    We started the day with this beautiful Seat Ibiza; in for a Cambelt and Water Pump replacement. It was then followed by a DPF regen for an Audi A4.

      an old wise guy who taught me the job 15+ years back told me that mistakes are part of the job he was old and oaken with over 30 years experience but he still made minor mistakes and me too after 15+ years I still make mistakes

    Every day is a learning day. I have a bmw x5 40d. Im a home mecanic and changed the zf gearbox fluid. I didnt realise that xdrive cars like mine has a huge crossmember brace covering couple off the t40 bolts for the gearbox sump untill i was into the job. A standerd 1/4 size t40 bit wont fit. Luckly i got a bench grinder in my workshop at home and had to grind down a old t40 bit and wedge it into a ring spanner and get it out that way. I will never forget or lose that tool it literally saved the day. What i learnt was Being a mecanic/ engeneering is all about thinking out the box and making it work for you.

    Had the same first time I ever did a megane belt. Same floating pulley set up. Turned over by hand and it locked up. That one check saved my bacon.

      I have to be honest mate. Best policy in the world- I broke it, have to sort it. I still have the customer’s custom till this day because he knows that I can be trusted no matter how much it cost. Funnily enough, I’ve done his Cambelt like 2 months ago with their other car 😂

    I made a similar mistake on a 2003 ford focus 1.6 zetec back in the day.
    Put it back together, all running lovely, on the test drive the crankshaft bolt came loose when I turned the steering.
    Floating pulley design meant goodbye valves.
    Luckily a mate happened to have a head cheap so i rebuilt it.

    Easily done, especially with floating pulleys, no Woodruff keys. It's a pain in the butt having to remove the starter to lock the crank but to be safe you must 🥴👍

    First and only one I done was last year on my s60 d5 p2. Must’ve sat for a good 5-10 mins with my hand on the key just praying it was all in time for first crank😂👌🏻

    Yep, always triple check, good job on that one, i did my own cambelt on a car i bought cheap and it was the original 17 year old cambelt haha and wasn't actually in that bad condition. I think if my cambelt said 2019 i would leave it for another 3-5 years before changing it.

      Jesus! You’re either lucky or unlucky that the belt was not replaced 😂. Tbh the guy had only bought it a year ago and didn’t have service history for the car so he gave us a call for the ‘just in case’

    First one I did I was lucky I didn't know they were floating pulleys until I removed the crank pulley. Managed to do it without the locking tool but wasn't nice 😮

    At least you admitted a mistake ,,the beauty of working on trucks no belts just gears ,,,though i have spent the last 2 years changing the camshaft which sits deep in the engine but easy though long job

    i have done many fords that have the floating crank toothed belt pulley. not once have i used the pin for this as seen others snap or bend that pin then end up having to drop the sump to sort it.
    most learn by there mistakes one young lad i had under me at a garage teaching him after he did one and snapped the pin.
    he lost his lunch break over this had to remove the sump to get it fixed.
    i showed him after that same mistake but he did this cranking it over by hand i then showed it can be done without the tool. he had then a few more no lower tool just common sense a marker pen and a scribe tool and the cam shaft locking tool.
    it can be done without the correct tools like you state a drill bit bolt etc.
    when i was at peugeot in 89 had a belt job to do my first day there asked where is the locking tools and the workshop forman gave me a few 8mm bolts one on a bit of welding rod to lock the crank in place.
    i always crank it over by hand after doing cam belts and mark things before removal if nothing lines up after cranking it by hand then there is a problem. floating crank pulleys are a pain in the but if it a engine where you can see the flywheel or ring gear with just removing a plate ot starter is a easy removal the do it and mark it up. best way to see the crank is where it should be.
    that crank pin the young lad broke was when he put the crank bolt in and tighten it up with a air gun also seen it with a battery gun.
    best of luck with you job on the road i did it for a few years the rainy days where S*** and horrible.

      Floating crank is the pits of all Cambelt jobs tbh. I hated myself after that mistake. Took a week off to get myself together after making such a big mistake 🫣. I’ve got ways now to prevent that from happening on floating cranks., like what you said, marking the flywheel and scribe tool. We all learn from mistakes, some cheap, some expensive 😂

      @@themarvelousvlog exactly i hate turning the key after every belt job i did when i first started i still do with some.
      we all start from somewhere and we all make mistakes.
      you are still young and learning.
      never trust them locking pins that go through the block long screwdriver down the plug to find tdc or a good dial gauge with a long shaft. then mark that crank not as easy with a diesel but as you know mark it before removing the old belt.

