    Oh my gosh!! I have NEVER seen someone perfectly emulate all the ways I sit when I'm working!! Sitting is SO uncomfortable, I hate it!!! Grateful for the tips though!

    You know you’re hypermobile when...
    That position with your foot up on the desk looks SO comfortable, LOL! Can’t believe I never arrived at that one in all my contortions.

    Wow, I never realised that sitting wasn't supposed to be uncomfortable :O
    I always do the "tucking" the leg under, especially at work but I'm worried it will hurt my knee long-term
    I can't wait to put all of this into practice!

    It’s so encouraging to watch this, i find it so hard to sit and I’ll definitely give this a go! I constantly sit with my knee up against my chest (or both!) and have never understood why no one else sits like that!

    Subscribed!!! This explains the unusual sitting behaviors my daughter and I have had for many years! I recently saw a rheumatologist where he explained to me that I had Hypermobility syndrome. This nearly explains all my unanswered questions why I was this way that others did not struggle with! Thanks for this video. My daughter and I will watch it together again. I'm also super happy to see so many of the viewers supporting each others comments!!

    My whole life I've pulled one or two of my legs forward when seated bc I was/am SO uncomfortable otherwise, I can't stay in one position and it makes me lose my focus. The tilting forward of the hip is something I will work on. Thank you!. I've always felt pulling my body all the way into the desk was the most comfortable (even if it was for a short period). LOVE your video and will watch the rest! My family and friends to this day have NO clue what I go through on a daily basis...the youtube community makes me feel like I'm not insane. :-D

    I'm constantly shifting about when i'm sitting. Never stay in one position for long. And that shoulder thing...that explains what is happening when I'm carrying groceries! I knew something was going on but i wasn't sure what or how to explain it but to say the shoulder was drooping!

    Omg... the weird chair sitting is entirely me. Even the foot on the table thing! I’ve only recently been told I have a hypermobile spine but these signs have been going on for years!
    For some reason those positions were just more comfortable than sitting properly, no matter how odd looking it was (or whether my mom got upset with me for hugging a knee at the dinner table)!
    I will try to use these tips!

    • @meganb4432

    That one foot up on the desk position ...like looking in a mirror! I have realised recently that sleeping that way with one knee up in my face and the other leg dead straight with pointed toes (....so comfy!!!) is why my hips have been screaming at me for months. It's been my go-to position for as long as I can remember, and it still feels good, but if I do it now I am in so much pain the next day.
    Could you do a video on safe sleeping positions? That would be great.
    Also, can you recommend any workout videos that are safe for hypermobility? All the ones I've found are more informative with lots of long explanations, rather than get-right-into-it workouts you can watch over & over for a daily workout.
    Cheers.

      @andreawallenberger2668 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do this too!! LOL Seriously lately I literally consciously make myself straighten the "up" leg to more parallel and go back to sleep. I think/feel it's my pt practice that is starting to make parallel-ish more "comfortable" (maybe?)

  • @angieotten6825
    @angieotten6825 6 ปีที่แล้ว +84

    This is great and I'll definitely try these positions but there is something you are missing with the feet-up thing that my cardiovascular/ POTS specialist pointed out - he believes nearly all his hypermobile patients will also put their legs up naturally when seated to subconsciously try and stabilise blood pressure... Hypermobile patients often have low blood pressure/ unstable blood pressure problems/ POTS and sitting for long periods obviously makes this worse. If legs are up then less effort for that blood to get the the brain. That's how he explained it to me anyway. I wonder if being in the position you suggest but with legs up on a stool in front might be good?

      Angie Fink Or check out those zero gravity chairs/desks. And the sukasana chair. These solutions are expensive tho of course.
      I had a physio tell me not to sit cross legged. No way I could not though. On steroids for things now but that doesn’t fix the hyper mobility lol. Ugh, painful for sure. Cheers.

    Wow, was just diagnosed with hEDS. Have been wearing a back brace almost daily for 10 years. It helps a little, but sitting or standing for long periods of time has been causing excruciating pain and now at least I know why! People thinking you're crazy and also not getting diagnosed for years is one of the worst parts of this crap.

    When you put your leg up on the desk I felt so seen! 😂
    I used to get some looks in the office doing that
    I found crossing a leg up on the desk worked wonders, so a leg is posted on the ground and the other is laying flat along the width of the desk, I then rest my elbows on my leg when im getting stuck in to some coding 😂

    This video is so helpful - I sit all these funny ways and even have a little friction spot on each ankle from when I sit all twisty-turny - as far as diagnoses, a doctor was able to attribute it to my sitting position, alongside knee problems from pretzeling up so tight, but I'm only discovering that hypermobility is a real thing!

