    Watching this after watching the Baja series, it’s truly amazing the growth and advancement you’ve made with the trucks, equipment and teams. I’ve loved watching your adventures and can’t wait to watch the next adventures!

    Clay you look so much younger back then. I bet you did know back then you would become a legend. Go from Alaska to Belize and all the other places in between and pick up sponsors like Toyota and such. Awesome journey and the overlanding was great to.

    I know it was a long time ago, but this episode in ingrained in my mind as one that really got me hooked on overlanding. I have since watched countless others and even done a few small off road trips of my own, and I always remembered this. Thanks, guys!

    You have to use two snatch blocks to double the pulling power. One snatch block only redirects the cable. It does not effect load.

      Do YOU know how pulleys work? He is correct. This is just a change of direction system. He would have needed another snatch block on the tree, and have the end of the winch cable routed back to anchor to the stump.

    I drive the greatest 4x4 on the planet guys ... a Land Rover!!
    So .. I'll forgive your 'tongue-in-cheek' remarks about the poor old disco.
    Having said that, and even though I'm a huge fan of Land Rovers, I'd still like to say how much I enjoyed watching your 'expedition'.
    It was great to see you all having so much fun .. and after all .. isn't that what 4x4'ing is all about.
    The thrills (and spills) of the trek and above all .. good mateship!! (an Aussie expression)
    Cheers from Australia.

      I have a 1971 FJ40 that needs restored, looking to mod it into a crewcab (since i have half of another one stored inside it). Wanting to put in a turboed diesel/ MT, still researching just which diesel i want. I refuse to sacrifice fuel-efficiency by cranking up the mech fuel pump like all the yahoo's seem to do these days. It sits in the backyard, waiting for the day when i have my shop finished, plus $$. So many projects waiting for $$...sigh.

    Oh and great video Clay. I enjoyed following the overland series you guys put up. Quick tip for you guys. When attaching the shackles/d-rings for your winch cable - it is best to back the pin off a quarter to half turn after you screw it all the way in. This is because when putting a load on the pin itself; it can rotate the pin while the slack is taken out from the straps; making the pin very hard to unscrew. Just thought I'd share that. Cheers!

    Warn 'Contactor Control'...a new, cooler way to say 'solenoid pack', while also making it sound like some proprietary thing you have to pay Warn $150 for, instead of just going to the auto parts store for a $20 Ford starter solenoid.
    That snatch block didn't double your pulling power, used like that, it just reversed the pull angle. You'd have to double the line After the snatch block to double the pull power. And when you wrapped the strap around the tree, you were using 'capstan forces' to take the stress off the knot. Very good.
    Beautiful country where you were. I'd love to drive/ hike/ camp that trail someday.

    Great video guys! Took me back to my youth. I read about the Boulder River and Independence when I was a kid. My mother was a ghost town addict and had a book called "Montana Pay Dirt". We used that book to visit many of Montana's ghost towns. It's a fantastic read for anybody who wants to see the BEST of the Montana back country. It was written by Muriel Sibell Wolle back in the late 50's and published in 1963 when most of the mining towns and equipment were still there and intact! This book is a MUST if you want to find those old towns. I spent hundreds of hours as a kid pouring over this book. On page 406, they detail the history of Independence and their failure to find Solomon City above Independence. My friends and I found Solomon City around 1979. It sit's about 2 miles above Independence in the saddle of Daisy pass, Just east of where the guys made camp in in Episode 1. There are canals there and the remains of two cabins! The road continues down to the wilderness boundary, about 100 yards from Blue lake, where the guys took a dip in the water.
    In Episode 1, they don't mention it, but the drive from Big Timber, MT to Independence, MT is a LONG trip!! 125 miles round trip! You HAVE to fill up in Big Timber before you make that trip or you'll be hoofing it!
    One of my fondest memories of that trip is a bunch of us guys, fresh out of high school, drive up to Daisy Pass with 5 4WD vehicles and feel like we conquered the world! (you feel like it when you reach the top because some of the switch-backs require 3 to 4 point turns, depending on how long your truck is, plus at the top, when you turn around and look where you came from....you don't recognize any of the mountains you so far in!!!) Wit all our elation and feeling on top of the world, a old, 1967 ford 2WD pickup comes clanking up the road right to us!!! We stood there with our mouths open as he drove by!
    Other times I've seen guys sunk clear to the frames, trying to dig through ice, water and mud to put a chain on their tow-hook to get pulled out of some of the deepest, nastiest mud/ice holes you could ever imagine up near Blue lake.
    You also have to be careful up there. Once you cross Daisy pass and start heading down the steep mountain side to Blue lake, if you cross any snow or wet/muddy road, that dirt turns to grease and you'll NEVER get out of there until it dries up!
    Again, enjoyed seeing my old stomping grounds! Tnx for the video!

    Love the videos.
    I have a question though. High school physics was decades ago, but I don't think the way you hooked up to the tree to move it creates any mechanical advantage; to do that, wouldn't you have to put another pulley on the tree, and hook the line to another anchor to get a 2:1 mechanical advantage?

    • @aimless_wanderer
      @aimless_wanderer 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I think he was referring to if the end of the winch was hooked up to the bumper, in order to winch your truck out. In that case, you're doubling your pulling force.

    • @truthspace5525
      @truthspace5525 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know this is an old post, but the pin side of the shackle goes through the snatch block eyes, and the strap ends should be on the horseshoe side. The line weight should be between the the first attachment point and the winch. The idea is to send the line downward to protect the driver and winch operator.

    Great Work guys, really enjoyed that episode.
    I hate to be that guy though, but, I don't think the way you had that pulley setup you experienced any multiplication in pulling force. All you were achieving was a redirect of the pulling force, plus a little extra frictional loss.

    As a new Land Rover owner, 3:08 did not give me a ton of confidence in using my car for such an expedition

      Anything post 2005 is pretty solid. We have had a 2006 LR3 for the last 12 years and 101,000 miles and then only real issue it has ever had that was the vehicle's fault was a alternator dying. But we've honestly had more issues with our GM Ford and Dodge and Toyota products than any of our newer Rovers. Our GMC have had to have $1,000 of dollars of repair work to fix transmissions and engines that leak like crazy as well as some issues with them running hot. Or constantly throwing a check engine light. Our Fords both had serious transmission issues and some small engine issues. And the Toyotas have had various recalls and some other minor things. And our Dodge has had an alternator die as well.
      My family has had Rovers for the last 20 years. We started with a 1999 D1 Discovery kinda like the one in the video then a 2002 Discovery Series 2 and then a 2003 Discovery 2 and then the 2006 LR3 and 2011 LR4. The LR3 and LR4 have been just as reliable as any GM, Ford, Dodge, Toyota we've had. But anything pre 2005 was just like you see in the video pure crap reliability wise. The old ones are fun trucks to tinker on or take on a small trip but I wouldn't go on a large expedition in one now our LR3 or LR4 I wouldn't hesitate to go one in them.

    Any expedition in mountain wilderness should include a small chainsaw. Could have cleared that tree and been on your way in a fraction of the time without all the monkeying around. Enjoying the show though:)
