    If you didn’t know, the Korean gumiho (구미호, meaning nine tailed fox) is similar to the Japanese kitsune (狐 / きつね the Japanese word for fox, but is often translated as fox spirit) and the Chinese Huli jīng (狐狸精, meaning fox essence). There’s a lot of conflicting information on their similarities and differences, whether they shapeshift, the number of tails, etc, but definitely worth reading up on nonetheless if you’re interested in Asian mythology and folklore and are having a hard time (like me) finding good books that include those topics

    I absolutely loved The Familiar, actually, and was sad that others haven't felt the same. I hope you like it when you read it! There was just something so beautiful about the story and it felt really unique - I've never read something like it before and her writing was excellent, as always.

    I wasn't going to read more Durst, because unfortunately I couldn't get through Spellshop even though I wanted to love it, but after you so highly recommended her other works I've really enjoyed The Bone Maker and Queen of Blood! Also reading her authors note was interesting, she grew up reading a lot of the same authors I did! So her and I seem to have similar taste, and I'm glad I tried her other books!

    Not spoiling it, just saying: As to "the Lost Story", not Peter Pan inspired, but another well known and well loved fantasy story. I want to pick this one up asap too. Your recommendation "made" me pick up "The Wishing Game" last year and I also found it to be so wholesome and cute 😄

    I've gotten some arcs for some of these.
    You'll love A Sorceress Comes to call. It's definitely got T kingfishers signature vibes (not like in a derivative way, but like you said she's got a distinct style. In a good way) so I don't think you will be disappointed.
    How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying is a but polarizing. I found it absolutely hysterical and hilarious and loved it so much. But it's very dark humor and super snarky, so I'm sure that turns a lot of people off to it. Honestly, Davi gives me kinda Deadpool vibes. She's a smart Alek and always has some stupid random comments. If you like that humor, you'll love the book. If not, you'll struggle with it.
    The Phoenix Keeper is maybe my fave book of this year (or maybe Dark Lord, idk). The zoo and magical creatures are everything you want. Haha. I mean I could use a lot more of them (even though most of the book is them doing their daily tasks and talking or getting the Phoenix breeding program ready to go), but I think you'll love Archie and Khonsu and their adorable antics. The romance part was meh, but the zoo parts are so good I wasn't bothered.
    Dead Cat Tail Assassins I think you'll like it you like Clarks other work. He's got cool, unique worlds and he writes kick butt women. There's snark. It's a little weird (can't get into how without spoilers and ruining things) and there are some things I typically don't like (though it worked here), but overall it's good.

    Hello Elliot, I only recently stumbled upon and subscribed to your channel but I am already looking forward to your next reads and reviews☺️ I am also a fantasy fan and I think your channel covers this genre the best. Also good luck with your book and I keep my fingers crossed that your mom’s dog behaves well. As an animal lover I find it lovely you are going to spend time taking care of him despite your own plans. Whenever you’re back we’re here🫶🏻🤗

    I think that the thing that makes John Gwynn’s books inclusive to people scared of epic fantasy is he gives previous book summaries.
    Why is this not a standard!?

    I have read Django Wexler's Burningblade & Silvereye trilogy and really enjoyed it, he has really easy to read prose and fun dialogue. i've also read book 1 of the middle grade Forbidden Library series some time ago and enjoyed that one too, had intended to continue it. I bought the Dark Lord book and intend to get to it at some point soon. Although that's all I've read of his so far, I personally think he should be talked about more!

    As a person who has read The God and the Gumiho, I still can't really say what genre it is. I think it would fall into YA much better, but the murder mystery aspect of it makes it impossible to categorize it as such (there is some gore). It's very mythology-inspired obviously, so we have the fantasy aspect, but at one point in the book it switches very unexpectedly into romance so yeah, I'm still quite confused about this book...

    @Srbthmlnsmth 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Go to God and Gumiho expecting a pretty shallow YA fantasy romance where characters act like teens despite their actual age being centuries & u might enjoy it more lol. I think trying to position it as adult does it a disservice.. like actual adult fantasy readers aren’t gonna enjoy it but I guess the Fourth Wing type ones might!

    Hi 👋🏾👋🏾👋🏾. I am currently reading the Devabad series and am on the 3rd book The Empire of Gold. The world building and characters have me hooked. Cannot wait to dive into the 4th book. I am binging the entire series which I never do. My library has just informed me that Dead Cat Tail Assassins is ready for pick-up! Finally, I will be reading a book along with you! Want to finish sequels... Amarie and the Night Brothers has a 4th book coming available, These Burning Stars has a sequel coming that I cannot wait to read.

    I hated Faithful and the Fallen. I thought they were worst written books I have touched in years. Only series I have DNF in the last 20+ years.
    If you have read both is the second series much better than the F&F.

  • @Srbthmlnsmth
    @Srbthmlnsmth 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Ugh sooo not the most positive opinion to give here BUT God and Gumiho, Jade and Dragons were both super disappointing for me personally. Maybe cuz they were anticipated… but (to me) they just read really… shallow & immature for lack of better word, especially Jade and Dragons. Like the worldbuilding is v weak, character motivations and development are glossed over and overall just a really shallow book that doesn’t serve much beyond vibes, tropes, instalove ( also reads a bit like a draft prose wise.)
    Like it’s YA at its most mediocre though not AS terrible as, say, Powerless cuz I guess the Asian elements are cool and sorta unique . So I’m curious to see if u enjoy them cuz I’m kinda doubtful based on what I’ve seen you read so far but who knows! Could be good as a palette cleanser! (Also Don’t expect dragons tho lol I think the publisher screwed the author over with the title and marketing cuz there really aren’t any dragons, just barely)
    A book I would be interested in seeing you check out (think u mentioned it before) is Fathomfolk! I think that one is reeeally misunderstood by readers partially cuz of its marketing, but it makes some interesting commentary (important to note the author isn’t American, so a lot of readers seem
    To be attributing American mindsets to her which is unfair imo) although it reads YA in parts
