This is the perspective my buddies must have had when I took the InCross120 "quick" descent. Took well over 10mins and quite some drift under my way too large reserve till arrival at the ground. I pulled the reserve at cloud base after a nasty wing collapse and didn't even try to undo the mess. Maybe I should have given it at least a few attempts. 😅
If not cascading into a spiral, and there is plenty of altitude, why not to attempt to fix it? Spirals can be deadly at any altitude, so throw early if there is no quick exit.
@@SkyMaxOne It was my first big and sudden collapse. Before realizing what happened 3/4 of the wing crumbled. No direct spiral but I got scared and panicked. Today I would handle it more focused and most of all, I won't scream like a hysterical teenager before the reserve was out and open! 🙄 It all happened slightly below 4000m in the Alps, so I had somewhat around 2300 to go. Under a reserve which could have carried 1.5 x my weight. The InCross100 had been a solid fit already.
You gain confidence pretty quick, you feel yourself being pulled up when you launch. I started paragliding and paramotoring 3 years ago to overcome a fear of heights.
Paragliders are not designed to open at velocity. We launch off a mountain and use ridge lift and thermals to go up. In thermal lift you can climb all the way to the cloudbase
If the cloud base is high enough you can fly up to the air space limit at your location. In same areas this is beyond 4000 m. Or over 3000 m above the ground. In the summer most strong thermals reach from ground all the way up to the clouds. If you are lucky you can get one at 400 m and 7 minutes later you are at 3000 m.
at 0:03 before it disappears behind your glider it's turning tight left, possibly left spin, when it re-appears it's turning right with a right side cravatte. wtf happened....
@@billS-c3nI understand the fact pilot a cameraman was climbing whilst old mate pilot b was descending, however, when they were in close proximity of one another you can see how fast he’s dropping out of the sky in that moment which won’t kill him, but definitely fvck pilot a for sure landing like that

The inflatable wing concept certainly "looks cool and convenient"; however it ultimately turns out to be a very risky endeavor. Know that paragliding requires one fourth the skill and four times the judgement of hang gliding. The lack of an airframe means that a paraglider offers zero crash protection during an accident.
It's not like safety record of hang gliding is any better than paragliding. Different aircrafts, different issues. It all comes down to the pilot and training.
What a beast of a thermal! Kinda looks like he's still climbing under reserve
He is not. Landed fine
@@SkyMaxOnefor a moment He was going up under the reserve indeed.
Phew! A long way to sit and think about your sins! 😅 Hope the landing was ok.
Everything was ok
honestly thought you were going to tell him that he can't park there.
🤔
😂
How bizarre... Hope he landed ok and nothing was damaged 😮
Seems like he had a lot of time to try and fix that. But I guess I wasn't there in his harness.
It seems that way. It looked like a spin, so no high g. But, I wasn't there in that harness either. Better safe than sorry.
Cool square reserve chute, I first flew Chelan 1975, then spent the next 30 years flying here, darn dangle divers!

And that right there is why I would never suspend myself 1000s of feet from a grocery bag on strings. Lol
Well, reserve parachute worked just fine.

At this altitude, he can try to re-open his wing and fold his reserve. Maybe enough time to drink a good black coffee.
Better safe than sorry.
Must have been serious to deploy so high. Stability looks awesome on these new gen reserves.
Looks very high. Which altitide was it?
2500m or higher
What glider was that who had the collapse?
No idea
It's a gin glider maybe a boomrang12 (i'm guessing by the view at 1:10 could be wrong)

Where was this? Chelan ?
Yes. US Paragliding Open 2023
Hey Dude!
😂
SkyMax, nice video....I'd like to know what are your sunglasses with that nice nose protector tough...
It's my friend in the video, so I don't know. But I bet it's a separate nose piece you can attach to any glasses
New to paragliding here. How did you all get so high up? Did you jump from a plane or are thermals really that powerful in certain areas?

I know as much as you do. I haven't spoken to the pilot. Obviously couldn't recover from the spin and opted to throw early. Better safe than sorry.
a bit scary to think of the higher ups falling through the gaggle..
It was in the middle of course, so no tight packed gaggles. But yes, I've seen videos of a midair caused by a spinning glider in a gaggle.
That’s my friend! 😯
Omg reading the comments and watching this I’m dying laughing! Glad he was good!
Yup. All is well that ends well. That's what reserves are for
He has the time to reopen the wing, but i think he's got so scared to think as he had
Probably. Better safe than sorry. If in doubt - toss it out.
He could even landed at the goal with that height 😂
Heh 😅
Sounds like a 6m/s thermal
Sounds like it
looong way down
That’s why I still use a big boy reserve, that decent rate was fast as shit!
Hope he landed okay
Yes, he landed fine. Also the camera is going up making decent rate feel higher.
the vario tells you why he looks like he's going down fast. That is one sweet core.
