- What began with a gifted 45 copy of The Unforgettable Fire at Christmas of '84, led me to the '87 release of The Joshua Tree - the album which would lead me to purchase my first Strat and attempt to make some sort of noise with it for many decades to come.
I have my son to thank for encouraging me to "play all the instruments" on this cover (rather than programming the drums & bass). It took 5 times longer, but somehow it just felt right to play this song, especially, without the aid of virtual instruments. I did, however, need to use a "shimmer" effect plug-in in order to try and mimic Edge's Infinite Guitar's "string" sound (using an expression pedal to cue it in certain places).
In the end, it was a blast to delve into this piece of art - this unique musical love story like none other I've heard. The nostalgia was so heavy, it brought me to tears on more than one occasion. I'm grateful to have been just 12 when it was released, to have enjoyed it for 30-plus years, and to give it a shot now, as I stare down the big 5-0. What a blessing music is to us mere mortals! I don't think I would have survived as many years as I have on this planet without it.
We are of similar vintage and I have listened to U2 throughout my life being introduced to the band through the Under a Blood Red Sky record in 1983. Since I first heard the Joshua Tree in 1987 I have listened to this track 100's of times in very varied renditions and can say with surety that you have replicated this amazing song brilliantly.
Often covers of this tune are lacking in soul but you seem to have captured the feeling and heartache as well as the instrumentation perfectly.
A pleasure to listen to it.
Thank you. This means a lot to me. I always sensed a deep heartache in this song, maybe more, a pain unspeakable.
This was a tough one to take on. There are so many inflections in Bono’s voice that carry the emotional journey of the song. I remember listening to this and so many other of their early songs as a kid, not understanding the lyrics, but connecting with the pain they spoke through the music.
Thanks for your encouragement. I hope to take on more U2 in the future, but they are daunting covers.
As a music lover, I have a lot of favorite songs and themes. But only a few of them still bring me that true feeling of happiness and unbounded joy. Like this one. Thanx for the art
❤ I love this song dont you know this song has been 7 weeks in usa number 1❤

Thank you so much. This means more than I can say, and yes, what a crazy world. Music the best thing I’ve found in this life. Wouldn’t still be breathing without it.
Hello dan
please if possible Can you play i still haven't found what i'm looking for . thanks
I will certainly add this one to my list! :) There are a few more U2 songs I would like to attempt in the coming year, and this is definitely one that's meant a lot to me over the decades.
Wonderful cover. Sounds amazing! Absolutely amazing work, Mr. Madison!! Super sweet.
Thank you, Corban!
Amazing,cheers from Argentina 🇦🇷
Thank you! 😊
Everything is on point with this cover. In addition to you doing all the instruments, I particularly like the light touch with backing harmony vocals in some parts of the song. Great cover, you should be proud!
I started listening to U2 in 1985 when I was 14. One of my top 3 concerts (can't rank them) is U2 in 1987 at Kemper Arena in Kansas City on the Joshua Tree tour. I burned my thumb on the lighter during the second encore which was 40. The other two in my top 3 were much more intimate concerts: Nine Inch Nails in the spring of 1990 at The Edge in Palo Alto (pretty small club) and Rodrigo y Gabriela at a small venue (300ish people?) in Santa Cruz.
Thank you so much, Brent. It was a blast (and fun challenge) to try. I love how these classic songs attach to so many of our memories, especially those of us who grew up in the 80s - a unique time in music (and much more) which I don’t think will be repeated. Hard for me to not get lost in the nostalgia sometimes.
You have a great talent my friend! Truly gifted!
Thank you!!
