- In the past decade, wind power capacity has tripled, and it’s projected to double in the decades to come. Wind is now America’s top renewable source of electricity generation, and the domestic offshore industry is finally taking off, as major manufacturers debut ever larger and more powerful turbines. While the industry faces some challenges with permitting, public opposition from various interest groups, and the obvious intermittency issues, there’s no doubt that wind is poised to play a major role in the energy transition. The question is just how fast it will grow.

Is it just me or do I think wind turbines look kinda cool? I wouldn’t mind seeing one outside my house.

With the rise in renewable generation, I'm also looking forward to the rise in storage and grid improvements, which is really needed for them to achieve their true potential.
Definitely, power grid issues when EVS are being charged 24/7 might be an issue.
@@reheyesd8666 definitely could be possible, but also think about it another way. Your EV is also a giant battery. In the evening when you come home from work you might be able to sell energy from your EV back to the grid for a profit then recharge early next morning before you go to work when wind and solar are producing excess energy at a cheaper price!

In the short term Gas peakers are an acceptable substitute for battery storage, Denmark is also investing heavily in hydrogen generation from wind power to store energy. Also in many areas there is hydro and nuclear to compliment wind and solar.

Anywhere that is permitted for offshore oil exploration and extraction should also be by default permitted for offshore wind.
Yeah wind turbines don’t work so well in mile deep water, 100 miles offshore. Maybe try something simpler, ie growing your own food before trying to run the energy industry from your desktop.

The wings of an Airbus A380 are childsplay to the size of wind turbines!
Have in mind that when they say "rotor size" they mean the diameter the blades sweep, not the length of each individual blade (or the radius).
In 2011 I worked on a team building the largest blades in the world, with a length of 73,5 meters.
The largest blades today are around 100 meters or almost the length of an American football field (120 yards).
And they produce more electricity than smaller turbines - not just in megawatt capacity but also reaching capacity much more often - as far I remember max capacity 50% of time and producing electricity 80% of times for the best/largest wind farms

Especially in boring drives through midwest states like Nebraska and Iowa, the windmills are the best part of the drive.

I saw a wind farm with huge turbines in a desolate area along a train track I travelled on. I found the huge turbines quite beautiful and mesmerizing. I love to see more of them built!

Well, how many times does it snow in Texas? Rougly once every 65 years? I think it makes total sense getting the cheap ones
@@mateosanchez1823 Winter storms regularly happen in the northern parts of the state. Storms like what happened in 2021 are more rare, but it still happens. When i was in dallas, an ice storm was normally a one every year event. The panhandle, where a lot of texas wind is, experiences more frequent freezes compared to the rest of the state

@@mateosanchez1823 The had the same issue in 2011 with freezing power plants. However if you don't winterize your power infrastructure don't then turn around and scape-goat wind-turbines because they failed when you didn't winterize them. The fact the wind-turbines failed had nothing to do with renewable energy. Any powersource can fail in cold weather without proper winterizing. However how much do you want to pay to prepare for a "black swan" event. I think Texas is having those discussions right now.

I'm not sure. People in Europe paying twice or even three times more for electricity. Looking the latest data from the U.K indicates that wind is so unreliable that natural gas is being used to generate around 90% of all demand. Plus, U.K is importing more and more electricity from neighbor countries. What a shame a wealth and developed country importing 11% of its electricity on a regular basis.

Looking at the Ofgem website from last year:
It's about 35% from natural gas, 20% nuclear, 40% renewables and 5% imports in the UK.

a large part of the U.K.'s renewables is Drax which is a consistent generator (Burning wood pellets) but it is completely wrong to categorise it as renewable. More smoke and mirrors from teh government. It's CO2 output per Mwatt hour is far higher than coal due to alower thermal efficiency.
Germany and the U.K. have some of the highest unit costs of electricity in Europe and the world due to these technically defficient souces of power.
I can understand why some would not want the wind turbines near their homes due to noise but they also wouldn't want to live near a coal fired power plant so it is probably best to try and place the turbines in an area that isn't so close to peoples homes just like a power plant. Also I heard if the turbine blades are painted a certain way it reduces the amount of birds flying into them.
Its no more noisy then liveing near a freeway; and people do that all across the country!

