    As a Chinese-American the creator of this vid was optimally situated to understand both cultures at play as the virus transmitted from China to America and I think he did an exemplary job of analyzing both the history of what happened and explaining the biology in an accessible way. • @virtualmartini
      @virtualmartini 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      They wouldn't have to be sorrowful if they didn't eat bats. Nobody is saying everyone in China eats bats, just that some people do, and that's enough. Most coronavirus strains are bat-related, in fact.

      @@314rft So do squirrels, possums, raccoons, etc. and yet you see people eating them here in the US. Part of it is a habit, but a large part of it, especially in Wuhan, is wealth. If you don't have the money to afford farm-raised beef or have the tools to properly cook chicken thoroughly without scorching the flesh, and you need food, you will eat almost anything. I'm not saying Wuhan is on average poor, it is likely quite the opposite, as if I am correct, Wuhan is a major manufacturing city in China, but rather that the populations who are poor, consume these poor-quality sources of nutrients, get sick with a novel disease, and then proceed to spread it throughout populations, oftentimes without knowing they are ill. Personally, however, if I was desperate for protein, I would turn to insects. Easy to cook, not that bad in taste, and an absolutely excellent source of protein. A small bowl of seasoned and fried crickets provides over 20g of protein. Plus they're super easy to grow and harvest.

    As Chinese, I have to say I have never heard someone will eat bats. In case I am young and I might don't know some culture things, I asked elder family member, they told me the bats looks ugly and it is a sign of evil in the culture, and they would never eat them even if get can get 1 million...
    It is reasonable because if some animals' meat is delicious, it will be popular, like pork, beef, and sheep.
    They will be remembered, generation by generation, as a counterexample

    • @iceCream0510
      @iceCream0510 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Seafox I don't know. But in my opinion, the coronavirus not only hurts Chinese /U.S. economy, but also the whole world's. It is not profitable to use coronavirus as a tool. Meanwhile, the coronavirus is likely not a biochemical weapon because almost every country is influenced by it.

    • @japuma630
      @japuma630 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      It was probably passed from a bat or pangolin that came in contact with something that people do eat. The chinese-bat eating thing is just xenophobia in action.

    • @Lee-fw5bd
      @Lee-fw5bd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@japuma630 idk if I'd go as far as to say xenophobia. I haven't seen anyone make fun of the Chinese because of it. Someone can be ignorant without being xenophobic.
      That being said, I'm fairly sure I read and was told that It spread to humabs as a result of how the meat markets are handled. If I'm not mistaken, the virus didn't even originate in bats. The markets keep different types of animals in small spaces which makes the possibility of cross-species infection very high. Add in to that pests which will be around regardless and that interact with humans and those closely kept animals on the regular and it was basically an outbreak waiting to happen.
      I don't actually know where the bat thing came from but I've only ever heard that it originated from meat markets.

    Very interesting. I like how because of your connections to China you are able to give a unique perspective. I didn't think about how that huge group of a billion people might be thinking about this all with all the world's blame being heaped on them for this. I have some family on my mothers side from Soviet Poland.. What they describe the feeling of many people was after Chernobyl was one of "How could we let this happen, we are better then that" it's a very similar to what you describe people in China feel. The truth is mistakes and mismanagement happen all over the world... I believe the key is scrutinizing only individuals and relevant circumstances. For example if a certain segment of the population of Hubei has a issue with eating bush meat... focus on them, don't group all of the Chinese together. This only even adds confusion to the situation.
    I may be wrong, I'm no expert, but that is my humble and amateur view of the situation.
    Also, I do enjoy this new podcast series and the longer more in-depth style. Look forward to more.

Anytime I do something or am about to do something even vaguely dangerous or disconcerting I can hear Emu's voice in my head: "A man took an amino acid supplement, creatine, with the prescription medication, lithium, for several months. This is what happened to his kidneys." and like, "A man used a nasal dilator to help him sleep for 2 months. This is what happened to his nasal cartilage." and "A man washed the counters with common dish soap followed by a spritz of (generic multi-surface cleaner), this is what happened when he and his family inhaled the resulting noxious fumes." It's every fucking time but at least it helps me second guess myself.

    i did actually hear about it here in USA in January 2020 - one of the doctors i work with is still relatively young and spunky, so to speak, and she liked to keep abreast of medical news. i remember her telling me she was worried it would become a global pandemic.
    in March 2020, right around when this video was published, a patient came in with their non-urgent condition, telling us 'oh by the way, i think i got coronavirus from my husband in the ICU'. within 24 hours everyone in my household was sick. i let my workplace know and that's when i found out they already decided to shut down. testing was limited still, so none of us ever got confirmed

      my mother was hospitalized in december 2019 with pneumonia that had become septic, about two o three weeks earlier, she'd went to the hospital and she'd been diagnosed with bronchitis. around that time (and into early january of 2020) i got a bad case of what i thought was bronchitis. according to my friends, i sounded like a coffee pot when i'd breathe out.
      my mother or i never have been confirmed, either. it's actually kind of terrifying when you think about it, huh?

      the real assholes are the ones firing the nurses and doctors that decide for thier personal circumstances they dont need the vax. many have natural immunity. and they were heros last year even a few months ago. now tens of thousands of them are being thrown out. while we have a pandemic and a nursing/doctor shortage already. now we will all have to pay for this in our medical care.
