I've been out of school for more years than I want to remember. We had lathe's like that in metal shop when i was a kid. I made a brass hammer, a clutch alignment tool with pilot bearing adapters, a brass alignment drift and an engine stand my senior year. I loved messing around with the lathe's.
Hey bro, I didn’t read through all of the comments here but FYI, Those 3 sockethead cap screws on the back plate ARE NOT to adjust the chuck & that (adapter plate) has to be machined on the front two faces and the O.D. of the first step on the boss so it has a precise fit into the bore of the pocket on the rear of the chuck. That way the chuck mounting plate and the chuck run concentric with the headstocks axis of rotation& That’s the only way to get the chuck mounted on the plate flat. Congratulations on the acquisition but if it’s set up right you’ll have a more precise, enjoyable and rigid machine for your projects in the future
I'm very happy to see you finally getting a small machine shop up & going, you will benefit from it greatly. Now just get a good oil can for the oil cups.
Me and my neighbor have been building crazy stuff but we are not good with filming or editing ill try to send you some pictures to show you we watch alot of your videos and get motivation to build different things thanks for the content
First thing to add is a coolant system. The catch basin is already there so we are talking a couple hundreds buck. It will pay for itself in extending tooling life, faster cutting speeds, cleaner finish cuts.
That’s really cool of you to showcase other people’s builds. Also congrats on the new equipment. That’s huge! Used lathe are hard to come by in my area at least. Enjoy, you’ll be making all kinds of things before long. Great video and keep up the great builds!
I really like your channel it's a go to resource for how to build/design karts. I decided to take the plunge and build an off-road two seat kart. The hinged power package has a predator 212, TAV 30 with live axle and is nearing completion. I Settled on a frame width of 48 inches. The frame is 1/1/2 inch square tube for the bottom rails. All other tubes except for the wish bone sub-frame will be one inch schedule 30 structural tube The videos look like 48 inches is about right for a two seat Kart. I am making wood mock-ups of the kart before cutting metal for that section. Hubs will be 4 bolt golf cart style, front wheels on version 1.0 will be 8 inch golf kart. Rear wheels will be 10 inch with aggressive tread. The engine cradle is large enough for a future big block if the 212 is too puny for the job. Now for the punch line, I'm a 21 year old trapped in a 77 year old body. Incidentally, I have a 10 inch lathe and a Harbor Freight mill drill. They are invaluable assets for building. Wish I could justify the cost of a tube bender.
I’ve got a old old table top steel lathe and I’ve used that baby countless times. I’ve had several attempts at others trying to buy it. But I won’t let go of it
Dude. I been eyeing that lathe in the background, thinking when the **** is he gonna use that thing lmao. I constantly use my lathe making go kart parts. I’m vary happy for you brother.
I have one like that and a cnc plasma cutter machine. It works great cause I do allot of welding and building trailers for customers. Trust me the pics that u had to send out to get machined u can do them on that. I do pasta for other people and they pay me good. I still work for the company I been working for a very very long time.
A tip: When trying to line up a part on an old ass lathe try wacking the top of the jaw on the high side with a chunk of brass. You may be surprised at how much run out you can remove by pushing the scroll around in the chuck using this method.
@@FradyKatt Old chucks that are sprung would hardly be considered a precision tool. If it was you wouldnt have to wack the back side of the jaw to get it to line up. Personally I prefer a Buck Chuck but not very many shops want to ass up the money for them. I was a machinist for 30 years and made everything from oil field equipment to flight hardware for the NASA shuttle program. Trust me,there's nothing you can show me when it comes to machining.
Lol seems like everyone else has a lathe , milling machine and a plasma table . Now you can really show your stuff . I know you’ll use it too . When Chris gets there in Oct. he can maybe show you a couple tricks too
You could also make a rotary mill chuck out of that old 3 jaw chuck like rather b welding has for his mill. Super useful for round drilling patterns like on homemade wheel hubs or brake disks
So much... You can thread chucks directly onto the threads on that spindle. You should in fact, when you want the minimal possible runout. You stuck a brand new new back plate on that spindle, and then you DIDN'T machine it. Take a skim cut to square the back plate with the spindle. THEN mount your new chuck. Same for the old face plate and chuck. You could have fixed those just as easily. Nice freaking lathe btw. Congrats!
I can’t wait to see the tracks …. It like being a kid at Christmas, I can’t wait till the day comes when everybody get there for the big race . I wonder if you could get Derek from VGG to build a kart lol he’s moving to Tenn. soon
Tool post angle is wrong. Don’t run the indicator on the outside of the chuck as that is not an indicating surface. Get a test indicator and run it on the mating taper. This Old Tony is a great channel for people learning machining. I ran one of those in high school, ah memories.
Hey just FYI if you get sick of breaking the old leather belts. Measure it up length wise and run a GM or whatever Serp belt upside down on the flat, works amazingly and you'll never break one or slip the belt again.
Awesome lather brother, had the same exact one in my old shop I worked at. It's probably a bushing or Journal headstock but if you keep them well oiled and clean you'll never have any problems with them. Idk when they changed over to roller bearings in the scope of time but we had a journal bearing and the shit was original and had barely a half thou of slop in the headstock, considering how much abuse and hours were on the thing when we got it??? REALLY couldn't complain at that time, but they were pretty massive bronze bushings from what I remember, hopefully you'll get lucky and have the upgraded version with bearings in the headstock. Good luck bro, and can't wait to see what your outcome is with the new toy! It's a definite must have, no doubt.
I live in Manchester Tn and own Manchester speedway kart track. I’ve been following you. I build my own engines for my kart and my sons. I use the ducar 196 cc for my sons akra engine and the hf 212 for my outlaw modified engines. Which if fixing to put one of my outlaw engines on my bike instead of the stock 212 currently on it.
I'm sure you'll like the lathe. Red I have used your videos over the years and you have taught me a lot. Thanks. I got a question for you. I have a couple mini bikes MB 200 warriors, both front forks are bent. They don't produce them anymore I am told. Do you know where or what I can replace them with? Thanks for your help. Ed from Bama
Glad to here about bridgeport. Lathe and mill make anything out of metal. Need a bigger one. Thats too small. You could be a supplyer of machine parts. Electric
Hello!I want to buy the same machine, but I'm in Europe and we have a metric system. Two questions, if possible: 1.Does this machine cut metric threads or only inch threads?2. Are his limbs in inches or millimeters? I am grateful in advance for the answer!Gleb
Why would anyone waste time and money to rebuild that old wreck. Metal lathes are made for precision work, this one can't hold the close tolerance 👎👎👎👎👎👎

