Jaguar seems to have slightly better colors. And the part where you ride the first boss plays more like a shooter than the psx version did, where Rayman did the attacking with his fist. did. No rain effect on the stage where you plant platforms to climb up. PSX version though, has superior music and sound effects.
I still have my Jaguar we got from Babbages. In Retrospect the Jaguar was simply ahead of its time, obviously. Developers had a hard time figuring it out, so majority of the games released don't tap into half the power of the console. It was simply ahead of its time. By the end of its life cycle they started to figure it out (Check out Aliens vs Predator & Doom & Rayman). The industry just wasn't ready for the technology. Had Nintendo 64 dropped in 1993 it more than likely would have suffered the same fate.

I love the Jaguar's use of up close up layers of parallax scrolling the PS1 is missing it, also if you look closely the Jaguar had much more detail in the environments like the mount of random butterflies flying around and I also like the sharper more pixel crisp presentation over the PS1 softer anti-aliasing. Keep the FMV portions I'll take better game play presentation.
At 5:14 and 7:41 you can see the PS1 achieving transparent mist effects and additional background parallax scrolling respectively which are nice touches. I agree though that the Jaguar has a sharper image, and the colours look a bit warmer on Atari's console.
If most developers hadn't relied on the 68000 CPU, the Jaguar could have been a 2D powerhouse. I saw screenshots of this when it was new, and it was jaw-dropping to me. It was a true quantum leap in 2D graphics that obviously wasn't even remotely possible on 16 bit systems. The rest of Jaguar's 2D games, not so much.
Rayman was originally a Jaguar exclusive title made FOR Jaguar and ported to everything else a year later after the Jaguar sales were not good enough. If you see some enhancements in the PS1version it's not surprising they had roughly 2 years to add content and make it look better. Please remember people if the Atari Jaguar didn't exist there would have NEVER been any other versions of this game because it was designed for the Jaguar's hardware in mind. This is also why Rayman has no limbs. It was easier for them to do the animations because all of Raymans parts are on a single sprite strip and are separate objects drawn by the Jaguars RISC. Don't hate on the Jaguar it is the whole reason Ubisoft now has this franchise. NEVER FORGET THAT

The game would not have come out for the SNES, but definitely would still come out for PS1 and Saturn. Though I feel the content would be much more different than it is now.
Jaguar's intended mascot shows what could have been on the system. I'm glad it got ported to Saturn and PS1, but I just wished Jag could have kept this standard up. I hated the 32 bit intro though.

Yes the PS1 intro is better. Its actually full motion and kinda funny. Jaguar intro is good, but nothing special. It's the comparison that kills it really. Thank god this game didn't go obscure it very well could have....maybe. And then we'd live in a world without Rayman games, that sounds awful.
Eu tive esse jogo original no Saturn, com aquela caixa enorme de acrílico, ficava babando com os gráficos desse jogo. Inclusive a versão do Saturn tem alguns diferenciais interessantes em relação ao ps1, como a música do fim da fase ("yeahh") levemente diferente (com um "scratch de DJ"), e os efeitos de tela quando passa de fase, alguns em 3D. Esse jogo era exclusivo do Jaguar, mas em 1995 foram lançadas as versões de PS1 e Saturn. E como essas duas últimas versões eram em CD, as músicas ficaram maravilhosas, novas vozes foram adicionadas, acrescentaram uma abertura ao estilo desenho e as fases foram melhor elaboradas. Quanto à versão do Saturn eu me lembro que os gráficos durante o jogo ficaram um pouco melhores e que ela possuía algumas animações exclusivas quando se terminava a fase.

On some levels you can see more content in the Jaguar levels with more paralex scrolling and so on, and on many others it is the PS1 who has more content. This proves that any difference is not due to Jaguar processing power, but a lack of storage space on the Jags cart compared to the PS1's CD ROM.
+10p6 are we looking at the same comparison? Colors are totally washed out on the Jag, there is totally more content in the PS version, audio is terrible on the Jag and parallax scrolling is much better on the PS1.... also transparent clouds on ps1, none on Jag. The PS1 version blows away the Jag in every single aspect.
The reason its better on Jaguar is becuase RAYMAN was created for the Jaguar. The playstation version is a port of the Jaguar lol. The Jaguar Rayman is the authentic and original version

And yes definitely better music and sound effects on PS1 as well. But I can guarantee if this was playing on the jaguar CD it was close that gap without a doubt.
It looks like the PS1 is a higher resolution, but it ruins it by going way overboard on the anti-aliasing, which makes the Jaguar version look sharper. The colours on the Jaguar look nicer imo too.
All versions of R1 are practically the same resolution. But they have different color palettes and such. The Jaguar version also had a limit of 2mb memory and 4mb cartridge space.

