I have always been very nostalgic especially when it comes to rock and roll. This series is gold. So well researched. Great job Billy. Two places I always think about when I think of early rock and roll are the Brill building in New York and of coarse Laurel Canyon. It must have been a blast. So much talent living next to each other. Carole King was prominent in both places. Coast to coast and world wide. Kenny Sowers

I just love these videos you’re doing especially of Laurel Canyon. I spent about a month in California a few years ago and Laurel Canyon was my absolute favorite place in the LA area as I was walking through and up Lookout mountain and going into the canyon country store and seeing Jim and Pam‘s house on Love Street I could just feel the ghost of all of themright there and then. Thanks for doing this so beautiful there.❤🙏
Ok Billy, what can I say about this one? The Carole King house!!!!! Iconic! Tapestry is one of my fav albums of ALL TIME and it was so cool to see this house up close and personal. The stories it could tell! Loved the part about the cat too. Thanks again for all the cool stories. 😀
Awesome video.....thanks !! PS: Around 1984ish I was in Vegas and attended the opening night of The NEW Mamas and the Papas at The Sands Hotel. John, Denny, McKenzie Phillips and Elaine McFarlane (took Cass' place, she was from the pop group Spanky and Our Gang). The table I had was next to a table where Michelle Phillips sat with some friends. Also John was on probation for his drug bust and McKenzie Phillips had just been fired from the TV show "One Day at a Time" for cocaine use. One last thing, Scott McKenzie was in the band and sang his hit (written by John Phillips) "Are you going to SAN FRANCISCO. Ticket was I think, maybe $25 and a $20 tip got me a table in the front row, next to Michelle's table. WHAT A NIGHT...it was by luck I was walking by The Sands that day and got tickets.
What a night indeed! Only an extra 20 bucks to sit near Michelle. Probably would have embarrassed myself doing the fawning fanboy thing. 'Spanky' was the best possible replacement for the irreplaceable Cass, I thought.
love these HOLLYWOOD HILLS documentaries. they are a walk down memory lane. i went to ucla and lived in hollywood. and venice for 10 years in the 70's. i am waiting for you to do one on venice beach! drove through these hill streets on a regular basis going to lunches, parties or the valley. ANAIS NIN lived in the hills there too. thank you so much for the details!
That was nifty detective work about Carole's cat! Who would have thought to contradict the actual photographer? This earth-shattering mystery is finally solved, ha ha. Thanks, Billy Columbo. It's quirky stuff like this that helps to makes this series so endearing, along with the solid research. Looking up the provenance of existing houses to determine exactly where Jim Morrison was standing and what he would have been looking at when he wrote 'People are strange'? OMG, the things I didn't know I needed to know! Btw, the instrumental version surprised me with how pretty and beguiling the melody is without Jim's typically strong lyrics.
Thanks for noticing all that, and especially the music. We really had some fun with all of these instrumental versions. Yes, Carole's cat Telemacus. He ended up being in one of the most famous and iconic album covers of all time, bless his little heart. He probably didn't even care. :)
i spent last two days tending to sore throat, head cold, and i want to thank u billy for this compilation...you have done a great job, loved every minute of it, stellar, thank u
Great video, I love how this basically ended up being a tribute to Carole. My parents were her age and had Tapestry. I was mesmerized by the album cover as a kid. I heard I Feel The Earth Move on the radio today. Coincidence? 🤨 Thanks friend 🌞🌷
