  • I'm rebuilding the bathroom in my boat restoration project. This episode is about the components and systems used in building a bathroom on a boat. What's parts? Composting Toilet vs Electric Toilet? How will the boat shower drain?
Welcome to my boat building channel! This is my trawler restoration of an Albin 27 pocket trawler. Every couple of weeks I post a boat building or boat repair video to document various boat projects, sailboat restorations, or boat repairs. And when all else fails, I tell stories of boat motivation.

I got something out of this, namely, using a diaphragm pump for shower! The boat I'm currently renovating has a shower sump. This sump sits in the center of the bilge and because of the lack of space it pumps overboard on the opposite side of the boat from where the head is. The way the factory did this adds at least 20 feet of hoses. Plus they notched out a stinger to make room for these hoses. Your excellent idea of using a diaphragm pump eliminates a lot and lot of hoses and I can terminate a bilge hatch (which makes laying flooring a lot easier too!) And with your diaphragm pump solution, as an extra bonus in my case, all my water (gally, shower, toilet) is then on port side. No more hoses from one side to the other. and because of the oodles of feet of hoses I no longer need, I can invest in that expansive white sanitary hose.

Excellent ! Be sure to include an in-line strainer before the diaphragm pump. This will catch hair mostly and you probably won’t have to clean it but 2-3 times a year with constant liveaboard use 😁👍

Joe, so far you're doing everything the way I would. I put a composting head in my 28 Marinette and the downside for us was my wife's reluctance to use it.

Glad to hear it Joe. I think the composting head crowd fails to really understand the reality of the plumbing choices they’re advocating for. 👌It’s also odd they are so “enthusiastic” about trying to convert people. Seems like they take it personal. 😂😅

I have used on more than one boat the Raritan PH2 with the household size bowl. Create a holding tank at least 15 gal--you can build your own tank --plywood, glass, epoxy--deck pump out and overboard maserator pump--EASY, peasy-----Mikey

I've been using a natures head on my liveaboard boats for 10 years now...When I switched boats it came with me. I've had some negative experiences over the years like when a guest pee'd in the composting chamber or when it got infected with bugs. But overall, for me it's a much better option. Living aboard in Canada during the winter it's so much easier to empty the toilet once a month then to slug around a portable pumpout (honey bee) through the ice..spend a bunch of time pumping out a tank in the cold and then hauling it to a disposal area. I've never had a natures toilet fail on me but I've had a holding tank dump sewage into my bilge twice. I've had both...I'll never go back to a holding tank system. But that's a personal choice based on my needs and experiences. A composting toilet might not be for everyone..but saying that it's "pooping in a bucket" is disingenuous and you're wrong to steer people away from an option that might be better for them.

Thank you for making my points for me. 😂👍What’s disingenuous is to say a composting toilet 1) even composts 2) is anything other than popping in a bucket ðŸŠĢ 3) implying I’m wrong to provide a truthful account of a hot button topic consistently misrepresented by zealots. 😁We’ve all got your number Gary 🐙 be sure to like and subscribe 👍

I definitely hate hooking up my travel trailer, to a sewer hookup. I removed the toilet and replaced it with a composting tip so I only store grey water and regular water to run sinks.

Was conseriding a composting toilet on my sailboat. Not anymore. Thank you! I now have an extra $1200 to spend on electronics. Or an electric winch. Or underwater lights. Never met a sailor that didn't sing composting toilets praises, but then again they spent alot to change and no one wants to admit the expense wasn't worth it. I have an old school pump toilet. Works just fine, and if you maintain well there's it no smell. Easy to empty, either pumped or overboard. If it aint broke...

I mean yeah, if you just sit on anchor you could be limited by your holding tank... But how hard is it to get 3 miles off the beach, and just empty it when you aren't by the dock? But I think you're onto something, about the composting toilet.

Hi we replaced the head in our albin 27 fc with an Ogo composting toilet it fit perfectly in the old spot . We're doing the great loop it's been excellent 6 months straight yes it needs to be cleaned once and awhile but don't they all do a little white vinegar in the urine tank keeps it from smelling at all. Also opened up a lot of space storage in the engine room 👍.

Who dumps the pee bottle every day or so ? 😂😅😂😅ðŸĪĢ BTW the original Albin 27 had less than 17” of shoulder space in the throne and a 16-18” wide door. I’m too much man for that kind of space. 👍😁

Installed one on or last boat, Nor'sea 27. Smell was like damp earth, liquids get ripe after a few days. Had it vented to the on deck solar fan. No flies. Present boat has an electric head, 20 feet of stinking hose, holding tank, macerator, thru hull but head is flushed with fresh water.

People evaluating a composting head, who have obviously never used them is so ridiculous. They are cheaper long term. They smell way way less than sea heads. Near zero maintenance. As a long term user as a live aboard, I would never, ever use anything but a composting toilet.

Now you know that’s now true 🐙Dale, but I still appreciate your comment. ðŸŦĪWe all know there’s a reason composting heads are not typically outfitted inside new luxury model pocket or long term cruisers. To say a composting head has no smell is to be untruthful at face value. To ignore the practical requirements and limitations is to be deceptive. Dialing in the litter requirements takes effort and maintenance not to mention the daily trips to pour out the pee bottle! ðŸ˜ģoh you left that out Dale- shame on you. 👎
There is a smell. Where as a properly plumbed marine toilet and waste tank will give years of near house quality experience.