Is the PlayStation version missing music? In some stages like when he's riding on the fly, there isn't any music. I have the Sega Saturn version of the game, and it's hard to say from memory, but I don't remember any stages being silent like that. I also like the stage complete jingle in the Saturn version better.
Both games look gorgeous the Jaguar clearly has a powerful 2-D engine and the PS1 is no slouch in this department either Saturn is obviously best at 2-D with N64 being the worst at 2-D hence the Street Fighter games weren't ported to it.
MrManCube I think I the N64 has forced texture interpolation (fading colour between each pixel) that makes textures always look blurry in N64 games, and if you're drawing sprites with the GPU then you're going to have that blurring on them too.
@@CarloNassar mk trilogy and nba hangtime rocked on the n64. Both 2D though hangtime was a sprite scaler. Maybe a lower resolution but out performed ps1.
i love the game idid not know that the game is different in little things on the jaguar. i played the saturn version back in the day. it had some advantages over the playstation version. i would like to have the jaguar cart since it was the 1st version and it was designt for the jaguar. but its very hard to find these days.
For me getting the PS1 version on the classics section of PS3's online store was a no brainer because that way I get to play it on my Vita's beautiful OLED screen. It's like playing it on a portable CRT. The Vita has ridiculously good contrast and color. Another strong reason why having a PS3 is better than having a PS4. Many classic games available on PSN for PS3 do not even exist on the PSN for PS4. Rayman 2 Revolutions, Tokobot Plus, Digital Devil Saga, all 3 PS2 Fatal Frame games, Blood Omen, Soul Reaver and the list goes on and on and on. Given that a lot more people are using a PS4 vs. PS3, it is baffling to me why Sony doesn't include these games on the PS4's online store. Add the fact that PS4 doesn't support LAN play, and it's safe to feel that owning a PS3 (or 2) is FAR BETTER than having a PS4, and that's because of Sony's decisions, not the hardware!
Don't speak to soon... Atari jaguar have brighter colors than the PlayStation, and some hidden advantages. And because this is a cartridge game of course it's gonna loose to the PlayStation unless this game was run by CDs (Atari CD-ROM extension)

I'd say they both have their highs and lows. The intro dialogue and Betilla's advice are more fleshed out and grammatically correct on the Jaguar version, but the PS1 has a memorable FMV cutscene. As far as audio is concerned, PS1 is considered superior with CD-quality music and sound effects. Visuals, however, that's a mixed bag. Jaguar has some exclusive animations, like at the end of the Moskito ride, but PS1 has lots of foreground graphical effects like rain, snow, fog, and lightning. Bottom line is, it's all a matter of personal taste. :)
I had both the Jag and PS1 versions back in the day... IMO the PS1 version was a cut above, most likely due to it being on a CD vs the cartridge on the Jag. It had more environmental effects and obviously better sound and music since they are being played off of a CD. I still have my Jag cartridge but unfortunately my Jag died most likely due to the Mountain Dew I spilled on the power button in like 1994.
Something no one did mention is that the Atari Jaguar version, because it runs on a cartridge instead of a CD, that means it lacks loading times... and trust me, in a ridiculous unfair game you REALLY need no loading to make the experience more tolerable.

