  • Horror | USA. One of the 'big', hyped up horror movies in recent years, It Follows, just like The Bababook (2014) before it, would be one of those movies that would bring back "real horror". Did it? Well, let's see...

Something I really liked about the atmosphere of this movie is how it isn't really set in one specific time period or place. They swim in a swimming pool like its summer but dress like its fall. One girl has some sort of Kindle E-reader but cell phones seemingly don't exist in this universe. And half the cars are modern cars and half are from the 1970s.

This movie is perfection to me...it is creepy and unique...and I got stucked with the music on my head for days, after the first watch...this movie It Will Follow me forever!

You have a really great channel, man. You know this already, but I wanted to say it anyway. You are interesting, your videos contain content from the movie that is applicable, and your recommendations are always solid, and you have a subtle humor that works well.
Great work and good luck on your channel

"Mortality is a major theme of the film; the existential dread in the
face of death's inevitability, and how people try (and fail) to postpone
death. There are three quotations in the film that stress this theme.
When Jay is in English class, her teacher is reading from T. S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," and Yara reads two passages on the imminence of death from Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Idiot." - Wikipedia

Absolutely one of my favorite horror/suspense/thrillers in the last few years. It touched on everything I love about those kinds of films. Like you said you can't say enough how Erie the atmosphere was and the simplistic cinematography worked beautifully together. The plot and characters all fit together wonderfully for a great film. I have such a soft spot for the 80s and I was totally getting an 80s vibe from the sound track and characters.

Great review you nailed it. Always found it hard to describe why I love this film so much. Modern horrors rarely do anything for me, but this is in a league of it's own. Great atmosphere, and love the Carpenter style street shots.

Absolutely loved this movie. I watched it with a friend. I went out the next day and bought my own copy. Its a movie that makes you think afterwards. (Where did it originally come from, when it follows you and you pass it on to someone else and knowing that you will never get rid of it if that people dies). Its a pretty clever movie. Definitely a must watch.

I had nightmares like this so the movie spooked the shit out of me in some parts. I mean I've seen hundreds of horror movies before and I haven't seen anything that has scared me for years before this one. I love the cinematography, it's simple and perfect. But the soundtrack is probably the best. It literally gives me the chills every time I listen to it. It's so good.

I assumed the people that "follow", are all previous victims.
I loved how they did so much with so little. It's creepy and uses that for the scares. Something a bit different for a horror movie, and it works, so you just know others are gonna rip it off and fail.

This movie is okay I guess,I mean it deals with the themes of Adulthood as Sex sets the transition from tee good to Adulthood and having to deal with responsibility.
The naked man/woman represents Adulthood coming to a person as they succumb to their life.

The tall guy coming through the door actually scared me a bit. I don't usually get scared by horror films but that bit was done well. It was like a jump scare but a slow burner. The only times I can really remember being scared by a film are the nude old lady scene from the shining and a couple of scenes from the 6th sense. Any good recommendations for scary films or scary scenes?

You should check out the movie "The Guest" from 2014 if you haven't already seen it. It's another 80s throwback movie. It stars Maika Monroe as well. More of a thriller than a horror film, but there are horror elements towards the end.

I saw it last night! I liked the movie, but the last 20 or so minutes kinda ruined it for me, all of the sudden it got super over-the-top and cheesy/silly, I liked how subtle the whole build-up was. Still, I enjoyed it :-)

  • @seangreenway7425
    @seangreenway7425 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I kinda preferred to think of it as representing teen pregnancy rather than an STD. With so many references to youth and ageing through dialogue and through what "It" is like with the old woman or young boy and even having it be Jays dad in the swimming scene, as well as that in the swimming scene the blood filling the pool could be representing period blood showing that she is "safe" from the pregnancy. Passing "it" on through sex could also be symbolizing passing on the responsibility of childcare to a new partner. Although I am probs reading too far into it, I like the movie a lot just for what it is.