    Got caught out on a Renault Megan 1.4 I didn't realize the crank pulley has no keyway it added hours to the job trying to find TDC
    Lesson learned no damages done thank God I copped my mistake

    im confused i didnt see you lock the flywheel up like you explaine3d you didnt do before which f....cked the focus engine up. Do you always have to lock the flkywheel with a tool aswell az the pins in the front ??

    I just did my first ever timing belt on my renault trafic, must admit I was quite apprehensive about turning the key. All went well though.

      Usually an engine out job. I know a mobile mech that can do it in 3-4hrs without taking the engine out and it’s a proper job

    My Citroen picasso 2003 1.6 tu petrol has only 43000 miles on it says the cambelt was changed in 2019 which was 5000 miles ago, i was going to leave it over the winter and check it next summer , should be ok?
    Any info on tensioning this belt? The Haynes manual says
    Its measured in SEEMS units which Peugeot Citroen just made up I've heard

    Always use a new crank pulley bolt on the 1.6 / 1.4 ford engines no key ways rely on tightness of the bolt heard of them working loose my own 1.8 zetec did they are keyed to the crank only the cams are free floating on these My crank pulley got chewed up and woodruff key so from now on new crank pulley bolt each time not worth the hassle

    Things like this happen, I mean, I have left timing lock tools in and then tried to crank over the engine. Then, I spent a whole day trying to remove the bent locking pin!

    Why would the cam belt and water pump need changing? If you said it was changed in 2021,2022, or was it just the belt that was changed before?

      Tbh with I do think that only the upper belt was replaced before; no water pump or the main running belt was replaced. But who knows, I can only speculate

    I made the mistake recently of using the wrong ratchet to take off a locking wheel nut. Snapped the bottom off of it and had to drill and smash the nut off ruining my rim. A simple brake shoe change turned into me having to do both drums as well. I also need a new rim. Lesson learned, use the right tool for the job. Mistakes happen. As long as you learn from them then it's all good...👊

    Issue with the focus it only needed top end rebuild ....if that as low rev clash ...but what you meant to do .. hopefully you kept old engine rebuilt it and sold it on

      i bet it didnt even need a rebuild, timing was too far off most likley hence compression, top slow cranking to damage valve, retime it correctly i bet it would have run, wont be the first time on a ford engine, done it my self once

      @therefused1 it definitely needed a rebuild. snapped valve, valve in the bore, slapped the cylinder wall, ruined the piston. So yeah, need a rebuild/new engine.
      If we did actually bet real money you would’ve lost 😂

      @@themarvelousvlog how unfortunate dude, these things happen, i was welding a alfa gt once, just a patch on the sill, didnt realise no seperation between sill and inside of car, some insualtion went up, before i noticed the door card and everythng, wrote it off. had to pay customer for the entire car, but luckily i managed to break it for parts so it didnt hurt me too much

    had a clutch change on a citoen 1,4hdi came back with a engine lite on dash took it back to clear fault cleared faults and within half hour its back on the 1st time he didnt even pop the bonett just sat in seat with the scan tool fault was temperure to low on intake this will be the 3rd time taking it back any advice wekcome m8

      Hmmm… if I’m correct, intake is on the gearbox side, right? If so, he needs to check all the wires that he’s touched, or might have snagged when he was dropping the gearbox
      I can only really guess as I’m not there 😅

    It’s the torquing and angle tightening of the crank pulley bolt that’s the difficult part.
    Buy the tool it’ll speed up the replacement time.
    Top tip: Always replace the stud on VW group engines securing the tensioner.

      Doing that on the floor is definitely difficult. Toque multiplier definitely helps if needed.
      I totally agree mate. They always come as a set when you purchase the belt kit anyway. Only a fool would not replace that 😂

      New updated vw kits for later 1.6 diesel engines don't have the tensioner stud for some reason !

      I think most mechanics (with the keyed cranks) zip up the pulley then start the engine and zip it a bit more afterwards just to make sure it's tight --well, what I do. However, with a stupid keyless system there is not really a way around not following the proper procedure which is going to add time to the job. Even then, the keyless systems still fail on the road...that's another story.

    High risk job,I charge 500 euro on average for labour on a timing belt,if you are going to give warranty then you have to charge well.

