Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial! I started to work on this throw a week ago, and I'm doing round 38 already! Can't wait to work on this beautiful piece of art! So glad you are enjoying this design. Some have struggled with this design, possibly not understanding that there is a steep learning curve. This makes me very happy that this worked out for you!
I always follow the pattern exactly the first time. On this pattern, I would recommend going up a hook size for the front ridges because slip stitches tend to tighten guage; and adjusting the joining corners with an hdc join and doing half that corner before completing the round, then completing it before the hdc join. It helps to eliminate the bulk in that corner. Almost done with #1. I'll let you know how my changes work out for #2.
I am so glad you made this video! I bought the book with the pattern in it from Annie’s Crochet, and the it has so many mistakes that I was about to give up on Rd. 39! Now I’m encouraged to once again, frog a round and try again, but now I have YOU to help me through!!

Just finished the throw, what a challenge it was. I kept telling myself that I was going to compete it. Started over once and frogged it out so many times I couldn’t count. It’s beautiful. I learned so many new stitches! I am no longer afraid of these types of patterns. Can’t wait to do another similar pattern. Thanks Bonnie for your tutorial.

I realize I am a tight stitcher and need to work on that but overall this ended up beautiful and I could not have done it without such an amazing teacher. I learned so many new and complex stitches. Thank you for how meticulous you are with directions. I can’t say enough great things about your tutorial. I am onto try next Bonnie Bay creation... the Celtic cable throw.
Thank you for your kind words EvanStacy and congratulations on getting through this one! It is definitely not for the faint of heart. Wishing you all the best!
Just finished this blanket for my granddaughter. Thanks for making the video or I might not have been able to finish it. I learned a lot of new stitches and I love the finished blanket!
I just finished making this and it is so nice..... I so wanted to show u a picture of it... Have a nice day Miss Bonnie and thank u so much for the pattern
Finished this blanket for a friend and I'm obsessed with it!!! The beginning was very frustrating and I frogged it too many times to count but I'm glad I stuck with it. Another great piece, thank you Bonnie!! *tip* I used the magic knot for the first time in this project and it's seamless to transition to the next skein and a huge relief at the end when you don't have to tie in any threads! 🙌
I just finished this one today. I enjoyed making this and it’s beautiful. Thank you very much and I found your videos are very easy to understand, very detailed. I was in the middle making the Celtic Cable Throw but ran out of yarn so I made this one while waiting for the yarn to be delivered. Thank you again and I’m looking forward for more of your videos.
I bought this pattern from Herrschner's and I'm so happy to see the pattern on video. I can work through it a lot quicker without having to undue rounds that don't make sense. I'm enjoying the pattern. I'm using a bulky yarn from Herschner's that is really soft and it is great to work through. It will turn out a lot bigger but I plan to place on top of my ivory king size quilt at home. Beautiful. Thank you for explaining on video.
Bonnie this is a GORGEOUS throw. I have over 40 years experience crocheting from the basics... hats, scarves, baby items, etc. to practically every type of blanket... mosaic, to Enterlac, Tunisian, C2C, graphgans and everything in between. But I have to admit the Celtic Weave is trying to beat me. I understand the stitches until I get to a corner and then I'm all thumbs, and I don't know which direction everything is going, how many to skip or not skip. I've watched the video over and over, even slowed it down and took notes. Same with the supplemental. The BPTC are stumping me. This is going to be a Christmas gift for our nephew and his family for their traditional Boston colonial. Please help, I don't want to let it win and just do a simple basket weave instead. Thanks! Tiff
That is the most beautiful throw I've ever seen. It's complex and I need more practice before I take it on, but this is in my future. Thank you for your well-done 2 part tutorial.
@@BonnieBayCrochet I'm finally tackling it, Bonnie, and it's gorgeous! I've just completed the elongated cable section, getting ready to conquer the rest. I'm going to be proud to gift this to my wonderful in-laws for Christmas. thank you again for showing us the way.

