      These is thread in all the spendaholic episodes. They are all very narcissistic and completely deluded . They feel entitled to spend someone elses money . There is no cure for NPD or any other cluster B personality disorder but I don’t see Benjamin Fry addressing this in any of the epiisodes

      @krbrandt82 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @anabela B there is pretty limited evidence for treatment of personality disorders into complete remission. The nature of NPD is that people don’t think they have a problem. BPD can be helped by DBT and sometimes medications. They call him a “psychological coach” because he’s not a treating psychologist who is formally diagnosing. I’m not saying these people don’t possibly have these highly dysfunctional personality disorders but I don’t think we are given enough evidence to make that conclusion. I’m a psychiatrist btw.

Some of the people on this show went on to be on a show “Spendaholics saved my life” a few years later and had no long term problem, didn’t get into debt again.
      I think OP has noticed that some Spendaholics have some narcissistic traits, and some people w BPD sometimes have impulse control issues... and jumped to a conclusion

      Yes there is nothing wrong with second hand, its a conditioned belief given to young people off celebrities and pop culture. That second hand makes you look poor instead of it being better for the environment. To them its an insult to their ego. The trouble is its all in the upbringing, if the child is allowed to get away with certain behaviours they will act that way in adulthood and it seems like she has been pampered as a child and just given things when she wants them.

    • @teresse2742

      Not all sales people at luxury shops are like that (some definitelly are though). I am very frugal and get most of my stuff in second hand stores (some of those are designer ofc, but still outdated in professional's eye I think) and on sales, yet when I bought my designer bag as a treat for achieving milestone I set for myself, everyone at the store was very nice to me and we even chatted about where I thrifted my designer coat haha. Where I think most of sales staff at these shops would start judging you is if you started to just rummage around their products and gave the impression that you are not a serious buyer. I bought 4 more designer items after that and every time it was a super pleasant experience so I'd say that as long as you are there to spend money, they will treat you nice and with respect most of the time. :-) However, completely different thing is that you may feel weird and like you don't fit in, but that is something that no sales person can change because it is your personal insecurity (been there too and it changed when I challenged myself to stop using makeup on my acne prone skin and learnt that 90% of the strangers won't even notice, let alone give you weird looks or comments).

      It’s not possible to buy style or a good taste with money...
      I remember this episode from years ago in TV, she’s just living in her fantasy bubble, thinking that pricier clothes always needs to look better. But when the clothes wears you and not you wear the clothes, this is how you end up - with a uniform of jeans and black tops, losing yourself in the grey masses anyway.
      The sad truth is, that she wants to stand out, but just looks like a plain Jane anyway. Getting some exciting thrifted, good quality clothes and personal style would help her to look different in a good way.

    • @TheSmokey1523
      @TheSmokey1523 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@zuzanaxyz8866 Yes she has so many clothing options and only chooses to wear the same average looking outfits as everyone else, that it would not have necessitated buying anything designer labeled anyway. That's why it's a waste. It's kind of showing a bit of lack of creativity really. It's like she just assumes because there is a designer label on it, the garment should automatically be "better" regardless of the actual merits of the object itself. There is a lack of analysis required for determining cost per wear and improvement of overall appearance. Also she literally had five pairs of the same shoe to do different things in but to the world it would look like she only had that one shoe so it kind of defeats the purpose of her wanting to appear special and unique.

    • @TheSmokey1523

I was only saying that her wardrobe which is very expensive was not that distinguishably better than everyone else's given the amount of money that was spent on it. @Victoria oh hun, I don't buy crap. But even expensive things like furniture, electronics, even cars will break down eventually and become worthless. So I either buy cheap things often or expensive things less often. Not having things because they might break is stupid. Don't have kids or pets then, they might die. Don't have friends, they might leave, don't have a partner, they will leave you. ...

      I have no idea why you suddenly try to change what Dina said to "don't spend money you don't have on things you don't need". That is something completely different. Did you just realized that you are wrong? Oh honey, that's not a problem. When you grow up you'll be able to read and comprehend comments. Until then stay away from the keyboard and go play with your dolls.

    It's interesting how she has a strop when it's pointed out the T shirts are pretty much the same - just a bit shallow if you ask me - fur coat, no knickers. Too many people are like that - fed by the media, Joey Essex wannabes! Stop world I want to get off.

      That's the therapist's theory in every episode, that there's something deeply emotional causing the spending habits. The real cause here, at least as I see it, is the fact that her father died, which means one less person to answer to, in terms of spending habits. As for her mother, I've seen people behave like her, thinking of the money she borrowed, not as a loan, but as an antecipated inheritance.

If you were a millionaire you should spend some money, not outrageous amounts and not on luxury items, but decent clothes, decent food etc. If you make a million a year, spending ~5000 extra a year makes literally no difference, but not eating crap like ramen is way better for your health, and thrift shopping should be left for the poor who, you know, actually need those cheap things and don't want rich people who could afford to shop elsewhere taking all the best items