    I like it when people like you (and myself) say when they admit to a mistake, you get the ones who always cover up their mistakes as best as they can and never admit they are wrong calling honest people wankers, when really it's them who are just that. Why did it go wrong though and lock up? What did you actually do wrong? Leave a locking tool in there?

      To be honest with you, I’m not sure what went wrong. All the timing tools lined up, everything torqued to spec, no timing tools left in there and it just went pop pop 😭. Checked it over and over before cranking as well!

Not good for my confidence when I've got a timing belt to do on a friends 1.6 petrol Vauxhall mokka in a week or two and that's including changing the actuator pulleys. My friend who got me autodata, it says on there that for the Mokka you have to remove starter motor to lock the flywheel with a locking tool, but after looking high and low I can't find the specific one for this Mokka and even someone who used to work at Vauxhall told me just lock the camshafts with both tools used and it should be fine. After you have said that on your video it doesn't inspire much faith in my job to come.

      We dance with rain with a little of complain like the words f*k, s**t, c**t, tw*t and all of that 😂.
      All jokes aside, we always carry a gazebo for the just in case. Floor mats can stop the flowing water from getting us completely soaked

    One of my cars is 22 year old Honda its worth nothing it drives great its done a star ship mileage and its on the same belt I know this because I bought the car new I will use is until it dies, I can change the cambelt is easy to do myself but want to see how long the car lasts. Honda told me over 200k miles ago it needed replaced I just thought no it doesn't. Don't know why some manufacturer engines today still use cambelts when chains are better. Saving money is my guess. I have inspected the belt it has no cracks and looks like new

    most other mobile mechanics if they did a mistake like that they would do a runner and make excuses saying they pay for the damage but actually dont

      I know a lot of honest mobile mechs and some messed up ones (mainly not registered in the system). I’ve got reputation to protect and a family to feed. I’m happy to lose 2.5k and earn it back from providing honest service to others. It is what it is sometimes 🤷🏽‍♂️

    Free floating pulley on the crank. Caught many of a mechanic out. Don’t let a customer decide what gets fixed though.

      I have done a fair amount before this incident happened, I was just not being cautious. Had to learn to be extra when doing jobs such as this.
      Regarding the next comment, end of the day, it’s not my property, and at the time, the car was fairly new and was low on mileage so I though f*ck it, I’m insured anyway 😂

      Or torque anything up.If I don’t know the torque settings,I then use locktite ,I,ve done loads of cambelts. and got lazy not turning them over twice.Lucky never had a failure now I check everything twice.After seeing these failures,I don’t fancy forking out to replace engines.leave that others.

    I’ve made that sort of same mistake, 1.6 zetec focus I think it was 2008/09, going back years.
    Come in due to the cam belt failed, silly me didn’t do the crank bolt tight enough, bad habit just gun up as tight as they go and never had an issue.
    Started it up after the rebuild all good, revved it up and a horrible rattle and cut out, so yeah was fun taking the head off for the second time for a rebuild but this time out of my packet 🤦‍♂️
    Learn from the mistakes and move on haha!

    Ironically your next mistake will be a fine of £2500-

    Why not just do what every other mechanic does and do the old "I know your only in for an oil change but your engine needs replacing".... Worst tradespeople to deal with.

      Not me mate. Only advise what needs doing and warn them about future potential failure I.e coil spring corrosion, leaks etc…
      No need to make bucks and end up not retaining the same customer

I just discovered your channel yesterday, subscribed too, I watch loads of car mechanics, lm auto repairs, south main auto, pine hollow & bodgit and legit are my go to, all these guys are at the top of their game and it never ceases to amaze me how many keyboard warriors there are usually telling these guys they did something wrong. One that comes to mind was rear brake pads (manual handbrake), some guy in the comments was saying, some mechanic you are, you didn't disconnect the battery for safety 🙈 Keep doing what you are doing man, there's always gonna be that small percentage of trolls. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos 🧑‍🔧

      There’s always something that they don’t see behind the scenes that I do to take precautions. If I didn’t disconnect the battery, why didn’t the positive cable, that was touching the engine glow, or at least produced a spark? 🤷🏽‍♂️. Sometimes I don’t even need to explain to people but sometimes people are so stupid that you have to spell it out to them 🫣😂

    Ford engines have have no KEY on crankshaft to align pulley - they rely on friction washers. Totally retarded design. Have to remove valve cover to fo fit aligning tools etc... pain in the butt.