Thank you SO much for the tutorial! I've finished it with a 4.25 mm hook and it measures 39x39 inches with 3 and half balls of Feels like Butta yarn (large balls) Again thank you SO much for your tutorials. This is the second one I made the first being the diamond shawl/wrap. 💙
Came out beautifully. Thank you for the free video tutorial. My onky recommendation would be to verbally include the stitch count for each and every round. It was so wonderful to do, and I loved crocheting it! Stunning cabels and basket weave stitches. So much to ooooo and ahhhh over. A definate stunning addition to any room, or given as a gift (to only the very luckiest of friends)! ;)
Glad this worked out. I record as I design, so often don't know the stitch count in the moment (if that makes sense). I do provide all that necessary information in the written pattern, and the link if provided in the video description.
Just watching through before I start part 2. I suspect this part is going to take longer than the first part. Very involved. But beautiful explanations. Can’t wait to get started.😊

@@BonnieBayCrochet I'm currently trying to do your Mandela Celtic Throw. I have the written pattern and followed the video. My stitch count appears to be correct. Does the total include or exclude the corners. ie round 36 i have 76 stitches including stitches included in the corners on each side but I only have enough to do 8 and a half cables. I admit to being a good beginner. Guess I rip it back and start again
@@susanlynch1465 this is the stitch count for Round 36: 76 sts per side, 304 sts total, 4 ch-2 corners. That last cable will be established by working the last bpdc around a hdc.
Hi Bonnie, i just wanted to say that as someone with ADHD, U desperately need tutorials like this because I simply cannot follow written patterns, so thank you very much x
First I have to say that I love all your patterns and have made most of them. I have a question. On the elongated rows when you repeat rows 37-40 on the video you said on right side the corners are 2 hdc ch 2, 2 hdc and on wrong side its 1 hdc ch 2, 1 hdc. Row 37&38 it is the same 1 hdc ch 2, 1 hdc. Which is correct?
I'm in awe! 1 of your creativity and 2 that *I* understood what you were doing - but never by myself! LOL TY VERY much. If I can find the color needed I would like to give your pattern my best effort. Stay safe ... to all who view this video - 5Sep2020.
Really beautiful but as a beginner too advanced for me! I have a problem with counting stitches. But you have given me some new ideas for stitches that can be used for edging.
I’ve made a lot of baby blankets and a few layettes, sweaters, ponchos, shawls and hats. I started this one in a Red Heart Soft White yarn I had, but I just didn’t like the way the posts were turning out (I know how to do posts, not my first rodeo) so I sent away for the Premier yarn in the video. (It looks much softer than the Red Heart.) And as soon as I finish a baby blanket and an afghan for my Dad, I will start this one-and like the little engine that could, I think I can, I think I can.
I do love this pattern. However as you were mentioning how many stitches should be there after you crocheted it I had to constantly go back and find my mistake. A great help would be to offer the number of stitches before we crochet so that we can either correct any mistakes early or fix it. But great video
I am making this throw now and I am really enjoying it, but because I want it bigger I want to add another cable and some more on the celtic cable. My problem is that when crocheting the first cable (rounds 43 to 46) the corner hdc count is different. On the 35th and 39th round you crochet 2 hdc, ch2, 2hdc in the corners, but then you say later that we have to do that everytime we are working with the front side facing. Is it really different, or do I understand wrong? (I am dutch so maybe I understand wrong) I want to add on that part 1 extra cable so that would mean that I have 6 more rounds. When do we do 1 hdc and when 2 hdc in the corners on rounds 35 to 46 and further?
Ok so my 3 day on working on this blanket - still a beginner love your explanation as they are very clear. Although am a tad bit confused 🙈😫 with ths cable stitch once you come to the first corner as we have the last 2 front post double crochet - i know the hdc will be increasing as the work gets bigger - but kinda stuck on the last 2 fpdc (front post double crochet). @12:17 ... I've tried to slow the video down but just not understanding it. HELP PLEASE! thank you x
Why do you turn on the elongated cabling section? Wouldn’t that workout right if you stayed in the round? It seems like it would be easier to see the stitches from the front side.
I was going to ask that as well. I figured there is a reason, I just don’t know it... I was thinking possibly giving the hdc stitches on either end more texture if they are alternating direction?
Turning your work is important to keep your lines straight and help you project lay flat... Have you ever done a continuous granny square and once your square gets really big you notice that the middle of you square gets tilted or offset? That is from working in the round. Hope this helps!
