- The RE-EDITED VERSION of the second episode of our Laurel Canyon miniseries, by Wolf River Music Television. A Journey Thru History and Song 1965-1974 explores the inner workings of the music scene that seemed to explode out of this area north of Hollywood in the mid-1960's and featured legendary musicians and groups such as: The Byrds, The Mamas and The Papas, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, CSNY, The Doors, Frank Zappa, Carole King, The Eagles, Gram Parsons, Love, Jackson Browne, The Monkees, etc. plus music industry giants such as David Geffen, Elliot Mintz, Jim Ladd, Ron Stone and Paul Rothchild. See the famous Canyon Country Store, Love Street, the Tom Mix Cabin, the Houdini Estate, and all of the other places made famous by the likes of Jim Morrison, Cass Elliot, John Lennon and others. We'll even touch on some of the darker elements that were lurking within the shadows such as the Manson Family and the inevitable evils of cocaine and heroin as they crept into the scene, causing havoc and destruction. No matter how many times this subject of music coming out of Laurel Canyon has been repeated in other documentaries, there's always something new to learn and discover. Burton Cummings (lead singer of Canadian band The Guess Who) has shared an amazing Laurel Canyon story on a Canadian talk show hosted by George Strombolopolous. He said he was young and they had just started to make it in the industry. The band flew to LA and Burton had one night to go find the scene. He took a taxi ride to the Whiskey A GoGo but things were wrapping up there. The taxi driver took him up Laurel Canyon instead and dropped him at the house where the big party was that night. Burton snuck in and shyly found a piano and plopped down to play. A guy sat next to him on the piano bench and Burton looks up and sees its Jim Morrison. Jim is drunk but chatty and friendly. Jim decided it was time to go, but Burton felt Jim was too drunk to drive. He offered to drive Jim wherever he needed to go and he would find his own way back to his hotel. Jim accepted and they ended up driving around LA for hours just talking all night.
The biggest break I got in life was being born in 1949. I hit the sixties running. I was born in manchester but I now reside in Liverpool. Laurel Canyons output of popular music beggars belief. The quality of the videos is outstanding. I almost feel like i am there. i hitch hiked all over the U.S. in the early seventies. Never made Laurel Canyon. I am a baby boomer currently circumventing the world. My Covid revenge!! Who would want to be 18 today??? Tomorrow I will be 73 years young...
So cool to hear all that. I would love to get over to Manchester AND Liverpool and do some historical exploration in those places. The Smiths, Joy Division, The Fall, Echo and the Bunnymen. Beatles, Hollies, etc.

Fabulous presentation. I’m almost there! August 1968, Cleveland, Ohio I saw Jim Morrison and The Doors in concert the summer of my 16th birthday. It was such an exciting time for me. I wore a black Nehru mini dress with my first pair of pierced earrings. Jim Morrison looked fabulous in his black leather pants and black leather jacket with his cascading dark wavy hair. It was such a vibrant and exciting evening. My weekends were spent dancing at the Mentor Hullabaloo, listening to the James Gang, Joe Walsh, The Yardbirds, Cyrus Erie, Eric Carmen, Alice Cooper and an interesting looking British fellow in a fur coat named Rod Stewart. Great music before they became world famous. Those were the days my friend.

Every time I see the Laurel Canyon videos I feel like the vibe of the 60's is still there. I can picture in my mind what the neighborhood was like and can hear the music playing. Amazing!
It was like lightning in a bottle, all of that history and creative energy all locked up in such a very small area that you can literally walk around in and see so much. Incredible place.

I love the houses in this area, the ones that haven’t been destroyed. They aren’t cookie cutter glitzy mansions. It’s just a laid back! I would imagine it’s like living in a time warp with so much history. I’ve driven through Beverly hills past some historical mansions. There’s an energy there. You can feel the presence of the people that lived there. It’s really eerie but I love it!
Yes it is an odd and strangely interesting place back there in the hills.
I remember when many of my rock and heroes passed at a young age. Morrison, Cass Eliot, Gram Parsons, the list goes on. they were tragic deaths at the time. On the other hand, its difficult to imagine folks like Morrison who would be the same age as I (nearing 80!). They will always be young.
Yeah, I really wished that Morrison had been able to somehow miraculously turn it all around, but it was never to be. I think in many ways he was kind of like Kurt Cobain and probably would have gravitated away from the music business and become a successful writer or even a film director. He had vision, but he also had demons.
I recently watched another documentary about Laurel Canyon, which shows Jim's connection to the Canyon began before living there. He hung out there a lot and was befriended by the band LOVE, Laurel Canyon residents, who already were under contract with Electra, but wanted out of the contract. It was LOVE who recommended that the Electra brass sign The Doors, hoping that benevolence would get Electra to release them. It didn't work.

