    When Vance started talking about healthcare drug costs, it's insane listening to American politicians talk about drug prices and making choices in hospitals. Like, they're describing a dystopian nightmare as their ideal situation. You should never need to make those evaluations in the first place if you have a functioning medical system.

    Vance is clinging onnto the lie that he grew up poor in his rags to riches story. His family benefited from his father being a union member steel worker. He retired in a great pension with health cover. It was only very late in his grandmother's life that after supporting him and his mother, she required help. Apparently Vance pieced together his family history not in chronological order but to present the desired image.

    The campaign were clearly aiming for moderates. I agree that Tim didn’t go for the jugular when he could but I think he was thrown by how collegial Vance was and didn’t want to be the one to break that.
    I’ve seen focus groups and comments on less progressive channels where it seems people enjoyed the collegiality, so who knows. We’ll see how it shakes out soon enough.

  • @joelsommers

    It just isn't in Gov. Walz to go for the throat. Guess what? I love that about him.

    • @niclas9990
      @niclas9990 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly. I think there's a jaded political class that naturally sees the best rhetorician as the winner of a debate, and people will generally frame their reactions when asked about who "won" said debate via that perspective. But as normal folks slowly mull over what they've seen (and as clips get filter through social media), I think Walz will end up again generating far more engagement. He was just way more likable and had better answers. Did he flub a few times? Yeah. But was there anything that came across as just plain disingenuous or out of touch? No.

  • @marisabenson1222
    @marisabenson1222 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    If Walz grew his favourability isn't that saying something in terms of votes and in terms of his debate performance?

    • @niclas9990
      @niclas9990 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Bingo. We're all playing the debate game, but Walz wasn't thrown in there for his smoothness. He's there to humanize the ticket and pick up voters who want something that feels relatable. Vance never flubbed, sure, but he also never seemed genuine or even remotely interested in solving important issues. He came across as the potential status quo winner (by a point or two) of a debate. Walz was aspirational, direct, human, folksy, and his one big OOF was on a total non-issue about Tiananmen Square of all things. Talk about a desperate reach by Republicans and the media.

  • @niclas9990
    @niclas9990 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You know, I think the MR team got this all wrong. Walz wasn't being nice based on some kind of strategy -- that's who the guy is. Harris can knock Trump down a hundred pegs, that's not what Walz is there for. He's there to take her edge off and convince people the ticket isn't for the coastal elite. The minute Walz goes negative it ruins the only reason he was put on the ticket, AND it comes across as disingenuous. Walz' favorability went up after the debate, particularly among Independents, whether or not the majority of decided voters think he won it by being the better debater.

    • @TylerG13
      @TylerG13 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It’s not that Walz can’t debate, it’s that him and the team behind him didn’t want to come off as too mean. He went way too easy on Vance, that was the entire issue. Just not aggressive enough. He still clearly won on policy.

    • @TylerG13
      @TylerG13 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @i0r-r-tjtkttl There’s plenty to support Tim Walz on, that’s a really silly point to make. There’s no question who the more supportable candidate is in terms of policy. Walz guaranteed free school breakfast and lunch for kids, he legalized marijuana, he lowered prescription drug prices, he stands with unions, he’s helped cut child poverty, and banned conversion therapy.
      He’s just simply not aggressive enough.

      @i0r-r-tjtkttl Yeah, I don't mind Tim being nice about it, but he could've asked JD in a folksy way some tougher questions instead of constantly saying "we actually agree on this thing"...he did say some good stuff though, just not as much as I'd have liked, how hard is it to have a list of RW talking points and the appropriate responses to each, they've been repeating the same things for years and the list isn't really that long, because its all variations of the same crap...Medhi Hasan should absolutely offer his services to this campaign if any further debates do happen

    18:25 Break carefully, my friend. The Jewish lobby is powerful.
    Perhaps one way for Harris to shift is to say, “As with all conflicts, we need to constantly assess whether the balance between defending our freedoms and those of our allies has shifted. Are we now the aggressors? Are we attempting, now, to impose our way of life instead of defending it.”
    That should send the message to both Netanyahu and liberals that our support for Netanyahu’s campaign is not open-ended? Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan all had to end at some point.