Bonnie I’m going to try this but it looks like a year of work for me 🤣 after you did it you said I hope you enjoyed crocheting this throw with me today 🤣 I was like ok honest time representation for meeeee it will be more like , I hope you enjoy crocheting this throw with me this year 😱😂 love your videos always and is always kind to my brain injury because you include every small detail !! Beautiful throw !
Hi, just wanted to thank you for the pattern...its beautiful. However, on round 38 where we do an hdc on center of cable is very confusing. I just figured it out after frogging several times. Probably need a little more explanation on where to place this stitch...I was placing it accidentally on the last cable.😂
Hi Bonnie, for round # 43 - I went back to round 3 (8:16) of the cable stitch to start the crossing round. At the 8:16 time mark, you only do 1 hdc, chain 2, 1 hdc in that corner though you mentioned to do 2 hdc, chain 2, 2 hdc if the front side is facing. Since I'm on round 43, should I do 2 hdc, chain 2, 2 hdc instead or just follow the exact instructions at 8:16? Thanks!
So sorry for any discrepancies here. I would follow the written pattern. Here's the Round in question: Rnd. 43: (Elongated Cable Rnd 3 - crossing cable) Ch 2, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in ch-2 corner, [hdc in next 3 sts, (sk next 3 sts, hdc in hdc, fptr in next 3 sts, working in front of last 4 sts, fptr in 3 skipped sts, hdc in hdc) across, hdc in remaining hdc, (2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc) in ch-2 corner] around, join with a slip st to first st of round, slip st to ch-2 corner, turn. (96 sts per side 384 sts total, 4 ch-2 corners).
Is it normal for the last pattern of cross stitch to curl, I even switched to a bigger hook and loosened up my tension (even though I'm already a loose corcheter) ?
The round that discontinues this stitch should help with the curl, which is normal before working the last round. This design will require some blocking.
@@BonnieBayCrochet , the border is correcting the curl just as you said. This is so beautiful , I hope you dont mind but I just wanted to see how a picot would look on those shells and it is so antique looking, I just love it ( I make 4 triple and on the 5th I make one with a picot, then make 4 more triple) on the corners I will be adding tassels ( making this for my mother in law as an heirloom blanket, I incorporated some 45 years old yarn that was her mother's yarn , it was from a dead brand called Kitten Spun) thank you so much for this patter. I just bought the digital pattern book this was in ❣
@@BonnieBayCrochet if there is a way I can share an image of it with you that would be so great, I would love for the creator to see her work realized through others . Maybe you have Facebook or twitter or Instagram?
I am totally loving this pattern. It is keeping me on my toes as the cabling and turning between rounds is new to me. However I believe I may have found a tiny mistake in round 36 of the written pattern. It says hdc in first stitch and 3 bphc around next 3sts TO LAST HDC a BEFORE NEXT CH2....FINE SO FAR ...BUT THEN IT SAYS HDC in Last HDC then work HDC ch2 HDC in corner, while the video shows 2 HDc before working the corner. I noticed when I went to work row 37 having just followed the written pattern, then the next row wasn’t falling in to place. ❤️
I have frogged rows 36 and 37 a total of 3 times now due to the error you pointed out. It seems the written pattern says one thing and the video says another. So frustrating. I’m about to ditch the entire project.
Well, I made it to row 41. If the instructions said the row was supposed to have x number of stitches and I had y, I just said hell with it and skipped or added what I needed in order to have x. Hardest pattern I’ve ever done and I’ve been crocheting for over 40 years with some very complicated mandala afghans under my belt. I sincerely appreciate the creation and sharing of this pattern and appreciate the time and effort that went into it, but I wish the written instructions had a stitch count for every row. I think what’s the most confusing is the constant turning of the piece, which means the loops to the right of a stitch on the previous row that you would normally insert your hook into for a stitch (if the piece is front facing) are now on the left of the stitch (if the piece is back facing).Figuring that out helped me a lot.
This is a beautiful throw! I must admit, it was challenging for me. I found it best to work with both the video (for hands on demonstration) and the written pattern (for stitch counts). I have a question though, my border is curling in, and will not lay flat. Is this due to my tension being too tight or did I do something else wrong? What is the best way to correct it?
Hi, I have just finished the 2nd round of cable stitch and need to start the next LFR but I'm confused as to how to start it. For all the previous LFRs the round before was front-facing so you just have to continue on but the last round of cable stitch is back-facing. Do I literally just turn? Or do I need to chain etc? Thanks in advance. P.S up to now this is seriously beautiful! Incredibly time-consuming due to the amount of times I have gotten it wrong and had to frog though! Also, are we allowed to sell finished products made from your patterns? I would credit you obviously.