    • @VileSelf
      @VileSelf 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I personally don't think there is a secret metaphor behind the movie. I think "It" is simply called "It" because they don't know what it is and that's what you call something when it has no real name or description. A mysterious force.

Sorry if I ever missed it, but have you done a review of "Prevues From Hell." It is on the horror section on Netflix and I watched it last night and really enjoyed it, and immediately thought of you. It is a 1987 cult film about zombies watching old, vintage exploitation trailers in a theater. If you haven't seen it I STRONGLY suggest it, and if you have, I would really love a review of it, taking back to the old school.

(SPOILERS AHEAD!!!) I found the film to be quite creepy because I have a bit of a fear of people walking at me in a slow manner (like SCP-106 in the SCP universe). And I really did like the look and feel of the film, with the cinematography and music. But some of the choices the characters made did take away some love I have for the film. Don't get me wrong, I do love the film but the pool scene? With the electronics? What were they honestly thinking would happen? It felt more like a time waste on their part and very dangerous because it could have easily caught her when the electronics inevitably didn't work. I actually kinda laughed when it started to throw them at her. They just should have thrown paint or something on it, at least they would be able to see it for a little bit until it changed again. But my favourite scene was when they were sitting on the beach and it was behind her but nobody could see it so they couldn't warn her. Creepy stuff!

the director's previous film (so ive read) covers young people exceptionally. For It Follows I appreciated how the characters related to each other and their dynamics played out as the crisis developed. We see them band together to fight something they don't understand--even at first if they didn't believe the threat. For the most part the teenagers are not picked off one by one as what became standard for horror movies with young people. Quite a few aspects of the film tampers with expectations. Helping to make the film worth watching (even repeat viewings). When Mika Monore's character is tied to the chair i felt the dread that the scene would go into torture and gore...that's part of ride the audience gets not knowing what will happen.
I disagree about your critique of jump scares i seem to think there was 2 times in her home that would fit that description. I think a scene with a ball thrown thru a window filled that mood and later she lets her friend into the room & suddenly from behind her the ghoul appears.
The film has quite a few subtle visual details that tell the story where most would do spoken exposition. Though it doesn't have an explosive ending as we have been taught thru Hollywood it signals a new era of storytelling.

I agree that the soundtrack was great and that the cinematography was interesting, but right from the opening scene there was just something very off about the movie for me. The girl in the start was acting extremely irrational. Also in several instances they broke the conventions - if "It" just follows you then "It" would never get on the roof. A movie with a similar electronic soundtrack and a great atmosphere is The Guest - I loved that movie!

I liked this movie, he's right the atmosphere was great. I don't want to call it creepy cause that sounds cliche, but it was unnerving. Great movie.

The premise was original, the soundtrack was stellar!! Cinematography beautiful but the actual film was just well.... Good, not the hype machine it was cracked up to be but good

i loved it follows. it felt like the most refreshing scary movie since the ring, even though it was not remotely as scary.

one guy did point out why the fuck is the creature or what not being so obvious with who it chooses like there is a thing called subtlety.

I really liked this movie, and looooooove the soundtrack. There is just one scene i don´t like at all. When they lock themselves in a sort of shed and that stupid kid appears and just scares them... I consider that to be a jumpscare and it really just ruined the vibe of the film of course only for the remainder of the scence.
But anyways i really like this movie.

I liked this movie & thought it was a great concept To me the story is somewhat like Contracted if you've ever seen that it's another killer STD movie but with It Follows the passing it on part makes the story more unique

Hi Mr HC, did you saw The Witch by Robert Eggers ? Quite amazing ! So dark and gloomy with some good subtile disturbing content, and very well filmed...
But I'm sure you saw it already ^^

I usually agree with your opinion on movies but with this one I just can't.... :\
With all its popularity online I expected it to be something else, something different...but it wasn't.
There were a lot of american-horror-movies cliches and I'm getting really tired of them, I found nothing special in this movie.
Also, one thing that pissed me off was that those "things" could easily kill Jay and all of those being followed during the night, while they were sleeping!
I know it's a small thing but it's just silly.....
