    There was a big misconception in the natural hair community where we thought that the denman brush was best for detangling, when in actuality, the denman brush is marketed as a styling brush vs the Tangle Teezer and the Felicia Leatherwood brushes that are designed for detangling. That's why the denman was taking so much hair. It was meant to be used after you have already detangled.

      I must say this about that.. tangle teasers --my hair broke it, demon brush...I mean denman brush, my hair had a fight with the denman brush and we both were broken. Vent brushes snatch my stuff out at the scalp. I've had luck with wide tooth paddle brushes....but I like natural materials so now I use a bamboo paddle brush. Point is... Not everything works for everybody so if you see someone using something and you're thinking oh that didn't work for me but I'll try it again....no, stop right there and say I know it doesn't work for me so I'll try what does work for me. Oh and boar bristle brushes...come in soft and firm. I used to think I couldn't use a board bristle brush but come to find out I can't use a firm or hard for bristle brush the soft one goes through my hair like butter. The trick is run your thumb or fingers across the boar bristle brush before you leave the store with it if you can't push your fingers through it might be too hard for your hair unless you actually prefer the firm and don't want the soft and then you make your decision accordingly. I used to think brushes were the devil and then I learned is not brushes ...it's the type of brush.

    When I stopped washing my hair weekly, it did so much for my length retention. One of the things that helped when an itchy scalp was to do a very light spritz of vinegar diluted with water massage it into my scalp then follow up within a small amount of castor oil and massage it into my scalp as well. Castor oil is anti-fungal and vinegar helps to break up the old sebum on the scalp. It was the next best thing to actually washing my hair. Kept itchies away for about a week.

    • @cocoainkyoto
      @cocoainkyoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Thank you for this advice! Actually I’ve always wanted to try vinegar but always ended up stumped at the dilution ratio. How much do you recommend diluting the vinegar? And does it have to be ACV?? Cuz in Japan I can find all kinds of vinegar besides ACV lol 😅

    • @RoyaltyAC
      @RoyaltyAC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@cocoainkyoto I use about a tablespoon (15ml) per 8 oz of water or aloe vera juice. I added more if my scalp is super itchy. Max I would use would probably be 3 tablespoons.
      I actually don't use ACV (I think it smells like rotten apples lol!) I use white distilled vinegar which is also much cheaper. Also it's more acidic than ACV so I don't have to use as much. If I do use ACV it's a 1:1 ratio of half vinegar and half water.
      Also, on occasion, if my hair's really tangled, I've used the vinegar mix for detangling. Because it's an acidic mixture it helps to lay hair cuticles flat so strands can separate from each other more easily.

    Finding what works for our hair can be the most difficult part of the journey. I used to watch the Urban Bush Babies I cared for my hair differently from them but I just enjoyed their personalities. I also enjoyed watching GeraldineTheGreat. Currently the other 4C girls I enjoy watching are Indigenous Strandz (4B/C but thigh length}, Obaa Yaa Jones, and Nothando NdlovuRaw . I think all type 4 hair care may need some adjustment at different lengths. You may need to make some adjustment at tailbone if you chose to grow to that length.

    Finger detangling. The earlier in your journey you ditch combs and brushes and styling tools the better. I finger detangle.any time i have a lot of slip in my hair. Don't focus too much on getting your hair super duper detangled because why are you doing that. If you can style it easily it's good enough
    Also you can wash your hair once a month but wash you scalp once a week. Just twist or braid up your hair and rinse your scalp with water and massage it. Water still cleans your scalp and you don't have to deal with running your fingers through your hair. When you're done you can squeeze moisturizer into your twists and stretch them to dry.

    Baby Sis, you have schooled your elder Auntie! I have been natural since 2012. Came into the knowledge of our natural hair in my latter years, but I had to big chop again in 2021. Like you, I have very fine 4C tightly coily strands, and my scalp is always itchy. To combat itchiness and dryness, I wash my hair weekly, but I struggle with this because I know my hair is soo beautifully fragile! At 59 years old, I want to achieve bra strap length - at least, but I didn't understand how important detangling with less stress to our hair is, and touching our hair less a month will add to length retention! I'm nervous about washing my hair and detangling once a month, but I'm starting right now! Also, your tip on detangling only ONCE at one point during our wash day is invaluable! You are a genius! Thank you for sharing, Sis! P.S. Your hair is BEAUTIFUL..and so are you! Blessings!

    I’m not 4C, but I still have type 4 hair with fine (thin) strands that have always been prone to breakage. It took a lot for me to get to bra strap. However, I too plateaued at bra strap for some years, 3 to be exact. I kind of surpassed it once a year ago, but by the time I did some thorough trimming it was back to bra strap again and it has been every since. I think this video reminded me that I need to aggressively protect the ends more than I have been recently. I used to do an additional moisture and seal on my ends everyday and I haven’t been. I also used to pin my hair up alot more when it was not in braids. I’m going back to that and also try incorporating some type of baggy method on the ends before I pin them away or something. Anyways thanks for the tip/reminder about the ends.

      in my experience, no matter how much i pre-poo with an oil, hair still comes out as soon as i put conditioner/deep conditioner, it's as if shampooing my scalp encourages the shed hair to be out more than pre-pooing with an oil, it's frustrating for me so i'm always on the look out for what others are doing to minimise this issue

    Hi thanks for a good video. Since you wash once a month, and sometimes experience itchy scalp, try parting your hair and clean your scalp with a white wash cloth moistened with "witch hazel" or "Sea Breeze for sensitive scalp". Then, follow up with a light application of castor oil or the oil of your choice . Personally, I like Grapeseed, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Almond Oil and Jojoba Oil. You can also try cleaning your scalp with Tee Tree oil mixed with a carrier oil (if using Tee Tree oil, you must mix it with a carrier oil). Tee Tree oil is a little strong for me. So, I use pure witch hazel or Sea Breeze for sensitive skin and then follow with oil of choice on my scalp.