If you need to turn to have row1 of the LFR on the front side, then definitely turn. You will want that row as well as Row 1 of the Cable Stitch in the front side.😊
And yes, please fell free to sell your finished goods using my patterns. I only ask for designer credit where appropriate. Thanks for your consideration in asking!😊❤️
Hi there, love this throw, I live in Scotland and this is absolutely beautiful 😍 love crafts here (UK) doesn't seem to have the Premier yarn you used so thinking of ordering Highland Heather but please can you tell me how many 100g balls would I need. Your reply is greatly appreciated
Just use your favorite worsted/Aran weight yarn available there in your beautiful country Rojayel. I would pay more attention to the yardage. I used approximately 2639 yards for this throw.
Not sure if I've majorly blundered or if I'm just not seeing something accurately. On round 37 (the first cable-crossing round), I've got nine crosses. Then I've got three leftover fpdcs at the end. Should I skip those? Or should I have come out even and been able to use them all? I'm going to keep watching (note to self: I'm at 11:45) to see if it becomes any clearer...
Deeeeeefinitely my blunder! I did some recounting, and I had managed to cram in extra stitches on just that one side. So I've frogged back to round 34 (oh the agony! 😆) and will repair from there. The Crocheter's Hymn "Count your stitches, count them one by one. Though it's not exciting, frogging's much less fun. Count your stitches, count them one by one. Going slow's the quickest way to get it done!” 😁
@@teresaconley6806 Pick one . She said add more rounds to a section . Pick a section , then after you've finished following the instructions add more rounds .
I absolutely love this throw. Although, I have a question. On round 42, how did you go from 92 to 96 stitches on each side? What am I doing wrong, because I'm not getting that count.
This is somewhat normal, especially with the front side facing. The row to discontinue the Celtic Weave will help to eliminate this. You will need to block this design at the end for it to lay completely flat.
Hi I love your crochets skills I have started this pattern but am using red heart super saver medium 4 and I have don’t up to the 3 plus 1dhc and so on but am having trouble because I don’t have the same numbers as you I had up to 64 sts each side and there is no increase I can see anyways my question is shall I do it on a size 6 mm uk size crochet hook as it’s looks so tight I look forward to hearing from you thanks Denise
Bonnie? I spotted something that may have led to confusion with this pattern. I am a visual & tactile learner. The front photo is a mirrored image, so the stitches are going the opposite direction. [ I crochet right handed, & dont honestly know if left-handed crochet causes the patterns to be opposite directions😂] This is particularly obvious with the cable round, & the celtic weave. The inside photo on the pamphlet shows the Correct direction of the stitches, Imo. I hope this helps someone. It is a beautiful pattern, & the count Has to be right on, I can't do it by sight. But I want to make a 2nd one because it is so pretty!❤
Thank you, but I'm not sure which pamphlet you are referring to. This pattern (originally sold to Crochet World Magazine years ago) has been resold (and possibly edited beyond my control) so many times. I honestly have not seen the photo you refer to. Sorry!
It's looks like the same photo in the beginning of this video also. I frogged out my cable stitch beginning row 3 times thinking I was doing something wrong; because it doesn't match the photo.
On first round of crossing cables, I started with the correct number of stitches, but at the end of the first side, I have 8 crossings and only one FPDC grouping to make the ninth. ??
Hi, I’m up to the cable section and since the first lot of cable stitches that u cross my work is not sitting flat but is pukkering all the way around if anyone has some advice I would appreciate it thank you😊
For years I used patterns to crochet some complicated projects. I purchased the Annie’s crochet book to crochet this throw. The pattern is very poorly written. I used the videos which is nice but inconvenient. I notice the pattern is for sale on the link. Does this mean that the pattern has been revised?
Currently working on this gorgeous throw, and just got to the cabled rounds. While doing round 36, I keep having an extra HDC leftover from round 35. Should I just add in an extra HDC to keep the stitch count accurate? Thanks so much!
Hi Jennifer! It is too easy to get off on these stitch counts and honestly, I don't believe this will be a deal breaker, as long as you have multiples of 4 when reaching the Celtic Weave portion. Either way you can always work a decrease somewhere near the corner and no one will ever notice. ( I promise not to tell! I have lots of secrets like this and have won awards a my local fair with these well hidden among the stitches!)