    No one ever asks this on hypermobility channels but................... how about a video on positions during sex to avoid hip subluxations, hand pain from repetitive movement, etc? It wouldn't get monetised, that's for sure...but you'd make for some quality of life improvements for some folk!

      Personally, swapping positions more often, finding chairs, different pillows, etc. for support helps a lot! My wrists are particularly bad so I often wear braces, some like them for ankles and knees. I found that toys help a lot as they do most of the work and I just have to hold it in the right spots, I've even heard s*x swings are helpful since they take pressure off most of the joints but isn't always an option for some people. I get bad hip pain and missionary is the worst on it, so doggy/cowgirl is more comfortable.

    The sliding forward, the pain in the big muscles, and the shoulder pain - wow! I didn't know you could sit in a chair without the constant shuffling back to stay in the seat. I have been using the occy health advice for years and wondering why it didn't help the pain. Thank you for this - I've managed to stay in the same position in the seat for longer than I ever have before just by taking your advice. One question - I have a laptop and sit it on a support to stop it overheating which means I can't lay my hands flat, any advice please?

    I find it comfortable when I'm driving my car to plant my left foot on the seat in front of me, with my knee pulled up to my chest. I will probably be the first ever death by hypermobility (I'm in the u.s. so the left side is closer to the door and my right side is closer to the centerline of the car).
    No clue this was a hypermobility thing.
    Also, at work we had only backless stools (torture. Absolute torture) and I'd always sit on my left foot. I had to stop doing this when I realized the pain in my lower back/backside of hips that I had been feeling for 3.5 months was a subluxated iliosacral joint 😑.
    I feel validated when I see hypeobility videos like this and the posture patterns are exactly the same as my own posture patterns that I've had for decades if not my whole life. Validated but then also angry. Angry at every doctor who brushed off my pain complaints saying I was too young to have anything wrong. Brushing it off to anxiety. Never once considering hey maybe her joints hyperextend and the pains she has everywhere are actually real. Not ONCE. It makes me so angry because my life could have been much more full if I had learned how to manage this earlier. I might not even have as much and as severe joint pain as I do now if I had known and got some physical therapy to help prevent damage.

    What would you recommend for people who are doing art work on a tablet. I often find myself hunching over quite dramatically.
    I’m not quite sure how to raise my iPad up so I can draw on it comftably without curling my right arm in significantly.

    *facepalm* i didnt realize sliding off the chair was a hypermobility thing.... i usually keep both my knees up and use my shins to pin myself into the chair against the table/desk

    This is helpful, but immediately causes pain on my butt joints. On the left side in particular I have old swelling at the top of my femur and so sitting properly immediately hurts that area that never really healed after initial injury. What would you suggest if those butt joints have chronic pain?

    >Be me, watching this video while sitting on the back of my hips with right leg tucked and leaning against the armrest, left leg propped on the right side of my desk, right arm looped under in pretzel mode.

    Is this why I always sit with my feet in my chair? I can't sit straight otherwise

    In school I would always want to sit behind the desk that had a basket or bar under the chair so I could lay my feet on top lol

    I really struggle with sitting correctly, not least because i find it hard to know where my body is in space. I'm in pain most days at work, despite having had adaptions made to my desk and chair 😢

    Hello! :) I know this is an old video, but I am struggling hard with this right now and on the path to a new chair and desk, and I absolutely want to try this out! :) I like to play computer games with a keyboard and mouse, is there a specific way you would recommend for KB and mouse placement? Thank you!!

    Is that lying back position supportive for cervical spine?

    • @TheBalletBlog-LisaHowell
      @TheBalletBlog-LisaHowell ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      Thank you for your question.
      This position can encourage you to use your deep neck flexors to stabilise your cervical spine. If you have an unstable neck, it is best to use a high backed chair!

    What about the knee position when you're seated at the desk? is 90 degree angle not good? I find with my hypermobile knees, sitting tends to aggravate it so I try to stretch but I cant do that if Im seated at a desk.

    You have no arms on your chair. After years of upper back agony, I finally found that having support for my arms is critical. I cannot sit in an armless chair for more than a short time. In an ergonomic chair with adjustable arms, I’m fine.
