It seems to me that displacement of the up and down beats is a sonic form of the way that Escher questioned perspective in his artworks. Our ideas of conventional wisdoms are challenged. We in the West have been conditioned to expect that music has weak and strong beats and that they fall in set places of the bar. In moving the up and down beats, this drum part challenges that notion and the attentive listener is thrown into confusion when the snare and bass drum beats don’t fall where they are expected to fall. If the music is hard to follow, I am sure that it’s even harder to play. With this superb arrangement, Tony Arco confirms that he has a place in the pantheon of true drumming greats.
