  • Under the direction of the U.S. American bassist John Clayton, the WDR BIG BAND performs the title "Squatty Roo" (composer: Jonny Hodges, arrangement: John Clayton). Solos are played by Johan Hörlén and Karolina Strassmayer on alto saxophone, Ludwig Nuss on trombone, Ruud Breuls and John Marshall on trumpet, Frank Chastenier on piano and John Goldsby with John Clayton on double bass. Produced during the dress rehearsal for the concert "John Clayton - Personal Selection" at WDR Studio 4 / Cologne (April 2016.
With the concert "Personal Selection" bassist, John Clayton, born in 1952, gives insight into his decades of work as a composer and musician. At 16, he took lessons with bass legend Ray Brown and is also a respected music educator in his own right. His collaborations with the WDR BIG BAND span decades. Clayton's music is closely related to traditional jazz. Nevertheless, he manages to create new musical facets and colors with his means of expression, thus enriching the current big band literature.
