  • In the last year I have done videos on both the Trangia Triangle and the Esbit Ultralight folding stove, both of which are great stove stands! But, here is the problem…they are CRAZY EXPENSIVE! And here is the thing, I just don’t think they are worth the money. So, I went looking for something cheaper…and I think I found something better.

    A good video but I am not sure why you would have to pay $120 for the Trangia Triangle as they are currently available in the UK for just £17.94. But then again having bought a Hennessy Hammock from the USA I am aware that the massive mark up comes from shipping and taxes etc. A lot of people have issues with the wind when using these smaller stands for alcohol stoves but a simple foil windshield improves the stove efficiency for very little extra weight. I have bought a "Disposable Roasting Tray" which is made out of thick aluminium foil and cut the bottom out and use that a a wrap around wind break. Very cheap and easy to set up and fold away.

    I just made my own. It is nearly identical to the alternative you review. It took about an hour for me to design and a few hours to make from scrap I had in my metal pile. Cost zip and works perfectly. If more people would just try to make their gear the price of this stuff would get sane again.

      You pay through your nose for your inability to think for yourself and/or make a plan of your own. I got financially wiped out in 2005 but I had a caravan. Since then I have HAD to make plans. And I've got GOOD at it. Fortunately I now have a small pension but it doesn't go as far as I'd like. I also have a side hustle that brings in a few extra bucks. No rent as I have my caravan in a HUGE farm garden in exchange for a few chores and light duties. And I have a few ideas for improving my current financial position. Videos like Way Point Survival are my favourite watching.

    The flame is still unprotected where it hits the bottom of the pot. The "windscreen" needs a windscreen. This is a common problem with most pot stands that claim to also offer protection from the wind: the protection is minimal, at best.

    I looked at these (when they were still widely available, now they're hard to come by even here in the UK) but opted for a knockoff Lixada type twig burner, the smaller one. The reason for that is that I can also burn wood in this, as well as solid fuel tabs, if my meths (alcohol) is running low.

    I just bought a Trangia Triangle burner direct from the Trangia website for 24.48 Euros (Approx Australian $38) - no where near being over $100 as mentioned in this video - pricing might be updated perhaps as the video is now over a year old - definitely worth shopping around as prices for Trangia products elsewhere are heavily inflated. Amazon prices aren't too bad but still worth double checking against the Trangia website and they do ship worldwide with free shipping for orders over 100 Euros.

    Im using the "Bushbox Ultralight" stove from Bushcraft Essentials. It weighs 10% less than the one in this video, and can be used for alcohol stoves, solid fuel tabs - AND WOOD..! Alcohol stoves are of course more practical than wood, but i still like to be able to just pick up some twigs and save my fuel if i want/need to. Using wood also makes it fairly simple to adjust the heat if i just want the food to simmer.
    The "EDCBox" from Bushcraft Essentials (worlds smallest wood stove) is also pretty cool, but it cant fit the Trangia, so you need to improvise to use it with alcohol as fuel (i just use a small aluminum tin). When it comes to using wood as a fuel source, it is easy to heat the water sufficiently to make some coffee, or maybe some dehydrated meals, but you need a DIY alcohol stove to bring it to a full boil. The "EDCBox" also fits inside my tiny cookset that is basically just for making coffee. It is an old tin for pipe tobacco, that is about 4" diameter and 1" tall, which contains all i need to boil water for coffee. The tin itself works as a pot, and have just the right capacity to boil water for the "Aeropress Go" coffee maker, and inside this tin i also have the "EDCBox", a small chapstick tin that can be filled with alcohol and used as an alcohol stove, a small box with firestarter materials, the Exotac "NanoSpark" flint lighter (inside the "NanoSpark" i store a small permanent match), a small ~7ml container with alcohol (for the permanent match), a piece of cotton rope that has been charred in one end (so it can be used as a rope lighter together with the NanoSpark), a small scrub (to clean the soot off the stove and pot/tin, and to protect the fingers from the heat when lifting the pot/tin off the stove), and a small button compass (because why not). The weight of this kit is 207g, so it is not especially lightweight, but 4"x1" is about as small as you can get, and still be able to boil water for a full cup of coffee 😎👍

    The "Lixada Ultralight Folding Titanium Pot Stand" triangle also fits the Trangia and is only $12. It does not have the solid fuel plate but was about the right height if the stove is on the ground (the pot would be 1" above the stove).

    As I have previously stated. Trangia on the upside down lid in the Bushbuddy is very safe. It's what I have. (besides the Esbit triangle) It can burn wood, it can burn alcohol. If you own a solo stove that probably works the same. I would rather not buy something made in China. On the other hand I have been toying with a cross stand directly on the body of the Bushbutdy. hmmmm, 2 pieces of 1 inch x 1/8 inch x 5 inches aluminum bar and a little DIY might just do the trick.

    The problem with all of these triangle stands is that the slightest breeze flowing under the pot will blow the flame away from the bottom of the pot. This is why designs such as the Sterno Inferno kit are best, because it creates a windbreak that goes up the sides of the pot (which also has the heat distribution design similar to Jetboil).

