Joe, please keep doing what you’re doing! Many of us have sailboats and motorboats. These come in a variety of materials and having a channel like your’s where you show how to work on these different materials is very helpful. If other people don’t want to mix woodworking with fibreglass then they don’t have to click on your videos. I personally am very interested in the Albin FC27. I am also a larger guy and find the modifications you are doing very interesting! The head modifications especially. Thanks for your videos!
Yet another confirmation that getting off Facebook about 5 years ago was a good thing! I've thoroughly enjoyed your channel and your passion. As others have said there's room for all here. Keep it up, sir!
I’ve been a big fan and supporter of the Sampson Boat Company channel since its beginning. I’m familiar with the “friends” FB group as well. I’m sorry to hear about the negative comments putting down your type of boat work. There’s no place for that type of rude behavior. I also support your right to manage your channel any way that you want, subject to TH-cam’s guidelines. If people find your content or the images objectionable they can stop watching and following. By the same token, those who have created the FB group in question have a right to manage that group as they see fit, and can set the standards for what content they find beneficial. If you want to be included, all you need to do is change your approach. Or not; it’s up to you. Keep up your good work.
Sounds totally reasonable. 🤔Except for the fact that they denied this very episode also to the FaceBook group. 🧐And it has a perfectly acceptable within the guidelines thumbnail and content. 😂 We’ll leave it at that.😎Thanks for the comment Mark and welcome to the Boat Werks. Haha exactly that. I have a cabin boat and worked a lot on it to repair the transom an make little benches with a lot of fibreglass. Everywhere i took al little bit of information like your channel. I put on a yamaha 115hp 2 stroke and it holds up really good. I have a steve baker Phantom 21 and a Mercury 275 supercharded for it. Inspiration, experience, trial and error. There are no “ lanes” keep putting out this content and people will follow. Thanks Joe keep swerving 🤘
I think it's a good idea to add some glass to that area, but I would have used 1708 instead of the 7oz cloth. It's a much stiffer fabric, and would build thickness much faster. I get about 1/8" with 3 layers of 1708 and epoxy. It looks like a pretty flat surface, so using 1708 wouldn't be a problem. It doesn't like tight curves too much.
Welldone. I am a keen Grp applicator as well. Living in South Africa. I have done several small boat projects. Ldv Canopies and lots more. Keep rolling them bubbles out mate.Greetings
Joe, what were your thoughts for selecting the mounting point of the turn buckle on the bulk head? --- Choosing a higher point would reduce forces in several places, also on the mounting point of the davits, though looking less elegant.
Great question. 👍It may not be apparent in the video but here is a limit to how high the turnbuckles can mount relative to the top edge of the aft cabin. There is an area within 2-3 inches of the top that is not flat on the interior. See the headliner videos. This effectively limits where turnbuckles can be mounted due to the sizing and placement of the interior backing plate. I feel the chosen position is the best of what’s available. Thanks for your great comment 😁👍
I saw your post on the group, but the group is ran by viewers and not Leo directly, and some experts on there don’t have a sense of humour, I ran into the same issues on that group when we first started off and I posted a video on there, and that didn’t even have a butt shot on the thumbnail 😂

Keep up the good work!! I think we have all been there from time to time where opinions get heated and folks are unsupportive. It’s unfortunate as I think you pass along a lot of great knowledge and you also give people the confidence to do their own projects. I know many of us would not be able to afford our boats if we didn’t do DIY repairs. Keep up the good work and I’m happy to watch MBW continue to grow!!