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you so much for your very kind comments. Carole is a treasure and one of the greatest American songwriters we've ever known here. I bought that album for my wife way back when we first got married. She was impressed with that!
@@memoryfield You're so welcome 🤗. Carole's music is timeless, even if she's singing about something sad you still are left feeling something good. Glad your wife approved 😊
Chynna Phillips Baldwin is still in recovery from the drug-fueled chaos of her upbringing at the hands of Papa John, and possibly Michelle. Sounds like things were just as bad as far as the relationships she was exposed to. The idea of total personal freedom is romantic and tantalizing, but the reality of it is disastrous for children and other vulnerable people left in the wake of that kind of lifestyle. Children need stability, and stability imposes limits on parents’ lifestyles.
Wonderful documentaries, thank you! As a Boomer so young back then … seeing and hearing all this now, especially Carole King brought up some deep old emotions from that time … thank you for showing the back stories to these amazing artists whose music defined my 20 something life … can’t wait to find Joni … as she did the most for me.
Thank you for these! I'm busy binge-watching my way through them. Your research and recording skills are to be applauded too. It's a very well balanced and well made series, such a joy to watch. Much respect 🙏
Windows and doorways are racking due to shifting foundations. This is like the Oakland hills in Alameda county. Shacks built of STEEP hillsides. If there is a plot of land people will build a house on it just to live up in the hills. You think about wild fires and earthquakes. They are finally cutting back trees and brush to make things easier. The high peaked roofs that resemble "faerie" houses resemble the ones demolished near Olivenhain and Leucadia.
Thanks for trip down memory lane. I was in my teens in the 60's. and just graduating high school. I still have the Doors album as well as Carol King and also Mamas and Papas album. The Beatles who were also huge, at the time,, were sadly on their way out in the late 60's. Was Interesting seeing the houses where all those iconic groups hung out.. Loved it.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for sharing your comments. I think The Beatles, and all those others you mentioned, will be remembered for a very long time after we're all gone!
Thank you so much for connecting the dots and bringing this extraordinarily rich history of Laurel Canyon alive. I spent a lot of time in and around that area in the late 70s- early 80s pursuing my own musical passion but never knew even a tiny fraction of the details presented in this series. I gotta say, Michelle Phillips was/is an absolute stunner and I suspect if she batted her lashes at any red blooded male in their 20s it would be really tough to say no and walk away. That level of attraction is both a blessing and a curse, and was at the center of much of The Mammas & the Pappas turmoil. We are fortunate to have the great songs they produced during their time together as a band. Cheers!
Absorbed in your series but had to jump out just to say that Mary Aster wasn't a silent film star. She was the female lead in The Maltese Falcon! A liberated woman was Mary. Made a lot of men hide when her diary became public. Great fun.
I think maybe we're both right. Mary Astor started out in silent films as a teenager in the 20's but when "talking" films came out she almost lost her career because it turned out she had a deep, somewhat masculine voice and that was not fashionable for a woman in those times. Thanks for watching!
I just found this series and can't stop watching it! Your voice, stories and descriptions are wonderful! Such a high quality production! Looking forward to all your videos from you and your team! Fascinating Musical History! Love it!💕Thank you!
Thank so much for your stories. It make me look back on my life back.I am 71years old now .I never live in LC.But it brings me back to the great fun I had.Parties and weed lots of that. You tell it so fine and true too.