I have a friend that rented the Norton ave. apt. that Jim Morrison had. He also lived in Laurel Canyon right across from Emily Banks in a cul de sac.
Donald became a studio photographer for many famous shows and movies. He claims that Emily Banks taught him a lot about how to shoot aspiring actresses.
He fondly speaks of his Laurel Canyon days. Not just Emily but also Mama Cass, David Cassidy and others. This was a magical place in a certain time.

Unfortunatly i was too young to attend the concert on the " Römerberg". Its a place in the middle of the historic district of Frankfurt , a city otherwise known for its skyscrapers in the later years

I went in that house prior to the fire for a Jim Morrison bday hang that the owner threw. They showed me Jim's old pink tiled shower that they kept in one piece inside the walls. True story. They had me pull out a medicine cabinet and peak inside and there it was... Also - it had lyrics and poetic lines written in it.. All lost in the fire I imagine.
No, it's STILL there. I've heard many people very recently talk about the hidden shower room and many who have been lucky enough to see it. I don't think the fire messed up the inside of the house, but I know that it has been remodeled extensively over the years. But the various owners have been cool enough to know not to tear out Jim's old shower room. It's still there.

Billy, I was born and raised in Southern California in 1960. I remember when Cass Elliott died and when the Manson murders happened. I have read the same disparaging things about John Phillips in recent years. In 2009, his daughter Mackenzie Phillips outlined in her book the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. Long and short - John Phillips was a horrible disgusting person! I hope he’s suffering for his sins…
That you're doing this it's so important to have musical history time and place awesome kudos to you right on I'm from Alameda California I heard that he lived on Alameda avenue his dad was in the military and he did a song about his address at one time I can't remember the address but my girlfriend's from Alameda California 94501 tell me he lived on Alameda avenue and his dad worked at the Alameda base he was there for some time Jim Morrison

strange. And I agree with u that James Douglas Morrison is the greatest RnR star ever, and I have him in my top ten vocalists also. I mean he could croon like Sinatra, rip his vocal cords like a screaming demon, from love street to moonlight drive to back door man live, incredible performer, poet, singer, he had it all! But I’m not biased;-) And it’s crazy also how many artists came out of laurel Canyon and their connections to the military, but that’s for ur next doc!! Thanks for the reply You have a new sub also….
Me and my kids are planning an 'Almost Famous' trip to stay at the Riot House and get a rental car so we can drive around Laurel Canyon and see it in real life. Love these videos!!! I know that's the Marilyn Manson house because of the bush/tree in front lol

@@memoryfield I had read about the history of that house in a Rolling Stone interview back in the 90s, so I Googled where it was and 'drove around' on Google Street view and found it, so I recognize the entrance and that little bush with the pointed leaves as soon as you showed it, tho I've never been there in person, Appian Way if I remember correctly lol

I grew up with two older sisters who were very different from each other but I could glean from the way they described Morrison that he had mesmerized them. I also remember a great article in Spin magazine that talked about how he was the last thing in Rock & Roll that embodied a true darkness and artists who came afterwards were easier to define or categorize . I can't understand the artist as well as my two sisters but I think I get it

In 91 when the movie The doors come out I was 25 years old living in a small Virginia Town I was supposed to leave for Los Angeles the following Monday went and seen the doors I think on Friday night left the theater feeling like I was tripping I'll never forget the feeling flying into Los Angeles I'm thinking of the song love Street I'm not going to say why I was in LA but I made good money I remember flying in at night to LAX and it was so surreal. Anyway I spent the next week out there but I was in lomita down next to Long Beach I got paid my money and I come home until the next two weeks when things was ready for me to go back to LA make more money I was connected with a very popular biker gang and they liked me because I was crazy enough to get on a jet plane leaving Greensboro North Carolina flying to Los Angeles bring in what they was Paying me to bring I'll never forget them Days inn Los Angeles it was so magical from La all the way up to San Bernardino I'm so sad now to see the city with all the homelessness and all the other bad stuff going on it's a shame our country is not what it was back then California hasn't changed much I remember going up to I can't think of the street Sharon Tate lived on with Roman Polanski and the cops pulled me and the two girls I was with we was in a Honda honey bee I had hair halfway down my back had stuff in my pocket that would probably put me in prison for at least 2 years and easily talked my way out of it with my Southern accent and I remember going up to Mulholland drive we had such a wonderful time up there me and the two girls actually they were sisters I didn't realize that sisters would do the things that these two done together I'm not going to say what but we had a damn good time anyway La was a magical place the cops in cars the topless bars never saw a woman so alone such simple but magical lyrics rip Jim Morrison, Ray manzarek I'm not sure if John and Robbie are still alive or not I don't keep up with rock and roll like I did when I was younger. Jesus Christ is who I follow now but I'll never forget them magical days when I was 25 in LA. Thank you sir you have done a wonderful job with this I'm sure I'll watch all of your videos. I could sit here and tell my entire story every trip I took to LA I didn't realize that a 25 year old could have such a good time I could probably write a book on my life they probably sell anyway thank you. ✌🏻
Great job on the Laurel Canyon series. I ventured up there in ‘92 up closer toward Appian Way and remember the POI, celeb houses, etc. Must have been a great time to be up there as I was only a year old in ‘67. Ha! Many hit songs written up there. So much inspiration. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!

