    The transposition of Husserl’s phenomenology to classical music (watch "in Celibidache’s garden", "le jardin de Chelibidache") and the impact of Buddhism brought the master of his art to these completely beautiful wonders with the musicians. Unique and oh, so precious.

    24 year ago exactly I heard exactly this version of Sheherezade in a disc, for the first time. I have memorized this exact rhythm, no other way to do it. Hard to find exactly this soft rhythm. The other directors believe that this piece should be like a horse race or something like that instead of a more quiet, deeply emotional, yet powerful symphony. Thanks.

    The first movement is so amazing in this interpretation. The orchestra feels like a vast swelling ocean, building up and crashing, pizzicato and woodwinds like droplets of water breaking against the sides of a ship rising and falling among the crests of waves. It feels so restrained and controlled at times, but there is a sense of danger like there are massive forces that could erupt at any moment.

    Wonderful performance! Slower pacing than what one typically hears, but great beauty and presence. Maybe what we hear here has to do with this, as explained in Wikipedia:
    ~
    "Celibidache's focus was instead on creating, during each concert, the optimal conditions for what he called a "transcendent experience". Aspects of Zen Buddhism, such as ichi-go ichi-e, were strongly influential on him. He believed that transcendental experiences were extremely unlikely to ensue when listening to recorded music, so he eschewed them. As a result, some of his concerts did provide audiences with exceptional and sometimes life-altering experiences, including, for example, a 1984 concert in Carnegie Hall by the Orchestra of the Curtis Institute that New York Times critic John Rockwell touted as the best of his twenty-five years of concert-going.
    Celibidache was well known for his demands for extensive rehearsal time with orchestras. An oft-mentioned feature of many of his concerts, captured in the live recordings of them, is a slower tempo than what is considered the norm, while, in fast passages, his tempos often exceeded expectations. In Celibidache's own view, however, criticism of a recording's tempo is irrelevant, as it is not (and cannot be) a critique of the performance but rather of a transcription of it, without the ambience of the moment - for him, a key factor in any musical performance. As Celibidache explained, the acoustic space in which one hears a concert directly affects the likelihood of the emergence of his sought-after transcendent experience. The acoustic space within which one hears a recording of one of his performances, on the other hand, has no impact on the performance, as it is impossible for the acoustic features of that space to stimulate musicians to play slower or faster.
    That his recorded performances differ so widely from the majority of other recordings has led them to be seen by some as collectors' items rather than mainstream releases, 'one-offs' rather than reference recordings."

    • @alexaungurencei9163
      @alexaungurencei9163 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +RichardFeynmanRules There is no way in which one can have a transcendence experience from a recording. Music can happen only when you listen the live performance and only the instruments are generating the sound. No mics or any other equipment. What you find beautiful in this recording is only the sonorous impression.

    • @RichardFeynmanRules
      @RichardFeynmanRules 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Alex Aungurencei Excuse me, but who made you the judge and arbiter of what another human being can experience in the privacy of his own consciousness and heart? And how can you possibly know what *I* find beautiful in this recording? I haven't said, and you haven't a clue as to what I might find and feel in this recording. Such presumption! Yes, there is nothing like a live performance in terms of sound and feel, and I've been to many in my lifetime, but where a "transcendent experience" shows up, so to speak, is *utterly individual* and depends mainly on the heart of the individual being free enough of kleshas to be really present and open to what shows up. This is what you learn in Zen. I've had "transcendent experiences" listening to bluesman Robert Johnson late at night in the middle of the Sonoran desert on a lousy AM car radio. And "transcendent" experiences listening to Bruno Walter doing Beethoven's Sixth on an Eight Track player. The reality of that is something only I can know.

    • @alexaungurencei9163
      @alexaungurencei9163 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't get me wrong man. I am not criticizing you. I simply stated that sound can never transcend into music in a recording. What you have felt is entirely up to you, and I do not deem it wrong or inferior. Don't know why you got all fired up about. Besides, not all live performances are music either ;)

      @giulianobevisangue 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +RichardFeynmanRules "There is no way" and "Can only can". I'm so tired of these words when talking about anything really. If I want to have transcendence from his recordings, then come hell or high water, I will, Celibidache be damned.

    • @RichardFeynmanRules
      @RichardFeynmanRules 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Giuliano Bevisangue My friend, notice that I, Richard Feynman, am not and did not say that! That was Alex A...and I *strongly* disagreed with him and the idea he could say what another human being could or could not experience listening to a recording...also, I happen to be a practicing Buddhist, and I sure as heck know and have proved to myself that just about *anything* one is truly mindful of, bringing full attention to, can be the occasion for "transcendent" experiences, awakening, or whatever. It is amazing the "experts" one runs into on Facebook and TH-cam, who claim to know it all. :) :)

    Genialidad, extravagancia, sensibilidad? CELI es y será IRREPETIBLE , consigue su impronta en la partitura, los músicos y hasta en una mosca que pase por ahí. Gracias por compartir este regalo. Saludos desde Valencia

    Sergiu Celibidache was a one-off; a true genius and an incredible interpreter of music. However, in fairness to this great orchestra here, he had some fantastic musicians to work with in making this amazing production of Scheherazade. I speak here in particular of Hans Kalafusz whose golden fingers have produced the very best EVER Scheherazade violin solos.
    In fact, I'd pay anything if I could go watch Hans Kalafusz play those solos live!
    I suppose he doesn't play anymore, am I correct?

      Se dice que Celi acostumbraba a ensayar a lo menos una semana. Esta exigencia le significaba dificultades con algunas orquestas en boga que lo invitaban.
