    I wonder why they do not make many small turbines, the size of a ceiling fan, for example and mount them together on a frame to make it the same coverage as the giant blades turbines? They are easier to install, repair, and replace at a much lower cost. If one of them failed the rest of the other turbines still generate power and not causes disaster as this video talks about.

      You wondered why they don’t use lots of small turbines …
      The amount of energy available to a turbine depends on the area covered by the rotating blade. If you remember school mathematics the area of circle of radius r, is Pi x r^2 (“pi r squared”).
      So a 1m long (ceiling fan) blade covers (3.142 x 1)sq m = 3.142 sq m
      A 2m blade covers (3.142 x 2x2)sq m = 12.568 sq m
      A 3m blade covers (3.142 x 3x3)sq m= 28.278 sq m
      A 5m blade covers (3.142 x 5x5)sq m= 78.54 sq m
      A 10m blade covers (3.142 x 10x10)sq m= 314 sq m
      A 75m blade covers (3.142 x 75x75)sq m= 17,671 sq m
      So to match one of the 75m turbines would require 5,625 small 1m ceiling-fan-sized turbines. Each of those would need its own wiring, its own generator and would need technician time to connect them up. There would also need to be massive combining electronics.
      In short it’s a “square law” - make a blade twice as long you increase the potential energy by 4 times, make it 10 times as long you increase the potential energy by 100 times. A blade 100 times longer than a ceiling fan has 100x100= 10,000 times the potential energy available to it.

      @@GeorgeRow Thanks for explain. I see the longer blades have their advantage in efficiency but but I think smaller blades generators have advantage of the cost of making, installation and maintenance. Further more, when longer blade failed it is disaster. Just my 2 cent. Lol. The engineers will know the true total costs of their options.

    How about horizontal wings, Savonius or similar? Put generator room down and get mechanical energy by cardan axle, or bifilar steel wire, type that were used in cars speed meter few decades ago. Then tower can be lighter, even open structure with less wind load.

    We know how wind mills work been around for years,turbines are nothing new.and how and at who is going to replace them 25 years down the road, good industry to be in on going contracts with government subsidies expenses expenses, and no cheap power prices for the public paying for them time will tell hasn’t been done yet.??

      Water is a natural solution and salt water is even worse. Oxygen causes rust we call oxygenation. Hydrogen bonds to water creating acids as called hydrochloric acids. Sodium and chlorine also bond to create acid and solvents in a water-based solution. We can see this in acid rains.

      there are several wave power and tide power projects. the reason is because they don't make money. The wind turbines today are profitable. they literally are 3 cents per kilowatt hour, which is competitive with natual gas and solar. Coal..... is getting expensive as the govmt forces more exhaust regulations, Nuclear is 5 times as much as wind. go google LCOE.

    In the shade of the orbital solar collectors it can be considered very cold. The kind of temperature superconductors begin to do that quantum fusion thing that happens, thus taking on the properties of zero electrical resistance. Lets say that is acheived. With the idea of sending the collected power to the surface of the earth in the form of a microwave frequency. I am imagining the energy being transfered to earth would be rather high. Now imagine the electrical apparatus that converts this energy into a microwave is using mostly supercooled superconductors. This could increase the amount if usable power reaching the collector on the earth.
    I am not an electrical engineer or anything, just a man with an imagination, some electrical background, and the desire to use our new understanding of quantum mechanics to our benefit, in the most obvious way possible . Who knows. Gave they thought about this yet?

      If the wind turbine farm doesn't have it own natural gas turbines to backup their dips making it grid power the power company doesn't have the capacity to do it without running expensive peaking natural gas turbine generators. Unless forced to buy the wild AC the power company can make the power cheaper without risking its equipment to high stress wild AC. It would seem the power output from the wind farm could be culled to something usable with little backup, but that doesn't seem to be done.

      @@ThomasRogue-s8y Even if it burns "clean" they still have to put the ash somewhere. At a friend's house in the Carolinas, the power company's ash residue has contaminated counties worth of wells and lakes, and they can't drink the water from their own wells because it's too polluted.
      And then of course there are all the poluted streams and lakes in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee from acid leakage from old, abandoned coal mines.
      Meanwhile, the balsa wood and fiberglass turbine blades have been burned in cement kilns, reducing the amount of coal they need.

      ​@@ThomasRogue-s8yto be clear, anthracite coal emits as much CO2 as any other coal. The "99%" you refer to is particulate and NOx/SOx emissions. It is still burning carbon in oxygen and producing CO2, no amount of Alex Jones podcasts will ever defeat science

    A New Jersey offshore wind farm being constructed as a scheduled power plant could likely use less natural gas by suppling all the electricity from gas turbine generators running at their high efficiency electrical output of 85% with a steam cycle that adds 50% more efficiency rather than using natural gas turbines to instantly backup the wind farm's dips in electrical output up to 100%. That requires the wind turbines to run at high availability consuming 70% of the fuel as at full power, but producing little electricity. The steam cycle that can add 50% efficiency is not useful for following wild AC from solar voltaic and wind generated electricity.
    The practical use for wind and solar voltaic generated electricity is for maintaining electrical energy storage such as charging storage batteries. Hydropower can provide the high availability instant backup to wild AC from wind and solar voltaic generated electricity without a high availability stand-by cost saving water power.
    The wild AC from wind and solar voltaic generated electricity offers little fuel savings when forced onto the public power grid. The fuel savings of solar voltaic and wind generated electricity to the public power grid in the US is advertised at 1% each. The wild AC they force onto the public power grid is in the double digit percentages of grid electricity used.
    A public power grid connected home solar panel system with no storage requires instant makeup from the public power grid to supply the home. That high availability cost is nearly at the cost of suppling all the electricity.
    The forced buy of the wild AC to the public power grid is at very high prices for nearly worthless electricity greatly increasing electricity prices in some regions and distracts the public power grid from its main responsibility of producing cheap reliable electricity over a safe distribution grid. Forcing public power grids to buy large amounts of nearly worthless wild AC at very high prices is ethically wrong to its public utility responsibility of delivering long term low cost reliable safe electricity.

      This isn't really an issue if there is a wide distribution of wind and solar power over a grid. The overall slew rates mean that CCGT can run at optimum rate most of the time. If substantial battery is added, then most CCGT can be shut down most of the time.
      This as an issue in Ireland about 4 years ago, with a small grid, limited storage, and a lot of wind. New Jersey wind will probably be balanced by Quebec hydro.

      Meanwhile, Iowa has been getting roughly 60% of it's energy from wind for the past several years. And Excelon in Illinois blackmailed the state government for $694 million to keep two of its nuclear reactors running, complaining that they couldn't compete with all the cheap wind from Iowa and a few natural gas plants. Keep in mind they were already getting subsidies for being a "green" power source.
      In Texas, there is so much wind power available at night, there are electricty plans you can get on where all your night-time power is free. This makes it a great time to charge your electric car. Although it's a smaller percentage of the state's total power, Texas produces roughly 3x the wind power of Iowa.
      In Australia, Tesla's Hornsdale Power Reserve (lithium battery based) installed in 2017 saved customers $150 million and paid for itself in 2 years. It was practically printing money, so they made it even bigger.

      In case anyone comes across this later: Douglas doesn't know what they're talking about. "Wild AC" refers to alternating current electricity with a fluctuating frequency, which neither wind nor solar produce.