I can't explain the feeling I got one night while i was driving on a LA free way and the DJ on the radio said something electrical about Jim and thean played LA woman. I was 25 and a small town boy from Virginia and I had to pull over and regroup. Life is so short that seems like last week. And it was August of 91.my first wife was back home pregnant with my daughter in Virginia.
I'm friends with a person who was in that scene, a musician in a band at that time in L.A. and he lived on Lookout Mtn. 65-67. He doesn't talk much about it.
Super Billy! Have always wanted to know the Carole King story, personal to me. In such a crazy industry/time she was a rare one to keep her feet on the ground. Real musician, didn't she later mentor lots of other artists, she was like a mother of other musicians. Such a famous canyon!
This is so memorable the Hollywood hills area . I worked at Hollywood and La Brea in 1979 by the hungry tiger restaurant and I used to stop by piece o pizza 🍕. Had a piece lately . I worked at Holiday Spa 7080 Hollywood Blvd
@@memoryfield I was a touch too young for really knowing what was going on. In Laurel Cyn. I was a W. LA schooler & absolutely loved Cyn. Ladies. I actually feel blessed to not be on the middle of the whirlwind. Of course as a high schooler we knew the gruesome Manson details but it didn't seem to much phase myself or classroom buddies, perhaps we had enough with the Kennedy assassinations. But all the music history you bring out is quite good and appreciated.
"People are Strange", probably one of the most brilliant, insightful, songs of all time, soft and uncritical. Let's face it, we all have a deep, hidden side to ourselves, which we don't share with anyone.
Your videos are the business! Great presentation, social history, knowledge, opinion, fact... I always say that the 60's is the greatest era/decade of music. Yet I listen to far, far less than I realised. You've inspired me to get searching for all the artists you mention. Again... Many, Many thanks!
Love to hear things such as that. And yes, you really can't beat the late 60's for the greatest music ever made. So much rich history and crazy stories! Thanks, David, for watching and for commenting. :)
@@memoryfield Can't stop listening to The Doors at present! Society does not put anywhere near enough emphasis on its Social History; and you have managed to do this in a heartbeat.
It's surprising that some of the songs I listen to by groups/singers were only made, originally by groups from a few years previous. Love Status Quo and their version of Roadhouse Blues. Now... anyone can be forgiven for thinking it is a decades old number but... The Doors! Enough said.
In ‘98’ I was working in Sherman Oaks & was given a somewhat tour of all these areas…but just quickly driving through & no details…I never realized until now where exactly I was, I just figured it was a cool place with cool houses in the hills. We did see a very young Brad Pitt roaming around though...at least that’s what they told me & I had no clue who that was at the time. Now I realize why we were driving around there…showing me where all the famous people lived. I’m from Michigan, far from LA.
Great story. For some reason, that canyon has been attracting Hollywood film stars and musicians since basically they put an actual road in there. It used to also be a more affordable place to live at a certain point in the 60's and so the young musical community began moving in before many of them became famous and wealthy.
Another great video Billy, thanks for sharing all of this, I would love to visit the area one day. The stories you pick out are brilliant. Can't wait for episode 6! Cheers
Mark, so glad you enjoyed it! Hope you can get over there soon, it's really an interesting and beautiful place. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comments! :)

