I've been reading a lot of comments on my previous three videos that people miss the spoilers, and that these videos are perhaps a little "lazy". I know they're very different from the "normal" videos, I just wanted to give my quick thoughts on these recent movies I've seen and enjoyed. Maybe you should see these more as "teaser reviews", because I'm just trying to get people excited to perhaps check em out. All the while also being honest where these movies might be a little flawed. Anyway, only three more guys haha, then I'll go back to my "regular" videos. CHEERS!
For some reason the movies you're recommending in your new format doesn't really encourage me to want to see them. Your old format was way better and I watched every film you recommended. That's me though. Anyone else feel the same?
The Void was a love letter to Fulci, Barker, Carpenter, Lovecraft, Gordon, Cronenberg and many other 80s icons' work; it may have missed the mark in a few respects, but is far more of a genuine horror movie than the current spate of tween-bait jumpscare tripe. Would like to see more from Astron 6, they have really shown they can deliver. The ending was a definite homage to the Fulci classic that isn't going to get named for spoiler reasons.
Bad syntax, sorry. He definitely inspired most of them. Metallica released a track "The Call Of Ktulu" in 1984; Lovecraft had a quite an influence over 80s culture.
One of the perks for people that support the show/channel on Patreon is that I send out "early access" links to upcoming videos! And since I made all these last few videos back-to-back, they've all been finished for a couple of days
I thought it was mostly good. It's strongly influenced by (if not a direct homage to) John Carpenter's films, specifically The Thing and Prince of Darkness. There's even a bit of Assault on Precinct 13 sprinkled in there. So if you liked the feel of those films, you'll probably like this one. It's got a wonderful brooding synth score and the practical effects are top notch. Of course, they ought to be since the two directors (Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski) work primarily as artists and in special effects. SPOILERS AHEAD, MAYBE: The biggest problem I had with it was the plot. The film felt a bit directionless. Towards the end, it seemed to want to be a bit like Silent Hill (the video games) and torment the characters with guilt over their past and take a more psychological horror bent, but it didn't do anything with it. It comes out of nowhere and really goes nowhere. Bear in mind, this comes after they've been slaying what are essentially monsters in a very straightforward way and the villain's goal for immortality has been revealed. It'd be like if in the final act of The Thing, MacReady starts hallucinating about his dead wife and thinks he's back at home, only to snap out of it five minutes later and say "Alright, we need to blow up the base." It doesn't flow. Sure, I know this has a more supernatural element than something like The Thing, and that's established early on, but it's also not established that the film is going to be about the characters struggling with trauma or grief nor does it end up being about that, so it just comes out of left-field. Maybe I just missed the point. It's possible. Overall, it felt like the film wanted to be an occult flick, a monster flick, a psychological horror, a body horror, and just squeezed everything they could fit in there like it was their carry-on luggage without worrying about whether it all meshed together. The characters were also lacking in depth. The actors do an alright job for a low budget film but there's not much to their characters. We get a bit of backstory later on, sure, but we spend virtually no time with them before the shit hits the fan so we don't see them evolve and they end up seeming bland or stock as a result. That was a problem with many of Carpenter's films so maybe it's another homage? I could go on and on but overall it's worth a watch. If you liked Prince of Darkness, you'll like this one. Just don't expect to be blown away.
I loved this movie. I had the chance to catch a screening at the local theater and I was just blown away by how fun and creepy the movie was plus the amount of great imagery in the film is just perfect. Plus when I bought the ticket I got a free triangle shaped Void pin.
I thought the visual effects were some of the best I've seen in years. The bad acting was distracting at times, but the atmosphere definitely made me forget about that. Interesting story mostly and the set design was really spooky. Glad you liked it!
0:51 Hahahaha Don't feel bad, man! At least you're giving the film more exposure, which is more than I can say. ----Oh, and I'm glad you mentioned Knives... I was pretty stoked when I realized it was her. "The Void" is definitely one of the best horror movies I've seen in awhile.
Very little cgi, no jump scares, cool atmosphare, awesome practical effects. It's one of the best horror movies to come out in recent years in my opinion.
It's great! The Director liked referring to it as House because he wanted it to sound like a big American blockbuster (he originally was told to make a film like Jaws). The Criterion release has a doc. on it.
~yes that film is uniquely quirky and lovable! movies can be like this sometimes if they want to be and this one does it very well . . . i think he's reviewed it as part of one of his videos on controversial or disgusting films or 30day horror challenge not sure which . . . you're just gonna have to watch them all until he get's to housu! lol . . .
I've wanted to see this movie since the teaser came out. What attracted me are the special effects,I'll try and get it through VOD.Thanks for the review.
I enjoyed it a lot. It was playing in my hometown, so I got to go see in theaters which was really nice. The atmosphere and special effects were great, but I felt like the movie could have been much better. Maybe it was the writing, or just needing a stronger plot/characters. Still a super fun movie, really loved seeing it.
