    Where the test is very close, virtually a draw, then it should be the thinner diameter line that should take the win.

    Great video, thanks for sharing. I still use traditional Berkley or Stren mono (I'm too old to change) works well for me. When fishing line breaks it's rarely the fault of the line. (Unless it's old)
    Fishing line like everything else becomes a religion...everyone has a brand and a good story to go a long with it. Sometimes listening to seasoned experienced so called experts only adds to the confusion.
    Even with my poor vision, I can easily see all kinds of line in the water..I'm sure the fish can see the leader as well. (I wonder if they even care)

      Who cares about abbrasion resistance I care about diameter to lb test and the color mostly because if the diameter is equal the line that is stronger for it's diameter with be better for visability, abbrasion resistance ect.

    I have always loved stren for the strength but for bass I love Berkeley. Both are great for the money. Berkeley will give you a extra feel of what the fish is doing. Stren can be tricky it will back lash when it is new but hardly ever have to change it. With the Sten was able to get my Hook out of rocks and other snags.

    I'm an old guy who's fished for over 60 years and I've been using Stren for most of those years with great success. Many of my fishing buddies has used other brands including fluorocarbon but I've stuck with original stren mostly. I always believed that a company as big and well known as Dupont should produce a superior product and in my solely opinion I believe they do. Thank you for your testing.

    Good experiment but I hope people assess their fishing environment and choose based on where and how they’re fishing! Sometimes abrasion resistance is last in terms of variables to consider and sometimes it’s first. I’ll be fishing off a pier in a couple weeks so I put 50 yards of 50lb big game on my Avet MXL over 30lb braid. In open water I use 100+ yards of 30lb fluorocarbon so the situation really makes my decisions! Also depends on how long your leader is, if it’s 3’ compared to a topshot then it’s a different game! Bottom line, assess your situation and conditions and choose based on that!

    This is what I do using main line mono for a leader / using the very finest grit emery paper , some also call it crocus cloth and run a piece of line thru it holding the crocus cloth folded between your index finger and thumb just enough to remove the shine .. I believe it makes the line almost invisible and you have the durability of mono

  • @ChiefToad
    @ChiefToad 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Out of all these tests I have seen conducted, the most important factor seems to be the ability of the line to stretch as being the most important factor. Since that is the one characteristic that the mainline mono exhibits over all the others.(That along with it's increased diameter) I originally thought that the density/stiffness of fluoro would give it an edge, but this particular test disproved that. I guess that extra amount of pliability goes a long way in retaining integrity under load. Along with being slightly thicker.

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree that the stretch may very well be a big factor. I used to think that the added diameter of mono relative to braid was a factor too, but that got disproven in another test (www.saltstrong.com/fishing-tip/fluorocarbon-leader-abrasion-test-vs-mono/) in which a 20 lb mono beat a 25 lb fluoro that had a thicker diameter than the 20 lb mono.
      So now, I believe that the difference is due to either the added density of the fluoro making it more brittle than the mono, or the strength of the mono somehow enabling it to withstand more abrasion... or perhaps a combination of the two.

    I fished 15 & 20lb. Up to 100lb Big Game for 10 years on the west coast worked good for me. Never did care for that stretchy lavender stuff. After I was introduced to Trilene low vis green it's been my go to of choice since 83. A friend gave me a spool full of 4lb Maxima for crappies but lb/lb for the cost...I caught just as many fish as he did and just as big on the crappies and toothy walleyes. Now northerns will chew through most anything up to 10lb test. In Minnesota most guys I knew fished 6 or 8 maybe 10 for trolling only because of that 10lb trolling. Never know what you'll hook.

    • @Saltstrong

      Salt Strong just adding(what is that 2lbs) cut the Andes abrasion resistance in half? 40 to 22-ish. Um, why test the Trilene XL against Ande leader material? The XL is a mainline you would fill your spool with, the Ande is only 50yrds long for leaders. Or does this Ande come in a spool long enough to spool a reel with as a mainline? Seems like an odd comparison otherwise. Shouldn't the Ande be tested against other leader material, not a mainline?

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So far, I have not seen any difference in "leader" line vs. bulk spool line from an individual manufacture unless the line is a different size... the leader spools seem to be more about convenience of carrying a spool where the line won't get all over the place like it would in a bulk spool. One example of this is the fact that the other two bulk spools (seemed to do a bit better than the Ande leader spool).
      Overall, I can care less how they market the lines... I just want the best line without wasting money.