I had the awesome experience of working in LA,Hollywood and surrounding areas for about 2 months a few years ago as a telephone lineman. Sometimes even to this day I can’t believe this actually happened it was just a surreal experience. One particular day I was driving around, most of the time not even knowing where I was and boom there was the Hollywood Bowl. Amazing
@@memoryfield it really is but the good part was my hotel was in Torrance so if my last job was in the Hollywood hills and it took me 2 hours to get back it was all free OT the crazy part of traffic was they allowed motorcycles to drive in between cars on the freeway

@@memoryfield Those were the folks that believed the spin done down in LA but believed their brand didn't sell out. I too just discovered the roots of movement. John Kay (Steppenwolf) lived in Nichols Canyon, adjacent to Laurel Canyon and just down the road from Frank Zappa, from 1969 to 89. John's daughter Shawn was friends with Frank's kids Moon & Dweezil. The cover photo for Steppenwolf's third album, "At Your Birthday Party", of the band sitting at a kitchen table of a burned out, house was taken in Laurel Canyon at the burned out, house of Canned Heat's, Bob Hite.
Yeah, I've seen that album cover and that has to be the one that was right next door to the Joni Mitchell house. She said in an interview once that the house next door burned down and was very close to hers and yet her house didn't burn. That's when she became convinced that her house on Lookout Mountain was "protected" by some higher power.
@@memoryfield Joni Mitchell lived next door to Bob 'The Bear' Hite! To say he was a party animal would be an understatement. I wonder if he was a good neighbor? Henry Diltz did the photo shoot for that Steppenwolf album and made mention of Joni Mitchell being there that day as well.
Great series, so entertaining and informative, I was 6 years old in 1968, when the better part of all this great music was being created, but I had older siblings that were into all this and had a ton of albums that would play in my house around the clock. This just came across my feed and I watched it on my TV. So interesting! I really enjoyed it. I subscribed and am looking forward to watching all videos on this channel. Thanks!
Awesome! Thank you! Make sure you use the Playlist function and it will keep them all in order.
The view is spectacular, but those houses hugging the hills are a scary site to me knowing about the mudslides that happen.
Yeah, I know, right? Some of those houses up on stilts at the tops of these hills, too. One big earthquake...
Agree. They seem to have no yards and seemed perched on mountains, waiting for the next quake
Doesn't rain much
I have always been very nostalgic especially when it comes to rock and roll.
I've to LA several times, but never managed to get to Laurel Canyon. Thanks so much for this. I have a fantasy of driving up there in a convertible with LA Woman blasting on the speakers. RIP Jim.
That was fantastic. I was completely captivated. 👍🇬🇧
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching. :)
I grew up in the 60s while all this was happening. I've learned a lot I didn't know on this little series. Thank you.
You're very welcome. I loved making these videos!
it seems odd that they have a pic of them all in a bath tub. did mama cass die in a bath tub in the same hotel room kieth moon died. if you live in the area you may be interested in dave mcowans book and e-book wierd scenes inside the canyon
Yes me too. We had no way of knowing these type details Because media was VERY different back then. ( there were fan magazines, but they were frowned upon by real fans.
Very cool Billy, thanks!
Watching these videos from a freezing U.K. They certainly transport you to another time and place in music history. Very uplifting, informative and totally addictive. Thank you. When I reach the last one I will probably go right back to the beginning again.
Awesome. Glad to hear that! Make sure you use this Playlist function to keep all of it in proper order. th-cam.com/play/PLMGnMaveEzfma6qiSlhb0EOmvKyNSpg2c.html

Glad you enjoyed it! More coming soon.
Glad the window issue finally got cleared up....

Loved learning the tasty tidbits you fed us!
Carol was so Beautiful!!!
Even me, a Hard Rocker guitar player & Led Zeppelin freak listened to and has a copy of Tapestry that I still listen to. "I feel the earth move.....under my feet," and it feels darn good.