Joe you are the man. I admit I was a little shocked you used my girlfriend as clickbait for your last video but it was all in fun. Fun is the name of the game in DYI boat restoration. All types all construction all in. That’s the Motor City why. You are doing a great job. 👍
I enjoy your channel , I am working on a 9ft dyer dingy for my 38ft wilbur , and need davits also , I missed a set at the used store , I would love to see your take on refinishing wood
Welcome aboard Kevin! 😁👍be sure to check out my teak repair and teak refinishing videos. That's a great dinghy to restore and you're gonna love it with your big boat. Be sure to sub scribe and spread the word. Thanks again😎
Joe there’s plenty of us sailors who fancy the east life of a trawler . The high speed crowd may not get along but they can learn from the process. Re Davit did you consider attaching the rig screw support to the top of the deck ? It would have more support being higher and the angle of pull would not cause flex . Keep up the good work I’ll get re started on my project soon too. Cheers Warren Ps I’ve been supporting Leo from very beginning when he was poor!!!
It’s not really talked about in the video but there is an angle for the support strut from the cabin top to the davit. The top of the cabin top is too tall and does not accomplish the same support. Thanks Warren 👍😁
Don't listen to the eggheads! Keep doing your thing! Like you said, the tips, techniques and lessons you provide transcend all types of boating! "Ask me how I know"!😂
I've been watching that other channel since nearly day one. It's been interesting to see the progress. To me, it was way beyond restoring. Now, with all of the modern upgrades, it's no longer a 100 year vessel. (I'm an old mechanic that loves a classic that's original and, since I'm older than dirt, I remember the original). It has become a visual copy. Other things I don't like, but I would like to see it sail. I have a list of boat channels that I like much better. I'll watch yours. Grew up centered around Saginaw. Gone since '77.
I saw that going on over on the SBC page and was disappointed…..it’s their choice to exclude what amounts to an advert for another TH-cam channel-for whatever reason, or no reason - it’s “their” page. I don’t have an issue with that, but the rude insults were unnecessary and disrespectful . I can’t imagine Leo acting that way- his fan base should take a chill pill! I also saw your explanation post and thought it was well thought out. - probably just keyboard warriors who have never restored anything let alone been to sea - you do you and don’t sweat them - they are not worth the time. Would be fun to see Leo pop up at the Werks though 😂
No doubt 😁👍My hat goes off to Leo or any boat builder restorer who takes in a big challenge that few would embrace. He’s always been a gentlemen to me. 😎
You are real close to resolving the strength issue. As a non- boat guy...when in doubt add more fiberglass.... I hope Leo takes you up on your offer the next time he heads off to the UK. Would make a must watch video.
Thank you Kent! 😀👍 I tell myself I make these episodes for the ones who get it, not for those who don’t. But then I feel bad and decide to invite them anyway 😆 Everyone is welcome in the Boat Werks!
I suspect that the weak link in the design is the eye strap: both the strap itself ( it is far thinner than the turnbuckle. It may be worth considering using a more substantial U bolt ) and the attachment to the davits. All the force is concentrated onto one flange of the davit. If the fixing were rotated 90⁰ then it would be fixed horizontally across two flanges.
Interesting comments. 🐙🧐 The size and location of the mounting points is a limiting factor no doubt. But just like any retrofitted piece of equipment we have to work with that we have. Thanks for the comment
I like your your trawler very sharp very real. Have watched the other show but its another soap opera . Like Oak island . Will it ever get done will it float? . You may have circled the earth several times . they will still be pecking away on it.
Also I believe you will remove the flex from your Davits if you can mount them direct to the deck. The intermediate channels you made between the davit and the deck are more than likely flexing as well.
It’s definitely not clickbait as it delivers on all the promised topics. 😂It’s just a clever play of words and innuendo, no more than the usual suspects doing reality TV TH-cam boat restoration. Thanks for the comment James 👍😁
This is an interesting idea because it gives options for mounting other items 🤔😁 I will seriously consider this. Right Now i have a nice 5x5”stainless backplate, not too obtrusive for each side. The layers of fiberglass clothe made nice difference 😁👍
Sadly not everyone on that Facebook page is as nice a person as Leo. And, let's face it, if it's on the internet, you will always find some thin-skinned, super ego'ed prat who thinks he knows better than anyone else.
Hey brother, why didn't you just use some 1708 instead of thin cloth? 2 layers of 1708 will give you about 3/16" extra thickness, and a lot more strength than 8oz cloth.
I am late to this party but I will say it anyway if I may. First off the Davits flexing in themselves is not necessarily bad. It was difficult to see on the video if there was flex at the deck junction, of course the cabin top flex was clear. Anyhoo - on the reinforcement of the cabin top what you have done will certainly improve the strength but it will not improve the stiffness as much if you had incorporated two horizontal stringers (formed around closed cell foam. Too late now.😉👍
What? Swinging in boat building and there ain't no nudey ladies? Well that's just boring. Gees, I subscribe to Samson, and I'm going to subscribe to your channel too. Why? Well on the west coast, I have an old classic yacht to use for summer and right now I'm outfitting a 28' Cape Dory FlyBridge to use as a Florida boat. In 60 years on the water, the CD is the first poly boat I've owned, everything else has been wood, as I see advantages is both. So it's too bad the moderator of the Samson's Facebook page didn't like something. Who cares? We, your viewers are enjoying watching you do what you are doing and we're learning too.
Sampson peeps sound like the Porsche people if you drive a BMW to their club event. Hey Joe........Where ya going with that gun in your hand? Hey man you're a doer !.......Keep up the good work.
Thanks Vincent, it reminds me of the old sailboat vs. motorboaters back when I was sailing. I was guilty of it too 😔 And then I grew up and realized life is too short not to do as much as you like how you 👍 like. Thanks again for the support 😀
My thoughts: I do watch the Sampson Boat project... it is nice to see a lot of the tradation and work it takes to take what was a wreck and restore it. That said like yourself, I don't have a team as I ready to buy my first sail boat. I am very likely, almost assured to buy a fiberglass boat. As they say, "Haters gonna hate", flick the dust off your shoulders and ignore them.
There's a whole lot more people restoring fiberglass boats than wood boats. besides they didn't restore a boat at Sampson, they built an entirely new replica, of an old boat.
Ya probably shouldnt have posted an arse on a FB site. Its not the sorta thing thats politically correct these days.... Proud owner of an old GRP and Ply English Gentlemand motor sailor (Golden Hind 26)
Watch the channel and you will get the point. 😉No one is disputing Leo’s teams great work 🐙 You’ll come around Kev if you’re a real boat restoring enthusiast😁
There are doers and there are nay sayers small people who are judt hanger around ers . You my friend are a doer and a darn good one at that . I for one a 81 year old owner of countless boats big small sail power like and appreciate all your doing
Right on Motor City Boat Werks. As a retiered US Army SF/Intel pro had the opportunity of being an instructor at a elite NATO military school with a lot of staff from England. Some were honest and admitted that the people from that island are so petty it is an art form. Not all. Leo could not have been so productive if he were not here in the States using workers and ideas founded in our work ethic. Drive on Motor City, Drive on. I like Leo and that boat too. Great Video.
I've never really liked Leo. But couldn't quite put my finger on it. Free labor using volunteers. When he finally launched the boat, nobody was allowed to witness. Kind of an FU to all the donors
Taking on the big boat channel. I'll make popcorn and watch how this goes. Don't you have a policy of no bare wood visible in your shop? Funny. But let's see if Leo can convert you.
No one has to choose one or the other. You can do both! Well now that’s true Charles. 😉I like clean finished wood in the shop. But of course that doesn’t include my bins of raw teak and mahogany. Everyone likes a little artisanal wood shavings now and then. 😁 you got to mix it up
While I do think that Sampson boat co and followers have gotten a bit cultish... I think this was more about using someone else's brand in order to try and get followers for yourself. Basically.... a marketing tactic.
Nonsense. That group allows posts on anything boat related. People even post about 🎻 violins. It’s exactly as I said. See for yourself th-cam.com/video/KT87Zf9rHYQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=MhEIjl9ooSYvsTtf
If you post something that attacks Leo and his boat, don't be surprised when his many fans defend him. I am sure you won't be offended when I tell you I don't care what your opinion is. I know you won't care but I am banning and down voting your channel as well.
Poor Marvin: 👎Obviously you didn’t watch the video 🤡. I spoke highly of Leo and invited him to the Boat Werks. I spoke out against fanboys like you that give real boat enthusiasts a bad name. 😂 Sniff your wood chips elsewhere. And don’t worry we’re not all laughing at you as you walk away from the Boat Werks. 😂🤣😂 ok maybe a little.

