Well, for my own part I reckon the Repulse was just a bit more beautiful... but not by much. And her lines weren’t ruined by the “Queen Anne’s Tower” superstructure the rebuilds were given, like Renown.
It's a couple of years old now but I am just seeing this finally. Truly beautiful modeling and weathering... When I began modeling back in the early 70s, such detail was a dream, for we were lucky to have even a decent base model with which to work. Your decking, weathering and techniques are superb. The laser cut masking would be worthwhile, as well. The etched metal parts were a great addition to my model railroading and when I saw them added to other modeling pursuits, I knew that results such as this would be where they led. Great documentation makes this all the better!
Amazing job on the deck. You have the patience of a saint. 30 minutes after starting what you did I would be foaming at the mouth , waiting for a straight jacket . 🤪 hope you have a great week !
Excellent build! In answer to your question regarding “weld lines,” I believe you are referring to the plating on the lower portion of the hull. Hood definitely had this. Unfortunately, when we were assisting fly hike with the details for this kit, we did not have the original plans for the underside (They are in poor condition and are awaiting conservation…we failed to order our copies before this happened). So, that’s why it’s smooth. Of course, someone could always later obtain those plans and approximate the plating. Speaking of the underside, we have found (in official docking records) that Hood probably never had a red underside. She was listed as having a grey bottom (and the wreck still has a dark greyish bottom in places). I know it’s too late for this build, but hopefully others will see this and paint her bottom grey. Again, excellent work as always (I loved your “Invincible” build too)!
In conclusion, Flyhawk made a big mistake. I thought it would have been perfect with the advice of the Hood Association. I'm sure they had their own reasons. I know that the color guide should be painted with blue gray, but it is dull to make it a display model. When I add the sea base later, I will paint the gray color .Thank you for your answer.
@@studioblueocean4590 I look forward to seeing another of your EXCELLENT sea bases (you are a true artist)! By the way, I am the primary H.M.S. Hood Association representative who assisted Flyhawk. I would not say that Flyhawk made a mistake, but rather, chose to err on the side of caution: They (and we, the Hood Association) simply did not have enough detailed information for 100% accurate bottom plating. Rather than guess what the plating layout was, Flyhawk felt it was best to release the model with a smooth bottom and leave any extra detailing to the modeller. Our association was unable to provide the bottom plating plans because we ourselves did not have them (the original plans are on @2.5m long linen panels stored at Woolwich Arsenal and are currently not available for duplication: they are over 100 years old are are very fragile (brittle) from age and years of handling. The plans are currently awaiting restoration and conservation…but the National Maritime Museum (which owns the plans) budget is limited and there are many competing items). Of course, the rest of the model is extremely accurate and up to date, so, even with a smooth lower hull, it’s still the best model of the ship ever released in any scale. Thank you for building a very accurate rendition of our dear old Mighty Hood, and I look forward to seeing the sea base. Again, you are a true artist!
Hood had degaussing lines running around the entire hull (added to the ship during her yard period from March to June of 1940). Those may be the "welding lines" to which you refer.
Absolutely amazing work. I thought I could make models in the past (when my eye sight was still up to it) but this has shown just how basic my skills were. Being a member of the HMS Hood Association, I am always eager to see great models of my favourite warship. Well done.
As far as I was able to find, the Hood's lower hull was never painted red throughout her whole service. The colour scheme was always different shades of grey, even though Google graphics is full of drawings/models of Hood with red lower hull. Correct me if I'm wrong
BEAUTIFUL JOB MATE! from start to finish! However as some new evidence have arose lately - just to complicate our hobby a bit more - it looks like she was wearing a dark grey antifouling colour. Not sure if she had a black boot line also. PLEASE DO keep feeding as with your spectacular models!
I also knew the evidence. But I've only wanted to make the red hull painted from a long time ago. When I add the sea base later, I will paint the gray color. Thank you for your answer.
A beautiful build and finish! 👍🏻👍🏻 I ordered two of these, one Deluxe and one ordinary and if either of them end up anywhere half as good as this, then I’ll be very happy indeed! One thing and I almost hate to say it but the Hull Red colour is incorrect. Eyewitness accounts of her sinking have always referred to the lower hull being “black”. The reality was that it was dark grey (anti-fouling grey), although a lower layer of paint was indeed black. Not that it particularly matters, as the red does enhance the overall look of the model! 👍🏻👍🏻 Thank you for uploading this video! ❤️
Working on my airfix 1:600 Hood rn! WISH this kit had the details of yours, but I'm making it work!😉 Well done as always! Made special note of your wood deck technique!
Incredible Job!,and Amazing Patience Shown through out the build!,I was especially impressed with the individual masking of the decking!,and also loved how you were able to Weather the Hull to make it appear as if She had been at Sea!
Earlier this year I started making the 1/700 Trumpeter version of the Hood, with a special Flyhawk detail set that included turned brass and a wooden deck alongside photo-etch. Even with the detail set, the out of the box Flyhawk Deluxe Edition is light years ahead of the model I would have ended up with in terms of details and accuracy. I'm currently waiting for my Flyhawk Hood to arrive as despite the progress I've already made, this is the version I want to display on my shelf. And if I can complete it even close to as well as the one shown here, I'll be very very happy.
Thanks for sharing. Outstanding build! This is on my to do list and I look forward to sourcing some of the great add-ons to mine as well. Take care and happy modeling!
Nice Job on the Hood. I don't think the Captain would have allowed her to weather as much as you have depicted, being its status. None the less possibly she was let go a little during WW2.
I just tried the blending technique on the deck of my Hood, and it looks very promising! Thanks for that inspiration! Unfortunately - I have no laser cut masking, so I have to do that by hand 😂
Great masking job as well as all the photo-edge! Patience and control. The only other time I saw someone else do deck masking like you did was in the Plamo Tsukurou series season 2 episode 6 where master Einozuke Hino built the Trumpeter USN CV-2 Lexington.
Your work is absolutely amazing . You're a master at the smallest amount of details. I really appreciate your sharing your builds. I enjoy watching them and I learn something from every build. Blessings to you.
It would be great if you could make a ship diorama like maybe an IJN destroyer in a more tropical setting i.e. turquoise water, maybe see through with some submerged details like rocks and coral reefs.
Hi - a fantastic model and a great video. One question though - why is the rear funnel significantly taller than the fore funnel? Hood's funnels were the same height. Is it an issue with the kit?
Amazing, as always. However your level of detail with painting the decking is, awesome! 👍 Can I ask what airbrush you use and what pressure you sprayed the model?
This is such a great model, and an excellent paintjob! I‘ll definitely try to copy some techniques for my next build. Being an absolute beginner though I have to ask: what was the white oil paint you used for weathering? That was such a great effect…