Hey man, big fan of your reviews, so I decided to check this out on your recommendation. The review is spot on, there were definitely a lot of things to be liked about it, but at the same time it could've been better. I felt like the story was a little disjointed, there were kind of too many things going on at once to follow. But I agree, the story didn't seem quite as important as the other aspects. Also, I don't know if you're into video games at all, but the movie reminded me a lot of the game Silent Hill. The hospital setting, cults, birth of demonic creatures, it all seemed almost directly lifted from the game. Maybe it was a coincidence, but that's what I saw when watching it. Anyway, keep up the good reviews!
Pretty good, there were so many references in this movie Hellraiser, The beyond (!) and many more. This is what i wanted from the silent hill movie! I got it 10 years later :P
I really enjoyed this movie. I'm not a huge horror movie fan, but I do enjoy John Carpenter and Clive Barker. This movie definitely scratched that itch for me.
Finally watched one before you! :) Please do a full REview of this one buddy! IMO - The Void is fantastic. It took the "throw-back horror" vibe and made it pretty artful. Really would like to know what you think on a second viewing! Cheers from Portland OR, USA!
I put this movie on at random one night and totally did not expect what all happened! I did enjoy it though. like you mentioned it made me think of movies like the thing and hellraizer.
Didnt know this was out already. I love how many original horror movies being released nowadays. Getting tired of franchises and reboots and shitty ones. Also, recently I watched Macabre / Rumah Dara, an Indonesian horror movie directed by the guys who made the Safe Haven part of vhs2 and that masturbation section from the abcs of death. Pretty cool movie, definitely a better Indonesian horror movie, even Indonesian movies in general. Highly recommended
Glad to hear that. Unfortunately, Indonesian movies don't get enough exposure. There are some hidden gems, but the most famous one is probably The Raid. It's mostly the problem with the distribution of the movies and the language barrier that makes some of them hard to understand if the watcher is not familiar with Indonesian culture. A quick google search of "Best Indonesian Movies" provides a lot of movies that I highly recommend to watch.
I enjoyed it, reminded me of Hellraiser more than anything else, though I thought some of the performances here were weak but a lot of fun all the same
I didn't like the character, acting, and writing much, and even some of the directing left me sort of underwhelmed and confused. BUT I agree that it's a throwback horror that actually stands on its own. I give it ALOT of credit for that. Some of the suprnatural stuff felt really fresh and it took some really surprising turns in the beginning.
Hey man. It's just basic editing, all you really need is a editing software (I use Adobe Premiere) and a video file of the movie you want to edit. I talk a little more about the whole video-making-process in this (somewhat outdated) video: th-cam.com/video/dytaQFyJX9Y/w-d-xo.html
Lol! I love your commentary, it really is the best. It makes your reviews fucking hilarious, informative & entertaining. Great example of how a movie review should be done. Keep it up.
You talked a lot about the special effects and crazy shit happening. I saw that you said these are supposed to be like "teaser reviews" but I would've liked to see more of it in the video and maybe some explanation. But nonetheless I still like the video.
I can see why you said this film is a throwback to the 80's movies, like John Carpenter's The Thing. However, while I did enjoy the practical effects, I felt the story was flat. There was no explanation on the antagonist's motivation. The character just speak in riddles that make no sense. While the movie had to good elements, the story didn't and that why I believe where the movie fails in delivering a good horror movie
I was really disappointed by it. I felt like story just wasn't there. Too much stuff that should be explained had no explanation. And despite good practical effects and decent acting, everything still felt pretty cheap. Perhaps cinematography and color correction are to blame, I'm not sure.
I really liked this movie. I thought there were elements of influences of The Thing and Hellraiser thrown in and not wanting to spoil the ending but it reminded me of Fulci's The Beyond. Really enjoy your vids......keep them coming.
I didnt really like the Void, i think it would have been a lot better to just be a Cult type film without the extra shit... obviously just my opinion but i wouldve liked it 10x more it it was like Kill List
Yeah I did'nt really liked it. The special effects are great, but you don't make a film just with special effects. There's too many references. The film lacks of originality, ideas. It looks like it has been written on a weekend with too much beers and drugs.
I would of loved this film if it wasn't for it being so damn dark or soaked in bright red colors and the awful shaky cam the latest made by visual effects artists film that have no idea how to film the practical effects
I want you to talk about what happens, like seriously who the fuck cares about spoilers, somebody thinking about watching the movie doesn't look up movie reviews of it....
That's pretty typical of the genre they were going for... problem is the story never set up stakes or anything and things just kept happening for little rhyme or reason.
I've been reading a lot of comments on my previous three videos that people miss the spoilers, and that these videos are perhaps a little "lazy". Horrible Reviews
meh, people who bitch about new videos are ones that you would never be able to pacify anyway.
Horrible Reviews I watched Split. It got a 6 to 7 from 10 from me until the end. You were right; meh. Groetjes.
to be honest i love anything you put out, my only criticism is not enough!! keep it up my man
Personally, I don't really mind the new format, I'm just glad you're back making videos.
Loved it, reminded me the good old days of The Thing, Event horizon,Hellraiser, etc etc The sound and practical effects were awesome.
havocgr1976 yes event horizon exactly what i had in mind when watching it : )
The Void was a love letter to Fulci, Barker, Carpenter, Lovecraft, Gordon, Cronenberg and many other 80s icons' work; it may have missed the mark in a few respects, but is far more of a genuine horror movie than the current spate of tween-bait jumpscare tripe.