Too late now.😉👍
Brilliant 🐙thanks for the comment. Be sure to like and subscribe
I like all boats............Aluminum is my favorite.......That's me, but any quality boat is my choice also.
😁👍 We think the same
Thx fore the video : ) In general when you meet a moderator under 30 year its just a matter of time before you gett in trouble. Ask me how i know? : )
😁🤓
Thanks for the comment George 😁👍
You keep doin you..😎
👍😁👍
Some of the guys that patronize that Facebook page real snobs for sure. If you don't make boat parts out of "Lignum Vitae" your nothing to them.
😂😅
Great attitude Joe. Keeping it real
😁👍
Sampson peeps sound like the Porsche people if you drive a BMW to their club event. Hey Joe........Where ya going with that gun in your hand? Hey man you're a doer !.......Keep up the good work.
Thanks Vincent, it reminds me of the old sailboat vs. motorboaters back when I was sailing. I was guilty of it too 😔 And then I grew up and realized life is too short not to do as much as you like how you 👍 like. Thanks again for the support 😀
Leo and crew aren't really restoring that old vessel. They are turning it into a true Ship of Theseus.
🤔
Kind of like the long lost George Washington's hatchet except it has a new handle and blade.
🤣
My thoughts: I do watch the Sampson Boat project... it is nice to see a lot of the tradation and work it takes to take what was a wreck and restore it. That said like yourself, I don't have a team as I ready to buy my first sail boat. I am very likely, almost assured to buy a fiberglass boat. As they say, "Haters gonna hate", flick the dust off your shoulders and ignore them.
Thanks for the comment John !
There's a whole lot more people restoring fiberglass boats than wood boats. besides they didn't restore a boat at Sampson, they built an entirely new replica, of an old boat.
Welcome Pete😁thank you for the comment
Ya probably shouldnt have posted an arse on a FB site. Its not the sorta thing thats politically correct these days.... Proud owner of an old GRP and Ply English Gentlemand motor sailor (Golden Hind 26)
Unfortunate but necessary 😉watch my other video and be sure to like and subscribe th-cam.com/video/KT87Zf9rHYQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7vIqiyrUjNFSDAJW