      @@diasporaexpress9799 Not true. Genetics influences hair growth. But, proper care and maintenance of hair leads to length retention. The two combined will lead to different rates of growth and amounts of hair retention based on the individual. But, hair growth is not solely dependant on genetics. There are 3 phases to hair growth, which is common in all humans: growth, rest and shed. Then, process starts again. There are scientific definitions of each phase. But for simplicity they are: grow, rest and shed.

    Damn Im trying to grow my hair out more and I feel like washing it less actually contributed to dryness and more breakage. Someone suggested installing mini twists and washing hair in the twists once a week so that’s what I’m trying now wish me luck. Im also strictly finger detangling when I take them down as I don’t think my hair can handle any combs or brushes except boar bristle brush for smoothing.

  • @traceydumase
    @traceydumase 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I feel like I've reached a plateau too. I'm almost at nipple length but it legit feels like I've been "almost at nipple length" for more than a year. Used to use mini braids for protective styling then stopped when I noticed my hairline falling back. But if I could find how to combat the hairline issue I could probably get back to my mini braids. Having my hair loose majority of the time forces me to have my hands in my head way too often. I need to get back to what worked😭

    • @cocoainkyoto
      @cocoainkyoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Hm, if mini braids were what worked for you, maybe you can do them but not on the hairline and maybe do a flat twist or cornrow on the sensitive areas instead? Since it’s the hairline, if you don’t like the look of the flat twist with the braids, maybe you can try wearing cute scarves tied around your edges to hide the flat twist and still rock the braids. Or on the other hand you can rock the flat twist and hide the braids under a beanie (my old go to protective style). There are lots of options 😄

    I think another thing us ladies may consider is whether the products you use work with your hair. I tried finger detangling for a while and it was quite horrid; but when I switched to more moisturizing products with some slip, detangling was a breeze (whether with fingers or with a tangle teezer). I personally prefer the turn out of my hair after using a tangle teezer. Also tangle teezers have a particular brush for thick and coily hair which may also affects things. Hair needs and lifestyle needs and/or restrictions play into all these.
    Thanks again for sharing your experience with trials and errors. It is quite helpful :)

    Thank you for this ! I have been stuck at bra-strap for YEARS . I dye my hair blonde so I can literally see my roots growing like crazy but yet no length retention 😭 . I have been doing everything so at this point I’m looking at my EZ detangler . My scalp is the same as yours but since I’ve been using TPH serum , master cleanse , and scalp conditioner I can go as long as I want comfortably with no scalp discomfort or even flakes. It’s magic 😭. Just use regular deep conditioner as the scalp conditioner is only for the scalp . Your hair is gorgeous!

      That's because your hair is breaking off at the ends, which is the oldest part of your hair. I don't know if you do this already, if not, try putting oil on your ends, actually starting at the mid shaft to your ends, maybe two or three times a week. Hope that helps

    Hmm. Firstly, you have beautiful hair, sis.
    As someone with type 4 hair to my waist, I found the part concerning where you advised to going a month without washing your hair despite an itchy scalp because you think it’s best for your hair. Weekly washing is the longest recommended for our hair type by most certified natural hair specialists, and you’d said it’s what made your scalp happiest when you did it. Long hair is great, but we have to at some point recognize that sacrificing our actual health and hygiene for aesthetics is something we really need to move away from in this community. Our scalps being healthy and clean produces the healthiest, thickest hair anyway. That irritation and “itchiness” you described comes from buildup, not of product per se, but of sebum and sweat. Your pores are clogged, and it’s a neglect of skincare to let it stay that way for the sake of preserving every single inch. I can attest that your hair won’t fall out from washing it more frequently, and even the length retention absolutely evens out from having a healthy scalp. We have to get away from this narrative and normalization of letting our hair and scalps be unclean and unhealthy for vanity. We have an obsession, and I think it hurts us as a community.

    I love your video. I can see why people get relaxers!!! When relaxing hair, to truly prevent breakage, Moisturize, Moisturize and less manipulation the same as natural hair! But continue moisturize is key to prevent hair from breaking with a relaxer!! Thank you for your tutorial!!!

    To relieve itching and dryness between ONE MONTH washes (1) I use an acne face was or shampoo with 3% salicylic acid. It will be sold as psoriasis or dermatitis shampoo (2) mix about 4 Oz of olive oil with about 6 drops of essential oils ( tea tree and rosemary). I put this on my scalp every 5 days.

    I work out with weights daily and I sweat a lot so I washed my hair once a week and I have so many knots at the ends. I will take all your advice (I have 16 months of growth)If someone could give me more advice on washing routines and good products for Hair 4b -4c, I would greatly appreciate it.I'm learning to speak English, I apologize for my grammar. No need to apologize at all; your English is great ☺️ hm, I personally think one’s best wash routine differs depending on hair type as well as hair length, so it’s difficult for me to try to recommend something without having those details. For now I’d say try out my wash routine and see if you like it🧐

    You are hilarious; and 💯% correct ➰➰➰But I tell you, I have the perfect shower brush. It is so flexible (even the plastic bristles), and molds to the shape of the head, and causes little to no breaking. It feels so good as a scalp massager. I mean amazing. I tried and tried and tried, to find the exact same brush, so that I could have another one in my possession, to no avail. I am still searching. I gave up on the Denman, a long time ago. I never understood how naturals could use it, because it does snap our hair.
