Great video. I bought two of these engines as scrap for £5 in the early 1990's and made one good one out of both. To be honest I wasn't too bothered about exact clearances. As long as the bearings are not tight or stupidly loose. They are very prone to getting cracked water jackets on the cylinder if allowed to freeze. I repaired the best cylinder with JB Weld and stippled it like cast iron so you could not see the repair. The reason I bought them was because I had a good fuel pump and injector. The engine works fine and has run like a Swiss watch since the 90's but itonly does the occasional summer show now.

Repco and warren and brown used to have torque specs for grade 5 and grade 8 bolts of every thread with there torque wrenches 40 years ago was very handy for orphan sizes and motors I would also load up that motor to almost stall for a good 6hours to bed it in properly and it will last forever . If not bedded in you just have a smoke machine and a oil hungry monster I know from experience. They are a great motor for pumps and generators as long as you keep some load on them . I think I have rebuilt hundreds of these along with air cooled listers , southern cross singles ect ect . Cheers from North Queensland
i have one its a 6 hp i found it in a old joinery workshop about 15 years ago it was as new never used it had no oil in the sump delivered that way i presume the exhaust valve was slightly stuck easy fix no dismantling required once primed it started right up no problem .
If its not the injector causing that smoke chances are the spill timing of the injector pump needs to be checked. A crook delivery valve will give uneven firing/running as well. If the unloading collar of the delivery has any scratches on it just replace it. They should never be polished or lapped.
Nice. You could have resized the big end of the rod smaller if you wanted to tighten that clearance up but I wouldn’t have worried about 0.004” myself either. Did you get it to settle down on the governor and steady out? I’ve got a 3/1 also and it hits smoothly and consistently at whatever speed I set it at. I notice you’ve got some unburned fuel smoke between hits, perhaps there’s still an injector issue or possibly a compression leak between the starting and run combustion chambers when in the cold start position?
I have found after running it for a 5 minutes it seemed to even out on governor and ran for 7 hrs with water tank Blue smoke unburnt fuel seems like low comp not sure yet

Would be nice to know if you can see any problems that i could fix before they cause any issues to the old girl. I am sure i have a diesel leak on one of the injector pumps, as before the first use i noticed the sump had fuel in it and the injector pumps looked wet so i now run it out of fuel after use, am i right they can leak when not running. I start the Lister at 18.20 in this video th-cam.com/video/wxUL0s6PFMM/w-d-xo.html I learnt a few things from your video which will help me when i come to overhaul mine