I had both of these versions (purchasing the PSX version much later and cheaper). Jaguar version had sharper graphics and smoother animation. PSX version graphics were fuzzy and animation was not as smooth. Both good versions but I'd give this game to the Jag.
The Jaguar impresses a lot here but I'd say the ps1 version wins, if only for the music and sound effects. Everything sounds so cheap on the jag, though it's cool to see where some of the music tracks origin from. Personally I'd pick the Saturn version though ;)
I don't get it.. Is this comparison using a badly ripped PS1 copy or something? The Redbook audio is clearly missing. Only the sound effects can be heard on the right (PS1) side. The Jag version is good, but the PS1 version is better in almost every way, as it should be, utilizing a CDROm and twice the video RAM. The music is one of the most charming aspects of Rayman and the Jaguar just doesn't come close to measuring up.. I even Did the math too! ;)
Overall the Rayman 1 on Jaguar seems more funny because cool music in Background while none on PS1 and nice effects. Of course nice colors too but those on PS1 are cool too. But less scenario of course.. So i wish to play it, definitely going to the Jaguar version for the fun :)
I heard somewhere that the Jaguar version was more or less designed for its Motorola 68000 chip. Also, it's easy to tell that the Jag version's audio is lacking. That makes me wonder, is it possible to port this game to the Sega Genesis? I know it means color loss and other details lost, but the GBA version had its colors downgraded, so it's not too much of a stretch.
When it comes to graphics, it's kinda hard to tell, but the Ps1 version does have more details and the colors are more distinct while the Jaguar version looks like it has some kind of green filter over it. Still looks good on both sides, but Ps1 has a slight advantage. For the music and sound effects, the Ps1 is just miles better, the quality and the variety of instruments is just on another level. Then there's the actual tie-breakers (even though it's not a tie :p), and that would be the gameplay and level design. Because having played both, I can say that the Jaguar version was basically a beta version, the controls aren't as responsive (the ledge-grabbing immediately comes to mind) and the level design is filled with little issues here and there, especially towards the end of the game : some awkward enemies placements, some unsynchronized platforms, a questionable puzzle level in the picture world (that got removed in the Ps1 version) among other things... TL;DR : Graphics-wise, it can go either way, but I think Ps1 is a bit more colorful and detailed. Everything besides graphics is just straight up better on the Ps1 version.
I know that this comment is a year old, but thank you! Everyone keeps saying how the Jaugar has better colors and making claims like it having hundreds of thousands more colors, or stuf like that. I've just never been able to see it and I personally think it looks like the Jaguar version has a filter over the graphics, like you said.

Saturn has more graphical features (In Mr.Dark's battle, beating him shatters the glass into 3D shards, and has a little cutscene with sprites after that)
I have had both and i remember the ps one version looking better and playing better as well as the sound is better offcourse. And one thing i remember is the music level where you can slide on the ps one you just walk on the jaguar version.
the reason for this is because alongside it's other processors, the Atari Jaguar included the Motorola 68000 which was the same cpu as the Sega Genesis. Because of this, a lot of developers got lazy and only used the 68000 chip instead of using the Atari Jaguar's more powerful hardware.
I love the ps1 version. It has much better sounds and music by far. I do like the Jaguar opening story slides, but overall feels a bit outdated. Both great versions though.

It was just confirmed by one of the Jaguar Zoop developers that the Jaguar versions potential was restrained in favor of the PlayStation version. And that's just Zoop. Hell, no one remembers Zoop. So the Rayman Jaguar rumors are almost undoubtedly true where Sonys deep pockets held back the Jaguar version for nearly a year until the PlayStation version was ready.

I’d say the Jaguars version looks a bit more crisp on the colour and Rayman or just his animation whilst he’s walking looks faster, but PSX wins only due to music and video which tells the story better. But the original slightly different Jaguar version is still great none the less! 😄

no it is not shit the ps1 has more things behind it then the n64 the reason why there even was a playstation is because of nintendo breaking a promise with sony the ps1 is able to load 180,000 polygons in a single stage compared to the n64's limitations the ps1 beats it by that stand point including with the sound quality a game being cartridge based vs disc based the disc wins by it being able to hold alot of space which says that the n64 is limited due by the tech nintendo was using at that time they would have been able to used a disc based formate but they decided not to and even the fact that nintendo was keeping a thing called micro coding away from the devolpers if you dont know what micro coding is it is custom coding made for a specific game they only released it to the game devolpers when the n64's life span was comming to a close the micro codding allows the creator of said game to do more with the systems tech but because of the limitations at the time nintendo drove away some people and those people went to sony to make there games
Atari with the Jaguar and SEGA with the Saturn made both the same mistake: not investing enough in 3D capable hardware. Nintendo, on the other hand, did the opposite with a machine almost incapable of 2D graphics, and also chose the wrong media. Stuff like.the 3DO or even the Pippin... I'm not considering that as both Panasonic and Apple weren't serious enough about videogames industry. Sony, with a mixed bag, but overall balanced hardware, that had a lot to thank Nintendo for its development, spent millions with developers and truly believed in what they were selling. This is the only truth.
I play the PS1 version on my PlayStation 2 because I assumed that the original Rayman goes on Play Station 2 but it turns out it works on PS2 so I assumed very carefully otherwise I would be playing on a boring old computer PlayStation

The Jaguar version has more vibrant colors than the PS1, and a sharper picture. On some levels you can see more content in the Jaguar levels with more paralex scrolling and so on, and on many others it is the PS1 who has more content. This proves that any difference is not due to Jaguar processing power, but a lack of storage space on the Jags cart compared to the PS1's CD ROM.