Love your series. I was out there in early 68, but in Redondo Beach and Santa Monica. I remember people telling me that I should go out to Laurel Canyon, and painted such a visual picture of the wildlife (big cats, deer, etc)flowers so well, that I totally ‘saw it’. The real unsung hero’s in California were those dudes who moved refrigerators!

So do I, and I really mean that. What a time to have been alive and been living there. I lament that fact that it seems like back then, if you could play an instrument and write songs then people would at least take you seriously and you had a chance to make it in the music business. Nowadays, not so much. I've been playing the guitar and singing my entire life, but so has everyone else and their dog at this point. No one really seems to take modern music as seriously now as they did back then, at least as an artform and a way to express yourself musically.
Bill ,I discovered ( by discovered I mean to say that no one pointed it out to me) a very interesting connection between the Doors and Pink Floyd,or more specifically Jim Morrison and Dave Gilmour.It has to do with the song "Love Street".In the song,during the middle 8 ,Jim is kind of making random musings .He says(not sings)"She lives on LOVE STREET.At the store where the creatures meet...I wonder what they DO in there?".Then he says,"SUMMER SUNDAY,AND A YEAR...."Then a couple of years later,in 1970,Pink Floyd release the album,"ATOM HEART MOTHER"(with the cow on the cover)On the fourth song,"FAT OLD SUN"a beautiful pastoral ballad,about 2 verses in,Dave has verbatim,the line from "LOVE STREET" ,"SUMMER SUNDAY,AND A YEAR".......I think it's Dave's nod to Jim saying,well done on the song ,"LOVE STREET"a very warm PLEASENT tune......
That's really cool that you were able to find that connection between all of them. I'll tell you something else, I know that Pink Floyd were totally into the music that was coming out of this area back in the late 60's. Rumor has it that they were also obsessed with Frank Zappa and his music and they paid a visit to him at the old Log Cabin during a time they were in LA in 1968. Frank took them down in the basement and showed them some things he was working on and all they would do was just look at each other and then look back at Frank and nod in approval. They hardly said anything, but would just nod their heads when they liked what they heard.

Really enjoyed the history of THE DOORS! He was the male counterpart to Cass Elliot! So intelligent but trying to adapt to the superstardom he had. Very unfortunate that he passed away in 1971. Remember him by this time. Laurel Canyon really started the Rock n Roll at this point. The Doors sound was the beginning for sure. By the time LA WOMAN was released in 1971 their sound was trending towards Rock n Roll.

Better get out there fast then, before they end up tearing everything down. LOL. Seriously, there is a ton of construction going on out there all over the place. Old houses coming down and new, bigger ones going up and sitting on multiple lots.

Thanks for bringing this on!! I came to LA in 75, I was able to walk all over Laurel. Growing up on the East Coast and following the music it was a dream to walk those streets and witnessed all the events you talk about. I consider myself a lucky guy for sure!!
To understand what Laurel Canyon is (or more correctly was) is to understand what it was not: Beverly Hills.
I love your vids. You love LC and the musicians of my childhood so much and I do too. I figure Im between your age and your parents’ ages. ❤️ I try to go over the Canyon once a week. Now I know even more stories.
In 1959-60 when I was 7 years old,I lived in a small town in Pinellas County,Florida in LARGO,a suburb of CLEARWATER....In reading JIM MORRISONS biography,I learned that right around that time,a 15 year old Jim lived with his grandparents just a couple of miles from where I lived in Clearwater.......
It's a very small world, isn't it? Who knew that the 15-year-old Jim would someday become the lead singer for The Doors? Even he didn't know!