Watch the channel and you will get the point. 😉No one is disputing Leo’s teams great work 🐙 You’ll come around Kev if you’re a real boat restoring enthusiast😁

My wife got kicked off the Rosborough FB Group for telling the truth about our 2021 boat’s build. No bad truths permitted!

🫡We form our opinions from time spent in the field getting dirty
I've never really liked Leo. But couldn't quite put my finger on it. Free labor using volunteers. When he finally launched the boat, nobody was allowed to witness. Kind of an FU to all the donors
😎
I'm not a wooden boat hipster man!!
Excellent Welcome Aboard 😁👍
Taking on the big boat channel. I'll make popcorn and watch how this goes.
Don't you have a policy of no bare wood visible in your shop? Funny. But let's see if Leo can convert you.
No one has to choose one or the other. You can do both! Well now that’s true Charles. 😉I like clean finished wood in the shop. But of course that doesn’t include my bins of raw teak and mahogany. Everyone likes a little artisanal wood shavings now and then. 😁 you got to mix it up
🤣🤣🤣
😎
Also i think the Tally Ho is an ugly sail boat. It lacks luster if you will
🥸
While I do think that Sampson boat co and followers have gotten a bit cultish... I think this was more about using someone else's brand in order to try and get followers for yourself. Basically.... a marketing tactic.
Nonsense. That group allows posts on anything boat related. People even post about 🎻 violins. It’s exactly as I said. See for yourself

Are you jealous on his 500k followers…
I was very clear in the video exactly what I think. 🐙 Bjorn, did you watch the video? 😂🤣
Get real!
Willie: This is as real as it gets. 😉👍Watch the channel and you will see real boat building and boat restoration. Trust me
