopped and get a fresh shirt. No one plays with blood. That's because of Magic Johnson. Those were the things that had to change to allow him to play in the Olympics and they are still the standard. Changed overnight.

Magic was getting ...) It seemed almost a fact, HIV was a death sentence at the time and that's why Bird was so shook while comparing it to his father's death. What happened between Magic and Isiah was mainly because of ignorance from the latter. People just didn't know any better back then. AIDS was known as the gays' illness, so whoever got it, must've been in the closet and would wither away and die shortly after. That's how it was seen back then. That was another reason on why Magic retired, it just wasn't clear wether playing with someone who had it, coming into contact with their sweat, brought the risk of infection.
They did make up eventually, though, and they have a beautiful 1-on-1 interview where they talk it out.

I think even today a person with HIV is a risk in a sports arena bcuz athletes do get scraped up or banged up & bleed…or sweat. And even though meds can help keep the viral load under control better than they used to, you never know at what point your body might not react to the meds like it used to due to other unknown stressors….& in those types of situations you have to think of the whole team not just the infected individual.