    • @Tight--LiNeZ
      @Tight--LiNeZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Saltstrong Okidoki, but if the material Ande use for this leader isn't available as a mainline, what's the point testing it against three mainline spools? seems an odd comparison. An Ande mainline product should have been used. One a different note, what do you think of Izorline? it used to be the bee's knees 20 odd years ago. I wonder what their products are like now in comparison. Regarding leaders, I don't think you can go past Yozuri H.D. Carbon. As you know there's stiff & soft fluorocarbon. Theirs is a soft type (so nicer bait presentation) but seems to have the same abrasion resistance as stiffer fluoro. It has awesome knot strength (especially with an Alberto knot), doesn't get damaged and wrinkly if a quickly tied, not enough lubed, knot slips a bit. Also it's light pink in colour (which is best colour for invisibility at most depths & fluoro is already the same refractive index as water. So a ligth pink fluoro is as ideal as you can get). I have tried so many different Fluorocarbon leaders & it really is my fave. So if you haven't tried it, which I imagine you have, do give it a go. Cheers & Kia ora from NZ (the Angler's Eldorado, according to Zane Grey)...

    • @Tight--LiNeZ
      @Tight--LiNeZ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Saltstrong Wow. But surely with a weigh on it like that, stretch comes into it. The mono can stretch whereas the fluoro doesn't as much, meaning each stroke of the sandpaper has more of a scratching affect on the fluoro in a shorter area of space on the line, or something. Wonder how visible the mono is underwater? I must admit, my spool of Ande leader from 25 years ago, is still mega strong & never breaks, it's just so thick for it's breaking strain though. Maybe newer Ande stuff is thinner?

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tight--LiNeZ If stretch did impact this test, the same impact will happen in real life too given that the line are tight when fighting a fish... if anything, the tension will be much more making the mono even stronger relative to fluoro. As for wondering how visible mono is underwater, I'll refer you to another experiment in which I was testing the sink rates of mono vs. fluoro lines in water. A surprise finding was how similar the lines looked underwater (essentially showing that the "invisible" claims of fluoro are simply not true). th-cam.com/video/d9GM78rkqnU/w-d-xo.html

    Unfortunately 5 years old, should have them all the same diameter. Hanging a weight is relevant, the diameter more relevant.

    In your "mono vs fluoro" vid th-cam.com/video/KiQTvmM-1cY/w-d-xo.htmlm26s it looks like that same Ande 20lb monofilament broke after 40 passes, but in this video it broke after 23 passes. Is there a difference between the test you ran in the original video and in this one besides the line/surface being wet?
    Even if so, that's still an enormous drop-off in strength when wet!

    Not a relevant test. Same diameter line is more important to test oneley so you can find out how abrasion resistant the line is. Then you get true results. Test those lines in same diameter 0,30 ore 0,35 all 4. Oneley in this case you get " real " results. BS is not important in abrasion resistance diameter is!!

    • @Saltstrong
      @Saltstrong  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The assumption for this test is that anglers mostly choose their line based on the strength they need to handle the pulling power of their target fish. If you equate the diameter of a braid to the diameter of a mono line, it would then be comparing a 100 lb braid to a 20 lb mono. Do you think many people would be considering picking between a 100 lb braid and a 20 lb mono for handling any given species?

    • @evgenveberic7023
      @evgenveberic7023 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep but you were not talking about compare braid with mono. In your Video you compared 4 diffetent monos. And the theme was abrasion resistance and not pulling power. And a nother argument Look at the i think berkley nanofil line massive BS in extrem thin diameters but almost no abrasion resistance. So wud you compare abrasion of a nanofil in 0,10 with a mono in 0,30 ore a braid in 0,16 if they have all 3 5 pound BS.I can tell you the looser right now withouth any tests and who will winn im also 75% shure. So if you want a fair abrasion resistance test you must look on the diameter not the bs. Bs dont say nothing about abrasion resistance. And also if you have a 0,55 mono ore fluorocarbon they beat the 0,55 braid in abrasion resistance and the braid can be 6 times stronger as they are. And also a 0,35 mono with 7 pounds is much more abrasionresistant as a 0,16 braid with 7 pounds. So if you targeting fish under critical conditions i wud prefer mono ore fluorocarbon over braid ( pulling power means nothing when the fish finds 1 stone 1 sharp edge and braid is history with other 2 lines you have more chances to get the fish with equal ore a litle lower pulling power of the lines because they are thicker. If you have clear areas then pulling power is important but Else not. )

      @@evgenveberic7023 My apologies... we have a braid vs. mono video that typically gets this line diameter question, and I assumed you were commenting on that one... my mistake! I agree that it would be smart to do the mono vs. mono test while equalizing the line diameters for the reasons that you mentioned. The reason it was focused on breaking strength was simply to keep it consistent with the braid vs. mono one that gets the most traffic.

    This is relevant to dragging slow through sand, but far more often line is compromised by getting nicked on rocks and structure which this does a poor job of modeling. Line pulled laterally over a sharp surface under tension would simulate a fish dragging line across a rock or piling and be far more useful an indicator of line quality (due to being the scenario encountered far more frequently). I can't remember ever abrading a line to breaking, but I constantly trim line that has been nicked.