Colors are totally washed out on the Jag, there is totally more content in the PS version, audio is terrible on the Jag and parallax scrolling is much better on the PS1.... also transparent clouds on ps1, none on Jag. The PS1 version blows away the Jag in every single aspect.

Jaguar was good at 2D but was way behind the PS1 and 3DO and N64 for 3D so much so it died very quickly after launch.
The Jaguar Version is a magic trick. A 650mb game in a 4mb cartridge, and with better graphics :)

And yes definitely better music and sound effects on PS1 as well. But I can guarantee if this was playing on the jaguar CD it was close that gap without a doubt.

It looks like the PS1 is a higher resolution, but it ruins it by going way overboard on the anti-aliasing, which makes the Jaguar version look sharper. The colours on the Jaguar look nicer imo too.

All versions of R1 are practically the same resolution. But they have different color palettes and such. The Jaguar version also had a limit of 2mb memory and 4mb cartridge space.

Is the PlayStation version missing music? In some stages like when he's riding on the fly, there isn't any music. I have the Sega Saturn version of the game, and it's hard to say from memory, but I don't remember any stages being silent like that. I also like the stage complete jingle in the Saturn version better.
Both games look gorgeous the Jaguar clearly has a powerful 2-D engine and the PS1 is no slouch in this department either Saturn is obviously best at 2-D with N64 being the worst at 2-D hence the Street Fighter games weren't ported to it.

MrManCube I think I the N64 has forced texture interpolation (fading colour between each pixel) that makes textures always look blurry in N64 games, and if you're drawing sprites with the GPU then you're going to have that blurring on them too.

For me getting the PS1 version on the classics section of PS3's online store was a no brainer because that way I get to play it on my Vita's beautiful OLED screen. It's like playing it on a portable CRT. The Vita has ridiculously good contrast and color.
Another strong reason why having a PS3 is better than having a PS4. Many classic games available on PSN for PS3 do not even exist on the PSN for PS4.
Rayman 2 Revolutions, Tokobot Plus, Digital Devil Saga, all 3 PS2 Fatal Frame games, Blood Omen, Soul Reaver and the list goes on and on and on. Given that a lot more people are using a PS4 vs. PS3, it is baffling to me why Sony doesn't include these games on the PS4's online store. Add the fact that PS4 doesn't support LAN play, and it's safe to feel that owning a PS3 (or 2) is FAR BETTER than having a PS4, and that's because of Sony's decisions, not the hardware!

Don't speak to soon... Atari jaguar have brighter colors than the PlayStation, and some hidden advantages. And because this is a cartridge game of course it's gonna loose to the PlayStation unless this game was run by CDs (Atari CD-ROM extension)

I'd say they both have their highs and lows. The intro dialogue and Betilla's advice are more fleshed out and grammatically correct on the Jaguar version, but the PS1 has a memorable FMV cutscene. As far as audio is concerned, PS1 is considered superior with CD-quality music and sound effects. Visuals, however, that's a mixed bag. Jaguar has some exclusive animations, like at the end of the Moskito ride, but PS1 has lots of foreground graphical effects like rain, snow, fog, and lightning.
Bottom line is, it's all a matter of personal taste. :)
I had both the Jag and PS1 versions back in the day... IMO the PS1 version was a cut above, most likely due to it being on a CD vs the cartridge on the Jag. It had more environmental effects and obviously better sound and music since they are being played off of a CD. I still have my Jag cartridge but unfortunately my Jag died most likely due to the Mountain Dew I spilled on the power button in like 1994.

The Jaguar version also had clunkier controls and the helicopter ability on Mr Stone's Peak was also much less refined. They are both great, though!

Something no one did mention is that the Atari Jaguar version, because it runs on a cartridge instead of a CD, that means it lacks loading times... and trust me, in a ridiculous unfair game you REALLY need no loading to make the experience more tolerable.
Dont forget that PS1 hardware is newer than the Jaguar..... Very important in console/computer comparissons.....

I had both of these versions (purchasing the PSX version much later and cheaper). Jaguar version had sharper graphics and smoother animation. PSX version graphics were fuzzy and animation was not as smooth. Both good versions but I'd give this game to the Jag.

The Jaguar impresses a lot here but I'd say the ps1 version wins, if only for the music and sound effects. Everything sounds so cheap on the jag, though it's cool to see where some of the music tracks origin from.

