    In defense of the Genesis version, the Genesis relies heavily on dithering. On a CRT, the dithered areas would blend together creating a new color that the Genesis couldn’t do on its own. When you put that through an HDTV, the dithering effect won’t happen. So, now you take what is already an inferior port of the game and output it in a way that was never intended and you end up with what you saw.
    I had the SNES version in the 90’s and my friend had the Genesis and though mine did look better, it wasn’t as stark as it is now.

      @JustinJTime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I know that you are right, but the Genesis port still had that ugly color even on a CRT screen because the Genesis had a low color pallet (64 colors).

      Yup, there's a reason people use CRT shaders and the like for older games. It's how they were made to look.

      No, even back then on the same TV the Genesis version looked pretty terrible. Not to mention all the out of order music and the fact they did so much of whatever with it instead of actually try to port the tracks. MK3 was a MUCH better Genesis conversion.

      In real time the Genesis version looked way worse. SNES was the way to play MK2 at home back then the same way Genesis was the way to play MK1 at home.

    I love Kenny!! He dug deep into MK in the same way I did growing up. Those Name bars was a big thing for kids like us! We scoped out every detail from hours of staring at the game in the arcade and then in magazines! You couldn’t get shit passed kids like us! 🙌🏽

    SNES had the best soundtrack for sure but that's pretty common to SNES ports. It had a much larger audio suite.

    Mortal Kombat II is my favorite of the classic MK games. MK3 is okay, but it's where the franchise starts to go off the rails. They had to release an Ultimate version to add all the characters/extras the game was missing.

    On the 32x version, the add-on hardware is rendering the characters. The Genesis hardware is rendering the backgrounds. That’s why the backgrounds look the same as Genesis because they are. Music is also being output by the Genesis, which is why that is the same and the extra sdfx samples are coming from the 32x. Ppl forget the 32x once plugged in is working with the Genesis. It doesn’t take over the Genesis.

    Yeah, most of the best MK tracks are from the OG Trilogy. But I think the PS2/Gamecube era MK games had some pretty good tracks too, people don't talk about them quite as much for that, unfortunately.

    There is a Japanese SNES version with green blood and black-and-white Fatalities (just not on stage Fatalities). Perfect for younger players, I suppose.
    Also, a PlayStation version exists, but only in Japan. It almost had overseas releases, but with Mortal Kombat 3 on the way it made more sense to launch the PlayStation with the newer game in the series. Eventually the PlayStation version of MKII didn't go to waste, and that ended up as a Japan-only release.

    For the genesis and 32x mk2, you have to go to the options menu and enable the 6 button controller. Once you do that, you have access of all 6 buttons.

    Playing the 32x
    "It's not arcade"
    "But pretty darn close"
    What?!?! Those backgrounds were as bad as the Genesis version.

    • @axelfoley20
      @axelfoley20 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's because the Genesis is generating those backgrounds. The 32x is only displaying the HUD and characters. It also displays the pictures of the fighters and character select. Pretty much everything else is just the Genesis version. Obviously Acclaim was being cheap with this port.

  • @axelfoley20
    @axelfoley20 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The problem with the 32x version is that the backgrounds were all still generated by the Genesis. Only the HUD and characters, as well as character select and other character pictures were done by the 32x. The Snes version backgrounds are better looking than even the 32x version. Then they (probe) also left out a lot of voices and the music itself was just the Genesis music, when it could have been more arcade accurate. I'm guessing cart size was an issue. But overall, The 32x hardware was definitely superior as far as colors, to the Snes. 32x could display over 32,000 colors and the Snes could only display 256 colors.

    In topic of the Saturn vs PS1, I also have to agree about the PS1's 2D capabilities. Capcom's Marvel fighting games on it were notorious for slowdowns, and the Final Fantasy 4, 5, 6, and Chrono Trigger ports via FF Anthology and Chronicles compilation discs were met with nasty loading times, which was Square's only console of choice during that time.

    If you guys are using HD Retrovision Genesis Cables for the 32x and Genesis versions, there is a little Brightness switch on the cable. If that is switched on it will add extra brightness to the picture that it doesn't need. That's only used if you have the adapters for other systems like PS1 and Saturn because the picture ends up being darker by default for some reason.

    The Gamegear isn't just a portable sega master system. it supports more onscreen colors than the MS and Genesis and has extra sound support that will make it so certain games won't run properly on MS and genesis or at all unless they are programmed to run in master system mode.

    Gamegear could display more colors than SMS, and genesis. If you play a game made exclusively for GG, Genesis won't display it correctly. I think MegaMan GG has that issue. Also GG took 6 batteries, not 9 😜

    I honestly can't get over how bad the sound effects are in the 32X version. While the voice samples are fine, the other sound effects are the same as the base Mega Drive sound effects and are your typical Sega "fart" sounds. Also there are two things that brings the Saturn version down a few pegs. The first is the loading times, being frustrating at best but being game breaking at worst, especially when playing Shang Tsung. The second is that it's missing a lot of sound effects for some reason, including a lot of the voice overs. Zero excuse for that. They also used the MIDI soundtrack from the DOS version instead of simply using the arcade OST which, again, is pretty unforgivable.

  • @greensun1334
    @greensun1334 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The SNES has the best MK2. Sure, the Saturn port looks better but there are to much dissapointments in gameplay, a pointless Shang Tsung, loading times during gameplay and fatalities etc. The SNES port is the most complete and arcade true port with the most original gameplay and game content (the real ending!). The fatalities look better (no dissapearing guts and bones, just like in the arcade original), the coloration is also better, the sound is a little muffled but true to the original. The Sega versions' synth sound doesn't fit to that game, one track is missing, the SFX are bad and the added sounds in the 32X version are to loud and obviours, it's a lazy port with bad colors etc. And why is Jade a white person in the Genesis and 32X ports? Genesis is also missing Goro's lair complete... SNES wins.

    SNES is the most overrated version. It's the only one (besides that crappy psx port or handheld versions) Where the AI is different from the Arcade. The jumping is also floaty... meaning....have fun getting eviscerated by Kintaro.
