This is the best you have ever done for all of us classic game show fans! That vault of yours is so full of rare gems! And more to come I hope very soon! Here's a ;) to you!
This was taped just after the original board's mechanism (it was the long-disused "Nighttime Concentration" board that had sat for 12 years in NBC's Fort Lee, New Jersey warehouse that went out to California ) had completely died. It was rebuilt with a faster and more reliable mechanism and one change came with it. The two "Bonus Number" cards replaced the two "Forfeit 1 Gift" cards; that marked the end of the Forfeits on every version of "Concentration" to come. They were considered pointless with the elimination of the gag prizes in this version. The daytime Concentration board was still in use when this version was about to start taping, because the NBC version with Bob Clayton was winding down in 30 Rockefeller Plaza. With the exception the trilon cards and a few parts shipped to Hollywood as spares for this version's board, it was scrapped after series ended. The prize board doors from the nighttime version had been shipped out to California and cut down as permanent prize boards on the Hollywood set. The desks are from the daytime Concentration set and were shipped to Hollywood immediately after the final show taped. They were refitted with the signal buttons and lights.
Fascinating stuff. I was hoping when Buzzr got G-T Concentration they'd air eps from the 1st season, so we could see (and hear) the old board mechanism at work. I'm curious if it was just as slow as the daytime one. But I'm still glad to see it again :)
That is substantially true, except there were not two boards at NBC. Just one. (Why would there be two?) The one that was used at the end of the NBC run in spring 1973 was shipped to California for the fall 1973 launch of the syndicated show.
Very early second season episode. The car model had changed to the updated 1974 Vega GT Hatchback, and the music was now played at the correct pitch (slowed down considerably for Season 1).
Interesting notes: #1 Jack Narz doesn't stand in between the contestants in this early episode. Wonder when that changed? #2. They should have left the Sony ECM-51 microphones in place, later versions used the gooseneck type. The ECM's esthetically look better for the time.
1. Not sure One other thing you might not have noticed was they installed buzzers on each contestant's podium. The podiums were from the old NBC version but not sure if they used the ones from the daytime or nighttime version. Also, didn't they use the board from the nighttime version because the other one was worn out?
The quality on this is AMAZING! I wonder what format this particular copy is from. I'm guessing that the studio masters are probably 2" quad. EDIT: Duh, given the head switching noise at the bottom, this is VHS. You are seeing what VHS is really capable of here.
Tell all your friends to get my TH-cam channel up for 1500 subscribers and then 2000 and so on and you'll see LOTS more of this classic show! - The Winker
+Wink Martindale doesn't NBC own the exclusive rights to this show? that's why CBS was never able to bring back an 1990s rendition of concentration because NBC wouldn't part with it so I heard.
Nice to see again. I would have liked to see an April Fools edition where Tom Kennedy (a.k.a. Jim Narz) hosted Concentration while Jack Narz hosted Name That Tune.
kenman923 i wonder, did the brothers themselves plan that stunt out, or was it a network thing? To have brothers hosting each other shows, a fun thing to do!
I hope Comcast-NBC/Universal brings back "Concentration," or allow FreeMantle Media to produce it for first-run syndication. The 30-piece puzzle board would work out again due to the better technology that is available now as opposed to what Alex Trebek worked with in the '80s "Classic Concentration." Also, the bonus round puzzles would be done differently: first trip for $10k; second trip for $25k & new car. And if time ran out and it's FreeMantle-produced....cue the "Losing Horns."
Unlike today, it would vary. Syndicated programming was "bicycled"---i.e., passed around. One market would see it days, weeks, or even months, before another market saw it.
@@christopherdunne7848 Depending on your city, syndicated game shows appeared on different stations, network or local were spread out on different days.

I could be wrong, but I don't think this version ever taped at Television City (The ticket plug at the end of this episode would probably have directed you there if they had been taping there)... I think they probably just ported a cart with the other Goodson cues over to this studio... :)
Mark Schildberg I'm still leaning with Wink on this one... Concentration doesn't show up on the manifest of shows taped at CBS on the Television City portion of their site. Perhaps an old ticket will turn up... :)

Yeah, because there were no actual prizes! Only cash.
Good news, this version of Concentration will be on Buzzr! It starts 3/30

And Bob Barker for daytime Price is Right and Truth or Consequences for prime time syndication

This was a daily show, meant to be a strip, actually. However, some stations only aired one episode a week!
Yup, some shows back then could be seen once, or up to five, times a week---hence the "see you next time"....
It was weekly in Cleveland during the 1973-74 season.

Nope
I'm glad Buzzr is running (the truly classic) Concentration, but why at 3 in the morning?
who knows? I just wish they aired other years like 1974
How did Mark Goodson acquire Concentration from Jack Barry?
Peter Moran He didn't. NBC brought the rights to the show after the quiz show scandal. Goodson-Todman just packaged this version and CC.
NBC licensed the rights to Concentration to Goodson-Todman for 20 years, from 1973-93.

This production number points to the Thursday episode of the 34th week of taping (34-4).
