    I am a 20 year LA City certified welder and a CWI and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the proper terms and procedures that you are teaching every one with your videos. I am always pushing the welders on my jobs to subscribe to your channel.     Jodi, I've watched countless YT welding videos and also done quite a bit on reading on the subject, but that's honestly the first time I've ever heard anyone actually describe Arc Force in not only a concise and technical way, but in a way that's easy to understand and MAKES SENSE!     Hey Jody! This comment isn't really related to this video. I figured maybe you'd be watching comments in a more recent video so I'm hoping you see this. I went to a job interview today advertised for a TIG/fabricator. I have TIG welded but not in the last 10 years. Twice that for MIG and then only structural aluminum with a spool gun.
    I sent my resume with a cover letter saying I haven't done TIG in a long time, but when I did I was pretty good at it. ( Braze welding also. They always seemed similar to me.)
    The reply said "If you can TIG a corner on 20Ga stainless, we'd love to talk to you.' 20ga? Stainless? @#$%^! I almost chickened out right there.
    I've been a deep sea diver for most of my adult life. 20 years in the Navy, 20 as a commercial diver. I was initially trained as a ship fitter (Hull Tech) which covered welding, always 7018, 6011 in real life on most things. But after dive school, I was a diver not a ship fitter and welding was as needed when something broke or needed to be made.
    On the commercial side my first job was welding a couple hundred 200lbs sacrificial anodes to a port seawall for cathodic protection. Used 6013 wrapped in electrical tape. Or 7014 if it was clean metal. Rutile flux is better down under. Has to do with the gas and quick puddle quench in the water. Traps hydrogen if you try much manipulation. I was pretty good at that too.
    My last dive job was doing the same thing with 1,325 of those anodes. 6-7 hours a day welding. Shallow (

      I wanted to be a commercial diver too, I’m 16, diving really interested me, I’m also a very good welder. I’m not sure if I still want to be a diver, I don’t know if it’s worth it or not.

    Finally, I've gone through almost every video on youtube on the subject of Arc Force and at the end of each video I was not only disappointed but also frustrated. Then I found your video and boom, everything I needed to know about this feature was here (how, what, why, when). I've bought an inverter machine and am teaching myself and this video gave me hope when I couldn't understand the Arc settings and almost gave up (haven't touched the stinger in 2 days), low on arc force won't let me strike an ark at all, hight on arc force and I burn through 2mm thick practice piece with 6013. Thankyou so very much for the video.

    Thank you for these videos..im starting my second year ironworker apprenticeship in sept. and its going to be welding. Ive spent some time in the booths and i can do some really decent flat welds. Ive started going vertical and im here to get as much knowledge as possible. These videos are a huge help for me to understand what im doing.. You used the term "scrub" i was telling someone i noticed when i feel a slight scrape it works great for me and the qaulity of my weld. 👍

    There are so many gifted coders, electronics engineers and developers out there, and you could envision a MIC under the helmet that responds to:
    "Set 110" / "Plus Five" / "Minus 10", "Slope down" ETC-etc. - And transmit it to the Welding equipment via Bluetooth or {whatever}. Voice recognition is everywhere nowadays.
    You can get an Alexa Echo Dot for $40.-. That device is by mega-dimensions more sophisticated than a blunt fingertip AMP control which they sell for way beyond USD100.- (Which is obscene ^^). Should be easy for people working in the right industry.

    I have found that 'even with stick' getting rid of the millscale makes so much difference in controlling undercut and the appearance of the weld.

    Hello Jody, Back when I was in Vocational school in 1976 we had uncoated electrode we practiced with. They called it "Coat hanger Rod", and it was a challenge to weld with.
    We had to practice with it for the first 2 weeks, after that we were allowed to use 6011 which seemed like a Cadillac compared to an Edsel. It would be interesting if you could get ahold of some of that electrode and see what you can do with it. IF they still even make it.

    I’d love to see you do a video on dual shielded flux cored 1/16th wire (I don’t think you have). That’s what I use at work. Would be nice to hear some tips on how to produce neat looking welds with that thick diameter wire. It does make a difference. Does feel much different than 0.35/0.45 IMO.

