Shotokan Karate International World Kata Champion in 2013, Natsuko Mineghishi takes you into the back room of her dojo to show you where the karate belts are kept and explains what each colour means.
I love how passionate she is when she talks about the belt ranks. It's obvious she loves Karate. That's the type of dojos I look to train and be apart of. I love being apart of a gym or dojo that teach there martial art because they genuine enjoy doing so.

Delightful! My first promotion was green belt. That meant more to me than any other except for black.
Nice. I went to an American-style karate dojo when I was in late high school, we had 8 kyu.
It went:
8th kyu: White
7th kyu: Yellow
6th kyu: Green (as far as I actually got before transferring to a different club in college)
5th kyu: Blue (I was eligible to test for this but I missed the test date)
4th kyu: Purple
3th kyu: Brown
2nd kyu: Brown
1st kyu: Brown
Dan: Black
Though there are pics of my old shihan wearing a belt that alternates between white and red, I've seen a lot of high-ranking yudansha (like 7th dan and above) in American karate styles wear that.

The white belt is not based on the idea of being pure and ready to absorb.
The origins of the gi and the white belt are from the Japanese warrior, who war burial shrouds when going to battle. The white obi was part of the white shrouds. The colored belt, kyu-dan system was then introduced by Jigoro Kano Sensei, founder of Judo, who based the ranking system off of the game of Go. That ranking system was then adopted by other Gendai, such as Shotokan Karate.
You have the same colored belt order we do in shotokan here in the USA. I am teaching my children now, and they’re almost ready for yellow belt.
Hi can you please help with something... when am going to order from Tokaido Japan there is 4 Embroidery option like Embroidery 1 Embroidery 2 Embroidery 3 and Embroidery 4 ... but am confused, is the Embroidery for the 4 side of the belt or just that only for 2 side like a persons Name and Surname or title in Embroidery 1,2 and dojo name or practicing style in Embroidery 3,4 .... can you please clarify this please ??

They are competition belts. Have you ever watched WKF? They use red and blue.
I am doing wado ryu karate and we honestly only have white, green, brown and black.

ours goes a bit different but it ends with brown and black belt the same, with advanced brown (horizontal black stripe) in between. I can't believe I've made it this far actually... I watched this as a purple belt I think which is still our fourth belt of eleven and she's right, I've become a lot more proud as a brown belt.

These are perfect examples of belts that are EARNED as such does not have any value if one buys them without earning them, especially the black belt.
And this is not only Karate but any other martial art especially those with a belt system.
Another thing, the black belt is definitely of a different and better quality.

Why are colours chosen as they are. Why not start with black instead if white and end in white. Why not green before yellow. In other words why are the sequences of colours chosen in such order.
Origanally there were no belts only the white belt, which as experienced masters trained became dirty and black. Many Schools have different orders depending on the organization they're offliated to. The colours come from a judo school introducing them to a karate school.
Post-WWII people in Okinawa (birthplace of karate) didn't have loads of money so they used only one belt. You received your white belt then dyed it slightly yellow when you reach that rank. Even more yellow made it golden, then I believe some red gets it orange. Add a little blue pigment and you can get it green and even more to dye the belt blue. Then some red will get it purple and more red will make it brown. After that all it takes is some black dye to completely cover up all the previous colours.
If you started at black you would have no way of changing the colour as your rank increases. Likewise if you started at green, you can't make your belt yellow anymore since the green dye is made up of yellow and blue pigment. You can read up on what each colour symbolizes but there's a practical explanation for it as well.
In Taekwondo before the yellow belt comes a white belt with a brown stripe
