I found one of these at a thrift store it cost me $9 cdn. I got rid of the useless NiCad battery and put in an 8.4 volt Makita lithium ion screw diver battery. The thing runs like a hot damn now, it is a little faster and goes longer between charges, These little Makita's are really well built and I'm sure the motor and the switch will handle the extra voltage no problem. This little drill is rapidly becoming one of my favorite tools.
I got a bunch of these. 4.8 and 7.2v. Gonna start converting them to lithium ion. Love these drills. Was introduced to them by an old electrician. Wish me luck.
@@sandbaggin26x40 still going strong. One battery is enough but I bought some charge control boards from eBay that I’m going to use to build an on board charge controller. Beautiful Japanese made tool. Built to last! I have one of the old 7.2v drills still going strong. Love them. Great restoration as always. Good to see you make use of the restored tools too like that hitachi.
I've got a model of this drill which is even earlier than this one. Its made in the USA for starters and the color of the plastic is red, from before Makita went with their signature blue. I inherited it and its missing it charger (no big deal, just use a different 7.2V charger) and the old NiCad's need to be replaced but apart from that its still in great shape!
I’m jealous of your soldering iron, mine doesn’t want to heat up enough, and my new one caused the main breaker in my house to pop! Great restoration though!
@@timehunter9467 normal sockets in the EU are protected by a 16A Circuit Breaker . If the circuit breaker trips instantly you create a power consumption over 80A wich is the power needed to directly trip the circuit breaker. Unless you have big power supplies or heavy electric motors connected that all get power at the same time it is not likely that the circuit breaker trips.
At least you have standard sized batteries in your drill. I had a very old Black & Decker (made in France in the late 1970's or 1980's I'm guessing) which had the weirdest batteries. The battery pack was sealed like a laptop's but it had NiCads instead. I had to destroy the plastic casing to get at the batteries. The plastic casing had quite thick walls and the batteries were glued into the casing with a copious amount of glue. Finally the batteries themselves were definitely non-standard measuring approx. 10cm or 2.5 inches long with 2 of them in the case. I decided to scrap the unit and re-purposed the chuck and motor. The chuck now resides on a drill guide (for drilling square to surfaces) which in turn is an older style which required you to unscrew the chuck from the drill and attach it to the guide! The motor is now part of a home made vibratory cleaner. :)
I rebuilt an old drill similar to that as well. Amazing what those little drills can do with fresh batteries. You did a nice job rebuilding that one. It will do the job for some years to come... Thumbs Up!

I was thinking the same thing before I read your comment. I used a Makita like that one in 1987 to do alarm installations. Back then rechargeable batteries were strictly NiCd. Interestingly NiCd batteries last a long time. I had 7.2 volt R/C car battery packs that would still take a charge after more than 20 years.