Thank you for the brief history of Los Angeles and the development of the canyon. It reminds me how young the city is. I was first there in late 1996, so 26 years ago. That seems like about 5 years ago. 26 years the other side of 1996 was 1970. I wonder are there some older people living there today who were around in the 60's. This was another great episode. I didn't realise that Jim was so young when he died. Drink will catch up with you I guess.
Yes, you're right. Even in the history of the United States, Los Angeles is considered one of the "newer" metropolitan areas that took a long time to really take off and grow. I guess it was the film industry that made it boom. And then when they figured out where to steal all their water from (Owens Valley, CA) there was no stopping the growth, lol.
And yes, Jim lived a very short and very eventful life. He was burned out by the time he was 27. It's all very sad to think of what he may have been able to accomplish if he hadn't fallen under the spell of the drink.

hey, hi Billy and the whole team, it's been a long time since I've seen your videos appear. I subscribe in case after a period without, you download your videos without me noticing. Thanks to Billy for showing me around the local grocery store. Jim Morrison actually has a history with Laurel Canyon between 1968 and 1969, which does not correspond to the best period of the Doors. In fact, towards the end of 1968, the group even had kingpin accents. It was LA's acclaimed band that was really his base. He had withdrawn a little to this city because of the problems he had everywhere else and, you could feel it in the atmosphere during the performances. Jim Morrison survived The Doors because he's one of America's greatest songwriters. Jim embodied a character from Greek antiquity to express his music that he stole from other doors or that came from himself. He was the conductor of music that had a touch of Allegro. It is this touch that makes his music timeless. But laurel Canyon is not the best period of Jim nor the 6 months which followed. It was Robbie who kind of did the work in '69 being very creative with the blues. But Jim has released a very interesting thesis on the cinema which he compares to the shadows that the prisoners of a cave see on its walls and which Plato exposed in a text. It's very interesting to dig into.

About the Doors movie. I distinctly remember Ray Manzarek going on about how great Val Kilmer was in that movie. Like Jim possessed him. Then, a few years later, they all slam it. I remember it and was surprised at the change in opinion.
Yes, I noticed some of that too. I think Ray liked what he thought the movie was going to portray but then after he saw the final edit he most definitely changed his opinions on the film.

So...I used Google Earth to locate the Morrison house, traverse to about the middle of the house (@ 19:12 of your video) and look at the double windows on the second floor. Made me laugh....and freaked out. LOL.

In those days way up here in nortern california about a hundred miles north east of reno there was a different vibe i think it was a lot like laurel canyon , the vibe is gone here but i think its still in laurel canyon
Most of it seems to be gone down there too. If you know the history, that's one thing. But if you're just hauling ass thru there to get to Studio City I don't think most of those people care at all about what was in there at one time or another. It's just a cut-thru now. Kind of sad, really.

@@cathygiuliana9089 Haha, it's all good. I would do this 24/7 if I could afford to and I would get to as many places as I could because I love music history and especially when the history is still just recent enough that you can actually go out and even find the house or the building in question.
I don’t recall the Doors being that great. And this was my preteen years with a lot of influence of four older brothers one 10 years older than myself And at the time he was a member of the Hells Angels motorcycle game. My little brother was a stoner so listen to a lot of different music. I guess the Doorsl just wasn’t on the radar.
I didn't appreciate them until LA Woman in 1971. Bought the 8 track just to check out The Doors. Proceeded to wear it out. 😂

I was fortunate enough to hear all the great music of Laurel Canyon and the 60s in general thanks to the fact that my big bro was eight years older than me. I've loved it ever since and honestly, there's no music like that around today. I feel sad for the current generation that unless they have open minds, they'll never experience that. Also, that horrible Oliver Stone movie - BIG YUCK!! Val Kilmer was not the best choice for this role. I swear to the Gods, Oliver Stone just wants the world to believe HIS version of 1) JFK and 2) The Doors. Thank heavens I heard how the rest of the Doors felt about this movie and I've avoided it like the plague ever since. (P.S. I always thought that Michael Hutchence or Ian Astbury would have been a better choice).

i was confused by the presentation of the time line. my understanding is the original house burned down and that is how the 'medierranean ' structure came into being.
The original house that Jim lived in was completely gutted and remodeled in 1990-1991. Then in 2012 there was an arson fire that damaged the house enough that it had to be remodeled once again and that's the version you see today.

Yes, indeed. He had all the qualities but unfortunately, he also fell into all the same old traps that many of his peers fell into as well. A short, tumultuous life that ended suddenly and tragically.
