It was the first time we experienced full blown Messi-mania. All football fans have that effervescent optimism as the new season approaches - sometimes it’s a victory of faith and optimism over realism. However, the Barca faithful had suffered Madrid’s dominance so long that the emergence of this young genius - at a time when Rijkaard, Ronaldinho and Eto’o had brought the good times back - electrified Camp Nou. Nearly 100,000 Catalans roared in exultation of Prince Leo. They were desperate to see how he’d perform against Fabio Cannavaro, Patrick Vieira, Giorgio Chiellini, Mauro Camoranesi, Alessandro Del Piero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Juventus controlled 62 per cent of possession in the first half - at Camp Nou - and led for over an hour. However, Messi just kept on taking the fight to Juve, skipping past tackles, drawing defenders to him before releasing a pass - he was head and shoulders above everyone else on the pitch, particularly when one slalom dribble left both Cannavaro and Gianluca Pessotto sprawling on the ground. The crowd went absolutely wild. ‘Messi-Messsssi-Meeeesssssi’ chants rained down from on high. It seemed like a line had been drawn between Messi the promising youth team player and his new position as a superstar. He supplied the goal assist for Andres Iniesta, a wonderful, defence-splitting 35-metre pass, to cap a landmark performance. Rijkaard allowed him the hero’s departure, in the 90th minute, so that he could take the applause of the crowd. It was a lung bursting standing ovation for the 18 year-old. Post-match, Juventus formally asked Barcelona to name a price for the player, but were instantly rebuffed. President Joan Laporta knew a good thing when he saw it. Backstage, Fabio Capello was left with no doubt about Messi's potential. “In my entire life I have never seen a player of such quality and personality at such a young age, particularly wearing the ‘heavy’ shirt of one of the world’s great clubs. “That guy can do whatever he wants with the ball. Barca are going through a funny patch once again in the league there not taking the chances to overtake RM n in the CL at home we've battered Man city (4-0), PSG (6-1) but away we are losing consistently Man City (3-1), PSG (4-0) n now Juv (3-0) not including results from la liga.

Back then football was much more aggeressive than now. It was a very physical era and they used to make a lot of fouls.
This video doesn't show Messi introducing himself to the world at all, it was just a hard game and he got kicked around a lot. Messi introduced himself when he rose to score the header against Man Utd in the Champions League Final. That was his HELLO to the world outside of football moment. "HELLO World, I am Messi, I am the best, I will continue to be the best until I decide to retire."
Then you began to watch football a little too late... Messi announced himself to the World with Getafe goal... that year he was runner up to Kaka in the Fifa Player of the Year award... he was again runner up but this time to Cristiano... both years he was top but award went to the Champions League winner... even though Kaka was undisputed best during his player of the year season...

I have watched most of the attacking legends in my time, the amazing Brazil of 1970, the occasional magic of George Best, through Cryff, Bettega, Rossi, Zico, Blochin, Gullit, Prof. M. Platini, Baresi, Maradona, Robbie, Ronaldo, Ronaldo C. all of them. And that is what Lionel Messi is, all of them. The Greatest Of All Time. Apart from one player. His name is Chris.
When Chris moved to our village, the under 14 side was struggling. We were in a league with older boys at a time when it mattered, and we were crap. A bad combination. We could just scrape together a side most weeks, and frequently trudged off the field having been taken for double figures. We could do nothing right. Then a new boy moved into the street. He said he'd played for Staffordshire and had had a trial for Walsall. And it was their loss and our gain. Our age, he seemed twice our size. His skills were awesome. We still lost, one man could never win the sort of games we played, against the big council estates in town, where they could pick from hundreds. The best team of 14-year olds was very good indeed, they could beat the blokes, sometimes. But now we had somebody to be proud of, one of the best players in the league.
I shall never forget two games. One, in which we finally overcame the neighbouring village, in the first game we ever won. Chris was there for us, working tirelessly, as we all did that night, his winning goal volleyed home from a rebound off the bar. When the whistle went, it felt like we had won the World Cup. But then, against much stronger opposition, we were 6-0 down, something inside Chris finally snapped. Taking the ball at the edge of the box, on the left, he beat three defenders. He then beat them all again, on the way back out of the box. And then again, as he moved the ball to the middle of the box. Others joined in. None were able to dispossess him of the ball or even predict his moves enough to chop him down. It seemed like he was just toying with them. It probably wasn't for so long, but it seemed an eternity, back and forth, moving the ball among them and emerging with it still glued to his feet.
Moving back out to the left, taking the ball a little wider, to where he could see about half the width of the goal, from about 30 yards, he turned, and fired a shot into the top right hand corner of the net. Like many of the finest shots on goal, it was struck firmly, but its accuracy was what defeated the keeper, as it looped far out of his reach in that perfect trajectory some of the above mentioned are able to achieve from a free kick.
He had told us he found it hard to play his best, which was a polite way of saying he had nobody to play with. What he had done was not, he knew, good football, to do it all by yourself like that. But we knew he was that good, it was the older folk I think he was getting at.
Football is a game that must be played repeatedly at the highest level, if a person is to succeed, and unfortunately the community was a close one, and the local school team a closed shop. They didn't really like strangers round these parts. Poor Chris's football career ended when he left his friends and team mates, up in the midlands, very sad. But he will always be my greatest football hero.
