This is from experimentation and years of experience but yes having a degree helps however what you also need is the passion for it which drives your need to be better with each project.

Almost everything looks really good, however the shading and color on most of the fire detracts from the rest of the reel. You want to avoid areas with that flat yellow/orange color as you lose all the detail from the simulation. The fire in the explosion at 2:10 and 2:40 looks much better.
