I seriously think Messi has the ability to remember PRECISELY how he is lined up with the goal in relation to where he is on the field. He focuses on outmaneuvering his opponents with his above fantastic footwork and then fires at his target. He doesn't look up because he knows which direction he's facing at all times. A player even a little bit close to his level needs an elephant's mind to be able to process all that and use it in a split second.