The Redbook audio is clearly missing. Only the sound effects can be heard on the right (PS1) side.
The Jag version is good, but the PS1 version is better in almost every way, as it should be, utilizing a CDROm and twice the video RAM. The music is one of the most charming aspects of Rayman and the Jaguar just doesn't come close to measuring up.. I even Did the math too! ;)
Overall the Rayman 1 on Jaguar seems more funny because cool music in Background while none on PS1 and nice effects.
Of course nice colors too but those on PS1 are cool too.
But less scenario of course..
So i wish to play it, definitely going to the Jaguar version for the fun :)
I was 5 years playing it on a jaguar
I heard somewhere that the Jaguar version was more or less designed for its Motorola 68000 chip. Also, it's easy to tell that the Jag version's audio is lacking. That makes me wonder, is it possible to port this game to the Sega Genesis? I know it means color loss and other details lost, but the GBA version had its colors downgraded, so it's not too much of a stretch.

When it comes to graphics, it's kinda hard to tell, but the Ps1 version does have more details and the colors are more distinct while the Jaguar version looks like it has some kind of green filter over it. Still looks good on both sides, but Ps1 has a slight advantage.
For the music and sound effects, the Ps1 is just miles better, the quality and the variety of instruments is just on another level.
Then there's the actual tie-breakers (even though it's not a tie :p), and that would be the gameplay and level design. Because having played both, I can say that the Jaguar version was basically a beta version, the controls aren't as responsive (the ledge-grabbing immediately comes to mind) and the level design is filled with little issues here and there, especially towards the end of the game : some awkward enemies placements, some unsynchronized platforms, a questionable puzzle level in the picture world (that got removed in the Ps1 version) among other things...
TL;DR : Graphics-wise, it can go either way, but I think Ps1 is a bit more colorful and detailed. Everything besides graphics is just straight up better on the Ps1 version.
I know that this comment is a year old, but thank you! Everyone keeps saying how the Jaugar has better colors and making claims like it having hundreds of thousands more colors, or stuf like that. I've just never been able to see it and I personally think it looks like the Jaguar version has a filter over the graphics, like you said.

Atari's Jaguar 64-bit system, the only 64-bit system to play at 16-bit level, and most times even worse.
Well, the Intellivision, the Lynx and the Neo Geo are 16 bits and the Pc Engine is 8 bits... everything is relative ;-)
the reason for this is because alongside it's other processors, the Atari Jaguar included the Motorola 68000 which was the same cpu as the Sega Genesis. Because of this, a lot of developers got lazy and only used the 68000 chip instead of using the Atari Jaguar's more powerful hardware.

I love the ps1 version. It has much better sounds and music by far. I do like the Jaguar opening story slides, but overall feels a bit outdated. Both great versions though.

Versão jaguar superior: fase do mosquito melhor, tem um mini game acessivel via codigos e sem loading algum! Além disso o controle do jaguar é mais agradavel de se segurar. Rayman tmb n necessita de acessorios extras (memory card) no jaguar.

It was just confirmed by one of the Jaguar Zoop developers that the Jaguar versions potential was restrained in favor of the PlayStation version.
And that's just Zoop. Hell, no one remembers Zoop.
So the Rayman Jaguar rumors are almost undoubtedly true where Sonys deep pockets held back the Jaguar version for nearly a year until the PlayStation version was ready.
I thought the Jag version shouldn't even exist if it was only ready that late.

I’d say the Jaguars version looks a bit more crisp on the colour and Rayman or just his animation whilst he’s walking looks faster, but PSX wins only due to music and video which tells the story better. But the original slightly different Jaguar version is still great none the less! 😄
Big thing is, you could buy a psx for tons of great games. Jaguar has rayman as one of it's best 2 games the rest on it is absolute shit.

the reason why there even was a playstation is because of nintendo breaking a promise with sony
the ps1 is able to load 180,000 polygons in a single stage compared to the n64's limitations the ps1 beats it by that stand point including with the sound quality
a game being cartridge based vs disc based the disc wins by it being able to hold alot of space which says that the n64 is limited due by the tech nintendo was using at that time

they only released it to the game devolpers when the n64's life span was comming to a close
the micro codding allows the creator of said game to do more with the systems tech but because of the limitations at the time nintendo drove away some people and those people went to sony to make there games

Atari with the Jaguar and SEGA with the Saturn made both the same mistake: not investing enough in 3D capable hardware. Nintendo, on the other hand, did the opposite with a machine almost incapable of 2D graphics, and also chose the wrong media. Stuff like.the 3DO or even the Pippin... I'm not considering that as both Panasonic and Apple weren't serious enough about videogames industry.
Sony, with a mixed bag, but overall balanced hardware, that had a lot to thank Nintendo for its development, spent millions with developers and truly believed in what they were selling. This is the only truth.