Or maybe he just throws them out.... yea no...
Great work , it looks like you painted some if not all the railing before you put it on. Is it easier or better to do it that way or is that just the way you prefer? Thanx for the awesome video
I do enjoy watching your build Since I’m building a 350 scale Hood too Would it bother you to tell me what is the color you used to paint the Hood Grey( main color) Thanks!
A marvelous build. I'd love to know what paint you exactly used for the hull red. It looks fantastic. I just started to build this model from Trumpeter and i hope to achieve some nice result.
Bit of an odd question here, but at 16:53 on the side of the wall at the right it looks like there is a small torpedo stuck to the wall with a triangle head. And I've noticed it on the PoW I've made. What actually is it? And what was it used for
Im sure that catwalk inside the funnel on the kit, they have designed that too low surely...a man should be able to reach over the top edge and to the cleats for painters
I consider HMS Hood to be one of the most beautiful capital ships ever built. You really did justice to her with this incredible model. Well done!
In my opinion HMS King George V is the most beatiful battleship!

It took me a moment before my memory kicked in... lol It seems over-the-counter products do not reveal tiny parts that have been consumed! :)
I've done prototyping for any company, but this is phenomenal. After all, the military model is the best.

Ah she’s beautiful, also note that if you’re planning Denmark straight diorama; Hood has dark grey instead of anti-fouling red

Beautiful work! Can you please elaborate on your weathering method, what kind of wash you use and what type of paint for the salt streaks? Thanks.
Great model! Just don't put it too close to the Bismark, things could get pretty deadly...
If by welding line you mean the ship degaussing cable, it's there on the model, at the very top of the hull where it meets the deck.
outstanding model. May I ask what paints did you use for the hull and deck (not the wood deck parts)?

+1 for The MIGHTY Hood. As she was known.
There is a note in instruction - her bottom was medium dark gray in 1941, not red.
Thank you for the information. I'll reflect it when I make the next ocean base.
All flyhawk deluxe edition kits are amazing. Just need good glasses to see 1/700 scale.. Beautiful work as usual 👍
How small are these models?
@@YourlocalNeighborhoodKid 30cm or less long and about 4-5cm wide. These models can have 100"s of parts some less that 1mm in size. 😉
AWESOME! build, and the deck is way better than any wood one!
Nice work. Beautiful ship as always
Hi again.
Do you remember which paints numbers did you use to paint the deck?