Steve Kostanski is really phenomenal. Have you seen PG yet? Different from The Void for sure, but delivers equally in terms of love-letter-throwbacks
“Some crazy shit happens. Then some more crazy shit happens.”
Best…review…ever.
shot in my home town at my old high school
I loved it. Quite a nice break from remakes, Slashers, and overblown cgi.
Danae Dunning How can your comment from 4 days ago? Are you a fucking time traveler
what in the actual ... is going on :D
What the fuck?

this is a remake

You've been killing it with your choice of movies to review lately! (:

Thumbs up for Knives.
I just showed everyone watching this movie with that that was knives from Scott pilgrim.
Yesterday i found a copy of this wired japanese horror movie called "Housu". Have you seen it? Its pretty amazing in my opinion.
It's great! The Director liked referring to it as House because he wanted it to sound like a big American blockbuster (he originally was told to make a film like Jaws). The Criterion release has a doc. on it.

I've wanted to see this movie since the teaser came out. What attracted me are the special effects,I'll try and get it through VOD.Thanks for the review.
I really loved this movie. it did come out of nowhere and was an awesome surprise. it had so many elements that I love from horror.
I'm really excited to see this! Been reading a lot of Lovecraft lately😊

Hahah * whispers* thepiratebayyy
Peanut Turner
use kodi, n00b
I think we all knew where it was going when he said he couldn't find it through legal, paid methods ;)
The Void definitely has a good throwback vibe. It was created by a couple of the Astron 6 guys, so it was inevitable.
I enjoyed it a lot. It was playing in my hometown, so I got to go see in theaters which was really nice. The atmosphere and special effects were great, but I felt like the movie could have been much better. Maybe it was the writing, or just needing a stronger plot/characters. Still a super fun movie, really loved seeing it.
i liked it if you got the Bluray theres a nice documentary on it and they talk about some of the stuff they had to cut out which is saddening

Yet another glorious outing.
This video was just ok in terms of quality. I like the more in depth ones. Keep on keeping on though!

Starry Eyes on Netflix is a fun lil horror flick you should check out. Im a long time fan of yours! Keep up the great work!
Dude that glass is tiny lol. Is that to make the beer last longer :) Great review by the way.
Haven't seen the movie no but I most definitely want to check it out after your review 😁

New upload yeah boi
Hey this is very off topic, but I just watched The Cell the other day, I forgot what a strange movie that is curious about your thoughts on it.
How do you put clips of the movies in your videos. I am trying to do that.
The thing is my favorite movie. Will check out void
0:38 Why am I laughing so hard 😂
Lol! I love your commentary, it really is the best. It makes your reviews fucking hilarious, informative & entertaining. Great example of how a movie review should be done. Keep it up.
0:51 - haha I hear ya.
Since you mentioned Lovecraft, have you ever seen Dagon?
review rings!!
awesome movie, was tons of fun
Horrrible reviews can you do upstream color I want to knows your opinion on it

Enter the Void slayed my puss.
Joshua Melusky Same dude
he has already reviewed that

thanks for review
Man, you are on fire))
It does look like something John Carpenter would do back in the 80s
New video already?! 😍
pretty cool indeed
someones gotta lil crushy on Ellen Wong awww How sweet!
Jesus, you have a really big hand
whats up with those pillows?
😁 "All that good 80's shit" 😁
The only thing that stood out to me was the voice of the doctor. It reminded me of frank from hellraiser.
I was really disappointed by it. I felt like story just wasn't there. Too much stuff that should be explained had no explanation. And despite good practical effects and decent acting, everything still felt pretty cheap. Perhaps cinematography and color correction are to blame, I'm not sure.
It pretty good but very gory and does get confuse certain times as the movie progress.
Movie was great!
I really liked this movie. I thought there were elements of influences of The Thing and Hellraiser thrown in and not wanting to spoil the ending but it reminded me of Fulci's The Beyond. Really enjoy your vids......keep them coming.
I really liked John Carpenter's "the Thing", likewise, this movie is alright.
nice vid
I wish you would add some spoilers.
enjoyed this one... & yeah the asian girl was cute
Never heard of this, I kind of collect the Lovecraft-a-likes. Hell yeah!
I neeed your shirt
I didnt really like the Void, i think it would have been a lot better to just be a Cult type film without the extra shit... obviously just my opinion but i wouldve liked it 10x more it it was like Kill List

Duh Foid
Sadly for me, this film didn't live up to my expectations.
man i dont want to See your liver :D
I liked up until the ending. Very anti-climactic.
That's pretty typical of the genre they were going for... problem is the story never set up stakes or anything and things just kept happening for little rhyme or reason.
actually, I found THE VOID pretty boring, so boring that I don't remember much of it anymore and I've seen it in theater approx. 4 months ago
Hey has the ad boycott hit you bad
You can admit it. The acting and the dialogue was horrible.