I always follow the pattern exactly the first time. On this pattern, I would recommend going up a hook size for the front ridges because slip stitches tend to tighten guage; and adjusting the joining corners with an hdc join and doing half that corner before completing the round, then completing it before the hdc join. Thank you for this tutorial. I got it and it was thrilling. The design looks so nice. In a short time I became a big fan of Bonnie. Also thank you for your support, thats really kind and not for granted. I’m going finishing the Celtic Throw now 😂

I realize I am a tight stitcher and need to work on that but overall this ended up beautiful and I could not have done it without such an amazing teacher. I learned so many new and complex stitches. 🙌
So glad this worked for you Sara! Yes, this can be a challenging design.

Thanks! You can send me some photos of the trouble area to bonniebay@me.com along with more details of the issue and I’ll see what I can do!

My pleasure Ashley!! So glad you liked this one.
Yes, the outside rounds do take longer and require more yarn!
Yes it's more involved but the rounds are also getting bigger so it takes more time (and yarn like Bonnie said.)

My stitch count appears to be correct. Does the total include or exclude the corners.

I admit to being a good beginner.
Guess I rip it back and start again

First I have to say that I love all your patterns and have made most of them. I have a question. On the elongated rows when you repeat rows 37-40 on the video you said on right side the corners are 2 hdc ch 2, 2 hdc and on wrong side its 1 hdc ch 2, 1 hdc. Row 37&38 it is the same 1 hdc ch 2, 1 hdc. Which is correct?
I second that question, I've been stuck on these rounds for a while now.

Thank you Jared. This is also where it is helpful to have the pattern.
@@BonnieBayCrochet good point. I just don't have a printer so not as easy to have right beside me. But yes you are right
I am making this throw now and I am really enjoying it, but because I want it bigger I want to add another cable and some more on the celtic cable.
C une vraie merveille une œuvre d'art je vous suit de l'algérie vous avez des droits de fée merci de nous faire profiter
I wondered the same thing! 🙂
Turning your work is important to keep your lines straight and help you project lay flat... Have you ever done a continuous granny square and once your square gets really big you notice that the middle of you square gets tilted or offset? That is from working in the round. Hope this helps!
Gorgeous
Bonnie I’m going to try this but it looks like a year of work for me 🤣 after you did it you said I hope you enjoyed crocheting this throw with me today 🤣 I was like ok honest time representation for meeeee it will be more like , I hope you enjoy crocheting this throw with me this year 😱😂 love your videos always and is always kind to my brain injury because you include every small detail !! Beautiful throw !
I might start with a pillow-- that may be a good way to practice again.
@@BonnieBayCrochet Thank you so much!
Is it normal for the last pattern of cross stitch to curl, I even switched to a bigger hook and loosened up my tension (even though I'm already a loose corcheter) ?
The round that discontinues this stitch should help with the curl, which is normal before working the last round. This design will require some blocking.
@@BonnieBayCrochet thank you, I was afraid I was doing something wrong 👍😊
@@BonnieBayCrochet , the border is correcting the curl just as you said. This is so beautiful , I hope you dont mind but I just wanted to see how a picot would look on those shells and it is so antique looking, I just love it ( I make 4 triple and on the 5th I make one with a picot, then make 4 more triple) on the corners I will be adding tassels ( making this for my mother in law as an heirloom blanket, I incorporated some 45 years old yarn that was her mother's yarn , it was from a dead brand called Kitten Spun) thank you so much for this patter. The same thing just happened to me. I have 7, instead of 9. ugh!
@@sandraharling6802 very disappointing, you’ll end up buying the pattern
It just may need some blocking Cheryl.
@@BonnieBayCrochet Thank you, I will try that. Do you have a video that explains the best way to do this?
Linda maravilhosa, que Deus continue abençoando as suas mãos
How would I go about adding a few more rounds to make it bigger?
You should be able to continue with the Celtic Weave for a few more rows. Just know that this will take significantly more yarn with each round.
@@BonnieBayCrochet Thank you ❤
Not sure if I've majorly blundered or if I'm just not seeing something accurately.

Hello,
I love this throw. Is it possible to make it bigger than the measurements on the written pattern? If so what round would i start from again?
If you wish to make this bigger, I would start in the same manner, but add additional rounds of the wider sections as you desire.
So, what round would you recommend I start at again to make it bigger?
@@teresaconley6806 Pick one . She said add more rounds to a section . Pick a section , then after you've finished following the instructions add more rounds .
I absolutely love this throw. Although, I have a question. On round 42, how did you go from 92 to 96 stitches on each side? What am I doing wrong, because I'm not getting that count.
Teresa conley 2 extra stitches each end for the corners.
God I just come a cross this pattern and I have to do it just bit worried beautiful xxx
Why is my Celtic weave curling inward?
This is somewhat normal, especially with the front side facing. The row to discontinue the Celtic Weave will help to eliminate this. You will need to block this design at the end for it to lay completely flat.

Sorry!
@@BonnieBayCrochet Thx for responding! It's the instruction sheets with the Mary Maxim kit; that's what I ordered.

Hi, I’m up to the cable section and since the first lot of cable stitches that u cross my work is not sitting flat but is pukkering all the way around if anyone has some advice I would appreciate it thank you😊
Where can I see a full pic of this blanket please