I learned on a 1966 southbend lathe I wish I had it now. They're awesome
Now thats the sort of machine you Mini Lathe fanatics should be looking for.😊
I'm very happy to see you finally getting a small machine shop up & going, you will benefit from it greatly. Now just get a good oil can for the oil cups.
Thank you Dave (master machinist) for helping RBG get that sweet lathe rock & rolling!
Good shit.. I work at a school and have access after hours to all the shop equipment! I freaking love it!
Me and my neighbor have been building crazy stuff but we are not good with filming or editing ill try to send you some pictures to show you we watch alot of your videos and get motivation to build different things thanks for the content
That is awesome! A Bridgeport and a plasma table too? Bro your are moving on up! I can only dream of such things.

It’s about time you got a lathe! That’s gonna take your builds to the next level and make things easier on you guys. Can’t wait for the vid!
Game changer. Master that and make loads more bits.
Every good boy deserves a decent lathe. If any of 'em don't want theirs they can give it to me.
This Old Tony will give you some tips and tricks while Ave might tell you great job or go do something to yourself.
Ya waste of time/money
Beautiful old machine I have a 2-year-old grizzly and I'm jealous of your South bend

Always oil the threads on the stub end to help get the chuck off
We have a huge lathe that came from a local sawmill and it has a 4 speed truck transmission on it to have even more speeds. Lol
Cool piece of effective old-school equipment.

Always great to learn something new.

Awesome to hear about getting a mill! If possible skip the phase converter and get a good VFD
Looking forward to your video. I have a similar Southbend.
Hey just FYI if you get sick of breaking the old leather belts. Measure it up length wise and run a GM or whatever Serp belt upside down on the flat, works amazingly and you'll never break one or slip the belt again.
Those belts don't work on a Heavy 10. The belt MUST be spliced.
Grind hard.. makes some remarkable pieces....
BRO WE'RE LIKE LATHE TWINS 😍
Great old lathe one of the best.
Damn do I miss machine class in high school

You have a nice lathe enjoy it it will put out some good parts
I’d highly recommend using the power feed for all of your turning and facing.
Take a skim cut on that new backing plate to get it super tru.
Any lathe I guess is a good addition 👍

That lathe is almost as old as me and like me still works
Sqeely beans at the start of the lathing process. I hope all you guys had your headphone volumes up high
High speed steel tooling will solve your belt problem also
I'm sure you'll like the lathe. Red I have used your videos over the years and you have taught me a lot. Thanks. I got a question for you. I want one these old lathes
my south bend lathe each ear is adjustable so you can adjust your stock center ,, must be yours is a 1 screw does all 3 at one time ?
Here is guessing that you will never use that taper attachment. I do not use mine either but I sleep better knowing it is out in the garage!
What runout tolerance will the Heavy10 hold?
I would appreciate you showing 3 phase converter
A tip cut a piece of plywood to protect your ways when removing chuck,,
I tried to turn metal on my wood lathe with hand held carbide tools. It didn't work out too well haha
On a 13 horsepower vanguard engine do you have to hook the kill switch to both coil grounds
Send it to Hard Tool Rescue. He will rebuild it from the ground up. What’s the postage to Saskatchewan?
Also get a 4 jaw chuck there easier to center up
Glad to here about bridgeport. Lathe and mill make anything out of metal. Need a bigger one. Thats too small. You could be a supplyer of machine parts. Electric
Cool

is the chuck 8"?
beautiful lathe😊
Hey guys I was just joking, Can you guys give me the name of the site you bought your chuck from, Thanks Brian
👍👍❤️
Check out hand tool rescue when it comes to restoring old tools he's the man
Use a soda can for a shim
Would do much better turning with high speed steel with the older lathes,, they don't have enough power and weight for carbide
i have a 1942 wood lathe
Come on guys one of you dropped it on the floor. Tell the truth looks like it hit a piece of steel LOL
sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
That definitely shouldnt have been chattering on that first cut.
You're putting that chuck on too tight. The first time you turn something on it, it will tighten enough on its own.
omg that poor bearing is definitaly ruined :(
Everybody is computer operated. Can pick up manual cheap
Hard material or not it shouldnt chatter like that.
Hey can I have a go kart u guys don’t use I just bought a go kart in face book and it’s giving me problems
Why would anyone waste time and money to rebuild that old wreck. Metal lathes are made for precision work, this one can't hold the close tolerance 👎👎👎👎👎👎
Your bearings are as bad as your Chuck,,
