Handshake analysis: Ding claims the high ground by offering (or accepting) the handshake from a standing position, Gukesh from a seated position. Perhaps to compensate, or maybe nervous tension, or maybe even politeness, Gukesh puts more energy into the handshake, not only curling his fingers around the bottom of Ding's hand, but also applying slight pressure both at the tips of the fingers and at his wrist, which is under tension. Ding, meanwhile, has put no effort into the handshake - his fingers are more or less straight, returning none of Gukesh's pressure, like he's merely put his hand out for Gukesh to do all the work. Is this a sign of Ding's relaxation? Him barely tolerating the formality of a handshake? A disdain of his opponent? Because the photo was taken before / after Ding did a proper handshake (which would suggest Gukesh really prolongs his handshakes)? Another thing to note is Gukesh's suits. Still only 18, and very slightly built, his suits throughout this tournament have featured large shoulder pads; this handshake-photo seems to suggest he has padding at the cuffs, too, and there are photos of Gukesh leaning across the board with strange, sharp lines parallel to his spine, almost like his entire back is cushioned, or he has wires running down.