Here in Tulsa, OK our manufacturing is booming because they build the metal pole sections that hold up the turbine here and our highways are new and large enough to transport the poles around town. It's really a sight to see, they're HUGE.
Blaming the frozen wind turbines for the power outage is just not true. It was bad management for years.

Besides, wind turbines almost always rotate to some degree. They can turn the blades, according to the amount of wind.
They only really stop working, when there's no wind at all or too much wind.

Oil platforms were/are built just offshore from LA and the Gulf Coast and didn't hear opposition even though they risk oil spills washing up on their beach.

We just winterize wind turbines.
They work real well.
Texas lost its power because the state refused to winter-proof its facilities and its electrical grid is totally isolated from the other two major interconnected nationwide electricity grids because Texas doesn't want to be govern by policies other than their own. So now, electricity cannot be directed from other states to Texas causing days of blackouts, pipe burst, and death. Texas is so far south of North America. Do you ever wonder why other states that are far closer to the Arctic aren't as affected by the cold front as Texas?
It's because States above the Florida borderline have a higher degree of anti-ice and winterproofing for all sectors.
*Also, should I mention that all American states without Texas actually work together(Yes even Canadian provinces help American states too) to aid each other for economic benefits?!*
EX:
-All states North and North east of Pennsylvania share interstate passenger railway lines(amtrak, PATH, and MTA share interstate lines)
-Niagra falls provides electricity to not only Canadian Ontario province, but it also feeds power to NE American states.
-Hoover Dam is a power source to not only it's home state Nevada, but it actually spreads its power to California, New Mexico, and Utah!

When looking at what harm windpower might cause, you should balance that out with effects of current power production.. e.g some part of health issues, deaths, killing of entire species, increasing storms, flooding , droughts and sea level rise..

There's a study made in 2012 I think, that put this into perspective. Coal plants were many, many times deadlier per KWh. Some think like 12,000 to 2,00 per X kWh.

Wind energy was first developed with windmills in 200 BC in Persia and China.
Wind energy was then used for hundreds of years to pump water and crush grain.
The first modern turbine was built in Vermont in the 1940s.
Turbine towers normally stand over 328 ft tall.
Each turbine blade is normally 260 ft long.
Well, you almost got it right except that first modern turbine was built in Yalta, USSR in 1931.

Sadly this is not just an American thing. NIMBYs are making many of the same complaints in Norway. Sometimes they make enough noise to get projects cancelled, or scaled down. "oh, they look ugly! Oh, they make too much noise! Oh, they require too many new roads! Oh, they'll scare my sheep! Oh, you can't build here! You are ruining a completely unique environment. You should build them over there instead, because that environment is completely ordinary! (And also out of my view)"
Same problem with hydro power too. Nobody wants "their" river to get dammed up.
Everyone wants power, but it seems nobody wants to see how it's made.
To be fair, if you had beachfront property you'd be upset as well. As well as the noise, if it kept you up at night.

This story is missing an important detail about offshore wind. Far from interfereing with fish it actually saves marine life from ocean floor trawlers so wind farms become marine life refuges.
I feel like the positive traits of wind power far exceeds all the negative sides of them. And being concerned about birds only when an oil lobbyists raises such concern (directly or indirectly through media), is quite hypocritical.

I’m a wind tech, I’ve been doing it for 7 years, we are so understaffed right now it’s not even funny. Our Business is thriving. Brand new guys are making 2k a week, AFTER TAXES. it’s a great paying industry and I love my job. I’m making 3-4k a week and I’m so thankful, I’m 25, my house is paid off, my 2 kids have their college paid for already just waiting for them to turn 18. I love my industry. And were not going anywhere 🙃

I mean, it took a *LONG* time for offshore wind turbines to finally get constructed off the coast of the northeastern USA. There was considerable opposition to the putting offshore wind turbine farms near Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Island, and only recently has the technology for building offshore wind farms has been viable to put it in the deeper waters between the east end of Long Island and Martha's Vineyard.
The biggest ones we have in denmark is 10.8 MW
Wind creates lots of jobs, coal miners and other that have been laid of due to coal. Should be really exsited.
Having high temperature generation IV nuclear with heat storage would make wind power more comparable with the needs of the electric grid. Plants like these could produce back up and peak power when wind is have trouble producing power.
Looks like fossil fuel days are numbered!