    Reminds me of my X-ray days in the late 70s using 8018 and 11018, 3/32 and 1/8 with a little 3/16 building submarines. Course we had an inter pass temp to work within. I then moved on to X-ray horizontal sub arc, much faster, and only about 100# a night because of inter pass temp. Primitive tools by today's standards

    So when doing a vertical uphilll weld restart , am i supposed to remove all the existing slag before resuming the weld, before striking the new rod. I don't think Jodie does, so it would be good to know..

    Thought I would pass this on for what it is worth. I have a MIG Miller 211 Auto-Set machine which has a dial showing 10-100 for the wire speeds. Most videos typically tell the IPM values, etc. I contacted Miller which responded with an estimate of 65 ipm for each "10" on the dial, so 20 = 130 roughly, etc.
    Perhaps if you wanted Lincoln may tell you what the Hot-Start numbers represent.

    OK so I’m in welding school and I’m doing uphill and if I go that slow it just drips and looks horrible and I’ve tried so Many different things to make it work and it seems like can’t get it to look good or pretty just drips and looks horrible I’m getting really frustrated

    The hot start is the same on miller big blue 400s. I just know im always stick welding and turn it all the way up. Usually i run full dig with 7018 when im in good positions. Im in an elevator shaft now welding behind in very tight uncomfortable positions, base materials galvanised on galvanised.. my length of is extremely variable so i found turning the dig to all the way "soft" gives me a lot of tolerance

    yeah a lot of codes on structural welding the rod has to be at a certain temperature also that's why they make Rod ovens

    Love watching your videos man, I learn a lot good tips... At work we do a lot structure welding, welding to soldier piles, that have cables that are being held by chairs that we set and are under pressure and so we use a lot of 4mm 7018 rods and depending what we do we lower or increase the amps. You see, I always do a root pass and than my capping when welding vertically, but some of my co-workers they crank up the amps to 165amps and they do one pass and it looks amazing, I struggle at 165 but at 150,155 amps I do much better, but my welds come out decent. I have my days but some days, up hill, sometimes I can't control my pool and end up having to stop cause half way through my rod im creating a big crater that's about to blow through. Could you please do some videos with 4mm rods up hill and show us some of your techniques.

    I was always told and told others that you had to chip off the slag on the previous bead before doing a restart. I noticed here that you didn’t clean the slag for your restarts. Was it not necessary to chip the welds all these years?

      Depends, in my experience you're fine if you get a quick restart. Atleast on horizontal, flat and vertical up. Vertical down I always chip

      the video stops and starts. I believe he chips nearly all of them but slag on 7018 is heavy and often leaves bare metal for about 10mm at the end of a vert up.

    Please do a test of different dig settings, especially vertical up and for different rods (6011 vs. 7018) I've got an old sycrowave I use for arc and never know where to set dig.

    Another banger here!! Love these videos! 100% self taught from this channel. One thing i did notice, on that second pass at the 2:30 mark you finished the first rod then went straight in to the second without knocking off the slag... is that okay on restarts or you did that just because you were practicing/the second rod will burn out the slag when you go over it?? Thanks again Jody!!!

      With vertical up the slag will drop due to gravity. When you get straigt in with the new rod when everything is still good and hot the little bit of slag in the endcrater of the previous rod will float to the top. The same goes for stacking beads horizontal. You can use the slag from the previous bead to support the rod on the next bead. That little bit of slag in the toe of the previous bead just burns out and flows to the top.
      When on a test it's better to be safe and clean the slag after every rod but if done right it shouldn't be a problem on vertical up and horizontal.

    I have trouble distinguishing between the metal puddle and the slag when I'm welding uphill. I'll see the slag puddling and dripping off and think it's the weld pool when it's not, and then vice versa. Any tips for how to recognize what I'm looking at?

      The molten metal will alway chase the puddle. That how I distinguish between the two. Try keeping your eys, on the leading edge of the puddle, and watch your arc length....

    So if your machine has anti stick and parameter to increase amperage when the machines senses it needs to while holding a very tight arc, wouldnt the two setting negate each other?