    • @natea1042
      @natea1042 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Too bad the Inferno has its own issues. The lid isnt heat resistant and swells into the pot becoming stuck. It is designed to only be used with the included pot. People have also reported the lock tabs getting stuck so they go to pick up the pot and end up picking up the whole stove which is less than ideal when your fuel is liquid (fire hazard). Lastly it doesnt nest neatly into itself since the flame guard has to actually hang outside the pot so it's a tad bit larger than it should be trying to pack it away. Firebox nano with it's flame guards is also highly wind resistant and can be used with whatever pot/pan combo you want plus it packs flat.
      If you want a wind resistant system that only works with one pot without the quality control concerns of the Inferno the caldera cone is another option.

    I've paid the money for the Trangia because it can be used with a gas burner, (Trangia or third party gas burner, like GoSystems, which I use). This is a big difference IMO. I have the alcohol burner and the small cross stand for it. The two piece pot stand can lie across the Trangia triangle in a 'T' configuration for smaller titanium cups, providing a fast efficient boil. Everything else is fine.
    The Trangia Triangle is back in production and generally available and is not commanding the premium prices at the time of this review.
    Get a TT and a gas burner and pair with the Trangia Mini system and you have a wonderful versatile light cooking system for either gas or spirit or one person. If using gas the burner fits into the Trangia Mini and the TT can be held with it by a rubber band. The Triangle cost me £22 a few months ago; now round £ 26 ($30 at time of posting), on Amazon UK, with an updated design for 2022 which accepts both alcohol and gas burner in a more robust design.

    There is an inverse relationship between the height of the stove and the burning of your fingers trying to light it.
    Now if they had a little door like an old 'pilot hole door' that you could light from the side....
    What would be nice if they designed a pot holder that has a place to put something under the alcohol stove to heat the stove while the stove warms up.
    Sure would speed things up in the winter time.

    Pricing .. often set at what the 'bean counters' consider that the market will tolerate.
    However, that said, one must consider labour costs, workplace conditions and living standards in the respective countries where the items are manufactured.

    The problem with this stove (and the Esbit) is that you wouldn't be able to use the simmer rings on Trangia and Esbit burners, whereas the Trangia Triangle has room (just) for a simmer ring. This may (at least in part) make up for the exorbitant price of Trangia product.

    • @villekoskela8117
      @villekoskela8117 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that is a huge negative if you want to actually cook meals rather than just boil water. This is no way superior than the Trangia.

    Oh my god here we go again, another claim that there is a better stove, this is nothing more but a way to get you to spend more money. Isn't that just great?! lol

    OR buy a Lixada titanium pack flat wood stove and add a third fuel option

  • @leonflemming354
    @leonflemming354 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another great alternative is the bushbox ultralight from bushcraft essentials.
    It offers the same as the ones you show, with the option also use wood and esbit tablets.
    I also like the top plate, cause it fits even very narrow cups.
    With the closed baseplate its 40€, but you get a made in Germany product with way more versatility

    The Trangia triangle can be used with the simmer rong of the trangia burner which is a great + ! This pot stand can not a cept the simmer ring.

    I bought a very similar one a couple of years ago.
    Use a windscreen on a windy day or bring three times the amount of fuel you would use in perfect condition.
    Make a grill or bring some nails, or tent pegs for mug sized cups and pots.
    The simmer ring won’t fit so make one out of the bottom of a tin can that is just a drop over.
    Love mine, but it sees limited use. Sort of a bug out bag item.

    The IKEA utensil holder (13.5 cm. SMALL SIZE) @ $4.99 is perfect. If hight adjustment is required, a few pieces of meat skewers will work, same for a "top grill". It doesn't fold but it will hold the stove, aluminum foil, ferro rod, etc.

      👍 .. yep, greatly underrated and if one fabricates a carrying bag from whatever is lying around at home, being as lightweight as it is, if necessary, it can be slung onto the outside of one's pack.

    Before I made a 0.2 ounce cat food can stove, i used a Trangia for quite a few years. I used an Evernew titanium cross stand(0.5 ounce for the pair and $15) plus a Toaks titanium windscreen (0.5 ounce, $11). I still use the windscreen for my cat can stove

    Our Church youth group has been making our own "stove stand" for years. We flaten out a large coffee can, and cut it to a similar pattern with tin-snips! Cost us ZERO! Folks just donate their empty coffee cans.
    These have been working just fine for 25 years.

    Hmm, I looked today and the Argos stand after shipping and import tax is the same price as the Trangia Triangle here in the UK. Both about £30, ($36). Ive been using one of the Chinese lixada stands which is very thin flexible metal in 2 parts, only weighs about 20 grams. Works fine for small pans, problem is it doesnt take the burner off the ground so is a fire risk when its dry. So have to scrape away any leaves and put it on soil, or on a mat.

    Just got mine, today. 17 days, C$31.33 with $10 shipping. Size testing with my Lixada knockoff Evernew titanium burner fits at the 1" flame level, my lil 450ml cup doesn't fit, but 900ml pot fits fine (I have a lil square grate for that purpose). I see what u mean about having to bend some tabs out for assembly.
    Also, I contacted the seller & posted the yt link, they were thankful 👍