Unfortunately coal, gas and oil offers cooking, heating.... which renewable often struggle to do.
@@alanmay7929 cooking oil is not the same as crude oil. Electric stoves exist and are actually superior to gas stoves. Electric heating is more expensive but eventually, it'll be how all homes are heated.

On the grid where I live in Australia, we have coal and solar and wind and gas. The Capacity Factor of coal is about 60% and the cApacity factor of wind is about 50%. Because the wind so cheap and reliable the coal power stations are closing down. Probably all gone in a few years or so.
As the wind turbines get bigger. so does their Capacity Factor, especially if they are well engineered and large enough to run in geostrophic winds above the atmospheric boundary layer.

One big thing overlooked in this article are the large battery storage facilities that have been built in Australia, California and now Texas.
Wouldn't painting one black, increase heat on that blade affecting its temp and performance?

I am so glad we are past the point of having to push for renewables in the political space. It is clear that the fossil fuel industry will be driven out of business simply on cost.
What is the payback period for these wind turbines? How long are they expected to last? What type of maintenance do they require?
I'm still a staunch supporter of nuclear energy. Should be much cheaper and if combined with wind and solar... can reduce the demand on just nuclear energy alone, thus reducing potential radioactive products required to store away.
It's still a strong proponent to get to the zero emission goal. Since nuclear power is the strong power producing technology we have and zero carbon emissions. Modernized nuclear power plants should have severely reduced the number of potential accidents and disaster that is still around on old nuclear power plants that hasn't been shut down and/or decommissioned.

I work as energy analyst for a energy company in Texas. The problem is not depending one sources of energy but a hybrid. Solar to match oil, wind to match natural gas or coal to match nuclear. The answer is simply you need a back up to back up, to the back up. Wind doesn’t allows blow and solar sun doesn’t always shine and natural gas or coal is not always the answer.
I am pro decarbonizing hence I am pro nuclear power. NP is the gold standard of clean energy. It’s as clean and safe as any alternative, requires a fraction of the resources and produces clean, reliable energy 24/7/365. NP really is the premier example of dematerialization in which we actually use less to produce more.
And we certainly don't add intermittent power sources in order to harden our increasingly fragile energy infrastructure.

All fossil fuel and nuke power plants operate on the same principle. Heat water and use it to turn a turbine. Nukes are just very big, complicated and radioactive water heaters. No quantum leap of technology for generating electricity.

With new technology, we need more good forensic Engineers to foresee any project. They will also be good to detect problems. I would say they are better in foreseeing problems.
The answer to bird deaths are Vertical Wind Turbines (VWT). These wind electricity generators do not change shape and as such are treated by birds as another obstacle to fly around. Also, they generate power regardless of the winds direction. As the grab blades are 360 degrees around the VWT.
Uhmm... regular wind turbines automatically turn into the wind.
And VWT isn't an effective way of generating electricity. There's a reason why they never took off.
Also keep in mind that fossil fuels are subsidized more than renewables on average.

Please identify any fossil fuel subsidy that is better than 30% ITC on ~95% of hard costs, 5-yr MACRS depreciation also on ~95% of hard costs, and special partnership accounting laws that enable the existence of a tax equity market whereby an investor can give you capital in exchange for efficiently monetizing the resulting massive NOLs / tax benefits? ... something tells me you have no idea what you're talking about...