Know the area well. I used to live at 8960 & 9067 Crescent by the lookout. I miss it very much.
Yeah, wow, you lived right up there at the very top of that whole area. I imagine the view was fabulous. Thanks for watching!
@@memoryfield I originally got there in 1980, I was a recording engineer and worked for Mark Lindsay of The Raiders who lived at 9111 Wonderland. I was there when the Wonderland Murders went on, and other things. Thanks for the vid.
@@roccidisopa661Mark Lindsey also lived on Ceilo Drive, just before the Tate murders.
@@francinelostocco4884He also knew Dennis Wilson very well, who was the guy responsible for bringing Manson to meet Melcher at the place.
Thanks for doing this so beautiful there.❤🙏
Cats are comfortable in their own environment. With dogs, they can easily join their humans everywhere.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️VERY NICELY DONE! 👍🏼😎
Thank you 👍
Outstanding Billy.
Amen
Ok Billy, what can I say about this one? The Carole King house!!!!! Iconic! Tapestry is one of my fav albums of ALL TIME and it was so cool to see this house up close and personal. The stories it could tell! Loved the part about the cat too.
Thanks again for all the cool stories. 😀
Wow, thanks! We appreciate your comments and input, Tammy.
Wow, that's incredible! Sounds like you really enjoyed that night.
Very cool!
I really didn't much about Laurel Canton but now I believe it was enchante
Great series.
I'm 65.
I grew up in NE Ohio.
Watching the LC series really brings up a lot of memories.
Thank you Billy.
Well, you're very welcome and the pleasure is ours. We had a lot of fun making these videos. Thanks for watching!
love this series of videos, what a time it was!
Amazing they could build right on the street!
So well conceived!!! 🌳 🐦
carol klein king is the queen of pop. no other woman in the music business has written more great songs. she is my queen.
Joni comes up in Episode 6!
Thank you for these! I'm busy binge-watching my way through them. Your research and recording skills are to be applauded too. It's a very well balanced and well made series, such a joy to watch. Much respect 🙏
One of the best albums ever written.
Great documentary 💯 thank you for this
Thank you so much for connecting the dots and bringing this extraordinarily rich history of Laurel Canyon alive.
Cheers!
Really really enjoyed this one. Your fulfilling a dream of mine. I lived there and drove the streets, but wanted more. Love it.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Much simpler times back then, weren't they though? I was maybe just a bit too young then, LOL.
@@memoryfield Try were the best times for me.Had people I knew who lived inLCAnd in SF too.
Great series of videos. Very much appreciated.
Thanks for watching! We appreciate your comments and so glad you found us here.
I'm friends with a person who was in that scene, a musician in a band at that time in L.A. and he lived on Lookout Mtn. 65-67. He doesn't talk much about it.
Really good coverage Billy! I am enjoying all of them. Thank you!!
Episode 5 was just as great as all of the previous ones. I am tempted to binge watch the whole series but I'm holding back, I want to make them last😄😄
Yeah, don't get overloaded with all of it. We've got more on the way! Thanks for being here!
Super Billy! Have always wanted to know the Carole King story, personal to me. In such a crazy industry/time she was a rare one to keep her feet on the ground. Real musician, didn't she later mentor lots of other artists, she was like a mother of other musicians. Such a famous canyon!
Yes, she has a daughter (Louise Goffin) who became a successful musician herself for many years.
She sure started young. I have learned a lot here and I already knew a good bit
This blows my mind that John and Robby were roommates in the 60's and I ❤the doors for 29 years since 1994
This is so memorable the Hollywood hills area . I worked at Hollywood and La Brea in 1979 by the hungry tiger restaurant and I used to stop by piece o pizza 🍕. Had a piece lately . I worked at Holiday Spa 7080 Hollywood Blvd
I’ve been through Laurel Canyon many times, but I never knew these places were there!
It's kind of like a place hidden in plain sight. So much history back in there it was hard to decide what to keep in and what to leave out.
I appreciate your attention to detail …
Thanks for saying so and thanks for noticing it! I try my best.

I was a touch too young for really knowing what was going on.
I recently found your Channel and enjoy this too much! Loving Carol King. Great place yo Live, Laurel Canyon. Greetings from Spain!
Awesome! Thank you!
I’d like to think of myself as a music buff, and to come across your documentary series is truly compelling. Amazing
Yes, all kinds of cool things everywhere you go out there. The traffic is terrible though! :)
@@memoryfield it really is but the good part was my hotel was in Torrance so if my last job was in the Hollywood hills and it took me 2 hours to get back it was all free OT the crazy part of traffic was they allowed motorcycles to drive in between cars on the freeway
i have always loved the music of the mamas and papas, and i knew there was subterfuge.
What a great little series you have put together. Very informative as always. Thanks for the bell when Ep 5 was ready. I wonder, does San Francisco and the flower power era deserve your treatment ? They even have similar houses on hills.

This charming place reminds me of Greece except your architecture is fascinating.
@@memoryfield Those were the folks that believed the spin done down in LA but believed their brand didn't sell out. I too just discovered the roots of movement. Little did I know that the hippie attire came right out of the country store there as it was they that advertised the movement to white collar man on sunset blvd with the dress and dancing to bring ppl in. They didn't have to do much of that in SF though I suppose the song "If you are going to San Francisco (penned by J Phillips of the Mamas and Papas) was an advertisement

Well thank you for all the nice comments. And yes, we see all the comments and we try really hard to answer as many as we can. So glad to hear that you like what you see and hear in all of this. It was a pleasure to make this series and a real adventure to be out there in that awesome and historic area. So much recent history!

Make it a goal. It's totally worth the trip, trust me!
Mary Astor was very popular in the 30s and 40s. She was in The Maltese Falcon.
Great series, so entertaining and informative, I was 6 years old in 1968, when the better part of all this great music was being created, but I had older siblings that were into all this and had a ton of albums that would play in my house around the clock.
