I find it weird that theres not enough doctors but soooo many people want to medicine and can't get in even though they meet the criteria theres just not enough spaces, the government should make more spaces at uni and then there'd be more doctors!

Exactly, according to predictions this trend of understaffed health services will get worse with aging population yet entry into med school doesn’t account for that and it’s ridiculously hard add on top of that the high friction in the course and you can see the problem

    • @veerabhadraraokoppula

Training more doctors is the not the problem. Each consultant ( any speciality) needs additional team members i.e juniors, nurses, theatre staff, out patient staff, radiographers, more theatres etc to work effectively. This will require billions of extra funding. Will everyone support that?

I think it’s great that you have taken time (which is a scare resource for you!) to give a candid, concise and empathetic resume of life as a junior doctor. You personify what is good about doctors and will no doubt be a role model for younger medical hopefuls. I hope you can also find a role where your clear ability to communicate is utilised as it is a real asset. Wishing you a fulfilled career in medicine (and btw your sister is a great lawyer!).

Thank you so much for the shout out, Sarah!!! 😊
Imposter syndrome is a problem that some (or perhaps a lot of?) PhD students face as well. I suppose at the end of the day, you just have they hired you for a reason. You just have to remember that you are qualified to be in charge and make decisions. You just have to take a step back and appreciate the fact that others place trust in you. 😊
With respect to rushing conversation, I guess when you don't have enough time, you just have to make sure everything you say has some kind of purpose, and you have to prioritise which conversation to have first. I face similar problem when I teach lab classes. As you would expect, a lot of students ask me for help. So I have to decide who and which questions deserve more of my attention. It is always a dilemma to me, and it is not a fair system, but I can't think of a better alternative. I feel it is one of those "no win" situation in life.

    Spilling truths, I see.
Compassion fatigue is real, but I think empathy has to factor as the biggest driver of motivation for doing this job. Really, empathy is key here. That should apply to patients and all medical staff. Sometimes, people forget that all the medical people are human too. They need a breather, work/life balance, and good support because this stuff can be intense. All that intensity is kind of gratifying, but you still need rest intervals thrown in there.
I would think being understaffed is the worst. I'm a stickler for organization and reliable individuals.
Shift work is absurdly unhealthy if it's a long term thing. That's the scientific truth. It disrupts circadian rhythm, skyrockets cortisol, elevates inflammation, on and on. Sleep and rest are both of critical importance to all medical staff. Dr's are not superhuman. They need to be in optimal health to do their job well. That's why it's important to take care of doctors, nurses, and well, everybody that plays a role here. It's all teamwork. 😁❤😁

Although not a Physician, due to family members being various types of Physicians and in the medical field ranging from nurses to billing coding etc. I can attest and witness to the fact that they’re overworked. The people that do not treat them as if human are the medical establishments and the hospital administrations. They do not need to be scheduled long shift work and have more breaks perhaps even several hours during the day to go home and take a “siesta”!
The problem now that’s becoming prevalent is that some are so overworked, disgruntled, losing their empathy that they take it out on the patients! There are some that are downright scary out there! That’s why the public have such distrust. The best way , in addition to getting referrals from your own networking groups, is to go online as patients give reviews which is the BEST way to find out quickly if you want that Physician for your family! Anecdotal reports in my opinion, as well as many others, nowadays, are the BEST as the patients share their own experiences of their diagnosis, prognosis, etc.
It is sad that especially during Covid our own government was paying hospitals large amounts of money to bribe them to put down “Covd” as “cause of death” which makes Greedy Hospital administrators succumb to lack of morals but downright lies and manipulation.
I think every Physician should be required to watch “Patch Adams” in medical school and all medical schools be completely re-vamped if you will, to back to the root of all diseases and cures not treating the symptoms with drugs that have worst side affects than the disease itself and never cures! Just look at all the ads and commercials if you use any online streaming or go to someone’s home that hasn’t “pulled the plug yet” (Direct TV/DISH/cable tv) you’ll see they control the network...
Approximately 100 Naturopaths are murdered annually in the USA and blamed on Suicide or an accident. Naturopaths are the healthiest Physicians around and are much happier than conventional Doctors . You are what you eat!
People are getting sick and tired of not being treated, waiting on insurance companies to pay for the test they needed initially versus having to wait and go through the system of having other diagnostics that aren’t near as effective or helpful and the trips to the appointment as well as the costs! It’s a waste of their time and money and delays their health being optimal or their pain if chronic.
With the population growing exponentially it requires even MORE patience and empathy to be a good Physician so if you are going into the field for status, money etc. then do the world a favor...DON’T!
Patients can tell when a Physican isn’t caring, attentive, abusive etc. Just because they are not a Doctor doesn’t make them stupid. It’s equal respect and putting the shoes on the others feet ...that’s what’s lacking in society. The highest vibration is Love and if everyone takes the time to raise their vibrations this world will be a better place for all!
I highly recommend all 4 of Dr. Steven Greer’s documentaries and his 2 new episodes on Gaia.
      Stay well and be smart❣️🥰

I was set on diagnostic radiography however the shift work has put me off as it would be forever and it would take its toll on my illness. When specialising in medicine the work life balance becomes a lot more manageable , am I right? I'm just wondering if shift work is very common for registar/specialty doctor? Hi Andreas, sorry to hear you are struggling. First of all CONGRATULATIONS on completing medical school!! You should be so proud of yourself, that is a massive milestone and honestly most of the hard work is behind you. When I started work as a doctor I felt so free knowing that I no longer had to attend lectures all the time and be constantly examined, as well as all my time outside of work being my free time... No more studying and revising! (well at least not as much as medical school).
Secondly, please remember that no one expects you to be at consultant level. Everyone knows you are newly qualified when you start and they are there to help.
As I'm writing this answer I'm actually thinking of lots more to say in answer to your question, so I'm going to record my answer and publish a video on it. All the best!

If I ever come across someone who argues that there is no such thing as pretty doctors I am going to send them straight to this video.
A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor’s office and tells the doctor that her body hurts everywhere she touches it. “Impossible!” says the doctor, “Show me.” The redhead took her finger and pushed on her left wrist and screamed. Then she pushed on her elbow and screamed even more! She pushed her knee and screamed, likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she touched made her scream. The doctor said, “You’re not really a redhead, are you?” “Well, no” she said, “I’m actually a blonde.” “I thought so,” the doctor said. “Your finger is broken."

It's called a dumb blonde joke.