The US gov't is very much "behind" renewables. The federal subsidies (Investment Tax Credit, Production Tax Credit, and others) have been around for over 10 years and are highly lucrative

My dad used to tout wind energy....over 50 years ago. Pioneer! But we need better storage systems...a better battery to store peak power is needed, perhaps at the end user's place. Note regulatory issues limiting turbines, lol, only in litigious America.
There are already companies prototyping battery tech just for storing the electricity captured from wind and solar

I live in texas and I have solar panels, it DIDN'T WORK on the winter storm. They closed the network, and I lost 1 week of production. Also, no eletricity for one week
Overseas gigantic WOOD turbines are now being used - broken down in a flatpack mode for easier transport. Now THAT is an interesting Ikea flatpack assembly challenge!
The fact is that the renewables actually outperformed the other types.
the problem is that its hard to break into an already filled market. in capitalism, its all fun and competition until there is none. every little guy has a chance at the beginning, then almost all of them get pushed out or to the edge of extinction. In our system, we don't share ideas to better humanity, but for patents to boost our own profits.

@Calvin Parish That's the point. the petro plants died, but they don't wanna say it. They keep saying it's all the renewables fault. Looks like media is keep you less informed. A good mix of supply would be great. The deployment of renewables in Texas was half assed because of the fact that they didn't want them. If they did deploy them properly... Oh, I don't know... It wouldn't have failed... Oh right... the petrol plants were half assed, too... Not geared for extreme weather that happened in 2011.... I mean, I guess climate change ain't happening, huh?

The only thing keeping people at risk of outages are antiquated laws basically requiring everyone to be on the grid. Its basically illegal to be off grid. If those laws were different you would see neighborhoods like mine that have plenty of solar make microgrids that stay on even when the main grid goes down.
Is wind energy generation cheaper than conventional gas, but in gas, does the transport to the facilities include the transport of the gas through the gas pipeline, or by whatever transport?
I am not sure of actual research, just hearsay. But some Dutch fishers have reported, that while their yield declined after the installation of an off-shore wind farm, it actually increased to pre-wind farm levels because the artificial reef provided a safe zone, that became so diverse, it pushes species out of it. So it might be the case that it helps provide a sustainable baseline. Almost like creating a marine habitat preserve.

Hi all just a message just posted this on some windfarm sites thought it was worth adding to this page So.
If you grind up old wind farm blades both glass and carbonfiber and add then to wet concrete at the batching plant i can see a real risk issue can you? ,,,,, Well its 30yrs later and the slab is to be crushed up for the new development to get made what happens with the rubble ? and more worryingly the dust. We have seen this before with a product that was loved in its day and ended killing thousands it to was mixed into concrete as sheets got were i am going yet NO ASBESTOSIS disease a man made issue rearing its head again will we ever learn from the past?

Wind turbines are only effective in certain locations in the U.S like Texas and other plains states. They can provide clean sources of energy but need enormous amounts of non-green material to construct. Bird populations are also affected via wind plants and noise pollution is also a negative externality of wind power. The amount of land needed to be used to generate wind compared to solar, nuclear, coal, and natural gas is far larger per sq/km.
Void of sunlight or other natural resources, wind power would be more efficient. Other than that it can be costly and inefficient compared to other power plants. The video does bring up good facts about the lifetime of windpower but ignores the maintenance cost and land use for wind power, which results in more cost for the amount of land used.
Lol, no. Windmills are often built on elevations, not plains. Also, the noise is pretty negligible

The term refers to a geographical location of the U.S. Looking at a map of the U.S, the highest concentration for wind power feasibility are located in areas between the Rockies and the Mississippi river (plains states region).
@@N9mber no, you dont want much wind. Windmills have to be stopped if theres much wind. Also, the reason why plains states are called such is because there are plains in them...
1. It is not suggested that Wind should be the main source of energy, only a part.
2. I have heard wind turbines (big ones) and they are not noisy at all, unless you live very close to one
3. Bird population, really? The amount of different species getting affected by black energy is 10-100x greater than what wind will ever do.

5. The benefits far outweigh the negatives, just look at air pollution alone
6. Even if you factor in the maintenance cost, you will still get a nice return on your investment, and you do not account for future improvements.
