My laptop has Ubuntu installed on the 2nd half of the hard disc drive (HDD), and Windows XP on the 1st half, so when booting up I select from the boot manager options which HDD partition (Ubuntu or XP) to boot into. I configured my laptop over 4 years ago, but since then virtualisation has really come of age => now I would install Ubuntu, then use Virtual Box to install XP "inside" Ubuntu. This allows you to toggle between the 2 without rebooting :-) Google anything not understood.
